  • Doha: No breakthrough in sight as India joins UN to resolve Afghan issue

Doha: No breakthrough in sight as India joins UN to resolve Afghan issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India participated in a two-day closed-door conference on Afghanistan with 20 other countries led by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the Afghan crisis. The UN was spurred by the deteriorating situation in the landlocked nation to organise the meeting along with the US, Russia, China and other nations.

The UN said that the aim of the meet was to “reinvigorate international engagement around key issues, such as human rights, in particular women’s and girls’ rights, inclusive governance, countering terrorism and drug trafficking. The meeting is intended to achieve a common understanding within the international community on how to engage with the Taliban on these issues”.

The Doha meeting, however, came under criticism from both – the Taliban and also Afghan women for not inviting them both for the discussions.

    MS Education Academy

Suhail Shaheen, the spokesperson for the Taliban said that any meeting without the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) was discriminatory and unjustified as the Taliban government was the main party.

However, it emerged from Doha that Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, who has been banned from travel, will be visiting Pakistani capital Islamabad to hold talks with Pakistani and Chinese foreign ministry officials.

Women’s groups have held protests in Doha, for what they claimed were efforts by the UN to legitimise the Taliban regime despite the throttling of women’s rights in the country. The Taliban, contrary to assurances, after storming back to power in 2021 began steadily curtailing the rights of girls and women to education, stepping out of homes, visiting a doctor, marriage and divorce as well as working for UN agencies. The last one, which was imposed recently, galvanised women’s groups across the world against the Taliban rule.

Afghanistan’s Khaama news agency quoted Swiss ambassador to the UN, Pascale Baeriswyl, as saying that the situation in Afghanistan under the Taliban administration has turned into a complicated dilemma. “We do not have a magic solution to the Afghan crisis”, Baeriswyl said, adding that she is hopeful that the Doha meeting would lead to solutions to managing the Afghan crisis. Switzerland is currently the president of the UN Security Council (UNSC).

The people of Afghanistan continue to face hardships due to the unending conflict, droughts and economic problems, though the Taliban has $7 billion worth of sophisticated US weaponry which the American troops left behind in 2021 after 20 years of the war against terror.

    election 2024 nevada senate 90176

Former Nevada Republican state lawmaker Jim Marchant announced Tuesday he is entering the race for U.S. Senate, looking to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in 2024.

Marchant, who has led a group of Donald Trump supporters who claim the 2020 election was stolen from the former president, was endorsed by Trump in his failed secretary of state bid in Nevada last year. He also lost his bid for a House seat in 2020 to Democrat Steven Horsford and sued unsuccessfully to overturn that result.

He is the founder of the America First Secretary of State Coalition, a group that advocates for more restrictive ballot access laws in their states. Marchant himself has been a proponent of counting ballots by hand, a process that some election officials have said is less accurate and more costly than a machine count.

  • Adele joins James Corden for emotional Carpool Karaoke finale

Adele joins James Corden for emotional Carpool Karaoke finale

    [ad_1]

Adele broke down in tears while discussing her divorce as she joined James Corden for the final Carpool Karaoke in his last week as host of the The Late Late Show on the US network CBS.

Corden took over The Late Late Show in 2015, replacing the Scottish-American comedian Craig Ferguson. He announced last year that he would be leaving the show and returning to the UK, with Corden’s last episode airing on Thursday.

The Carpool Karaoke part of the show quickly became its breakout hit, and Corden’s first segment with Adele became a viral hit, amassing more than 260m views.

In the final Carpool Karaoke episode, released on Monday, the singer became visibly emotional over Corden’s decision to return to the UK.

“It’s been a crazy eight years,” said Corden. “In one sense it feels like it’s gone like that [clicks fingers] and in another I feel like I don’t remember what life was like before being here.”

Adele said: “I’ve never lived in LA without you guys so I’m a bit nervous about it, to be honest with you, and very, very sad.”

During their conversation, Corden revealed some of the difficulties he had faced in persuading celebrities to take part in Carpool Karaoke when he first came to the US.

He recalled how the team eventually managed to persuade Mariah Carey to agree, but that before she got in the car she told him she would only “do the chat” and would not sing.

Corden knew he had to convince her to change her mind to make a success of the feature, and he succeeded.

“There’s been some bloody brilliant ones, and a few [bleeped out] ones,” Adele laughed, asking Corden to name a favourite.

“Stevie Wonder changed it a lot,” he replied, “because when he did it, other artists were like, ‘Well, if Stevie Wonder’s done it, I’ll do it.’”

Adele revealed how Corden and his family had been “so integral in looking after” her and her son following her split from her former husband, Simon Konecki, in 2019.

The couple divorced in March 2021, and Adele revealed that she and her son Angelo, 10, had gone on a family trip with Corden, his wife, Julia Carey, and their three children.

“And we were on our way home and my mood had changed,” Adele said. “It was like the first year that I felt like I had to hold myself accountable, for just being an adult, whereas the year before that where I left Simon, you and Jules and the kids were so integral in looking after me and Angelo.”

“You were like an adult with me. You and Julia would always give me this advice.”

Adele’s Carpool Karaoke segment will also be broadcast on Thursday’s show, bookending a series that has also featured Elton John, Madonna, BTS, Blackpink, Britney Spears, Paul McCartney, Céline Dion, and Billie Eilish.

  • Jaishankar joins Guyana’s President Ali at commissioning of India-made ferry

Jaishankar joins Guyana’s President Ali at commissioning of India-made ferry

    [ad_1]

Georgetown: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar joined President of Guyana Irfaan Ali at the commissioning of an India-made ferry which would enhance connectivity and provide mobility and economic opportunities in the country’s distant hinterlands.

The ferry is truly a testimony of the close friendship between our two countries, Jaishankar said at the launch ceremony.

“MV Ma Lisha means friendship. The ferry made by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata is its practical expression. This ferry would significantly enhance connectivity within Guyana. It will provide mobility and economic opportunities for distant hinterlands,” Jaishankar tweeted.

    MS Education Academy

The vessel serves the dual purpose of being a passenger and a cargo ferry in Guyana. It can carry almost 300 passengers, 14 cars, two trucks, 14 containers and other assorted cargo.

He said it was important to look at the ferry and consider the larger context, which is that of the long-standing development partnership between India and Guyana.

“Our cooperation is human-centric, it reflects the priorities of the people and the Government of Guyana. Over the years our two countries have collaborated in several areas of interest, which directly impact the lives of the people,” Jaishankar said.

Some of the notable projects in Guyana include a cricket stadium in Georgetown, a Centre for Excellence in IT, modernisation of sugar plants and installation of solar traffic lights, he said.

“I want to underline today, that we remain committed to continuing to support Guyana’s developmental goals and to work with this country, on projects of its interest and priorities,” the minister said.

Cooperation in human resource development has also been an important feature of the bilateral ties. So far, 640 Guyanese nationals have benefited from India’s Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programmes, which are designed to enhance skills and capacity building, he said.

“It would be India’s privilege to partner Guyana on our premier training institutions, universities and learning institutions. We would also be happy to work with Guyana to build a modern ecosystem of institutes for training and capacity building, to meet its growing requirements,” he said.

Jaishankar noted that the visits of both President Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo in quick succession to India have infused new energy in the bilateral relationship.

He also said that the arrival of the ferry and his own visit are milestones in ties and an indication that the two countries were moving to the next phase of their bilateral cooperation.

Jaishankar is on a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, his first visit as the external affairs minister to these Latin American countries and the Caribbean
