‘Why some of us decry our democracy’, Dhankhar’s jibe at Rahul

Dibrugarh: Criticising Congress leader Rahul Gandhi without mentioning his name, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday wondered “why some of us decry our democracy within and outside the country”, while describing India as “the mother of democracy and the world’s most vibrant democracy”.

The Vice President said this during his speech while attending the convocation of the Dibrugarh University located on the outskirts of this upper Assam town.

Dhankar’s jibe was apparently aimed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had said in a Cambridge University lecture that India’s democracy is under threat.

Calling Parliament “the temple of our democracy”, the Vice President emphasised that it is a platform where issues of public interest are debated, deliberated, discussed and decided, but prolonged disruptions, he added, undermine the esteem and confidence which people repose in their representative institutions.

Therefore, he called for generating an ecosystem so that “the parliamentarians respond positively to the spirit and essence of the founders of our Constitution”.

He underlined that freedom of expression has not been subjected to any enforced silence in India.

Dhankhar also said that education is the most effective and transformative mechanism to bring about equity, equality and progress in society.

“Nothing can change societal conditions more than people getting educated,” he commented.

The Vice President urged the students to be “agents of change” and work to bring about positive changes in society.

“You are the makers and the warriors of Bharat in 2047 when the nation will celebrate the centenary of its Independence,” he told them.

Dhankar said: “Have a dream, but do not be just a dreamer, be a doer.”

Terming the eight northeastern states the “Ashta Laxmis” of India, the Vice President said without their growth and contribution, India’s growth would remain incomplete.

He also commended Dibrugarh University for its work towards preserving the linguistic diversity and literary traditions of the region.

“Preserving our languages is very important as they have evolved over thousands of years,” he said.

The Vice President praised NCERT and the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) for highlighting the contribution of unsung heroes of the northeast “in our history and freedom struggle”.

Dhankhar also said that the northeast is emerging as the land of opportunities.

Mentioning various projects such as Bogibeel rain-cum-road bridge, 375 road projects, the rise in the airports and the setting up of 190 new educational institutions in the northeastern region, he highlighted that new avenues and vistas are now available to youth to unleash their energy.

The Vice President expressed confidence that by the end of the decade, India will be the world’s third largest economy.

The Vice President conferred D.Sc. and D.Litt degrees (Honoris Causa) to eminent personalities of Assam. He also planted a sapling tree on the university campus.

Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, Union Minister Rameswar Teli and other dignitaries were present.

Ambedkar said reservation cant be given on religious basis: Himanta’s jibe at Congress

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Lashing out at the Congress in poll-bound Karnataka, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that reservation cannot be on the basis of religion but the grand old party still wants to give a reservation to Muslims.

“Babasaheb Ambedkar had said that reservation cannot be given on the basis of religion. This is the basis of our constitution…Today Congress is saying that we will give reservations to the Muslims,” said Sarma in Bengaluru.

Hitting out at Congress for its poll promise to ban the Bajrang Dal in Karnataka, and said that its manifesto “looks like that of Popular Front of India” while alleging that the party is saying so to “appease Muslims”.

“PFI is already banned. Siddaramaiah government withdrew cases against PFI during their tenure. So they (Congress) are saying to ban PFI and Bajrang Dal to appease Muslims. Congress’ manifesto looks like the manifesto of PFI and some fundamentalist Muslim organizations,” Sarma said while speaking to the media.

This comes after the Congress party on Tuesday in its manifesto for the upcoming May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections said it will take “decisive action” as per law including banning organisations like Bajrang Dal, the Popular Front of India and others.

Biswa said that the Implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will ensure gender justice and equal rights for Muslim women in the southern state. Notably, the BJP has promised to implement UCC in Karnataka if the party returns to power.

“Karnataka BJP made a very bold commitment and it will usher a nationwide demand for the implementation of UCC across the country,” Biswa said, adding that nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) is the need of the hour.

The BJP has intensified its final leg of campaigning with top BJP guns holding massive rallies and roadshows in the southern state, the only state in the south belt where the saffron party is holding on to power.
The ruling BJP released its manifesto for the Karnataka elections on Monday.

The Congress party on Tuesday in its manifesto for the upcoming May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections said it will take “decisive action” as per law including banning organisations like Bajrang Dal, the Popular Front of India and others.

“We will take decisive action as per law including imposing a ban on any such organisations, read the Congress manifesto released by the party president Mallikarjun Kharge here.

Karnataka will go to Assembly polls on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13.

BJP MLA defends ‘Visha Kanye’ jibe at Sonia in PM Modi’s presence

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Karnataka’s Vijayapura constituency Basanagouda Patil Yatnal on Saturday defended his ‘Visha Kanye’ (poisonous woman) jibe at former Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing a huge gathering in Vijayapura, Yatnal, who spoke ahead of PM Modi, also mentioned Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose as the “first prime minister of the country”.

“Our Sanatan Dharm, our mother and our Bharat Mata are everything to us. We will not tolerate and can give our lives if anyone dares to talk against Bharat Mata. Along with this, if anyone speaks foul about our world leader Narendra Modi, we Indians would not tolerate that,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing the opposition leaders, he said: “If you try to wag your dirty tongue, we will answer in the same pitch. Under the leadership of PM Modi, India has become a ‘Vishwa Guru’. He is a replica of our first Prime Minister Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and treading on the path of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri,” he said.

PM Modi, addressing the gathering, said the Congress is indulging in breaking of society, and that the party should never be pardoned.

“Jagajyothi Basaveshwar fought for equality. But, Congress leaders are indulging in divisive acts. Quoting Rastra Kavi Kuvempu (revered by the Vokkaliga community as their iconic figure, he maintained that Kuvempu described Karnataka as a garden of all sects of people and underlined that the communities in society must have mutual respect for each other.

“On May 10, you will vote to make Karnataka the number one state in the country. On May 10 you will vote to bring a double engine government to power,” PM Modi stated.

“I am a servant of Karnataka and want to do everything for the state. For me, Karnataka is an important state. I need your blessings. The new team has been made ready to play an important role in Amrit Kaal. It is a mixture of new spirit and old roots. The strong team is ready. This team also needs your support,” PM Modi said.

He further said that the coalition government would only be bothered about its survival.

“Political instability has cost the state a lot. Whoever works for the poor, Dalit, backwards and Adivasis, Congress will start hating them. They had used words like ‘desh drohi’, ‘kathputli’ and all the words in the dictionary against B.R. Ambedkar. The party was the same in the old days, and it remains the same even today,” PM Modi added.

Tired, defeated: Modi’s jibe at Congress leader Siddaramaiah in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Vijayapura: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a swipe at former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah saying that the Congress leader was seeking votes in the name of his retirement from active politics.

He said the people of Karnataka will not choose a “tired and defeated” Congress but a BJP teeming with enthusiasm.

“A Congress leader is seeking votes in the name of their retirement. His biggest poll plank is: ‘This is my last election. Give me a chance. What a pathetic state they have reached!” Modi said in an election rally in the district headquarters town of Vijayapura.

    MS Education Academy

The Prime Minister’s jibe was aimed at 75-year-old Siddaramaiah who recently announced that this will be his last election and he would not contest polls anymore.

“I know that the people of Karnataka will not choose a tired and defeated Congress but the BJP which is bubbling with enthusiasm,” Modi added.

He said there is one slogan of ‘Ee Baariya Nirdhara, Bahumatada BJPiya Sarkara’ (This time the decision, a BJP government with the majority) echoing from every corner of Karnataka.

In an attempt to strike a chord and connect with the dominant Lingayat community of Karnataka who are followers of 12th-century social reformer Basaveshwara who was born in Vijayapura, Modi said his party follows the teachings of the poet-saint in toto.

The Prime Minister said the 2023 Assembly election in Karnataka, which will take place on May 10, is about building the state in the next 25 years.

“The BJP has a definite roadmap for the development of Karnataka. Congress has neither the roadmap nor any enthusiasm,” Modi told the crowd.

The ruling BJP is pulling out all stops to return to power in this year’s state election. The party is facing a tough challenge from the opposition Congress.

Voting will take place on May 10 and the counting of votes is on May 13.

Telangana: ‘Won’t say Modi is a broker for Adani’, KTR’s jibe at BJP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: IT minister KT Rama Rao on Monday said that he will not call Prime Minister Narendra Modi a broker even though the entire country was saying this. He was responding to BJPs comments on chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao being called a ‘broker’.

Speaking at the Atmiya Sammelanam Sabha in Rajanna Sircilla district, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader said, “I can call Prime Minister a broker for Adani.” His comment was followed by huge claps from the public.

KTR waited for the accolades to stop. “But I won’t,” he said after a pause leading to more cheers.

“I can use words like broker, loafer, and luccha. We have the guts to say things that will remind you of your father,” he said followed by a roaring cheer.

He was reacting to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bandi Sanjay’s broker comments on chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao in the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) paper leak issue.

“He (Bandi Sanjay) wrote that TSPSC is the work of KTR. He called the chief minister a broker. Do they think I can’t say that their Prime Minister is a broker to Adani? I can but I won’t because I have cultural values,” said KTR.

Referring to the MLA poaching case, the IT minister said, “BJP’s general secretary B L Santhosh sent fake swamijis to negotiate to buy four BRS MLA. Should we call him a broker and a dalal?”

Maha: Privileges Committee set up after Raut’s thieves jibe meets for first time

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The newly-constituted 28-member Privileges Committee of the Maharashtra Assembly met for the first time on Friday under the chairmanship of Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Rahul Kul.

The committee was set up by Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar on Wednesday under Kul amid uproar over Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut allegedly calling the Vidhimandal (state legislature) “chor-mandal” (council of thieves).

However, Raut’s issue did not figure in the meeting, senior Congress MLA and committee member Nitin Raut told PTI.

“The issue is not on the agenda of the committee as of now. Speaker Rahul Narvekar will announce on March 8 if the notice will be sent to the committee. The next meeting of the privileges committee will be on March 9,” he said.

  • Modi uses ‘keechad-kamal’ jibe, says he alone outweighs opposition

Modi uses ‘keechad-kamal’ jibe, says he alone outweighs opposition

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a fresh broadside against the opposition on Thursday, saying their “keechad” (dirt) of allegations will only help the lotus bloom more and asserting he alone outweighs all who had to take turns to shout slogans to oppose him.

Thumping his chest, Modi declared that he lives for the country and wants to do something for the country, which has rattled the opposition parties and they are playing political games just to save themselves.

“Desh dekh raha hai, ek akela kitno ko bhari padh raha hai (the country is watching how one person has outweighed so many),” he said as the opposition members kept shouting “Modi-Adani, bhai-bhai”.

Unperturbed by the jeering, Modi finished his 90-minute speech in reply to a debate on a motion thanking the President for her address to a joint sitting of Parliament, and listed various achievements of his government.

With members of the treasury benches chanting “Modi-Modi”, he pointed at the opposition MPs who had gathered in the Well of the House in a bid to shout him down and said, “Naare bolne ke liye bhi unko badal karna padhta hai (they have to take turns even to shout slogans).”

“Ek conviction ke karan chala hoon, desh ke liye jeeta hoon, desh ke liye kuch karne ke liye nikla hoon (I live for the country and have embarked with the conviction to serve the nation),” he said, adding his political opponents are playing games as they do not have the courage to take him on.

The opposition, he said, is resorting to this to save themselves.

Replying to the Congress charge that the BJP was ignoring Jawaharlal Nehru’s efforts in nation building after Independence, Modi retorted that if the first prime minister was so great, why have his scions never used his surname.

As he rose to speak, opposition MPs, some holding placards, rushed into the Well shouting slogans against the prime minister and seeking a joint parliamentary committee probe into allegations levelled by the US short-seller Hindenburg Research against tycoon Gautam Adani.

Hitting back, Modi said, “Jitna keechad uchaloge, kamal utna hee zyada khilega (the more dirt you fling, the bigger the kamal – the election symbol of BJP – will bloom).”

“Keechad unke pass tha, mere pass gulal. Jo jis ke pass tha, usne diya uchal,” Modi quoted Manik Verma’s poem in response to the allegations opposition parties levelled on him and his government.

Roughly translated, it means they had dirt and I had ‘gulal’, whosoever had whatever they flung in the air.

Opposition parties used the debate on the motion to attack the government for Adani group’s phenomenal rise during the last few years.

In his reply, Modi accused the Congress of adopting only “tokenism” in solving problems the country faced and said it was bothered only about its political ambitions and not the welfare of the nation.

“We don’t believe in tokenism. We have chosen the path of hardwork in taking the country forward,” he said, adding technology was being used as an aid in this mission.

He accused the Congress of trampling on the rights of states and regional parties by dismissing elected governments on 90 occasions by “misusing” Article 356 of the Constitution. “Who are the people?” he asked and responded that Indira Gandhi alone had used the article 50 times to dismiss governments.

“This country is not anyone’s fiefdom. Our policies reflect national and regional aspirations,” he said. “But these people who are now sitting (with Congress), I want to expose them today.”

He then narrated how elected governments of the Left in Kerala, NT Rama Rao in Andhra Pradesh, Sharad Pawar in Maharashtra and M G Ramachandran in Tamil Nadu were dismissed by the Congress. And today these parties are sitting along with the Congress, he said.

“NT Rama Rao’s government was dismissed when he was in the US for medical treatment,” he said, adding M G Ramachandran must be turning in his grave seeing his DMK align with the Congress.

He also alleged that the Congress had committed sins in the past and is now trying to mislead the country.

The prime minister warned states against resorting to populist measures for political gains, saying it would be “anarth-niti” (disastrous policy).

With many parties in states promising freebies and reverting to heavy cash outflow schemes like old pension in run-up to elections, he cited examples of near bankruptcy in neighbouring countries to say that they should not play with the financial health and economic policies. “Do not do any such sin which leaves the burden on the next generation.”

Attacking the Congress, he said the party named as many as 600 schemes after the Nehru-Gandhi family.

The Congress, he charged, was against science and technology and it defamed Indian scientists who developed indigenous COVID-19 vaccines.

“They do not leave any chance to defame our scientists,” he said, adding attempts were being made even “till yesterday”.

Modi also accused the previous Congress governments of ignoring the welfare of tribal communities and small and marginal farmers.

While the Congress-led governments believed in “tokenism”, the current regime is trying to find permanent solutions to issues facing the countries, he said.

Modi further said during the Amrit Kaal — the period up to centenary of India’s Independence — his government would aim to provide benefits of all welfare schemes to everyone and achieve 100 per cent saturation levels, and put an end to any scope for appeasement on the basis of caste and religion.

“Saturation of every welfare scheme is true secularism for us….This also eliminates discrimination and corruption,” he asserted.

He listed various achievements of his government – from eliminating waiting period for getting cooking gas to opening bank accounts for everyone and providing electricity connections.

The effort was to create a brighter future and not look at political gains, he said.

“Some people’s behaviour and language are disappointing not just for the House but for the country,” he said in oblique reference to the allegations opposition parties levelled on him.

Later, the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address was adopted with voice vote.

PM Modi without taking names, takes a jibe at Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday took a veiled dig at Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi in his reply to the motion of thanks on the President’s address in Lok Sabha and said some speeches made on Tuesday were lauded by the their ecosystem and “maybe they slept well and couldn’t wake up (on time)”.

Rahul Gandhi, who participated in the debate on Tuesday and largely targeted the government on Adani issue in his speech, was not present in the House when Prime Minister made his initial remarks. He later reached Lok Sabha.

“I was watching yesterday. After the speeches of a few people, some people were happily saying, “Ye hui na baat.” Maybe they slept well & couldn’t wake up (on time). For them it has been said, “Ye keh keh ke hum dil ko behla rahe hain,wo ab chal chuke hain, wo ab aa rahe hain”,” PM Modi said.

“When President’s Address was going on, some people avoided it. A tall leader even insulted the President. They displayed hatred against ST. When such things were said on TV, the sense of hatred deep within came out. Attempt was made to save oneself after writing a letter later” he added.

PM Modi said India became the fifth-largest economy amid difficult times.

“Several countries are suffering from instability due to war. Several others are facing inflation, unemployment, and lack of food security including our neighbours. Amid difficult times, India became the fifth-largest economy,” he said.

Prime Minister said that President Droupadi Murmu’s presence as Head of the Republic is historic as well as inspiring for the daughters and sisters of the country.

“I extend my thanks to the President’s Address. I got the opportunity earlier also. But this time, along with thanks, I also want to greet her. In her visionary address, the President guided us and crores of Indians. Her presence as the Head of the Republic is historic as well as inspiring for the daughters and sisters of the country,” PM Modi said.

“The President has enhanced the pride of the tribal community. Today, after several years of independence, there is a sense of pride in the tribal community and an increase in their self-confidence. This nation and House are grateful to her for this,” he added.
