BJP will lose in Karnataka: Kapil Sibal

    [ad_1]

Jabalpur: Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal on Saturday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will lose the next month’s Assembly elections in Karnataka.

He was responding to a reporter’s question here about the chances of the Congress, his former party, in the poll-bound southern state.

“If I say we are winning, then I will be called a Congressman,” he said in a lighter vein.

    MS Education Academy

The Grand Old Party will wrest the power from the BJP, he said.

On the formation of a new front of opposition parties, Sibal said, “There should be a common agenda. All parties should come together and I will personally try to work in this direction to set up such a coalition.”

The senior lawyer said to a question that at 75 he was not interested in contesting elections.

On whether he would ever join the Congress again, Sibal said, “I have left Congress, but not its ideology.”

  • Congress has to be fulcrum of coalition that takes on BJP in 2024: Kapil Sibal

Congress has to be fulcrum of coalition that takes on BJP in 2024: Kapil Sibal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress has to be at the centre of any coalition that would take on the BJP in the 2024 general elections and all Opposition parties should be more mindful of sensitivities as well as be circumspect in criticising each other’s ideologies in order to build a strong alliance, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said on Sunday.

Sibal, a prominent voice in the Opposition ranks, gave a clarion call to all political parties opposed to the BJP-led government to first find a common platform which, he said, could also be his newly-launched ‘Insaaf’ platform for fighting injustice.

In an interview with PTI, the former Union minister said the leadership question of an Opposition coalition for 2024 need not be answered at this stage and also cited the example of 2004 when the incumbent Atal Bihari Vajpayee dispensation was voted out of power despite the Opposition not having a declared face.

    MS Education Academy

He asserted that the Congress certainly has to be the fulcrum and at the centre of any coalition of Opposition parties that will take on the BJP in 2024.

Asked if Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar’s statement backing the Adani Group which is facing certain allegations jolted the Opposition unity, Sibal said, “If you narrow down issues then you will have differences among political parties. If you have a broad collaborative platform which does not deal with narrow issues, the possibility of consensus is much greater.”

“If Rahul Gandhi has a point of view in the context of crony capitalism in India, I think Sharad Pawar ji would not be averse to a platform relating to crony capitalism, that subsumes individuals. So what we need is to have these broad platforms on the basis of which we can ensure that the Opposition is united,” he said.

He said the moment issues are narrowed down problems arise and gave the example of parties having different points of view on a particular legislation.

“You should allow different parties to have different views. We should allow Rahul Gandhi to have a view on an individual and Sharad Pawar also have his point of view. That should not be an example of disunity,” said Sibal, who was a Union minister during UPA 1 and 2, and quit the Congress in May last year.

Sibal, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an Independent member with the Samajwadi Party’s support, recently floated a non-electoral platform ‘Insaaf’ aimed at fighting injustice.

“Opposition unity will come about only when we have a broad consensus and a platform that elucidates broad issues of that consensus,” he said.

Sibal said his message to Opposition parties would be that the bottom line is that great injustices social, economic and political are being perpetrated in this country by the diktats of this government.

“In fact the entire Constitution is a narrative of how to achieve justice. So, the fight against injustice can be a common platform,” he said.

On whether his newly floated platform could provide what the Opposition needs, Sibal said “could be”, but added that a lot of work needs to be done to bring all political parties on that platform.

Asked if it was practical that the Opposition parties of diverse backgrounds come together and cede parliamentary seats to each other to take on the BJP jointly in 2024, Sibal said parties have to be more generous, more circumspect in criticising each other’s ideologies and have to realise that wherever they are weak, they should allow the dominant partner to have a say.

On the strengthened Opposition unity during the second half of the budget session of Parliament, especially after the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha, Sibal said as far as the joint protests in Parliament are concerned, that by itself is not a reflection of Opposition unity.

“As far as Opposition unity is concerned this is the first step. We need political parties to be more generous to each other and allow space for each other to have their own ideological moorings but at the same time get together to fight a government which is hell bent on silencing the people of India and converting this so-called democracy into an autocratic country,” he said.

Sibal said that having a common minimum programme for a united Opposition was a “tall order” and it would be decided only a few months before the general elections.

On whether the Adani issue and the caste census be the main planks for the Opposition going forward towards 2024, Sibal said he cannot suggest that as he is just an independent member of Parliament.

“I think the caste census issue is a big issue. It is a big issue in many states, in particular northern India, but whether that will be a unifying factor or whether that will be projected as a national issue, I cannot possibly say,” he added.

On the Adani matter, Sibal said the issue is not about A, B or C, it is how the state and big conglomerates are collaborating with each other to control resources, media, centres of power and along with that the central agencies.

Rebutting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charge that the Opposition is coming together as they are afraid of his government’s anti-corruption crusade, he asked if the Centre was so concerned about graft why did it not appoint a Lokpal for five years after coming to power.

Why has the Lokpal been inactive and not investigated anybody in government, he asked.

“Is it the premise of our dear prime minister that nobody in government in any BJP-ruled states and in the central government can ever be charged for corruption, and that each one of them is as white as snow,” Sibal asked.

He also questioned the prime minister as to why ongoing investigations against those joining the BJP stopped.

“Why is it that the map of India has been divided into two parts, wherever there are BJP-ruled states, the CBI has no access to, while in the Opposition-ruled states, they have complete access,” Sibal said.

This narrative of the prime minister is based on a weak premise, he asserted.

Asked about several Congress leaders quitting the party to join the ideologically opposite BJP, Sibal said that is why he has been calling for an amendment to the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution which deals with the issue of defection.

“Anybody who in the midst of a term of Parliament seeks to leave (a party) and join another party for greener pastures should not be allowed to hold a public post for five years or fight an election,” he said.

Conviction of corrupt more during UPA regime: Kapil Sibal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked CBI not to spare the corrupt, independent MP Kapil Sibal on Tuesday questioned the conviction rate in the current government which was only 71 in 2016.

“PM to CBI : Don’t spare the corrupt,

March 2016 : Jitender Singh told Parliament “

    MS Education Academy

    But the fact is 2013 : 1136 persons convicted for corruption, 2014 : 993,

    2015 : 878, 2016 : 71

“Conviction of the corrupt higher during UPA! Men may lie but facts do not lie

Who is protecting the corrupt?” Sibal tweeted.

On Monday, the Prime Minister attacked the previous dispensations for their apparent lax attitude towards dealing with corruption and said that it was only after 2014, when the BJP-led dispensation came to power, that the malaise was dealt with severely.

Addressing a gathering while inaugurating the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Modi said that unfortunately India got a legacy of corruption at the time of Independence and lamented the fact that instead of removing it, “some people kept nourishing this malady”.

He recalled the “scams and the prevailing sense of impunity just a decade ago, when the UPA dispensation was in power”.

“This situation led to the destruction of the system and an atmosphere of policy paralysis brought the development to stand still,” he said.

After 2014, the Prime Minister reiterated that the priority of the government was to instill faith in the system and for this, the government started taking action against black money and benami property in mission mode and started inflicting damage on the corrupt as well as the reasons behind the corruption.

Why is PM Modi ‘silent’: Kapil Sibal on Bengal, Bihar communal violence

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In the wake of communal violence in West Bengal and Bihar, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Sunday questioned the “silence” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the matter, and said “let not 2024 general elections be the reason” for the violence.

Sibal appealed to the people of the country to put a stop to the “burning of Bengal and Bihar, and to the seeds of hatred” which, he said, can only benefit politicians and political ideologies.

The ordinary man becomes a victim of this hatred, he said in a statement.

    MS Education Academy

“I want the prime minister (Modi) to speak up, I want the home minister (Shah) to speak up and condemn the violence. It is unfortunate that in the midst of this violence neither of them have spoken, why are they quiet,” he asked.

“It is my earnest appeal to all those, and it may not be about one particular party, who are responsible for this madness. The country needs to move forward away from the environment that is being created. Let not 2024 be the reason for this,” the former Union minister said.

Sibal said let the rule of law prevail.

Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday expressed concern over incidents of communal violence in Bihar, and spoke to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to take stock of the situation.

Sibal said it was not enough to express concern.

His statement comes after communal violence rocked Sasaram and Bihar Sharif towns during Ram Navami festivities.

The police till Saturday arrested 45 people in connection with the communal violence at Sasaram and Bihar Sharif.

Vehicles, houses and shops were torched and several people injured in the communal flare-ups reported in both towns.

Howrah’s Shibpur and Kazipara area in West Bengal had also witnessed clashes during a Ram Navami procession.

Sibal, who was a Union minister during the UPA 1 and 2 regimes, quit the Congress in May last year and was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an independent member with the Samajwadi Party’s support. He recently floated a non-electoral platform ‘Insaaf’ aimed at fighting injustice.

Kapil Sibal accuses ED of selectively targeting Opposition-governed states

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Saturday accused the BJP-led government of misusing probe agencies, saying that the Enforcement Directorate sees the Indian map in a different way, targeting only Opposition-ruled states.

The former Union minister and eminent lawyer, while addressing a gathering at Jantar Mantar to lay down the agenda and a new vision for the country with his newly-launched platform ‘Insaaf’, referred to the raids on properties related to former Bihar chief minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family members, and said it was BJP’s reaction to losing power in Bihar.

“You can see what is happening in Bihar. They felt Tejashwi and JD-U are coming together… It’s been years since Lalu ji left the post of CM. They came to remember the case all of sudden,” he said.

“The ED sees the Indian map in a different way. They see only opposition ruled states, they don’t go to BJP states,” he said.

Congress MP from Rajya Sabha Vivek Tankha was also present at the dias with Sibal. Both Tankha and Sibal were a part of the rebel group of Congress leaders which came to be known as the ‘G-23’.

“Every political party has their own ideology, but when you read the preamble of the Indian Constitution, the basis of the Constitution is justice,” said Sibal.

Accusing the BJP of “buying” MLAs, and destabilising Opposition governments in states, he demanded stricter anti-defection laws.

“What kind of politics is this? Defectors become Ministers! Those who defect from their party should be banned from becoming ministers or fighting elections for five years” he said.

He also pitched for Rs 50,000 salary for school teachers, free education for women, and cheap healthcare among other things, as part of his new vision.

Tankha, meanwhile, said ‘Insaaf’ will become the voice of 130 crore people of India.

“Everyone wants justice, but there are a very few who can fight for it. This will become the voice of 133 crore Indians. We hope that it will transform transform into a people’s movement,” he said about the portal.

Several opposition leaders, including Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, have expressed support for Sibal’s platform to fight against justice.

At a press conference last week, Sibal had launched the platform against the “injustice prevailing in the country” calling on chief ministers and leaders of opposition parties to support him in his effort.

Sibal, who had been a Union minister during the UPA I and II, had quit the Congress in May last year and was elected to Rajya Sabha as an independent with the support of the Samajwadi Party.

Earlier, Sibal had announced that a website ‘insaafkesipahi.co.in’ has been set up to fight injustice and anyone could register on it.

The non-electoral political platform is called ‘Insaaf’ while anyone who registers on the website to fight injustice would become an ‘insaaf ka sipahi’.

This will be a national level platform where lawyers will be at the forefront, he had said.

Kejriwal extends support to Kapil Sibal’s new platform ‘Insaaf’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday appealed to people, including lawyers, to join Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal’s newly launched platform ‘Insaaf’ to fight injustice.

It’s a very good initiative, he said.

Sibal, an eminent lawyer and an independent Rajya Sabha member, announced on Saturday that he was launching a new platform called ‘Insaaf’ to fight “injustice” prevailing in the country, and sought the support of chief ministers and other Opposition leaders.

“This is a very important initiative of Kapil Sibal sahib. I appeal to everyone to join this and we will fight injustice together,” Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.

Later, speaking to reporters, the Delhi chief minister said Sibal is a well-known lawyer who is very active when it comes to social and political issues.

With his initiative, Sibal wants to connect people from various sections of the society, especially lawyers from across the country, he said.

It’s a very good initiative by Sibal, the AAP national convener added.

“I appeal to the lawyers and people of the country to join this initiative and make every possible effort to help aggrieved persons get justice, wherever there is injustice with anybody, Kejriwal said.

The Delhi BJP, however, reminded Kejriwal that when he was part of the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement, its members had staged a protest outside Sibal’s residence and called him a “thief”.

“During the IAC movement, a demonstration was organised outside Kapil Sibal’s house and he was called a thief, and today sahib,” Delhi BJP spokesperson Khemchand Sharma said in a tweet in response to Kejriwal’s post.

“Now neither the contractor of thieves nor the sahib of thieves will be able to save the corrupt,” the BJP leader said in Hindi.

Announcing his new platform on Saturday, Sibal alleged a government working against the citizens is at the helm.

He said he would hold a public meeting of the new platform at Jantar Mantar on March 11 and put forward a new vision of India there. He said it was an open invitation to everyone, including opposition leaders and common people, to join him at the event.

Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray also came out in support of his ‘Insaaf’ platform.

“Everyone who wants democracy to survive and thrive should stand firmly with Kapil Sibal in his new initiative,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav also expressed solidarity with Sibal’s “ideas” and said lawyers along with the people of India must unite to “save” the unity and integrity of the country.

“We are in solidarity with your ideas, Kapil Sibal ji. I agree lawyers have an important role and along with citizens of India they must unite to save the unity and integrity of this great country,” the RJD leader said in a tweet on Saturday.

He said on March 11, he will hold a meeting of the initiative at Jantar Mantar where he will put forward a vision for India.
