  • Over 4,000 youths cheated on pretext of ‘gigolo’, escort jobs, two arrested

Over 4,000 youths cheated on pretext of ‘gigolo’, escort jobs, two arrested

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: With the arrest of two men, the Delhi Police on Wednesday said they had busted a racket that duped over 4,000 youths of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of providing ‘Gigolo’ and ‘Escort’ jobs.

The accused have been identified as Kuldeep Singh Charan, 29, and Shyam Lal, 33, both residents of village Dantra near Jaipur.

Police said that Shyam Lal is fluent in both Hindi and English languages and also mimicking the voice of women after posing as NRI woman client to lure the victims.

The officials said that both the accused have been working on online cyber crime fraud of playboy services, escort services, gigolo and dating services since last four years.

“The web developer who developed the website used in the commission of tje crime has been served notice under Section 41.1 (A) Cr.P.C. and his role in the case is being examined,” said the officials.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police, Outer North, Devesh Kumar Mahla, a grievance was reported on Cyber Crime Reporting Portal from a resident of Gautam Colony, Narela.

In the complaint, the man stated that he was searching for an online job on Google when he came across a website “SP Playboy services.com” and contacted the given number mentioned in the website.

“In the name of providing a job, the accused demanded the initial registration fee amounting to Rs 2,499 and subsequently issued an identity card to the complainant on Whatsapp. Thereafter the alleged started demanding amounts in the name of advance commission of 40 per cent, massage kit, pass code charges and hotel booking. In this process the alleged defrauded complainant to the tune of Rs 39,190. After a preliminary enquiry, a case was registered and investigation taken up,” said the DCP.

During investigation, police after getting server space details, call detail and money trail, nabbed Charan from Jaipur.

“Police recovered the mobile phone and number used in commission of the crime from the possession of the accused. The same mobile number was also mentioned on the website,” said the DCP.

Further during the scanning of the money trail, the police team found that the cheated amount was settled in the co-accused bank account registered in the name of Shyam Lal.

“The mobile number given to the complainant in the name of NRI client was stated to be in the possession of Shyam Lal and he was also arrested,” said the DCP.

As per police investigation so far, both the accused were online defrauding the people in the name of playboy services, gigolo services and escort services since 2017 and defrauded more than 4,000 people.

“They have used more than a dozen bank accounts for receiving the fraud amount,” said the official, adding that further probe is on.

Technology sector cuts most jobs in January in US: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Led by the technology sector, US-based employers announced 102,943 cuts in January, a massive 136 per cent increase from the 43,651 cuts announced in December, a new report has said.

It is 440 per cent higher than the 19,064 cuts announced in the same month in 2022, according to a report by global outplacement and business and executive coaching firm, Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

The technology sector announced the most cuts with 41,829, 41 per cent of all cuts, announced in January. From Amazon to Meta, from Alphabet to Google, almost every big tech company laid off employees in thousands.

It is 158 per cent higher than the 16,193 cuts announced in December 2022 and 57,996 per cent higher than the 72 tracked in January 2022.

Since November 2022, which saw the highest monthly total for the sector since Challenger began tracking in 1993 with 52,771, technology companies have announced 110,793 job cuts. January’s total is the second-highest for the sector on record, the findings showed.

“We’re now on the other side of the hiring frenzy of the pandemic years,” said Andrew Challenger, labor expert and Senior Vice President of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

“Companies are preparing for an economic slowdown, cutting workers and slowing hiring,” he added.

The media industry announced 754 cuts in January, the highest monthly total since 1,001 cuts were announced in June 2021.

Of those, 360 were in digital, print, and broadcast news organisations.

In January, US employers announced plans to hire 32,764 workers, primarily in entertainment/leisure. This is down 58 per cent from the 77,630 announced in January 2022 and down 37 per cent from the 51,693 new jobs employers announced in December of last year, said the report.

Andhra youth migrating to other states for jobs: Lokesh

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Youth from Andhra Pradesh are migrating to various parts of the country in search of employment opportunities as there are no jobs in the state, TDP national General Secretary Nara Lokesh said on Sunday.

As part of his ongoing padayatra ‘Yuva Galam’, Lokesh, the son of TDP chief and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, had a meeting with the local youth at Kanipakam in Puthalapattu Assembly segment in Chittoor district.

The youth informed Lokesh that they are migrating to other states in search of some employment and wanted him to initiate immediate steps for establishing companies in the state soon after coming back to power, thus saving the lives of the youth. “The state government should not threaten the companies and only then the investors will set up their units in the state,” a youth said.

The youth from Rayalaseema lost employment opportunities as the Amara Raja Batteries shifted its unit to Telangana. They told the TDP leader that they pursued their studies by raising loans and now there is no employment.

Lokesh assured the youth that all the companies that shifted their units from the state will be invited back once the TDP is again into the government and the youth will be provided employment opportunities.

Responding to the complaint that the RTC fares are revised following which there is a lot of financial burden on them, Lokesh promised to withdraw once the TDP is back in the government.

The TDP national General Secretary also demanded that the age limit be extended for government jobs since the employment notifications are issued very late.

“Why is the job calendar not released on January 1 as promised,” Lokesh asked and said that over 2.30 lakh posts have been lying vacant for the past four years.

“Chief Minister Mr Jagan (Mohan Reddy) who had said that he would make Delhi tremble if the voters from the State give him 25 MPs, is now getting shivers on seeing Delhi,” Lokesh said in a sarcastic manner.

  • Close to 1 lakh tech employees lost jobs in Jan alone globally

Close to 1 lakh tech employees lost jobs in Jan alone globally

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In what could be touted as the worst month ever for tech workers, close to 1 lakh of them lost jobs in the month of January globally, dominated by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others.

It means that more than 3,300 tech employees lost jobs daily on an average by more than 288 companies worldwide.

Barring Apple, every other Big Tech firm has slashed jobs, led by Amazon with 18,000 job cuts, followed by Google with 12,000 and Microsoft 10,000 job cuts in January.

Salesforce (7,000), IBM (3,900) and SAP (3,000) were other tech companies that announced layoffs last month.

In 2022, over 1,000 companies laid off 154,336 workers, as per the data by layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi.

So in total, more than 2.5 lakh tech employees have lost jobs in 2022 and now.

As more and more Big Tech companies continue to sack employees, they listed various reasons behind the move — over-hiring, uncertain global macroeconomic conditions, strong tailwinds from the Covid-19 pandemic and more.

After laying off 11,000 employees, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg now wants 2023 to be the “year of efficiency”.

Joining the mass layoff season, online marketplace OLX Group slashed 15 per cent of its workforce, or more than 1,500 employees, globally including in India as part of restructuring amid the global meltdown and recession fears.

Edtech major BYJU’s has laid off further 15 per cent of its employees from its engineering teams.

According to sources, the company in a fresh round of layoffs asked more than 1,000 workers (or 15 per cent) to go, mostly from its engineering teams.

  • Biden on robust jobs numbers: The ‘critics and cynics are wrong’

Biden on robust jobs numbers: The ‘critics and cynics are wrong’

    [ad_1]

    biden 05788

The president’s last-minute remarks were added to his schedule Friday morning after the Labor Department announced the U.S. economy created a whopping 517,000 jobs in January, a shockingly high number that underscores a growing and resilient labor market. The unemployment rate fell to 3.4 percent, the lowest level since 1969.

Biden cheered the report as evidence the economy has bounced back after the pandemic — and that economics’ predictions of an incoming recession are overblown. The data also arms the White House with another line of defense against Republicans’ attacks over the Biden administration’s spending policies.

And the timing doesn’t hurt either, with the president set to deliver his State of the Union address before Congress next week. “But today, today I’m happy to report that the state of the union and the state of the economy is strong.”

The president’s public remarks were more giddy than West Wing reactions behind closed doors, as officials had hoped for a less-robust figure. Inflation continues to plague the economy, and Friday’s numbers mean Fed Chair Jerome Powell will have to blunt growth in order to curb prices. Powell is concerned that a hot jobs market will drive high wages, further fueling inflation.

But asked whether he should take blame for inflation rates, Biden was definitive: “No, because it was already there when I got here.” He noted that when he took office, “jobs were hemorrhaging, the inflation was rising, and we were not manufacturing a damn thing here, and we were in real difficulty.”

In December, inflation continued to steadily trickle down to 6.5 percent, falling from the Consumer Price Index’s June peak at 9.1 percent. Powell is working to get inflation down to the central bank’s target range of 2 percent, and the Fed raised interest rates by a quarter of a percent on Wednesday — the eighth straight increase.

He warned on Wednesday that more rate hikes were coming, noting that “the job is not fully done.”

Ben White contributed to this report.

  • Jobs blowout: What the employment report means for Biden and Powell

Jobs blowout: What the employment report means for Biden and Powell

    [ad_1]

President Joe Biden and the White House can celebrate the report as evidence the economy is continuing to hum along, and it will blunt attacks from Republicans over the administration’s spending policies. But senior officials in the West Wing were privately hoping for a less-robust number. So was Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

Here’s how the number is likely to play with four key political and economic figures.

Biden — The White House can view the report as evidence that economists’ predictions of an imminent recession are off-base. But inflation is Biden’s biggest enemy on the economy, and the report will cause some unease within the administration, given that it could mean the Fed will crack down harder on growth to curb prices.

Still, the report clashes with the expectations of many economists and Wall Street CEOs that the U.S. will fall into a recession this year.

Biden often describes the recent slowdown in job growth that preceded Friday’s number as a good thing as the economy transitions from the rapid Covid-19 comeback to a period of what he calls more “steady and stable growth.

Senior White House aides have said they are happy with declining numbers — as long as they stay positive — making it easier on the Fed to end the rate increases as soon as possible. They believe the decline in inflation is already well underway, with consumer price growth slowing for six straight months.

Biden wanted a good jobs number. But maybe not this good.

Powell — The report is likely to come as a jolt to the Fed chair. Powell said in a recent speech that the economy only needs to gain about 100,000 net jobs a month to keep up with the number of new people entering the workforce.

He’s strongly committed to bringing inflation to the central bank’s target range of 2 percent. Since the Consumer Price Index peaked last June at 9.1 percent, inflation has steadily fallen, hitting a still-high 6.5 percent in December.

Powell and the Fed on Wednesday again raised rates by a quarter of a percent, the eighth straight increase. But it was the smallest bump since March. He cautioned at his press conference that more hikes lay ahead, saying “the job is not fully done.”

Any single report can be an outlier and is unlikely to sway the Fed. But Powell is worried about the hot jobs market driving up wages, fueling inflation. So any news showing the market heating rather than cooling could be unwelcome.

“My base case is that the economy can return to 2 percent inflation without a really significant downturn or a really big increase in unemployment,” Powell said Wednesday. “I think that’s a possible outcome. I think many, many forecasters would say it’s not the most likely outcome, but I would say there’s a chance of it.”

In one positive sign for Powell, wages rose 0.3 percent in January, down from 0.4 percent in December. What the Fed chair fears most is a “wage-price spiral” in which higher wages drive prices and create a dangerous inflation cycle. That is not evident in this report.

Economist Larry Summers — The former Treasury secretary under former President Bill Clinton has long been saying that more Fed rate hikes will be needed to rein in the labor market. This report could offer more fodder for that argument.

Summers was among the few who predicted fairly early that inflation would soar and stay high for a long period of time. At the time of his initial call last February, the Fed, the White House and other Democrats were still assuring Americans that the inflation spike would be “transitory.” It wasn’t.

Summers has also repeatedly irritated the White House by suggesting that the trillions in new spending approved by Democrats in Congress and signed into law by Biden over the last two years played a role in the inflation spike.

He also maintained for months that the Fed’s rate-hiking campaign, while necessary, would almost certainly lead to significant recession and a near doubling in the unemployment rate. He has more recently softened his tone and been more receptive to the idea that a soft landing is even possible.

“I’m still cautious, but with a little bit more hope than I had before,” Summers said last month. “Soft landings are the triumph of hope over experience, but sometimes hope does triumph over experience.” This number is likely to get Summers to tilt back toward experience.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy — The stunning jobs report will undercut the argument by McCarthy and other Republicans that Biden’s economy is fading fast under the weight of inflation, which they say is driven by big spending bills.

Still, the more aggressive the Fed feels it has to be in killing inflation, the higher the risk that the central bank will push the economy into recession. A slumping economy would give the Republicans ammunition to use against Biden and the Democrats in the 2024 campaign.
