Washington: Washington DC-based Indian journalist Lalit Jha was physically attacked and verbally abused by pro-Khalistan supporters while he was covering a pro-Khalistan protest outside the Indian Embassy on Saturday afternoon.

Jha on Sunday thanked US Secret Service for protecting him, and helping him do his job. He said he was hit on his left ear with two sticks by pro-Khalistan supporters. He also shared a video of the Khalistani supporters on his Twitter handle.

“Thank you @SecretService 4 my protection 2day 4 helping do my job, otherwise I would have been writing this from hospital. The gentleman below hit my left ear with these 2 sticks & earlier I had to call 9/11 & rushed 2 police van 4 safety fearing physical assault,” Jha tweeted on Sunday.

“At one point I felt so threatened that I called 911. I then spotted Secret Service officers and narrated the incident to them,” Jha told ANI, adding the protesters took charge of the situation.

However, the journalist decided to take no action against those who heckled him.

“The pro-Khalistan protestors in support of Amrit Pal waved Khalistan flags and descended upon the embassy in the presence of the US Secret Service. They even openly threatened to vandalize the embassy and threatened the Indian Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu,” Jha told ANI.

The protesters included turbaned men of all ages who raised pro-Khalistan slogans. They came in from different parts of the DC-Maryland- Virginia (DMV) area. The organisers used mics to make anti-India speeches both in English and Punjabi languages and targeted the Punjab Police for alleged human rights violations.

Multiple events of protests by supporters of Khalistan have been staged outside the Indian embassy and the San Francisco Consulate. Earlier this week the Indian Consulate in San Francisco was also attacked on March 20.

Visuals shared online show a huge mob brandishing Khalistan flags mounted on wooden poles, using them to smash glass doors and windows of the consulate building. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans as they broke through makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the premises.

The United States strongly condemned the attack on the Indian consulate in San Francisco by a group of separatist Sikhs, terming it absolutely unacceptable.

The United States has condemned the attack on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco and any attack against diplomatic facilities within the US. The US has pledged to defend the safety, and security of these facilities as well as the diplomats who work within them.

“The United States condemns the attack against the Indian Consulate and any attack against diplomatic facilities within the United States. We pledge to defend the safety and security of these facilities as well as the diplomats who work within them,” US State Department spokesperson told ANI.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said via Twitter that the US condemns the acts of violence against the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. He further said that the US is committed to the safety and security of Indian diplomats.

He confirmed that the US State Department is in touch with the local law enforcement authorities.

Assault on journo case: Salman Khan’s plea to be heard on Mar 30

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court will on March 30 give its ruling on Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s plea challenging the process (summons) issued to him by a lower court in a case related to his alleged misbehaviour with a journalist in 2019.

The HC, after hearing submissions of both sides, on Thursday reserved its order for March 30.

Journalist Ashok Pandey had alleged that in April 2019, Khan and his bodyguard Nawaz Shaikh had abused and assaulted him. He had filed a private complaint before the magistrate’s court in suburban Andheri, seeking criminal action against the duo.

The magistrate’s court, presiding over the complaint, had issued summons to the 57-year-old superstar last year after noting that a police report submitted in the matter stated that offences under Indian Penal Code sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) are made out against the accused persons.

Later, Khan had approached the HC challenging the process (summons) issued to him by the lower court. The ‘Dabangg’ actor, in his plea, had sought the HC to quash the lower court order.

Pandey had alleged the actor had snatched his mobile phone while cycling on a Mumbai street when some mediapersons started clicking his photos.

The filmstar had allegedly entered into an argument with him and also issued threat, the journalist had claimed in the complaint.

Delhi HC stays proceedings in defamation case against journo by BJP’s Tajinder Bagga

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday stayed the proceedings before the trial court in a defamation case lodged by Delhi BJP spokesperson Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga against journalist Swati Chaturvedi.

Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar issued notice on the petition by Chaturvedi challenging the summons issued by the trial court to her on the defamation complaint and asked Bagga to file his response to the plea in two weeks.

“Till then, trial proceedings are stayed,” said the judge.

The counsel appearing for the petitioner contended that no case for defamation was made out from the material on record and the complainant has not even brought forth witnesses before the trial court to substantiate his claim that his reputation was lowered due to the actions of Chaturvedi.

The defamation case arises from a tweet Chaturvedi allegedly posted in 2017 in which she claimed Bagga had not only beaten up a lawyer once but was also arrested in a sexual harassment matter.

Bagga’s counsel had told the trial court that the tweet was made after he was appointed a BJP spokesperson.

The counsel for the complainant defended the summoning order and said the petition lacked merit and the issue of lowering of reputation was a question of fact to be decided during the trial.

It was also said that there is no necessity under the law to examine any witness on the issue of loss of reputation at this stage.

The counsel, who opposed stay on trial court proceedings, also said the allegation pertaining to the sexual harassment case was absolutely incorrect and the matter relating to beating up a lawyer was sub-judice.

The petitioner’s lawyer said Bagga himself acknowledged the incident where he beat up another lawyer and the victim of the sexual harassment case in question had also earlier tweeted about it.

A magisterial court order had directed Chaturvedi to appear before it in the case filed by Bagga in May 2018.

The matter will be heard next on July 18.
