Ranchi: The High Court of Jharkhand on Friday extended the stay on a notice by a local judicial magistrate to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for personal appearance in a case filed against him for allegedly maligning BJP leader Amit Shah.

Gandhi has moved the high court praying for setting aside the criminal proceedings initiated against him by the magisterial court in Ranchi.

The high court on February 3 first put a stay on the notice for appearance of Rahul Gandhi before the court of the magistrate in Ranchi the next day.

He was ordered to appear before the magistrate in a complaint case filed against him by Navin Jha, a BJP member in Ranchi.

Jha in his petition has alleged that Gandhi had maligned BJP leader Amit Shah in a speech he made in Chaibasa before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Jha had filed the complaint on April 24, last year before the court of Ranchi Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate which was dismissed.

Thereafter, Jha filed a revision petition before the court of the Ranchi Judicial Commissioner which was allowed and the matter was remanded back to the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate.

Jharkhand IAS officer grilled by ED for 10 hours in land deals case

    [ad_1]

Ranchi: IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan, who appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Ranchi, was grilled for about 10 hours on Monday in connection with its investigation into alleged illegal land deals, an official said.

Ranjan, a 2011-batch officer of the Jharkhand cadre, reached the ED office around 10.30 am and left at 8.30 pm, he said.

He was briefly questioned by the agency on April 13 as well, when searches were carried out in the case at his premises and those of some others in Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal.

    MS Education Academy

The ED arrested a total of seven people, including a Jharkhand government officer, after the raids.

An assistant registrar of assurances of West Bengal government based in Kolkata has also been asked to depose on May 2, ED sources had said.

The action was taken under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), and the agency is looking at more than a dozen land deals, including one pertaining to defence land, wherein a group, including land mafia, middlemen and bureaucrats, allegedly “connived” in forging deeds and documents from as early as 1932.

Lands of the poor and the downtrodden were “usurped” as part of this fraud, the sources had said.

To launch its investigation under the PMLA, the federal agency took cognisance of a police FIR of forgery of some personal identification documents registered by the civic authorities concerned.

The agency, according to ED sources, has recovered a number of fake seals, land deeds and registry documents during the searches.

This is the second case in which a Jharkhand-cadre IAS officer has come under the scanner of the ED. Last year, it had arrested IAS officer Pooja Singhal in a money laundering case.

Meanwhile, Uday Shankar Singh, the personal private secretary of Abhishek Prasad Pintu, who is the media advisor to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, was also brought for questioning at the ED office on Monday evening.

A printer and some other documents, which were recovered from his home during a search operation on Monday, have been brought to the agency’s office, the sources added.

NCERT’s scrapping of chapter on Mughals, attempt to change history: Jharkhand Cong

    [ad_1]

Ranchi: The decision to drop lessons on Mughal courts from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books is an attempt to change the nation’s history, alleged Avinash Pandey, Congress’s general secretary in-charge for Jharkhand on Monday.

Boards which use NCERT textbooks which include CBSE are expected to be impacted by the decision.

Uttar Pradesh has announced that government schools will adopt the NCERT’s new class 12 history textbooks in which portions about Mughal courts have been removed from this academic session.

    MS Education Academy

As part of its “syllabus rationalisation” exercise last year, the NCERT, citing “overlapping” and “irrelevant” as reasons, dropped certain portions from the syllabus including lessons on Mughal courts from its class 12 textbooks.

Pandey told mediapersons that party senior leader Rahul Gandhi has taken this issue seriously and Congress will oppose the move.

Hitting out at Centre, Pandey said democracy is under threat in the country.

He said the party will launch its Jai Bharat Satyagraha Yatra from Lohardaga tomorrow and will create awareness among masses as to how opposition voices were being shut on raising issues in Parliament.

The Satyagraha Yatra will conclude on April 16, he said.

Hazaribag: Three policemen were injured after being allegedly attacked for stopping loud music during a Ram Navami procession in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district, a senior officer said on Sunday.

The district administration had prohibited ‘DJ music’, typically pre-recorded music with thumping beats, during Ram Navami celebrations, he said.

When the procession reached Veer Kunwar Singh Chowk playing ‘DJ music’ on Saturday, it was stopped by police and asked to turn off the music, Superintendent of Police Manoj Ratan Chothe said.

“When they refused it, a magistrate seized the sound system and the vehicle. Those in the procession attacked the police, in which three policemen were severely injured. Among those injured were sub-inspector Sanjiv Kumar Pandey and constable Vikas Kumar Singh. They were admitted to hospital,” he said.

A case has been registered against the president of the akhara, which organised the procession, and 200 ‘unnamed’ persons at the Korra police station in connection with the incident, he added.

A case has also been lodged against another akhara at the Lohsinghna police station for allegedly hurling stones targetting a place of worship during their procession on Saturday, Chothe said.

The Ram Navami celebrations in Hazaribag had begun around 8 pm on Friday and concluded on Saturday night. Braving heavy rains, 91 akharas took part in the centuries-old celebrations in the town’s Boddom Bazar in Bada Thakur Bari area.
