Uber auto-rickshaw driver arrested for sexually harassing Delhi journalist

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: An Uber auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested for sexually harassing a journalist during a ride from her residence to her friend’s place in south Delhi, police said on Friday.

The accused was identified as Vinod Kumar Yadav, 24, a resident of Noida’s Sector 123 and native of Bihar’s Madhubani.

The incident occurred on Wednesday and the journalist also shared the video of the incident on social media.

According to police, on March 2, at about 11.00 pm,, the journalist, a resident of Bharat Nagar, approached New Friends Colony police station and filed a complaint against a TSR (auto-rickshaw) driver.

“She levelled allegations of indecent behaviour as well as lascivious staring by him, while she was travelling from New Friends Colony to Malviya Nagar on March 1 about 4.40 p.m.. Accordingly, a case under relevant sections of IPC was registered and investigation taken up,” said a senior police official.

“The ownership of the auto-rickshaw was procured which was found in the name of Mohd Yunus Khan, a resident of Nehru Camp, Govindpuri. Yunus was questioned and it came to light that the TSR was already purchased by Vinod,” said the official.

“Meanwhile technical surveillance was also applied and Vinod was detained and interrogated and he was confirmed to be the alleged and hence arrested. All legal formalities including statement under section 164 Code of Criminal Procedure was completed,” said the official, adding that further investigation is in progress.

Earlier, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal has also issued notice to Uber India and Delhi Police over the incident.

“Notice has been issued to Uber India and Delhi Police over the unfortunate incident of molestation of a female journalist in an Uber Auto in Delhi,” Maliwal tweeted.

Narrating her ordeal on Twitter, the woman journalist said that when she boarded an auto-rickshaw from her residence in New Friends Colony to Malviya Nagar to visit her friend, the driver, identified as Vinod Kumar, started staring at her inappropriately through the side mirrors of the auto, “precisely at her breasts”.

“I took an auto from my home to a friend’s place. After a while, I noticed that the driver was looking at me through the side mirrors of the auto, precisely at my breasts. I shifted a bit towards the right and wasn’t visible in the left side mirror,” she said.

“He then started looking into the right side of the mirror. I then shifted to the extreme left and wasn’t visible in any of the mirrors. He then started looking back again and again to see me. I first tried using the safety feature of @uber, but to no avail”.

“The first time I dialled the number, the audio wasn’t clear. I then confronted him and said that I would raise a complaint. I even asked him to focus on driving. To this, he said, “kardo” (do it) and I then redialed the number but couldn’t hear the audio due to poor network”.

  • Delhi HC seeks Centre’s reply on journalist Angad Singh’s plea

Delhi HC seeks Centre’s reply on journalist Angad Singh’s plea

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked the Central government to file a proper counter affidavit to a Vice News journalist Angad Singh’s plea challenging his deportation from Delhi to New York in August last year and being “blacklisted” despite being an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holder.

Appearing for the Centre, advocate Anurag Ahluwalia had last month told the court that as the US-based journalist has violated Section 11A of the Foreigners Order, 1948, which prohibits a foreigner from producing any picture, film or documentary without permission in writing from the Centre, he is a blacklisted subject.

During the hearing on Tuesday, appearing for Singh, Advocate Swathi Sukumar said that she had moved an amendment application against the blacklisting which was mentioned in the counter affidavit of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The FRRO, in an affidavit, told the court that Singh was blacklisted at the instance of the Consulate General of India in New York.

According to the affidavit, Singh had allegedly depicted India in a negative manner in the “India Burning” documentary.

Ahluwalia had earlier submitted that Singh was entering India on his journalist visa for a personal visit but he wasn’t issued a visa for that.

On Tuesday, Sukumar further said that she did not have a copy of the blacklisting order.

Ahluwalia said that he would file a “detailed response”. He added that the primary condition was that Singh comes to the place, makes a video, gives it to the consulate general for approval, once approved, then the video could have been made public.

Sukumar argued that the Centre had to seek instructions on whether any proceedings were initiated for cancellation of Singh’s OCI card.

To this, Ahluwalia said that they have not initiated any proceedings as of now and added that filing the blacklisting order may not be necessary.

While allowing the amendment to the writ petition and directing the Centre to file a proper counter affidavit to the amended petition, the court noted: “It is submitted by the Centre that their stand would be stated in the counter affidavit which is now to be filed in the amended writ.”

The court listed the matter for the next hearing in May.

Singh has covered important issues in his documentaries, including the Shaheen Bagh protests, the farmers’ protests and the Covid-19 pandemic in India, among others.

In his plea, Singh has mentioned that his fundamental right under the Citizenship Act, 1955, is being violated by not letting him into India.

Earlier, Singh’s counsel had sought a declaration that his deportation from the government was illegal and disclosure of all the materials and data available with the government related to him.

“I want to acknowledge what a horrible day this has been for our community and our media partners,” Mina told a room full of reporters. “I work closely with all of you and know many of you and know the the very difficult job that you do and also the very important job that you do for our community and for law enforcement. No one in our community — not a mother, not a 9-year-old and certainly not news professionals — should become the victim of gun violence in our community.”

Mina said they don’t immediately have a motive for any of the shootings.

Deputies had initially responded to the Pine Hills area, just northwest of Orlando, on Wednesday morning following reports of a woman in her 20s being shot.

According to witnesses, a man approached the news vehicle later Wednesday and opened fire and then walked to a nearby home and shot the mother and daughter.

Mina said Moses is already facing a murder charge for the initial victim, and charges are expected soon for the other four victims. Moses’ criminal history includes gun charges, as well as aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and grand theft offenses, the sheriff said.

Spectrum News 13 is not yet identifying the crew members who were involved in the shooting, according to a story on the TV station’s website.

  • Journalist held without trial in China said to need urgent medical attention

Journalist held without trial in China said to need urgent medical attention

    [ad_1]

Advocates for a Chinese journalist and activist who has been held in detention without trial for almost 18 months have said she needs urgent medical attention.

Huang Xueqin and Wang Jianbing, a labour rights activist, were detained in September 2021 and formally arrested a month later. They have been accused of inciting subversion of state power, and held in Guangzhou without access to family or lawyers.

Advocates and human rights groups have said the pair should never have been arrested. This week they said information had been brought to them that raised concerns about Huang’s health in particular. They said they were told she has lost a lot of weight, stopped menstruating, and is suffering from untreated long-term conditions and deficiencies.

“It is of great concern that these conditions, if not treated promptly and appropriately, have the potential to gradually cause permanent damage to the body,” they said.

The advocates also accused authorities of “trying to exert mental pressure and physical torture” of Huang, through repeatedly waking her at night for interrogation and depriving her of sleep.

“These circumstances are only the tip of the iceberg of what we can learn about Huang Xueqin’s detention situation,” the advocates said. “Due to the inability to learn more about Xueqin’s current appointment of official lawyers, it is difficult for us to obtain information on her physical and mental health and the progress of the case.”

The Guardian contacted the Guangzhou No 2 detention centre, but an employee said he was not aware of the case and declined to comment.

Huang is an independent journalist and was a prominent voice of the #MeToo movement in China. She and Wang were detained at Wang’s house shortly before Huang was scheduled to leave China for the UK to begin a master’s at the University of Sussex. Dozens of their friends and contacts were questioned by public security officials in subsequent weeks, in a manner the US-based Chinese Human Rights Defenders organisation described as harassment and interrogation.

“Those interrogated shared afterward that authorities downloaded the contents of their smartphones for investigation and pressured them to sign fabricated testimonies asserting that Huang and Wang had organised gatherings at Wang’s apartment to discuss politically sensitive topics,” the organisation said.

William Nee, a researcher at the organisation, said the latest news of Huang’s health was “alarming”. “She should never have been detained in the first place, but this now adds extra urgency for the Chinese government to release her,” Nee said.

He said Huang was a “victim of incommunicado detention, which is a gross human rights violation”.

Under an increasingly authoritarian environment in Xi Jinping-ruled China, human rights groups, activists, lawyers and protesters are increasingly targeted by authorities, with growing concerns about the number of detentions, arrests, interrogations and convictions.

Li Maizi, a veteran feminist activist in Beijing, said feminists were particularly targeted. “Once you are a feminist, you are a feminist activist. You are going to be stigmatised as a traitor, a Hong Kong movement supporter, [as] are trying to divide our country,” she said.

Li said Guangzhou used to be a “free space” for activism but had become “very hostile” in the last decade, prompting many to leave.

“I think Huang Xueqin’s case is under this background,” Li said.

After two years in jail, Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan walks free

    [ad_1]

After spending two years in Lucknow jail, Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan finally walked out free on Thursday. The sessions court had ordered his bail the previous day.

“I will continue my fight against draconian laws. They kept me in jail even after I got bail. I don’t know who’s benefiting from me being in jail. These two years were very tough, but I was never afraid,” he told NDTV after his release.

Kappan was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police in October 2020 while on his way to Hathras district where a Dalit woman had died after being allegedly gang raped. A case was lodged under the draconian UAPA (Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act).

He was arrested by the Mathura police for having links with the Popular Front of India and being a part of a “conspiracy” to instigate violence.

However, after the Supreme Court of India granted bail to the journalist in the UAPA on September 9 and Allahabad High Court also granted the same in the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act), Kappan’s release was marred by difficulties in finding two local sureties.

A surety is a person that assures the defendant will attend his or her court hearing after being granted bail.

In 2020, a Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh. Her body was cremated by the police and village administration without the knowledge of her family members leading to widespread protests and condemnation.

  • Iran: Journalist to serve 2 yrs in jail for Amini’s father’s interview

Iran: Journalist to serve 2 yrs in jail for Amini’s father’s interview

    [ad_1]

Tehran: The Iranian judicial authorities sentenced journalist Nazila Maroufian to two years in prison, for interviewing Amjad Amini, father of Mahsa Amini, whose death in a headquarters of the morality police sparked protests that have been going on in country for months.

Iranian journalist Nazila Maroofian on Saturday announced that the verdict was issued against her without court hearing, after she was arrested on Sunday, October 30, on the grounds of her interview with Mahsa Amini’s father.

“Based on the decision of Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Afshari, I have been sentenced to two years in prison, a fine…and a five-year ban from leaving the country,” Nazila Maroofian tweeted.

Nazila continued, “This verdict was issued without a hearing and defense pleadings,” adding that she was accused of “propaganda against the regime and spreading false news.”

It is noteworthy that the Iranian regime continues to suppress voices opposing it and the press, as Tehran journalists association estimates that at least 28 Iranian journalists have been arrested since the outbreak of the protests.

Iran has been witnessing protests since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, on September 16, after she was arrested in Tehran by the morality police on suspicion of not respecting the country’s dress code.

The demonstrations involved people from all walks of life and different sects in Iran after Amini’s killing.

Iranian women are at the fore in the demonstrations, in which many young people participate, to chants of “Woman life freedom” and “Death to the dictator.”

The protests represent one of the country’s boldest challenges since the 1979 revolution.

  • S P K Gupta, the quintessential Agency Journalist, passes away in Delhi

S P K Gupta, the quintessential Agency Journalist, passes away in Delhi

    [ad_1]

If Dr Yellapragada SubbaRow, the unsung hero of modern medicine, described by some as the ‘miracle man of miracle drugs’, largely ignored by the West is at least known to India, a sizeable share of the credit should go to S P K Gupta, a veteran journalist and chronicler of Science history.

For over 50 years, he relentlessly strived to bring to light the extraordinary contributions of the Indian origin scientist, Dr SubbaRow who worked wonders with Pharma companies in the UK and US during the early 1900s. Gupta wrote books titled ‘In quest of panacea”, Wizard of Wonderdrugs; Dr Yellapragada SubbaRow. Gupta wrote: He lived so that we may live longer.

Ironically, while a feature film is underway capturing the life of Dr SubbaRow for the celluloid and the OTT platforms, the 92-year-old, Sikharam Prasanna Kumar Gupta, a former PTI foreign desk editor, passed away in New Delhi on Sunday night at AIIMS after a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife Devi and two sons, who are both in the US. Incidentally, his father-in-law, Panikkar, was the Manager of the PTI in Kurnool during the 1950s, when it was the capital of the Andhra State and later in Hyderabad.

Born in Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, Gupta worked for the Press Trust of India (PTI) in various roles for 38 years including a long stint as the Moscow correspondent. Beginning his career in 1952, he served as the news agency’s bureau chief and as its foreign editor in New Delhi.

During a long and illustrious career, Gupta covered many historic events including the rise and fall of the Soviet Union; he was the first Indian journalist to interview Mikhail Gorbachev, the Russian Premier; the historic flight of Squadron Leader Rakesh Sharma from Baikanour in 1984; the Bangladesh War; the 1969 Congress split and; the Allahabad High Court judgement on Indira Gandhi that was followed by imposition of Emergency etc.

Post his retirement from PTI in 1990, Gupta took to writing books. Among the notable ones In Quest of Panacea;  A Wreath for Doctor Ramayya,  and The Rise and Eclipse of the Soviet Civilisation. At the time of his death, he was working on two more books, one of which was the biography of Homi Bhabha.
Though well settled in Gulmohar Park in New Delhi, he kept himself busy in writing and chronicling Indian science, biographies and promoting Dr SubbaRow. His ‘Ellas Cottage’, home was overflowing with books, papers, manuscripts and rare material.
In recent years, he has been donating them for public archives, says Dr Dinesh Sharma, well known Science Journalist and author, who has been interacting with him over the years.
Always curious, hardworking and encouraging young journalists, Gupta was active in the Indian Science Writers Association (ISWA) and science popularisation. During the mid 1990s when I was the Secretary and Dr K S Jayaraman, Science Editor, PTI was President, I recall his his unstinted support in organising events.
I recall his several visits to Hyderabad to convince the State government to accord recognition to Dr Yellapragada SubbaRow, who also hailed from Bhimavaram in coastal Andhra Pradesh. His efforts succeeded partially when the bust of the great medical researcher was installed in the Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences ( NIMS) and an exhibition was held at the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN).
Dr SubbaRow discovered the antibiotic aureomycin,  invented the phosphate estimation method, the anti cancer and anti rheumatoid methotrexate, drug for elephantiasis and many other drugs. The pioneering biochemist, died in 1948 at the young age of 53.
“ SPK Gupta was a no nonsense man. He helped me in my style of reporting and we were close family friends” recalled, N V R Swami, another PTI veteran, who covered the African continent extensively for over a decade as the foreign correspondent based in Harare.
“S P K Gupta’s death is a big loss to science, journalism and especially history of science, not only for India but for the whole world,” said Prof. Raghuram from the School of Biotechnology at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi.

The faculty of biotechnology at the University held a condolence meeting on Gupta today. He was a regular visitor to this university, as it celebrated Yellapgrada SubbaRow’s birthday every January for over 20 years through a memorial lecture by a leading scientist and a documentary film and a poster exhibition on his life and works prepared by Gupta.
