  • UAE’s job loss insurance scheme: 2 more categories added

UAE’s job loss insurance scheme: 2 more categories added

    [ad_1]

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has added two new classes of employees who can participate in the UAE’s job loss scheme.

The MoHRE’s Involuntary Loss of Employment (ILoE) scheme allows employees who work in free zones and semi-government entities to sign up as well.

The Ministry mandated the purchase of job loss insurance for private sector and federal government employees on January 1.

    MS Education Academy

Employees with a base salary of less than 16,000 dirhams are required to pay a premium of 5 dirhams per month, or 60 dirhams per year, along with VAT under the ILoE insurance plan.

They will be remunerated with 60% of the typical fundamental compensation for the employment cutback for three back-to-back months. While representatives with a fundamental compensation of over 16,000 dirhams are expected to pay 10 dirhams per month or 120 dirhams yearly premiums under this plan.

One or two years are available for the policy period. Dubai Insurance, the ILOE website, Al Ansari Exchange, and ATMs all offer subscription options.

The number of supporters surpassed 1,000,000 since its send-off in January the service said toward the beginning of April.

A notice posted on the ILoE website showed that individuals working in semi-government substances or organizations enlisted in a UAE free zone buy-in by continuing to the “Non-Enrolled in MoHRE” connect on the ILoE entryway.

Dr Abdulrahman Al Awar, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation approached employees that are qualified to buy into the plan to profit from inclusion, and on employers to encourage their employees to subscribe to the scheme.

  • Ignore Microsoft’s whines about the Activision Blizzard takeover. The CMA did its job | Nils Pratley

Ignore Microsoft’s whines about the Activision Blizzard takeover. The CMA did its job | Nils Pratley

    [ad_1]

The silliest line in Microsoft president Brad Smith’s whine about the UK was his claim that the Competition and Markets Authority is “not only unelected but unaccountable”. That is an absurdly over-the-top reaction to a regulatory thumbs-down in the UK, on entirely coherent grounds, for Microsoft’s planned $68.7bn (£55bn) takeover of the video games firm Activision Blizzard.

What does Smith want? A national poll to choose the directors of the independent body responsible for competition and consumer protection? In practice, one suspects, Smith would expect to see something like the UK’s current system.

The chair of the CMA, its chief executive and the rest of the board are appointed by the business secretary of the elected government. Grant Shapps, holder of the post at the time, appointed Sarah Cardell as CMA chief executive last December.

As for accountability, Smith must know that CMA decisions can be appealed. Microsoft is free to take its argument to the Competition Appeals Tribunal, a separate body. And, if it doesn’t like what the CAT decides, it can trot along to the court of appeal for another go.

This setup is different from the one that operates in Smith’s and Microsoft’s home patch of the US, but not wildly so. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has to sue to block a deal (which, note, it is now doing in the Activision case). Ultimately, though, the process can end up in court in both countries.

That is why, one trusts, Rishi Sunak will ignore Smith’s invitation to “look hard at the role of the CMA and regulatory structure in the UK” if he wants the tech industry to flourish here.

Microsoft can yank investment from the UK if it wishes, but another part of the global tech industry may be encouraged by the rare sight of a regulator being willing to step into the path of US Big Tech’s steamroller.

Smith hardly helped his case when he tried to paint the UK as a place where it’s hard for a successful tech founder to sell a business. The record shows that the number of deals blocked by the CMA – across all sectors – is tiny in most years.

Indeed, the more common complaint is that the regulator is too willing to accept an acquirer’s proposed remedies to competition concerns. Microsoft tried the remedy route with Activision but the CMA, unusually, wasn’t convinced. Tough.

And, whatever Smith thinks, the EU is not some regulatory paradise for big companies in which every big deal goes through on the nod. Deals sometimes get stopped by Brussels too.

Those who regard Activision hits Call of Duty, Candy Crush and so on as recreational fluff may view the stakes here as low, but nobody should doubt the CMA’s right to inspect the Microsoft deal.

One US company was trying to buy another US company, but the relevant measure is the size of UK revenue. Activision generates about £700m of its global £6bn turnover in the UK, so 10 times the CMA’s £70m cutoff. This was not a marginal case.

On the substance of Smith’s grumble – that Microsoft’s remedies for the cloud part of the gaming market were sufficient – opinion obviously differs, but the CMA hasn’t lost its marbles.

In essence, the takeover would wed a big content company (Activision) to a big next-generation platform provider (Microsoft). The proposal was never going to be a slam-dunk, which is why the FTC and the European Commission are also all over it.

All contractual remedies – especially time-limited ones as offered by Microsoft – must be policed. So, if the CMA had said yes, the regulator would be permanently diving into a cloud market that is still in its infancy.

It is surely a reasonable pro-competition and pro-innovation view of the world to believe, first, that the market should be left to develop freely if cloud-based delivery is the coming force; and, second, that Microsoft is big enough already if it has an estimated 60%-70% of cloud gaming services.

For Smith and Microsoft, it is apparently “the darkest day in our four decades in Britain”. The remark merely advertises Big Tech’s sense of entitlement. Go to appeal, or take the decision on the chin. Either way, get a sense of proportion.

  • Heard the one about the standup lawyer? Why even top artists now need a side job

Heard the one about the standup lawyer? Why even top artists now need a side job

    [ad_1]

German band Trigger Cut should have been touring the UK this month, but they never reached the country. The musicians were turned away by border guards, apparently because they have day jobs. While it might be unthinkable to the Home Office, for many artists the notion of a second job is no surprise.

“I know very few musicians who only are musicians,” says Glaswegian guitarist Kevin Cahill. “Almost everyone has a second job and it’s mainly teaching. The ones who don’t are either really rich or really poor.” Cahill knew he wanted to be a musician when, as a teenager, he first heard the White Stripes’ album Elephant. Now, he’s a classically trained guitarist and one half of ambient duo Cahill//Costello, who have just recorded their second album.

This, live performance and working as a session musician are where his passion lies, but he’s also a music teacher. “I love teaching, but it pays for me to do all these other things,” he says. “It’s a balancing act.”

It’s a similar story for Kit Fan, who works as full-time governance manager at Hull York Medical School. He’s also a poet, novelist and recipient of two Northern writers’ awards for his first novel Diamond Hill and latest poetry collection The Ink Cloud Reader. “Most writers I know have a second job,” he says. “A lot of poets in particular have second jobs in academia.”

Fan completed a poetry related PhD in York, but his writing career “wasn’t planned”. He says: “I was much more keen to have a full-time job, I feel I need economic stability. I was born in Hong Kong and brought up in what you would describe as a working-class family. The idea that I would just work as a writer didn’t occur to me.”

He now writes on weekends and evenings, rejecting “self-blame” if he can’t write as much as hoped: “The frustration of finding time to write is much more productive than the frustration of having too much time and not being able to write.”

Standup comedian Sikisa Bostwick-Barnes has appeared on Live at the Apollo and performs several times per week, but says: “It’s common for people to have a second job in comedy, especially when they’re starting out, unless you’re lucky enough financially to just enjoy your dreams.” She’s in high demand on the comedy circuit – but four days per week, she’s an immigration lawyer. Working in legal aid, the salary is “decent” but not high, and she also helps support family members. “There’s a backstory people don’t see,” she says.

Second jobs are “a very important aspect of creative work,” says Orian Brook, from the University of Edinburgh, co-author of Culture Is Bad for You – a book investigating inequality in creative industries – with Dave O’Brien and Mark Taylor. Now they, with researcher Giuliana Giuliani, are studying second jobs in the arts.

From 2015–21, people with a main creative job such as actors, musicians and artists were more than twice as likely to have a second job than people in other occupations. The numbers could even be higher, says Brook, as full-time freelancers weren’t counted.

Cahill, Fan and Bostwick-Barnes are all successful in their fields – why do they need second jobs? “The vast majority of writers don’t earn a lot of money,” says Fan. “I certainly cannot sustain any viable economic life from my writing alone. It’s a question of survival.” The ALCS reported last year that median earnings for authors have fallen to £7,000 per year. Only 19% of the authors said they write full-time.

    Kit Fan.

Surveying around 100 people in the public arts sector, Artist Leaks found a median hourly wage of £2.60 – far below the £10.42 National Living Wage. Meanwhile, the Live Comedy Association found 60% of people working in the industry earn less than the median UK wage.

“Comedy, especially when you’re starting out, doesn’t pay,” says Bostwick-Barnes. Comedians fork out for travel, accommodation and publicity materials, plus fees for freelance work are often late. “I need a reliable, sustainable income to feel safe.”

The Culture Is Bad for You researchers discovered “an expectation that everybody works for low pay, and everybody has to do a bit of unpaid work,” says O’Brien, with people receiving low hourly pay or working many hours for small fixed sums. In performing arts and music, he says this appears to have worsened since the pandemic.

While wealthier creatives can take the hit, furthering their careers with loss-making Edinburgh shows, funding films and exhibitions or doing unpaid internships, their poorer contemporaries struggle.

This is something charity Arts Emergency, which helps young people from underrepresented backgrounds access arts careers through mentoring, contends with. “We constantly equivocate over the ethics of helping people into these industries because we know that although it’s societally important, individually it can be a massive struggle,” says Neil Griffiths, who co-founded the organisation with comedian Josie Long.

The charity’s network of creative professionals explains the reality of precarious work, long hours and low pay to mentees. “It’s unsustainable as a standalone career unless you have some other source of wealth,” says Griffiths. “We call it the ‘glass floor’. Some of the best people drop out because they can no longer justify it. It is absolutely a disadvantage if you can’t dedicate your full time and energy to your practice and must struggle to survive.”

The issue of pay has long been absent from conversations in the arts, Griffiths says: “We can’t complain that there are no artists of colour, journalism is super elite and everyone’s privately educated, then not talk about money.”

If we don’t look at who’s working second jobs, it can paint false pictures about talent, says O’Brien. If there are two actors, one with time to prepare for and attend auditions, and another who’s working, who’s more likely to land a role? “It’s not only about how good you are at the job, or if you work hard enough you’ll succeed,” Brook adds.

While studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Cahill felt part-time working – something he had to do – was discouraged. One route to success for classical musicians is competitions, but “most people who do these practise all day, every day and don’t have a job.”

The necessity for Bostwick-Barnes to work as a lawyer “put me back a couple of years”. She took her debut show to the Edinburgh festival fringe last year, after seven years doing standup: “I debuted later than I probably should have, because I didn’t have the time and energy to really trust my comedy.” While she thinks there’s now less stigma around second jobs, it can limit opportunities: “I remember being like, ‘I would love to do this TV job but I’ve run out of annual leave.’”

Turned away for having day jobs … German band Trigger Cut.

Yet all three find positives in their day jobs. After experiencing a lack of support to pursue music when he was younger, Cahill is determined to show his students it’s a real prospect. “When I was wanting to do it, it was like, ‘Get a real job. Get a trade, son’,” he says. “Teaching kids how to play an instrument is such a humbling thing because you’re constantly reminding yourself why you love it. If you can show the importance of your art through teaching, that’s the way to change things.”

For Bostwick-Barnes, being an immigration lawyer is consuming, but important: “My day job is something I’m passionate about because it does help people. The work is full-on, I’m always worried about my clients.”

Fan feels his two careers are symbiotic. Writing makes him a better manager; managing offers “insight into other people’s lives”. He says: “There’s an economic reason, but also an artistic reason – I want to be in touch with the world.”

This is echoed by Griffiths. “Without romanticising it, if you don’t have much friction economically or socially, maybe your work is less relevant to people. If you’re living real life, your work has more vitality, it’s more socially and politically important. It’s not a reason to make people struggle, but it’s one of the advantages.”

Bostwick-Barnes has comedy ambitions that require more free time, but that will have a financial cost. “I sacrifice a lot to do something that makes me happy. I enjoy what I do, but I know I can’t sustain this. I wish there was two of me!”

Fan is happy with his current situation: “I’m part of the life of work, of people’s challenges, messiness, gossip, and all of these things help me write.”

Cahill decided during the pandemic to spend more time playing and recording, and hopes to do so for years to come, but says: “I think I would always teach. I’ve always seen being a musician as a lifelong work.”

Artists will continue needing second jobs until the culture of low-paid, unstable work is addressed. With the cost-of-living crisis, it’s more pressing than ever, Griffiths says: “If you want a world-leading creative sector, you’ve got to pay artists to survive – start making it somewhere people can thrive.”

  • ‘Joe and I look forward to finishing the job,’ says VP Harris

‘Joe and I look forward to finishing the job,’ says VP Harris

    [ad_1]

Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday urged Americans to come together to fight for democracy, continue to make progress, and make sure all Americans can get ahead and thrive, minutes after President Joe Biden announced his 2024 reelection bid and named her as his running mate.

“This is a pivotal moment in our history,” said Harris, who is the first woman and the first Indian American and first African American to be the vice president of the US.

President Biden on Tuesday formally announced his 2024 reelection bid with Harris as his running mate.

    MS Education Academy

“For two years we have made transformational investments to build a nation in which everyone can be safe and healthy, find a good job, and retire with dignity. In response, extremists have intensified attacks on basic, foundational freedoms and rights,” Harris said in a statement soon after Biden in a video message announced his 2024 presidential bid.

“For example, they want to take away a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. They attack the sacred right to vote and attempt to silence the voice of the people. And they try to block common sense reforms to save lives and keep Americans safe from gun violence,” the 58-year-old democrat said.

“The Republicans running for President want to take our country backwards. We will not let that happen. Just like we did in 2020, we must come together to fight for our democracy, continue to make progress, and make sure all Americans can get ahead and thrive,” she said.

“Joe and I look forward to finishing the job, winning this battle for the soul of the nation, and serving the American people for four more years in the White House,” Harris said.

Meanwhile, eminent Indian-American Ajay Jain Bhutoria said that President Biden and Vice President Harris have demonstrated that they are committed to building a more equitable and prosperous America.

California-based Bhutoria said their leadership has been instrumental in helping millions of Americans during the pandemic, and their vision for the future is inspiring.

In a statement, Bhutoria also highlighted the importance of unity and a broad-based coalition to secure a victory in 2024. He called upon his fellow community leaders and grassroots organisers to rally behind the Biden-Harris campaign and build a diverse coalition that reflects the values of all Americans.

“We need leadership that is committed to bringing people together and creating a more just and prosperous future for all Americans,” said Bhutoria, who has been a long-time supporter of Biden and a major fundraiser for his campaign.

“President Biden and Vice President Harris have the experience, vision, and values that are needed to continue to move our country forward, and I am proud to support their re-election campaign,” he said.

Praising the Biden-Harris administration for its bold leadership, Bhutoria said this has resulted in significant accomplishments, such as the passage of the American Rescue Plan and the historic infrastructure package.

  • How Germany Job Seeker Visa paves way to settlement in Europe

How Germany Job Seeker Visa paves way to settlement in Europe

    [ad_1]

Germany is offering a job seeker visa that allows individuals to search for jobs in the country, and if they find a suitable job, they can convert their visa into a work visa.

The Germany job seeker visa not only offers a pathway to employment in Germany but also to settlement in Europe.

    Germany Job Seeker Visa

The Germany job seeker visa is granted to individuals who have at least five years of work experience, a degree recognized in Germany, proof of funds to support their stay in the country and other necessary documents.

    MS Education Academy

For Indian citizens, the fee for the job seeker visa is 75 Euros. If granted, the applicant can stay in Germany for up to six months to search for a job. During their stay on a job seeker visa, they are prohibited from working.

The application process for a job seeker visa in Germany involves submitting an application, proof of accommodation, funds, academic qualifications, experience, and health insurance, a valid passport, a resume, and a cover letter.

From Germany Job Seeker Visa to Work Visa or EU Blue Card

After finding jobs in Germany, applicants can apply for either a work visa or an EU Blue Card.

To obtain a work visa, the applicant must receive a job offer from an employer in Germany. If the applicant’s age is beyond 45 years, the annual salary of the job must be at least 48180 Euros, or they must provide proof of adequate old-age pension provisions.

Once granted, work visa holders can stay in Germany for up to four years or the duration of the work contract, whichever is shorter.

In the case of an EU Blue Card, the applicants must not only get jobs in Germany but also ensure that the gross annual salary is at least 58400 Euros. However, in case of employees in the fields of mathematics, IT, natural sciences, engineering, and human medicine, the annual salary must be at least 45552 euros.

While on an EU Blue Card, applicants can bring their family to Germany

    Settlement in Germany

After 33 months of getting an EU Blue Card, the applicants can apply for a settlement permit. In some cases, it will be issued after 21 months of stay in Germany.

In the case of a job visa, the applicants can apply for a settlement permit if they have been a holder of a residence permit for at least four years and pass the ‘Life in Germany’ test.

A Permanent EU Residence Permit is granted to persons who have legally lived in Germany for at least five years and have sufficient command of the German language and basic knowledge of the legal and social system and way of life in Germany.

    Germany Citizenship

It is granted to settlement permit holders who have been living in Germany legally for at least eight years. Apart from it, persons with a limited residence permit that can be converted to indefinite residence who have been living in Germany legally for at least eight years are also eligible for Germany citizenship.

Apart from the residency requirements, they must have sufficient knowledge of the German language.

The applicants must give up their previous nationality after they are naturalized.
