  • Change for a ‘new engine’: Kejriwal at first AAP poll rally in Karnataka

Change for a ‘new engine’: Kejriwal at first AAP poll rally in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Davangere: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday appealed to the people of poll-bound Karnataka to give his Aam Aadmi Party a chance to give a corruption-free government for five years.

He also promised to give free electricity, quality education in government schools and good healthcare for the state’s people.

Addressing his maiden election public meeting in Karnataka, the AAP supremo said the party has zero tolerance for corruption as a minister and an MLA in party-ruled Punjab were jailed.

“We are staunch honest. We will give a corruption-free government. We will give free electricity, build good government schools and provide quality education,” Kejriwal said.

Assembly elections are due in Karnataka by May.

The AAP chief alleged that corruption in the state doubled since the last assembly polls in 2018 and urged the people to vote in a ‘new engine’ government by throwing out the ‘double-engine’ regime of the BJP.

Taking a dig at the ruling BJP in Karnataka, Kejriwal alleged that there is a 40 per cent commission government running in the state.

“The people of Karnataka are good but the leaders are not. They defamed and destroyed the state before the world. There is a 40 per cent commission government here in which 40 per cent cut is taken in every public work,” Kejriwal alleged.

In this context, he mentioned the recovery of Rs 8.23 crore unaccounted cash from Channagiri BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa’s son Prashanth Kumar M V.

“Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah came to Karnataka and appealed to the people to give absolute majority in the upcoming assembly election so that a corruption-free government can be established in the state. Then, someone reminded him that already there is a BJP government in the state. I want to ask him why you could not eradicate corruption in the last four years,” the Delhi Chief Minister said.

He said the very next day after Shah flew back to Delhi, a BJP MLA’s son was caught with crores of unaccounted cash.

“That MLA and his son who hail from Davangere have not been arrested yet. Instead, Manish Sisodia was arrested,” Kejriwal said referring to Delhi Deputy CM Sisodia’s arrest by the CBI in the excise policy scam case.

He added that the raids at Sisodia’s house could not yield anything.

“They (BJP) alleged that Sisodia hushed up hundreds of crores of rupees. If that was true, then at least some crore of rupees should have been found but only Rs 10,000 was found,” Kejriwal claimed.

Taking a jibe at the BJP, the Delhi Chief Minister said the MLA in the dock may be given Padma Bhushan award next year. “All the criminals be it thieves, robbers, rowdies or rapists are absorbed in the BJP,” he further claimed.

After the BJP formed governments in Nagaland and Tripura and formed a coalition government in Meghalaya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech during the victory celebrations in Delhi asked people to stay away from ‘staunch honest people’, Kejriwal said.

“We did not fight the election in these three states but the Prime Minister mentioned us. He asked people to stay away from staunch honest people. He is afraid of us,” the Delhi Chief Minister said.

He ‘advised’ Modi not to be jealous of “AAP, the fastest growing party”. “Learn from us. You too become honest just like us,” the AAP supremo quipped.

Stating that AAP is a ‘staunch honest’ party, Kejriwal said raids never led to any recovery.

The Delhi Chief Minister said during the 2018 assembly elections in Karnataka, there was a ’20 per cent commission government’ in the state.

“The Prime Minister came to Karnataka and alleged that there is a 20 per cent commission government (during 2018 polls). He assured that he will eradicate corruption if the ‘double-engine government’ is formed in the state,” the AAP chief said.

He added that people trusted the Prime Minister’s words and formed the ‘double engine government’ (BJP government in the Centre and the state).

Corruption doubled in the state from 20 per cent to 40 per cent commission, the Delhi CM alleged.

Kejriwal said: “I will tour across the country and tell everyone not to form the double engine government. Corruption doubles in double-engine government. We need a new engine government.”

BJP MLA Virupakshappa has been booked while his son Prashanth, a government officer, was arrested by Lokayukta following raids in several places in the state.

The AAP chief added that the state contractors’ association president Kempanna wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the ministers in Karnataka are demanding 40 per cent commission.

Instead of addressing the octogenarian office-bearer’s grievance or taking action against the ministers and MLAs, the 82-year-old contractor was arrested in a defamation case, Kejriwal alleged.

The Delhi Chief Minister charged that 40 per cent commission is charged from contractors, private unaided schools and Maths (hermitage).

Kejriwal said in the last five years, Rs 20,000 crore was spent on repairing the pothole ridden Bengaluru roads but not even 20 potholes were filled.

Due to this indifferent government, over 100 people lost their lives due to potholes, he claimed.

Highlighting the corruption prevailing in the state, Kejriwal said bribes are taken to recruit police sub-inspectors and lecturers.

“Even the MLAs are on sale. The ruling party MLA has said that anyone who has Rs 2,500 crore can become the chief minister in Karnataka. Throw them out and give a chance to the staunch honest AAP,” the party chief said.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann too addressed the public meeting.

Hijab not allowed during exams: Karnataka Education Minister

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka Education Minister B.C. Nagesh on Friday asserted that students wearing hijab will not be allowed inside the examination centres.

The II PUC (class 12) examinations are set to begin from March 9 in the state.

Speaking to reporters he maintained that it has been clarified that all students should attend exams wearing uniforms. Hijab is not part of it. Those who want to write exams wearing hijab won’t be allowed into the examination hall, he added.

Minister Nagesh further claimed that there is an increase in the number of Muslim students who appeared for the examinations after the hijab ban. “After hijab ban, more number of Muslim sisters appeared for examinations and the enrolment of Muslim girl students has increased,” he added.

The hijab case, which is in the Supreme Court, is likely to be taken up after Holi vacation. Many students abstained from attending the examination as they were not allowed to wear hijab and write exams.

The Hijab crisis in Karnataka became international news as it turned into a law and order problem and communal issue. Hindu activists and minority groups came to a confrontational position. The crisis also had a deep impact on the psyche of the students and divided them on the basis of religion in campuses.

The Karnataka High Court has rejected the applications in this regard by students and upheld the government order on uniforms. It also said hijab is not an essential part of Islam.

  • Karnataka: Rs 6 cr recovered at BJP MLA’s home after son caught taking Rs 40L bribe

Karnataka: Rs 6 cr recovered at BJP MLA’s home after son caught taking Rs 40L bribe

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: After Karnataka, BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa’s son Prashanth Madal was caught taking a bribe of Rs 40 lakh on Thursday, an amount close to Rs 6 crore was recovered from the MLA’s residence on Friday.

Karnataka Special Lokayukta Court remanded the BJP MLA’s son, who was arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh, to 14 days of judicial custody here on Friday.

According to Lokayukta sources, Prashanth Madal has been sent to judicial custody as raids are pending. The officials will seek his custody after the completion of preliminary investigations.

Four other accused in the case have also been handed over to judicial custody. Authorities are also likely to take BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa into custody and question him, they said.

The sources confirmed that the Lokayukta authorities have found Rs 7.62 crore at Prashant and his aides’ residences.

The authorities had arrested five persons in this connection, including Prashanth. Siddesh, a relative of Prashanth, accountant Surendra, Nicolas and Gangadhar. Nicolas and Gangadhar had come to hand over the cash of Rs 40 lakh, Lokayukta sources said.

The MLA from Channagiri in the Davanagere district, is the chairman of the state-owned Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), which is known for its famous Mysore Sandal Soap.

The MLA has now stepped down from his position at KSDL.

Virupakshappa’s son Prashanth worked as the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Chief Accountant.

The raids have also been conducted on the residence and office of BJP MLA from Channagiri constituency Madal Virupakshappa at K.M.V. Mansion in Sanjaynagar locality of Bengaluru. The authorities have seized documents and other evidence from the residences. The raid is still on.

The development is seen as a serious setback to the ruling BJP. The incident has come to light at a time when the opposition is launching attacks of 40 percent commission and kickbacks in government tenders. Congress has stated that the raids proved their allegations of corruption and commission charges.

Prashanth had demanded Rs 80 lakh bribe for a tender process and was caught while accepting Rs 40 lakh at his office.

The complaint was filed regarding the allotment of tender for providing raw materials to the KSDL. Prashath’s father Madal Virupakshappa is the Chairman of KSDL.

The authorities are preparing to question BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa as the bribe money has been received on behalf of Chairman of KSDL for raw material procurement tender.

The Lokayukta has lodged a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and taken up the investigation.

Sources explained that Prashanth was an accused in a Rs 55 crore misappropriation case in Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KIRDL).

Prashanth and two others were suspended by the government and the case was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The case in this regard was lodged at Surathkal police station.

  • Karnataka polls: ‘Winning an Assembly seat bigger challenge for Siddaramaiah’

Karnataka polls: ‘Winning an Assembly seat bigger challenge for Siddaramaiah’

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Even as Opposition leader Siddaramaiah is vying for the Chief Minister’s post if the Congress comes to power in Karnataka after the upcoming Assembly elections, ensuring his own victory in the polls has become a challenge for him, sources said.

According to sources, Siddaramaiah, who hails from the Kuruba community, was finding it difficult to pick a ‘suitable’ assembly seat from where he could be confident of winning.

Siddaramaiah represented Varuna constituency in Mysuru district and chose Chamundeshwari constituency to accommodate his son. After his term as the Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah chose to contest from Chamundeshwari and Badami constituencies.

He took that decision following an intelligence report that he would suffer a humiliating defeat in Chamundeshwari constituency following backlash from the Vokkaliga community. The report turned out to be true and Siddaramaiah suffered a humiliating defeat in Chamundeshwari constituency. He managed to win narrowly in Badami constituency.

Siddaramaiah, however, has emerged as a mass leader and the champion of the backward classes in the state.

He enjoys the support of a good number of MLAs. Many have already started batting for him for the post of Chief Minister, all while embarrassing and challenging Karnataka unit Congress president D.K. Shivakumar.

Siddaramaiah is the only leader to launch poignant attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, RSS and Hindutva forces. His supporters proudly claim that, unlike others, “Siddaramaiah could not be targeted by the ED, CBI and other central government agencies”.

However, Siddaramaiah also has the image of being anti-Lingayat and anti-Vokkaliga in Karnataka, which, according to sources, is costing him dearly.

The Congress leader is reportedly forced to find a constituency where OBCs and minority voters are more in numbers when compared to those of the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities.

Karnataka BJP legislator and former minister K.S. Eshwarappa has said that “Siddaramaiah’s defeat will be ensured by his own party leaders in the upcoming assembly elections”.

“Has the high command asked Siddaramaiah to contest elections from the Kolar assembly segment? He (Siddaramaiah) has gone there fearing defeat,” Eshwarappa stated.

“You (Siddaramaiah) ensured the defeat of Dalit leader Dr. G. Parameshwar to rule him out from the CM’s race. The defeat of K.H. Muniyappa, was ensured through former speaker Ramesh Kumar,” he added.

“The Vokkaliga community and Dalits are waiting to defeat Siddaramaiah… since both these communities have dumped him, he is in full appeasement of Muslims,” Eshwarappa said.

Former CM B.S. Yediyurappa had in the assembly suggested to Siddaramaiah that he should contest from Badami constituency, where he won, to prove his credentials as a leader.

As assembly polls are nearing, the challenge of winning an assembly seat for Siddaramaiah is more challenging than ensuring numbers of MLAs to become Chief Minister if the Congress is voted to power, sources said.

Karnataka court quashes rape case lodged by daughter against father

    [ad_1]

Dakshina Kannada: In a rare case, a POCSO court in Karnataka’s Mangaluru on Thursday quashed the rape case filed against a man by his daughter on Thursday for the lack of evidence.

Two daughters of the accused had lodged separate cases against him with the Mangaluru Women’s Police station in June 2021, alleging that he had raped them when they were minors.

The younger daughter alleged that her father had raped her continuously for three years.

The Additional Sessions and Second Fast Track Pocso Court, which had taken up this case for inquiry, had stated that there is no evidence against the accused to prove charges against him.

Judge K.M. Radhakrishna has ordered the release of the accused, who was in jail for one and a half years.

Nadda kickstarts BJP’s ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatre’ in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Chamarajanagara: BJP national president J P Nadda on Wednesday kickstarted the first part of ‘Vijay Sankapla Yatre’ here reaching out to tribal communities, as he expressed confidence about the party coming back to power in Karnataka.

The yatre from four different directions across the poll-bound State, in specially designed vehicles or “Rathas”, will be launched by the party’s Central leaders in the next couple of days.

Nadda, who visited the Male Mahadeshwara Hills, kick-started the yatre, after offering prayers at the Male Mahadeshwara temple here.

He was accompanied by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, BJP veteran B S Yediyurappa, and party’s state president Nalin Kumar Kateel among other leaders.

Later addressing people from the Soliga tribal community, Nadda said, “With the Vijaya Sankalpa Yatre beginning from an auspicious place and with the grace of god, I’m confident about BJP getting the blessings of the people in the upcoming Assembly polls.”

He said, the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is marching ahead with strength and he has changed the political dimension of the country from “casteism, vote bank and dynasty politics”, to taking everyone together with a moto ‘sabka-saath-sabka-vikas-sabka-vishwas-sabka-prayas’ (Together, for everyone’s growth, with everyone’s trust).

Highlighting that the country is today the fifth largest economy overtaking the British, Nadda spoke about the nation’s progress in pharma, mobile and automobile, among other sectors.

The BJP government under Modi has worked for the development of all sections of the society especially the poor and downtrodden, he said, adding that today several prominent positions in the country are occupied by personalities from the SC/ST community, and President of India Droupadi Murmu belongs to the tribal community.

There has been a 190 per cent increase in the tribal budget under the BJP government at the Centre, the party president said, as he spoke about setting up Ekalavya Vidyalaya in tribal areas, and other schemes and programmes for the betterment of the tribal community, including opening of the Tribal Research Centres.

“I want to assure that under Modi, with Yediyurappa’s blessings and Bommai’s efforts we will bring changes in the lives and livelihood of the people here,” he said.

While Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to flag off second yatre on March 2 from Nandagad in Belagavi district, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is slated to launch the third and fourth yatres that will start from Basavakalyana in Bidar district and Avathy in Devanahalli near Bengaluru, on March 3, in the morning and afternoon, respectively.

According to party leaders, more than 50 state and national leaders will take part in this campaign, which will cover all 31 districts and 224 constituencies of the State, where elections are due by May.

The tours will cover 8,000 km, along which the party has planned over 80 rallies, 74 public meetings and about 150 road shows, they said, adding that it is expected to “touch” about four crore people.

The 20 days yatre will culminate with a mega rally in the district headquarters town of Davangere on March 25 which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The yatre that will begin from four different places will consist of 10-12 leaders in each of them.

Savarkar or Tipu? Karnataka district tensed over choosing name for junction

    [ad_1]

Yadgir: Tension gripped Yadgir city of the state after a row broke out over the naming of a junction after the 18th-century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan or BJP’s iconic figure Veer Savarkar.

Though the authorities swung into action and brought the situation under control, the issue has taken a communal turn threatening the peace, law and order situation.

Yadgir Municipality is run by BJP. Maintaining that Tippu circle near Hattikuni Cross is illegal, the Hindus are demanding rechristening it as Veer Savarkar.

On the other hand, fans of Tipu Sultan, mostly from the Muslim community, have declared that they won’t allow this to happen at any cost.

The authorities have arrested Parashurama Shegurkar, State President of Shivaji Sena, and his followers. North Karnataka Tipu Sultan Samyukta Rang President Abdul Kareem has also been booked by the police and sources say that he is absconding.

Tipu fans maintain that the city municipality has given permission to name the circle after Tipu Sultan in 2010.

Earlier, it was called Moulana Abdul Kalam circle. However, Hindu activists claim that the circle is named after Tipu Sultan illegally without permission from the Municipality. The government has not accepted the change of name.

The Hindu activists are demanding to rename of the circle after Veer Savarkar. They even made an attempt to remove the name of the circle and police had foiled the bid. The authorities had also clamped prohibitory orders.

Suresh Ambigara, President of the Municipality maintained that naming the circle after Tippu Sultan is illegal. The proposal has been sent to the government to name it after Veer Savarkar. “We will abide by the government order in this regard,” he said.

As elections are nearing, the ruling BJP government is likely to accept the proposal of naming the circle after Veer Savarkar. This is going to be an issue, sources explain.
