Karnataka: Dalit woman thrashed as cow strays on upper caste land

    [ad_1]

A Dalit woman, whose cow had strayed inside an upper caste person’s land was assaulted, beaten with chappals, and hurled casteist abuses by the latter in Koppal district of Karnataka.

The incident occurred on February 3 in Rampur village. The accused tied the Dalit woman in front of his house and then began hitting her with his chappals.

Family members of the Dalit victim have alleged this is a common practice followed by the accused Amaresh Kumbar for many years.

Based on the Dalit victim’s complaint, Kanakagiri police registered a case against Kumbar under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Dalit atrocities are becoming progressively common in Karnataka. Last year, upper caste members in Heggotara village of Chamarajanagar taluk cleaned a water tank after a Dalit woman drank water from it to quench her thirst.

Dalit young men protested by drinking water from all water tanks in the village thus highlighting the issue of discrimination and untouchability that is heavily prevalent in rural areas.

Also, a message was painted on the tanks, making it clear that they are meant for public use and anyone can drink water from them.

Similarly, in December, a Dalit woman was seen being mercilessly kicked and dragged by a priest out of a temple after she dared to enter it. A video of the assault soon went viral. The incident took place in Bengaluru.

The video shows the woman being repeatedly slapped, and dragged by the hair outside. The accused can be seen beating her with sticks even as she runs for cover.

    [ad_1]

Dakshina Kannada: Karnataka Police on Tuesday lodged an FIR against the college management in Dakshina Kannada district in connection with the food poisoning case in which 231 students fell seriously sick after meals at the hostel mess.

District Education Officer Dr Jagadish had lodged a complaint with Kadri police station against the management of the City College of Nursing , alleging that suspicious, poisonous food is being given to girl hostel inmates.

It also mentions that the management has not maintained hygiene during preparation of food and while admitting the students to hospitals, the management had kept the district administration in the dark.

The District Education Officer, Principal, and district officers jointly inspected the kitchen of the hostel. The samples of food items, drinking water, stored meat and other articles have been sent to the lab. The direction had been given not to prepare any food in the kitchen.

Following the incident, the meeting of parents and college management had been organised where parents vented their ire on non-availability of hygienic food, and a few parents maintain that they don’t know in which hospital their kids are being treated. A holiday has been declared in the college till future directions.

Dakshina Kannada District Commissioner M.R. Ravikumar stated on Tuesday that 116 students are still being treated at the various hospitals, and their stools, and blood samples have been sent for testing.

The incident had taken place at around 9 p.m. on Monday. Sources say the students fell sick after eating ghee rice and chicken. While 115 students have returned to the hostel after the treatment, a special medical team, with an ambulance, had been sent to the hostel to monitor their condition.

  • Kumaraswamy claims RSS conspiring to make Pralhad Joshi Karnataka CM, targets lineage

Kumaraswamy claims RSS conspiring to make Pralhad Joshi Karnataka CM, targets lineage

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday claimed that RSS was conspiring to make Union Minister Pralhad Joshi the Chief Minister of Karnataka along with eight deputies, after the Assembly polls, and alleged that the latter lacks culture and divides society.

Hitting back, BJP State president Nalin Kumar Kateel said the JD(S) leader’s statement against the RSS is unbecoming of a former Chief Minister, and his claims about 8 or 9 Deputy Chief Ministers are borne out of a mindset that is rooted in dynastic politics.

“A conspiracy in the RSS is under way to make Pralhad Joshi the Chief Minister of the State after the Assembly polls. Joshi does not belong to a culture that is most prominent in southern Karnataka,” Kumaraswamy said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, “… Certain decisions have been taken by the RSS to make him the Chief Minister, so he has begun to attack us.”

Criticising the dynasty politics and alleged infighting in the first family of that JD (S) for a ticket, Joshi, while addressing special State executive meet of the BJP on Saturday, said ‘Pancharantna Yatra’ has been taken up, ‘Navagraha Yatre’ should have been undertaken instead. As 8-9 members of the party patriarch H D Deve Gowda’s immediate family are in politics. “…all dramabaazi, will they improve the State,” he asked.

Reacting to this, Kumaraswamy today said the public response to Pancharatna schemes of JD (S) has created a fear among the BJP, so they are speaking about his party and family.

The ‘Pancharatna Ratha Yatre’ is aimed at informing people about a five-fold programme called Pancharatna’ that the JD(S) plans to implement if it comes to power, and they include quality education, health, housing, farmer welfare and employment.

“He (Joshi) belongs to the category that divides the country, indulges in conspiracy politics, massacred those who contributed to the country in the name of patriotism,” he said. Therefore, he appealed to the Veerashaivas, Vokkaligas, Backward Classes and Dalit communities not to fall prey to the conspiracy of the BJP and RSS which would divide the State.

Claiming that he has received information on the plan to make Joshi the Chief Minister, Kumaraswamy said there would be eight Deputy Chief Ministers, and discussions have taken place in Delhi and the RSS headquarters in this regard.

“I want to tell Kannadigas of Karnataka, he (Joshi) is not of our culture…,” he added.

Joshi is currently Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines and represents Dharwad Lok Sabha segment.

“Kumaraswamy fears JD(S) won’t win even 20 seats in the Assembly polls, so he is affected. He might have spoken about 8-9 Deputy Chief Ministers after looking at his own family, because their politics is such. He has indulged in both dynasty and divide-and-rule politics,” Kateel said.

Kumaraswamy is a former Chief Minister and should respect all communities, making such comments about a particular community is unbecoming of him, he said.

Before commenting on the RSS, let Kumaraswamy must make himself aware of the organisation and its ideology, he said.

Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation a helicopter factory of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at Tumakuru in Karnataka on February 6.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and senior officials of the Ministry of Defence will also be present on the occasion.

The Greenfield Helicopter Factory, spread across 615 acres of land, is planned with a vision of becoming a one-stop solution for all helicopter requirements of the country.

It is India’s largest helicopter manufacturing facility and will initially produce Light Utility Helicopters (LUHs).

The LUH is an indigenously designed and developed 3-tonne class, single-engine multipurpose utility helicopter with unique features of high maneuverability.

Initially, this factory will produce around 30 helicopters per year and can be enhanced to 60 and then 90 per year in a phased manner.

The first LUH has been flight tested and is ready for unveiling.

The factory will be augmented to produce other helicopters such as Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs) and Indian Multirole Helicopters (IMRHs).

It will also be used for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul of LCH, LUH, Civil Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and IMRH in the future. Potential exports of civil LUH will also be catered to from this factory.

The HAL plans to produce more than 1,000 helicopters in the range of 3-15 tonnes, with a total business of over Rs 4 lakh crore over a period of 20 years.

Besides generating direct and indirect employment, the Tumakuru facility will boost the development of surrounding areas through its CSR activities with large-scale community-centric programmes on which the company will spend substantial amounts. All this will result in improvement in the people’s lives in the region.

The proximity of the factory, with the existing HAL facilities in Bengaluru, will boost the aerospace manufacturing ecosystem in the region and support skill and infrastructure development such as schools, colleges and residential areas.

Medical and health care would also reach the community residing in the various nearby Panchayats.

With the establishment of facilities like heli-runway, flight hangar, final assembly hangar, structure assembly hangar, air traffic control and various supporting service facilities, the factory is fully operational.

This factory is being equipped with state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 standard tools and techniques for its operations.

The foundation stone of the facility was laid by the Prime Minister in 2016.

This factory will enable India to meet its entire requirement of helicopters without imports and give a much needed fillip to the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in helicopter design, development, and manufacture, an official said.
