Coal worth Rs 23 cr discovered during I-T raid in Jharkhand

    [ad_1]

Ranchi: The Income Tax (I-T) Department has unearthed a stock of 22,000 metric tonne of coal during raids conducted at the premises of Agriti Minerals Private Ltd, a Jharkhand-based company involved in the business of mining products.

During investigation, it was revealed that the coal was meant to be supplied to two power plants in the state, but instead was illegally dumped by the company. The coal was stored at the company’s bases at Kuju town in the Ramgarh district.

In the assessment done by the I-T Department, it has been revealed that the value of illegally dumped coal at the company’s premises is Rs 23.75 crore. The department had conducted a survey on March 20-21 at the company’s locations in Ranchi and Kuju.

During the survey, it was found that the company has a huge stock of coal at its premises as compared to the details entered in its stock register. The evaluation of this stock was done by the experts of Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), a Central government company.

Investigation revealed that this coal was to be supplied to Maithon Power Limited and Koderma Thermal Power Limited, but the company dumped it. The plans were to illegally sell the coal at high prices in the market.

The businessman running the company has also accepted the proof of having an undisclosed income of Rs 4.5 crore. He has also agreed to pay a tax of Rs 1.5 crore to the I-T Department.

  • Crushed under police boot’, newborn dies in Jharkhand; CM orders probe

Crushed under police boot’, newborn dies in Jharkhand; CM orders probe

    [ad_1]

Ranchi: A newborn baby died allegedly after being crushed under police boots during a raid in Jharkhand’s Giridih district in the small hours of Wednesday, prompting Chief Minister Hemant Soren to order an investigation.

The alleged incident, which occurred at Koshodinghi village under Deori police station when police personnel went to a house to arrest two persons in connection with a case, led the opposition BJP to demand suspension of senior officials.

“It has been alleged that a four-day-old boy died when the police went there to execute two non-bailable warrants issued by the court. Prima facie, external injuries have not been found on the baby’s body. It has been sent for postmortem examination,” Giridih Superintendent of Police Amit Renu told PTI.

Once the postmortem report comes, the police will be in a position to say what actually happened, the SP said.

He said the autopsy will be conducted by a team of doctors under the supervision of a magistrate with proper videography.

“Right now we don’t have any information that any policeman had crushed the infant. If the allegation is found to be true, the erring personnel will not be spared,” Renu said.

The SP said four to five police personnel had gone to execute non-bailable warrants against Bhushan Pandey, grandfather of the deceased infant, and another person.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren ordered a probe into the incident after a video went viral in which a person, apparently Bhushan Pandey, is seen alleging that police personnel raided their home at 3.20 am and they opened the door using force when it was not opened.

“I fled and the women also rushed out. The policemen started searching the house when the four-day-old child was sleeping there. The baby was crushed and killed,” the person in the video claimed.

Senior BJP leader and former chief minister Babulal Marandi termed the alleged crime ‘heinous’ and demanded immediate filing of FIR in the case besides suspension of senior officials who did not take immediate action.

“Chief Minister Hemant Soren ji, have some shame. Send a team of senior officials from Ranchi. First of all, get the FIR done and send the policemen who killed the newborn to jail… Otherwise, you will also not be saved from the sin of ‘sarkari hatya’ of a four-day infant,” Maranti tweeted.

CPI-ML MLA Vinod Kumar Singh raised the issue in the Jharkhand Assembly demanding a thorough probe into the incident and stringent action against the police if the incident is found to be true.

“This is horrendous. If found true, the guilty should not be spared. The police raid teams should be sensitive towards women and children and exercise caution,” Singh told PTI.

Ruling JMM legislator from Giridih, Sudivya Kumar, said, “We are waiting for the postmortem report. If it is confirmed that the infant died under police boots, stringent action will be taken against the guilty.”

Congress legislator Irfan Ansari said action will follow if the incident is found to be true.

None of the police officials so far could provide details regarding the exact case against the accused for which the raids were conducted.

  • Restriction on Ram Navami procession: BJP MLA asks if Jharkhand is ruled by Taliban

Restriction on Ram Navami procession: BJP MLA asks if Jharkhand is ruled by Taliban

    [ad_1]

Ranchi: The BJP on Tuesday created a ruckus in the Jharkhand Assembly over restrictions imposed on Ram Navami procession and wondered if the state is being ruled by the Taliban.

During the Question Hour, BJP legislator Maish Jaiswal demanded that DJ (large music system) be allowed in Hazaribag’s Ram Navami procession.

An agitated Jaiswal also tore his kurta while making the statement.

Wondering whether people are living in a state ruled by the Taliban, Jaiswal alleged that FIRs were filed against innocent people while five persons are on fast unto death in his constituency Hazaribag demanding that DJ be allowed during the procession.

Jaiswal also alleged that there was a deliberate attempt to destroy the 104-year-old tradition of Ram Navami procession in Hazaribagh.

BJP MLAs chanted slogans such as ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Hanuman’ in the House and created uproarious scenes.

Minister Mithilesh Thakur claimed that those staging dharna seeking to play DJ in Hazaribag are BJP workers.

“There is a directive to comply with the orders of the Supreme Court and the high court regarding the decibel limit. We respect all religions – Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian. We are real devotees of Ram,” he said.

Hundreds of people recently took out a rally in Hazaribag against the administration’s order prohibiting the playing of recorded music and carrying traditional weapons including lathis during Ram Navami processions.

Ram Navami processions in Hazaribag are held for a longer time compared to other parts of the state.

Amid the uproar, Congress MLA Deepika Pandey Singh reached the well of the House claiming she was insulted by the BJP as a saffron party MP has described her as Nagarvadhu’ (bride of the city).

She said: “I am a mother. I am a sister. They (BJP) don’t want Goddesses and Gods. They want a city bride. They are not Hindus, they act in the name of Hindus.”

Meanwhile, the Assembly passed two bills for setting up private universities in the state amid a demand by the BJP for sending the proposed legislation to the Select Committing for proper vetting.

Thakur said setting up two more universities would result in increasing enrolment of students for higher education. There are 16 private universities in Jharkhand.

  • Doctors’ strike hit over one lakh patients in Jharkhand

Doctors’ strike hit over one lakh patients in Jharkhand

    [ad_1]

Ranchi: As per estimates, about one lakh people could not be treated in Jharkhand on Wednesday as around 14,000 government and private doctors went on a strike demanding security.

Although emergency services have been kept operational, OPD and routine treatment came to a standstill in the state on Wednesday. The doctors staged dharnas at the hospitals and medical colleges in support of their demands.

The one-day strike was called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Jharkhand Health Services Association (JHSA) to protest against the recent incidents of assault, abuse and intimidation of doctors in Garhwa, Ranchi, Bokaro, Jamtara, Dhanbad and Lohardaga districts of the state.

The IMA said that it will resort to an indefinite strike if immediate action is not taken on the implementation of the Medical Protection Act and other demands.

More than 2,000 people are treated daily in the OPD of RIMS Ranchi, which is the biggest hospital in the state.

A large number of patients had gathered at the hospital on Wednesday as well, but there were no doctors to treat them.

OPD services at private clinics and hospitals also remained closed and only the pre-admitted indoor patients were attended to.

OPD services were also reported closed in medical colleges located at Hazaribagh, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Palamu and Dumka.

State IMA Secretary Pradeep Singh said that they were forced to take this decision, as the government had not taken any concrete step in implementing the Medical Protection Act despite promising the same.

Singh said that how would the doctors be able to save the patients if they themselves are not safe.

Meanwhile, state Health Minister Banna Gupta said that the law and order situation cannot be questioned because of the incidents of attacks on doctors.

He said that the government is sensitive to the doctors’ demands and the issue will be resolved soon after holding discussions.

  • Amit Shah lays foundation stone of Rs 450-cr nano urea plant in Jharkhand

Amit Shah lays foundation stone of Rs 450-cr nano urea plant in Jharkhand

    [ad_1]

Deoghar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday laid the foundation stone of a Rs 450-crore nano urea plant and township of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) in Jharkhand’s Deoghar.

Shah said it will help in reducing the dependence on import of urea and usher in development of the eastern region, particularly the Santhal Paraganas.

“Nano urea will benefit farmers, and it is already being exported to five countries,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the world’s first nano urea plant in Gujarat last year, according to IFFCO. This will be India’s fifth such plant.

“PM Modi has given priority to all works related to land conservation across the country… Many urea factories were revived by Modi, and this small liquid urea factory built on 30 acres will manufacture about six crore bottles every year, which will make India self-sufficient by reducing imports in this sector,” Shah said.

The facility will prove to be useful in increasing production not only in Jharkhand but also in Bihar, Odisha and Bengal, he said.

Nano urea improves crop productivity, soil health and nutritional quality of the produce, IFFCO said.

The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in December next year, IFFCO Managing Director U S Awasthi said.

Awasthi said the unit will be constructed at a cost of Rs 300 crore and the township will entail an investment of Rs 150 crore.

The Jharkhand Industrial Area Development Authority (JIADA) has allotted 30 acres of land to IFFCO for the complex in Jasidih area in Deoghar district.

Shah said Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (PACS) would now function as Common Service Centres (CSC), and farmers can avail benefits of several services including no-dues certificates and birth and death registration certificates.
