Samajwadi Party’s mayoral candidate Archana Verma joins BJP

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party’s mayoral candidate from Shahjahanpur, Archana Verma on Sunday joined the BJP in the presence of senior party leaders, including Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.

Welcoming Verma into the party fold, Pathak said, “The Samajwadi Party (SP) had declared Archana Verma as its mayoral candidate from Shahjahanpur in the upcoming urban local bodies elections. However, she was finding it difficult to associate herself with the party (SP).

“She was pained by the atrocities committed on women during the SP regime. When the SP declared her as its (mayoral) candidate, she decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the call of nationalism given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that those who want to work in a dedicated manner for Mother India, and establish a stronger rule of law in UP, should join the saffron party,” he said.

Pathak said Verma’s father-in-law Ram Murti Singh Verma was a four-time MLA (thrice from Jalalabad assembly constituency of Shahjahanpur, and once from Dadraul constituency). He was also a one-time MP of Shahjahanpur (1996), the minister said.

Shahjahanpur will vote in the second phase on May 11. Counting of votes will take place on May 13.

State ministers Suresh Khanna and J P S Rathore were also present at the press conference.

Meanwhile, media co-incharge of the UP BJP, Abhay Singh said senior party leaders will flag off the party’s ‘vikas rath yatra’ on Monday from different cities of the state as part of campaigning for the ongoing urban local body election.

Voting for the urban local body polls is scheduled for May 4 and 11. Counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Election would be held for 17 seats of mayor, 1,420 seats of corporator, 199 seats of nagar palika parishad chairperson, 5,327 of nagar palika parishad member, 544 of nagar panchayat chairperson and 7,178 seats of nagar panchayat member.

The politically crucial northern state sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha.

‘Forcefully thrown out..’: Ex-Karnataka CM Jagadish Shettar joins Congress

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Senior BJP leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Monday joined the Congress ahead of the May 10 Assembly elections in the state.

He joined the party in the presence of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, General Secretaries K C Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala (Karnataka in-charge), KPCC president D K Shivakumar and Legislature Party leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, among others.

Shettar on Sunday had resigned as the Hubli-Dharwad (Central) MLA after the BJP denied him the ticket to contest the Assembly polls.

    MS Education Academy

The 67-year old six-time MLA, Shettar was asked by the BJP top brass to make way for others, but he on his part had asserted he wanted to contest one last time.

After joining the Congress, Shettar alleged that he had been humiliated by the BJP by denying him a ticket and that party is today in the control of “very few people.”

“I was forcefully thrown out of the party that I built…I’m joining the Congress by accepting its ideology and principles,” he told reporters.

On his arrival in Bengaluru from Hubballi on Sunday night, Shettar had held discussions with Congress leaders Surjewala, Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah, former minister and campaign committee chief M B Patil and veteran party leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa (Shettar’s relative).

This decision of Shettar, a prominent Lingayat leader from north Karnataka, may adversely impact the BJP’s prospects in a number of segments in the region, according to political observers.

Shettar, a veteran BJP leader whose family has been associated with the party since Jana Sangh days, is an influential leader from its bastion of Kittur Karnataka region. While in the BJP he had served as a Minister, Speaker, Leader of the Opposition and the chief minister.

Hungary joins Poland in banning grain from Ukraine to protect local farmers

    [ad_1]

Budapest: Hungary has joined Poland in banning the import of grain and other food products from Ukraine, in an effort to protect its domestic farming industry, according to official sources.

The ban, which was announced by the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture late Saturday night, is temporary and will last until June 30. Ukrainian grain exports have been forced to take alternate routes through the European Union (EU) since Russia blocked access to the Black Sea, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Minister of Agriculture Istvan Nagy took to Facebook to announce the ban, saying that the Hungarian government is committed to representing the interests of its farming community.

The ministry’s statement said that in the absence of meaningful EU measures, Hungary is temporarily prohibiting the importation of grain, oilseeds, and several other agricultural products from Ukraine, similar to Poland.

Poland announced its own temporary ban on several Ukrainian foodstuffs on Saturday, following protests by Polish farmers.

The Hungarian ministry explained that the continuation of the current domestic market processes would cause serious damage to Hungarian agriculture, so “extraordinary measures must be put in place to hinder them.”

The statement also cited cheap production practices not allowed in the EU, as well as duty-free and free trade opportunities, which have allowed large quantities of Ukrainian poultry, eggs, and honey to enter the European market, making it difficult for domestic and Central European farmers to compete.

  • Denied BJP ticket, former deputy CM Savadi joins Congress in poll-bound Karnataka

Denied BJP ticket, former deputy CM Savadi joins Congress in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi, who announced his decision to resign from the primary membership of the BJP after being denied a ticket to contest in the May 10 Assembly elections, on Friday joined the Congress.

Savadi would now be the grand old party’s candidate in Athani in Belagavi district, Congress leaders said.

His decision came after a meeting with Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah and Congress general secretary and party in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala.

    MS Education Academy

“Our meeting with Savadi took place in a cordial manner. We are aware of his dignity and position. He has agreed to become a member of our (Congress) family of his own volition. He is coming with us after accepting the party’s ideology and leadership,” Shivakumar, who was flanked by Savadi and Siddaramaiah, told reporters.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said he was “saddened” by Savadi’s decision to part ways with the BJP and join the Congress.

“…I’m feeling very sad, we shared a close bond. Sometimes such political situations arise,” Bommai said. “He might have found his political future in Congress. We will do our job in our party.” .

Savadi, who resigned as an MLC on Friday, said he had been loyal to the BJP and helped the party candidates win in other parts of the state as well, but it did not live up to its promise of fielding him in the 2023 Assembly election from Athani.

On his decision to join the Congress, Savadi, a three-time MLA from Athani, said he had only demanded a ticket to contest the elections, besides completion of some irrigation projects in his constituency that are pending, in the event of the Congress coming to power..

Ignoring Savadi’s request, the BJP had earlier this week given the Athani ticket to sitting MLA Mahesh Kumathalli. Savadi had lost the 2018 elections to Kumathalli, who was then with the Congress.

Kumathalli was among the group of defectors who helped the BJP bring down the Congress-JD(S) coalition government and form its own government under the leadership of B S Yediyurappa in 2019.

Kumathalli later joined the BJP and successfully contested the Athani by-election on the party ticket.

Attacking the BJP, Savadi said he had not demanded the deputy chief minister’s post from the ruling party in 2019 but they had given it to him and thereafter removed him from the position without informing him, which he perceived as an insult.

“After losing the election (in 2018), I was made an MLC and then the deputy chief minister. But later they removed me. Why did they make me a minister and then remove me,” he asked.

Replying to a question, he said the BJP should answer why he was denied a ticket to contest in the May 10 Assembly elections.

Ex-AP CM Kiran Kumar Reddy joins BJP, slams Congress leadership

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former Congress leader and last chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh N Kiran Kumar Reddy joined the BJP on Friday, lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi and slamming the leadership of the opposition party.

Reddy joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and hit out at the Congress leadership for its inability to accept people’s verdicts and make course corrections.

“They believe they are correct and all others, including the people of India, are wrong,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

They want authority to control but don’t want to work hard or take any responsibility, said the four-time former MLA, who had quit the Congress last month.

Citing his family’s over six-decade-long association with the Congress, Reddy said he never imagined he will leave the party.

The Congress is getting damaged in all states and its high command does not interact with others or take their opinion, he said.

Reddy contrasted the rise of the BJP with the decline of the Congress since 1984 and lauded the ruling party’s leaders led by Modi for their hardwork and commitment towards the nation.

They have clarity of thought and consistency, and taking courageous decision is the hallmark of the government, he said.

Reddy also lauded Modi’s commitment to fighting corruption.

  • Karnataka BJP MLA Gopalakrishna joins Congress ahead of Assembly polls

Karnataka BJP MLA Gopalakrishna joins Congress ahead of Assembly polls

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Several BJP and JD(S) leaders joining the Congress ahead of the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka is an evidence to prove that public sentiment is in favour of the party and it will come to power, its state unit President D K Shvakumar said on Monday.

He was speaking after inducting Kudligi BJP MLA N Y Gopalakrishna, who had resigned as legislator on Friday, into the party, at KPCC office here.

With the possibility of Gopalakrishna being fielded as a candidate from Molakalmuru constituency, a group of Congress workers picketed outside the KPCC office, demanding the ticket to party leader Yogesh Babu.

    MS Education Academy

“Several BJP and JD(S) leaders are knocking our door, this is evidence to show that the voice of the people of the state is in favour of the Congress and that our march is on a right track, towards power,” Shivakumar said.

Speaking to reporters here, he noted Gopalakrishna resigned as BJP MLA and joined the Congress; similarly JD(S) MLA K M Shivalinge Gowda too has resigned and will be joining the party soon.

BJP and JD(S) legislators joining the Congress voluntarily is a “big evidence” that people have decided for a change, after the “failure of the double engine government”, the KPCC chief further said.

“There is a big list of people wanting to join the Congress…the party has not assured tickets to anyone. We will screen every name, only if we are able to accommodate them we will consider,” he said, adding that there are also some like Gopalakrishna, who are willing to join the party unconditionally to work for it.

Shivakumar’s clarification that those joining the party are not being assured tickets, is seen as a message to protesting party workers, and those disgruntled with such inductions.

Workers are against the party’s possible plans to give Molakalmuru ticket to Gopalakrishna, a “turncoat”, instead of Babu, who was the Congress candidate from the constituency in the 2018 polls.

Gopalakrishna, a six-time MLA, was earlier with the Congress and had got elected from Molakalmuru Assembly segment in Chitradurga district four times, and once from Ballari, before joining the BJP and winning from Kudligi.

After denial of the Congress ticket in 2018, he had joined the BJP ahead of the elections. The saffron party gave him a ticket from Kudligi in Vijayanagara district instead of Molakalmuru, as senior leader Sriramulu was fielded from there. He had won from there.

Recalling his and his family’s long association with the Congress, Gopalakrishna after joining said he will work for the party’s victory in Ballari, Chitradurga and Vijayanagara districts.

He said he will work towards installing a Congress government once again in the state, and it is left for the party leadership to field him from the Molakalmuru Assembly segment.

Recently, two MLCs from BJP — Puttanna and Baburao Chinchansur — had quit from their Legislative Council membership to join the Congress.

JD(S) MLA S R Srinivas (Gubbi Srinivas alias Vasu) too joined the Congress, after resigning as MLA on March 27.
