Nabi won the second prize in the “Outstanding Contribution to Peace” category, and the Fetisov Journalism Awards praised her reporting for providing a “comprehensive and impressively detailed picture” of the issue.

According to a press release from the awards, Nabi’s story “highlights what is not known, shows the human consequences of neglect, and most emphatically gives voice to the people totally disregarded by their own authorities and whose ordeal is largely invisible to international audiences.”

The Fetisov Journalism Awards have four categories in total, and each winner in the three categories shares a cash prize of 130,000 Swiss francs (Rs 11, 94,371).

Nabi’s award-winning reporting brings attention to an often-overlooked issue and highlights the struggles faced by “half-widows” in Kashmir, whose stories are often ignored.

Egypt releases Al-Jazeera journalist after 4 years

    [ad_1]

Cairo: The Egyptian authorities on Monday released Hisham Abdel Aziz, a journalist for Al-Jazeera Mubasher, after nearly 4 years of detention.

The family of Hisham confirmed the implementation of the decision to release him and his arrival at his home in Cairo.

The head of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate, Khaled Al-Balshi, wrote on his Facebook account, “Congratulations for the release of fellow journalist Hisham Abdel Aziz and his arrival at his home.. Wishing the rest of the imprisoned colleagues.”

He added, “Thank you very much to everyone who helped his release and created the joy that controlled him during the first phone call with me after his release to freedom, and I sincerely wish that the joy reaches the homes of the rest of the imprisoned colleagues, and that the pre-trial detention file is completely terminated.”

46-year-old Hisham Abdel Aziz had been working as a journalist and senior producer for Al-Jazeera Mubasher since 2011.

Egyptian security authorities arrested Hisham in June 2019, and was accused of “joining a terrorist group”, an allegation often used by the regime in Cairo to crack down on journalists and political dissidents.

The Egyptian authorities are still detaining two other Al-Jazeera Mubasher journalists, Bahaa El-Din Ibrahim and Rabih El-Sheikh, all of whom were arrested while they were on a regular vacation to Egypt outside the scope of their work.

Al-Jazeera Network called in several statements to the Egyptian authorities to immediately release its journalists.

  • Russia denies US consular visit to jailed journalist Evan Gershkovich

Russia denies US consular visit to jailed journalist Evan Gershkovich

    [ad_1]

Russia’s foreign ministry has denied a request from the US for a consular visit to Evan Gershkovich, the American Wall Street Journal reporter jailed on espionage charges.

The ministry said it rejected the request for the 11 May visit in retaliation for the US refusing to grant visas to Russian journalists who planned to accompany Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, on a trip to the UN.

Gershkovich has been in custody since his arrest on 29 March by Russia’s security service on espionage charges that he, his employer and the US government have denied.

He is the first correspondent since the cold war to be detained in Russia on spying charges, and his arrest rattled journalists in the country and drew outrage in the west.

The US has declared Gershkovich to be wrongfully detained and demanded his immediate release.

The Russian denial of the American request for a consular visit to Gershkovich followed Lavrov warning that Moscow “will not forget and will not forgive” the denial of the visas to Russian journalists.

The foreign ministry said on Friday it was also considering other retaliatory measures.

“A protest note was presented in connection with the provocative conduct of the US diplomatic mission, which thwarted the issuing of visas to mass media representatives from the press pool of Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, who were supposed to accompany him on his trip to New York as part of Russia’s presidency of the UN security council,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

“The US embassy was informed in this connection that its request for consular access to US citizen Gershkovich, detained on suspicion of espionage, on 11 May was declined,” the ministry statement said. “Other possible retaliatory measures, about which the US side will be duly notified, are being considered.”

  • Journalist Tucker Carlson leaves Fox News

Journalist Tucker Carlson leaves Fox News

    [ad_1]

Washington: America-based news channel Fox News and its host Tucker Carlson agreed to part ways, Fox News said on Monday.

In a statement, Fox News said, “FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways. We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor.”

“Mr Carlson’s last program was Friday, April 21st. Fox News Tonight will air live at 8 PM/ET starting this evening as an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named,” it added.

    MS Education Academy

This announcement came after Fox News settled a monster defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems for USD 787.5 million over the network’s dissemination of election lies, according to CNN News.

Tucker Carlson was a key figure in Dominion Voting Systems’ mammoth defamation lawsuit against Fox News, which the parties settled last week on the brink of trial for a historic USD 787 million.

In some ways, Carlson played an outsized role in the litigation: Only one of the 20 allegedly defamatory Fox broadcasts mentioned in the lawsuit came from Carlson’s top-rated show. But, as CNN exclusively reported, he was set to be one of Dominion’s first witnesses to testify at trial. And his private text messages, which became public as part of the suit, reverberated nationwide.

Dominion got its hands on Carlson’s group chat with fellow Fox primetime stars Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, and a trove of other messages from around the 2020 presidential election.

These all communications revealed that Carlson had told confidants that he “passionately” hated former President Donald Trump and said that his tenure in the White House was a “disaster.” However, he took the interview with Trump recently.

Carlson’s departure at Fox News comes after the network also severed ties with right-wing supporter Dan Bongino, who had been a regular fixture on the network’s programming, in addition to hosting a weekend show, reported CNN.

“Folks, regretfully, last week was my last show on Fox News on the Fox News Channel,” Bongino said on Rumble, chalking up the exit to a contract dispute.

“So the show ending last week was tough. And I want you to know it’s not some big conspiracy. I promise you. There’s not, there’s no acrimony. This wasn’t some, like, WWE brawl that happened. We just couldn’t come to terms with an extension. And that’s really it.”

Fox News responded in a statement, “We thank Dan for his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavours,” according to CNN.

Pakistani-Canadian journalist Tarek Fatah passes away after prolonged illness

    [ad_1]

Ottawa: Pakistani-Canadian columnist Tarek Fatah passed away on Monday after a prolonged battle with Cancer, his daughter Natasha Fatah, who herself is a journalist, shared the news.

“Lion of Punjab. Son of Hindustan. Lover of Canada. Speaker of truth. Fighter for justice. Voice of the down-trodden, underdogs, and the oppressed. Tarek Fatah has passed the baton on… his revolution will continue with all who knew and loved him. Will you join us? 1949-2023,” Natasha tweeted.

Born in Karachi, Pakistan before emigrating to Canada in 1987, Fatah was an award-winning reporter, columnist, and radio and television commentator, both in Canada and abroad, with a huge social media following, according to Toronto Sun.
Fatah, who died at 73, was a political activist, a fierce defender of human rights and a staunch opponent of religious fanaticism in any form, nothing scared Tarek Fatah.

As a secular Muslim who authored books titled The Jew is Not My Enemy: Unveiling the Myths that Fuel Muslim Anti-Semitism and Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State, Tarek was never deterred by controversy.

On the contrary, he would dive right in.

As one of many examples, he was a fierce critic of Pakistan and an advocate for the Baloch separatist movement, fighting for an independent Balochistan state.

Expressing his condolences over the death of the columnist, “Kashmir Files” film director Vivek Agnihotri tweeted, “There was one and only @TarekFatah- daring, funny, knowledgable, sharp thinker, great orator and a fearless fighter. Tarek, my brother, it was a delight to have you as a close friend. Will you be able to rest in peace? Om Shanti.”

“Be sure that we will not forget and will not forgive,” he said.

“I emphasize that we will find ways to respond to this, so that the Americans will remember for a long time not to do this,” deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said.

The dispute comes in the wake of high tensions with Washington over the arrest last month of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, whom Russia accuses of espionage. The United States has declared him to be “wrongfully detained.”

Many Western journalists stationed in Moscow left the country after Russia sent troops into Ukraine. Russia currently requires foreign journalists to renew their visas and accreditation every three months, compared to once a year before the fighting began.

  • HC Quashes Detention Of Journalist Fahad Shah

HC Quashes Detention Of Journalist Fahad Shah

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The High Court on Thursday quashed the detention of a journalist Fahad Shah and directed the authorities to release him forthwith.

Justice Wasim Sadiq Nargal said that Fahad should be “set at liberty forthwith if not required in any other case.”

“In the present case, the procedural requirement has not been followed and complied with by respondents in letter and spirit and as a corollary thereof, the petition is required to be allowed and the detention order is liable to be quashed,” the Court said.

The Court also said that no compelling reasons have been given or shown by the detaining authority while passing the detention order against Shah when he was already in custody and under an FIR in which no bail had been granted.

“In absence of any compelling reasons, the order of detention cannot sustain the test of law,” the court said.

On March 3, 2022, the District Magistrate Srinagar had passed an order under section 8 of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978, placing Shah under preventive detention to “prevent him from indulging in the activities which are prejudicial to the maintenance of public order.”

During arguments, counsel for Shah, N A Ronga, described the allegations against Shah as baseless, unfounded vague and without any substance, saying there is not an iota of truth in the allegations.

Shah was arrested on February 2, 2022, by Jammu and Kashmir police in Pulwama district and booked under Section 13 of ULA (P), section 124A and Section 505 IPC.

Shah filed a bail application before a Court in Pulwama and he was granted bail. However, when the order of the Court was served upon the police concerned, they did not release him and shifted him to the Police Station Imam Sahib Shopian.

In Shopian, an FIR under sections 153 and 505 of the IPC was registered against him. In this case, he filed a bail application before the Court and was granted bail. But he was not released by the police and was shifted to the Safakadal area of Srinagar. At the police station, Safakadal another FIR was registered against him. While in custody at Safakadal, the district magistrate Srinagar passed a detention order against Shah.

Ronga argued Shah was not provided with a copy of the dossier, material or other records including the copies of FIRs that have been referred to and relied upon by the detaining authority while framing grounds of detention and passing the detention order. “Thus he was deprived of his constitutional and legal right of making a meaningful and effective representation against his detention.”

He also said since the bail was not granted in the FIR registered at the police station Safakdal against Shah there was no reason to detain him under J&K Public Safety Act. (KNO)

  • Court Quashes PSA Against Kashmiri Journalist

Court Quashes PSA Against Kashmiri Journalist

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: On Thursday, the Jammu Kashmir High Court overturned the Public Safety Act of Kashmiri journalist Fahad Shah, who has been detained at Kot Balwal jail in Jammu since June 2022, nearly 300 kilometres away from his home in Srinagar’s Soura. Despite calls from organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) for his release, Fahad has remained in detention for over a year.

Fahad was initially arrested by Pulwama Police on February 4, 2022, for social media posts that were deemed to glorify terrorist activities and harm the image of law enforcement agencies, as well as cause ill-will and disaffection towards the country.

Although he was granted bail in that case on February 26, he was arrested again by Srinagar police on March 5 in connection with a report on his news portal from January 2021, and was granted bail again on March 14 before being moved to Kupwara District jail on March 16. He was later shifted to Kot Balwal jail on June 9, after being booked under the Public Safety Act.

In the PSA dossier submitted to the District Magistrate of Srinagar, the Jammu and Kashmir police accused Fahad of propagating stories that were in line with ISI/separatist propaganda, posting anti-national content, and glorifying stone pelters, terrorists, and separatism.

The dossier also claimed that Fahad’s news portal, The Kashmir Walla, published stories that were against the interest and security of the nation, and that they mostly highlighted the allegations of the Kashmir conflict and the “Indian state’s highhandedness.”

Despite securing bail twice before, Fahad was arrested for the third time and booked under a fresh PSA case on Monday. The police described Fahad as an “instigator” and accused him of working against the ethics of journalism by posting anti-national content that had a negative impact on the sovereignty and unity of the country. The PSA dossier concluded that Fahad could pose a serious threat to the security of J&K by way of his unlawful activities. (KDC)

Johnny Depp’s ‘Jeanne du Barry’ director Maiwenn sued for assaulting journalist

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles: French actor-director Maiwenn, who recently directed Johnny Depp starrer ‘Jeanne du Barry’, has landed in legal trouble.

According to Variety, she is being sued by Edwy Plenel, the editor-in-chief of Mediapart magazine for allegedly attacking him at a restaurant.

A police complaint was filed on March 7 by Plenel, accusing Maiween of aggression. In the complaint, Plenel alleged that he was assaulted by Maiwenn in late February while eating at a restaurant in the posh seventh arrondissement of Paris.

Maiwenn, who was sitting by herself at a nearby table, allegedly came to his table and grabbed him by the hair before spitting in his face without saying a word, then stormed out of the venue, leaving Plenel “traumatised by the incident.”

While the police report was filed a month ago, it leaked Friday, just a day after the Cannes Film Festival announced that Maiwenn’s movie had been chosen to open its 76th edition.

Though Mediapart hasn’t ever investigated Maiwenn, it published a series of bombshell stories about her ex-husband Luc Besson, with whom she shares a daughter, Shanna Besson.

Maiwenn cast Depp to play French king Louis XV in ‘Jeanne du Barry’ while he was in the middle of his legal battle against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Maiwenn stars in the leading role as Jeanne du Barry, Louis XV’s greatest love whom he brought into the Versailles palace to live near him even though she wasn’t a noble.
