New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday tweeted a video clip of BJP chief J P Nadda’s remarks in Karnataka, and accused him of “threatening” the voters and calling his comments a “blatant attack on democracy”.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted a video clip of Nadda addressing an election gathering in Karnataka, to attack the BJP

“Karnataka mein vikas ki ganga behti rahe esliye main kamal ke nishan par vote maangne aaya hoon. Karnataka mein vikas chalta rahe, nirantar chalta rahe, ye chunav ka mudda hai. Jo Modi ji ka aashirvaad hai usse kahin Karnataka vanchit na ho jaye esliye mera aapse nivedan hai ki aapne kamal ko jitana hai aur Karnataka ke vikas ko aage badhana hai (Vote for the lotus symbol to ensure the river of development continues to flow in Karnataka. Development continues in a constant manner in the state is an issue in the elections. So that the state is not devoid of Modi ji’s blessings, I appeal to you to vote for the lotus symbol and take forward development),” Nadda is heard saying in the video clip.

Tagging the clip, Ramesh said in a tweet in Hindi, “There should be a limit to devotion too, Nadda ji. Why are you threatening and scaring the people of Karnataka?”

With the blessings of the people of Karnataka, a Congress government is going to be formed, Ramesh asserted.

The Congress from its official Twitter handle also tweeted a portion of the clip to hit out at the BJP.

“BJP President J P Nadda threatens to withhold constitutional rights from the people of Karnataka if they don’t vote for the corrupt 40% BJP government,” the Congress said in a tweet.

“This is a blatant attack on democracy and shows how the BJP plans to treat the Kannadigas,” the party alleged.

“We are not subjects of a Raja but citizens of a federal country governed by the constitution,” the Congress said.

The assembly polls will be held on May 10 and the results will be announced on May 13. The Congress is seeking to oust the BJP from power in the southern state.

BJYM activist killed in Karnataka; BJP calls it political murder

    [ad_1]

Dharwad: The murder of a BJP Yuva Morcha activist has taken a political in Karnataka turn with Union minister Pralhad Joshi dubbing it as a political murder.

Joshi’s remarks came after BJP Yuva Morcha activist and Koturu gram panchayat vice-president Praveen Kammara (36) succumbed to stab injuries on Tuesday night.

Bengaluru South MP and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) President Tejasvi Surya has also called it a political murder.

    MS Education Academy

The issue is likely to benefit the BJP to consolidate its vote bank in the backdrop of former CM Jagadish Shettar’s exit from the party, according to sources in the Hubballi-Dharwad region.

Joshi on Wednesday visited the SDM hospital in Dharwad to pay his condolences to Kammara’s family, and termed his killing as a political murder.

Kammara had reportedly intervened in a quarrel between two groups during the Udachamma religious festival in Koturu village, and pacified both sides. However, he was later fatally stabbed by a group of people.

“BJP’s grassroots level workers are being murdered. Earlier, BJP leader Yogesh Gowda was killed and now Kammara has been hacked to death,” Joshi said.

“We have asked the police to initiate suitable action in the matter. The state government must take stern action and deliver justice to the victim’s family. We are with his family. The exact reason for the murder is yet to be ascertained. But, we have got information that it was a political murder.

“Kammara was a good person who shared harmonious relationship with everyone. He belonged to the Lingayat-Panchamasali community. I am not alleging anything against anyone. We will compensate the family,” Joshi said.

Earlier, Tejasvi Surya said, “With deep anguish, we share the news of the murder of BJYM Dharwad unit executive member Praveen Kammara. He was brutally murdered by suspected political rivals late last night. BJYM demands immediate arrest of the killers.”

Dharwad SP Lokesh Jalsagar said that the police have detained four accused persons, including the prime suspect Raghavendra Pathath.

BJP sharpens attack on Congress in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: With the political temperature rising in Karnataka for the May 10 assembly polls, the BJP has sharpened its attack on the Congress with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stating that the opposition party has shown special love for Lingayat community after the elections were announced and pursued “divide and rule policy”.

BJP president JP Nadda, who was in Karnataka, also attacked the Congress and accused its leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of being “patron” of PFI.

“Former CM Siddaramaiah from Congress party withdrew cases against PFI, released 1,700 PFI activists from jail…Siddaramaiah is their patron…,” Nadda said in Hubballi. The Centre banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) in September last year.

    MS Education Academy

The Congress on Tuesday announced its candidate against Chief Minister Bommai from Shiggaon. The party has fielded Mohammed Yousuf Savanur from the seat. The party announced seven candidates on Tuesday and fielded former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar from Hubli-Dharwad-Central.

Jagadish Shettar’s resignation from BJP and his joining Congress on Monday has made Hubballi-Dharwad Central a key battle in the assembly polls. Shettar, a six-time MLA, represented the seat in the outgoing assembly and was keen to be given a ticket from the constituency.

He is the second senior leader from the Lingayat community to leave the ruling BJP and join Congress in less than a week. Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi had joined the Congress on Friday.

Basavaraj Bommai said voters from the Lingayat community “are vigilant and “have taken right decision when required”.

“Lingayat voters in Karnataka are vigilant and they have always taken the right decision when required. Congress Party has shown special love for them (Lingayat) after the Assembly elections were announced but it’s the same party which tried to divide the Lingayats and Veerashaivas. The people have not forgotten the divide-and-rule policy of the Congress party,” Bommai told reporters.

“All those leaders who joined Congress during the election would not make any impact on the BJP’s prospects. This time, the BJP will win more seats than in the 2018 Assembly polls,” he added.

Nadda, who also interacted with intellectuals in Dharwad, slammed the Congress saying that the party that “divided the country for seven decades is now itself divided”

“In the 70 years of Congress (rule) there was division, division, division and only division. Divide society as much as you can– north-south, language, caste, creed, religion. The fact is, by dividing and dividing, they themselves are divided now. BJP is unity in diversity,” Nadda said.

“In Tamil Nadu, 60 years back, they (Congress) were uprooted, till then they haven’t returned in the State. In kerala, they used to rule, but now they have shrunk from there too. In Karnataka, the fight is going on,” Nadda said.”You (Congress) were (in government) in Andhra Pradesh, in Telangana, you ruled both the States and now you have been wiped out from both the States,” he added.

He also spoke of the country’s development and foreign policy under the Modi government and referred to the de-hyphenation of India and Pakistan.

“Whenever any country spoke of India, it used to say ‘India-Pakistan’ together. Today, none of the countries mentions Pakistan, when it speaks of India. It’s because India moved ahead and Pakistan remained where it was,” he said.

BJP’s chief is on a two-day visit to the southern state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will embark on a visit to Karnataka from April 21. He will be in Davanagere on April 21 and in Devanahalli on April 22.

Shah is expected to attend Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organisational meetings in the run-up to the polls. Sources said Shah will meet the top BJP leaders in the state and hold a core group meeting.

Shah will also chair a meeting of the Election Campaign Committee and give his inputs to the team. He is also likely to chair a meeting of the Election Management Committee.

Meanwhile, former Congress MP B V Nayak has quit the party, after being denied a ticket to Devadurga constituency. Ticket has been given to his brother’s wife.

  • Won’t implement decision to scrap 4% Muslim quota till next week: Karnataka govt to SC

Won’t implement decision to scrap 4% Muslim quota till next week: Karnataka govt to SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Karnataka government on Tuesday assured the Supreme Court that for a week further, it would not implement its decision to scrap the 4 per cent Muslim quota in the OBC category in jobs and education.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Karnataka government, contended before a bench of Justices K M Joseph and B V Nagarathna that the state government would require more time to file its affidavit in the matter. Last week, the state government had sought time till Monday to file its response. After hearing Mehta’s submissions, the top court deferred the hearing till April 25.

The state government, on April 13, had assured that it will not go ahead with any admission to educational institutions or make appointments on jobs in terms of its March 27 order.

    MS Education Academy

The apex court had made some strong observations against the manner in which the state government scrapped the 4 per cent OBC quota for Muslims and placed them under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, saying the foundation of the decision-making process is “highly shaky and flawed”.

The top court had told the Solicitor General, representing the Karnataka government: “Prima facie, we are telling you, the first thing is that the order which you have passed… appears to suggest that foundation of decision making process is highly shaky and flawed… it is on an interim report, the state could have waited for a final report that is one aspect. What is the great urgency?”

Mehta submitted that the court should allow the state government to file its reply in the matter and the admissions will begin in May and nothing is going to happen if matter is heard next week either on Monday or Tuesday.

“Please allow me to file a reply, these are original proceedings. There was no empirical data as a religion….. they (Muslims) were included on the basis of religion. It is not something extraordinary. Can’t it wait till April 17?”

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Dushyant Dave, Prof Ravivarma Kumar and Gopal Sankaranarayanan appeared for petitioners L. Ghulam Rasool and others. Dave argued that staying the government order would mean Muslims continue to get the benefit of the reservation of four per cent and “if not, they will lose out in education and employment… Why should we lose out at all ? this notification is per se illegal and unconstitutional.”

Sibal said since the early 1990s, they were backward and now they put them in the general category and after 23 years, Muslims are in general category without a study. This is a direct violation of Article 14, and also the entire notification is violative of Article 14 and it is taking away reservation, he said.

“It is like I am poor, so I will be in the general category”, he added.

Dave reiterated there is no study to support scrapping of Muslim quota.

After hearing detailed arguments, the bench said the decision was prima facie based on fallacious assumption and was vitiated as it is based on an interim report of a commission. The petitioners moved the apex court challenging the Karnataka government decision to scrap the Muslim quota.
