  • Ex-Odisha CM Giridhar Gamang joins BRS quitting BJP

Ex-Odisha CM Giridhar Gamang joins BRS quitting BJP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Former Odisha chief minister and nine-term Lok Sabha MP from tribal-dominated Koraput seat, Giridhar Gamang, joined the KCR-led BRS (Bharat Rashtra Smaithi) party on Friday.

Several other ex-MLAs also joined the BRS in the presence of Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao.

Giridhar on Wednesday resigned from the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), alleging that he faced ‘humiliation’ in the saffron party.

Gridhar was accompanied by his son Sishir Gamang, who also quit the saffron party alleging that his father was not given adequate importance in the state unit of the BJP.

Gamang who had met Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on January 13, will likely be leading the BRS party in Odisha in the 2024 elections as its state president.

“I can tolerate insult, but not humiliation. Moreover, I was overlooked in the party,” Gamang told reporters on Wednesday, adding that he was quitting the party with a heavy heart.

The veteran tribal leader, however, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their support.

Gamang was elected to Lok Sabha from the Koraput Lok Sabha seat from 1972 to 1998 and again in 2004.

He could not contest the 1999 polls as he was the Odisha chief minister then. His wife Hema Gamang had won the seat that year.

Giridhar had earlier quit the Congress party and joined the BJP in 2015.

In the resignation letter to BJP national president J P Nadda, Gamang said: “As you are aware, I joined the BJP voluntarily, at my free will, without any pre-condition in 2015. I am thankful to Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister and Shri Amit Shah, Home Minister, the then President of the Party for clarifying on the floor of the Parliament on my Voting in 1999.”

“However, I realised that I am unable to discharge my political, social and moral duty to my people in Odisha during the last several years. Hence, I tender my resignation from the primary membership of the BJP with immediate effect. Please accept the same,” the letter read.

Reacting to the development, BJP state president Samir Mohanty said, “He (Gamang) is a respected politician. He was never humiliated in the party. He was a member of the state executive as well as the highest core committee of the party. He had extensively campaigned for four days in Padampur bypoll. However, he is free to choose any party of his choice.” Senior BJP leader Dilip Mohanty said Gamang’s resignation will not affect the party’s electoral prospects

Telangana: Former MLA Gurunath Reddy joins congress

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Former MLA and BRS leader R Gurunath Reddy and two senior leaders joined the Congress party.

According to a press release from the Congress, Kodangal Municipal Chairman Jagadishwar Reddy, and MPP Muddappa are the two senior leaders.

Gurunath Reddy has served as MLA seven times and is the undisputed leader in Kodangal. He played a key role in the victory of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi MLA in the last election.

The members had a meeting with Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Revanth Reddy, where they discussed his padayatra.

Revanth Reddy began his walk from Madanapalli village of Bomraspet Mandal in Vikarabad district after the formal launch of the ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo Abhiyan’ by the Congress on Thursday.

After offering his prayers at Hanuman’s temple in the village Bomraspet which comes under his native constituency Kodangal, Revanth started his march.

Revanth interacted with farmers working in the groundnut field pausing the yatra on his way from Madanapalli to Dudyala.

He enquired about the challenges they face and their opinions on the input costs and the price being offered in the market.

“Congress leaders and workers will tour the villages for 60 days, taking the message of party MP Rahul Gandhi to every doorstep in the state”, said Revanth.

The chief further added, “Freedom is facing an existential threat and democracy is heading towards a dangerous path. It feels like the rule of the Nizams and Britishers. Both the state and the Centre are spreading a poisonous culture by treating Telangana and the entire country as laboratory for their immoral politics.”

“We need to save the Constitution by exposing the failures of the Centre and the state government in the past nine years,” urged Revanth.

Revanth while talking with reporters at the Gandhi Bhavan on Thursday, opined that BJP MLA Eatala Rajender was a victim who fell into the ‘venomous’ trap laid by chief minister KCR, claiming that he is being used by the KCR.

Revanth Reddy was accompanied by the chairman, AICC Pawan Khera as he walked along the public.

  • Florida joins 19 states to challenge Biden’s new immigration program

Florida joins 19 states to challenge Biden’s new immigration program

    [ad_1]

    migrants florida 09263

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody called the new Biden program “a reckless attempt to continue flooding the country with massive waves of illegal immigrants.”

Florida is already home to sizable populations of people who have left all four countries covered by the White House actions. In recent weeks, hundreds of migrants fleeing Cuba and Haiti have made the dangerous 100-mile journey by boat to the Florida Keys, straining resources and moving Gov. Ron DeSantis to activate the state National Guard to respond to the influx.

A White House representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Biden announced the program amid a continued surge of migrants crossing the southern border, many of them coming in from countries that are ruled by authoritarian regimes such as Cuba and Venezuela.

Both Republicans and Democrats have been critical over how the Biden administration has handled border issues, but some of the strongest criticism has come from GOP leaders in Florida and Texas. DeSantis last fall arranged to fly nearly 50 mostly Venezuelan migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, an effort that itself has drawn legal challenges in Florida and Massachusetts. Abbott has also bused thousands of migrants from the southern border to Democratic-led cities like Washington, D.C. and NYC.

Under the new program, the United States said it would grant “humanitarian” parole to eligible migrants who apply from their home countries. Those who have an eligible sponsor and pass background checks are allowed to come to the United States for two years and receive work authorization. The program was an expansion of one created for Venezuelans last year.

But Biden and federal officials stressed that those who wanted to apply for the program would not be eligible if they tried to cross the border.

When Biden announced the parole program, he called on Republicans to support comprehensive immigration changes. He said that changes outlined earlier this month “won’t fix our entire immigration system but they can help us a good deal in better managing what is a difficult challenge. … Until Congress passes the funds, a comprehensive immigration plan to fix the system completely, my administration is going to work to make things at the border better using the tools that we have.”

Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-Miami) has put together a comprehensive immigration package but it’s not clear if the proposal will gain much traction in Congress.

Both Florida and Texas have launched several lawsuits challenging Biden administration immigration policies.

  • Urmila Matondkar Joins Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra In Jammu

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Actor-politician Urmila Matondkar on Tuesday joined the Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir. Rahul Gandhi is leading the foot march, which is now in its last phase.

“When stars join, the journey becomes brighter,” the grand old party tweeted in Hindi.

Ever since the party’s march started in September, many prominent faces – outside of the Congress – have been a part of the grand old party’s foot march. Actors, including Pooja Bhatt, former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, veteran army officers have walked alongside Rahul Gandhi. In Delhi, Kamal Haasan joined the foot march last month.

Urmila Matondar also posted a video on social media that showed her walking with Gandhi. “Walk for Unity, Affinity, Equality and Fraternity (sic),” she tweeted.

Before the march, she posted a video message, where she can be heard saying: “In this winter chill, I am addressing you from Jammu. In a short while from now, I will be joining the Yatra. Indian unity is the spirit that has been carried along during this Yatra. All of us have created this India and we have to help it grow. For me, this Yatra is more for the society than politics. The world is functional with love, not hate,” she can be heard saying in the clip.

Throughout the Kanyakumari to Kashmir Yatra, Rahul Gandhi has been saying that his party aims to counter the hatred spread by the ruling party in an attack on the BJP and the RSS. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, however, on Sunday had said that “India is not broken that it needs Congress to unite it”.

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi met Kashmiri Pandits and also raised the issue of statehood during one of the addresses.

PDP delegation joins Rahul Gandhi in BJY in Jammu; highlights public issues

    [ad_1]

Jammu: A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegation on Monday joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra here and discussed various issues including the government’s eviction drive as well as demands of Kashmiri Pandit employees with him, a party leader said.

The PDP delegation, comprising several senior leaders, joined the foot march at Kunjwani bypass, shortly after the marchers led by Gandhi entered Jammu from adjoining Samba district in the afternoon, the leader said.

PDP’s provincial president, youth wing, Pervez Waffa and additional general secretary Rajinder Manhas walked alongside Gandhi towards Satwari chowk for 15 minutes and briefed him about various issues concerning the common people, he said.

He said they informed Gandhi about the eviction drive launched by the J-K administration to “snatch” the land from the people despite the fact that they are holding the property for generations.

The delegation also informed the Congress leader about the Prime Minister package Kashmiri pandit employees and Dogra employees who have been on strike in Jammu for the past over six months, seeking their relocation outside Kashmir following targeted killings.

Growing unemployment in J-K, inflation and economic distress also came up for discussion during the interaction, the PDP said leader.
