  • JK’s Sex Ratio At Birth Better Than National Average: NHM Director

    SRINAGAR: The sex ratio at birth in Jammu and Kashmir is better than the national average, while sex determination is being regulated through effective implementation of the PCPNDT Act, NHM Director Ayushi Sudan said on Saturday.

    Talking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Srinagar, she said that the sex ratio in J&K is definitely better than the national average because of social factors.

    “There is still a need for capacity building for the Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (prohibition of sex selection) Act, 1994 and the main aim of the act is to prohibit sex determination, especially at the time of prenatal diagnosis,” Sudan said.

    She added that gender bias and sex determination are critical public health concerns, which are being regulated through effective implementation of the PCPNDT Act, for which a comprehensive action strategy has been devised and monitored. “There is a need for capacity building of our stakeholders so that this act can be handled in a better and more effective way. With better understanding, we are hopeful of further improvement in the future,” she said.

    Sudan also stated that streamlining the PCPNDT Act is only one aspect to improve the sex ratio, but there are several other aspects like women empowerment and different programs that can help in further improvement of the sex ratio at birth in J&K. “With women’s empowerment, there will be further improvement in the future,” she said.

    Notably, as per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the sex ratio at birth for children born (females per 1,000 males) has increased from 923 in 2015-2016 to 976 in 2019-2020. As per the NFHS-5 data, against the national average of 929 girl children born for every 1,000 boys, J&K has 976 girl children born for every 1,000 boys. The urban areas have a slight edge over rural pockets, with 978 girl children born for every 1,000 boys in urban areas, while the rate was 976 in rural areas, she added. (KNO)

  • G20 Summit: Top Students Sought For International Nanotech Conference

    SRINAGAR: The School Education Department has sought details of ten toppers or innovative students from each district for deputation to the International Conference on ‘Nanotechnology for Better Living’ under the G20 programme.

    Director of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has stated that at least ten student toppers or innovators per district, preferably from the 11th and 12th grades, will be deputed for the International Conference on Nanotechnology for Better Living under the G20 programme.

    The conference, the 8th edition of the biennial International Conference on Nanotechnology for Better Living (NBL-23), will be organized by NIT Srinagar in association with prestigious institutions and organizations, including IIT BHU, from May 25-29, which marks the birth anniversary of physicist and inventor Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit.

    The director said that a fusion of biological, chemical, physical, agriculture, and health services is expected to provide a vibrant platform to present and discuss path-breaking research ideas in nanotechnologies and shall be an interface between academia and industries. Additionally, pre-conference tutorials for school children who are supposed to work for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been arranged.

    The director has directed the CEOs of the region to depute ten student toppers or innovators from their respective districts for the scientific event on May 23, which marks the inaugural day. The CEOs have been requested to provide the list of students from their district along with their models or innovations, as per the format, along with details of the escort teacher.

    Dedicated sessions, ‘Seeding Nano-science to Young Minds’ and “Nurturing minds for a better world” shall be conducted during the conclave by leading stalwarts, thus handing over this multidisciplinary science to our young and smart generation. A galaxy of local innovators and entrepreneurs shall also be part of the summit, along with the students. (KNO)

    Fire Damages Residential House In North Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: A residential house in Machil sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district was damaged in a fire incident, according to an official.

    The official stated that the Army responded immediately after receiving an SOS phone call about the fire breaking out in a residential house in Machil village. “Troops of the Army swung into action and a well-coordinated effort by the troops resulted in no loss of life or injuries,” the official said.

    The official also confirmed that due to timely action, drills, and procedures followed by the Fire Fighting Team, no damage was caused to other nearby houses.

    Despite bad weather, the Fire Fighting team of Machil Battalion successfully doused the fire at the house which belonged to Abdul Rahim Wani, son of Abdul Gafoor Wani. As a result, the loss and damage to life and property were restricted. (KNO)

    SRINAGAR: A day-long conference on the scope and concerns of Corporate Governance was organized by Kashmir Angel Network at Islamia College.

    The conference was held in three sessions on perspectives related to Introduction, Technical, and Industry, organized by the Angel network in collaboration with the Islamia College of Science and Commerce.

    Irtif Lone introduced Kashmir Angel Network to the audience and its role in building up an enabling ecosystem for youngsters to undertake startups.

    Speakers highlighted the need for bringing in various elements of corporate governance in all spheres of corporate management and operations.

    It was further brought to notice that the apparent disconnect between Academia and industry needs to be removed to bring efficiency to industry and promote entrepreneurship among the student community.

    Dr Khurshid Ahmed, the principal of the college addressed the audience and spoke about the role of Islamia College.

    Chairman KAN, Shabir Ahmed Handoo presented an introductory overview of the event.
    Masood Hussain, a senior journalist of Kashmir talked about the macro-economic indicators and the prevalent business gaps in the market.

    The technical session was graced by an eminent group of speakers, throwing light on different dimensions of corporate governance. It included Farukh Khan, CA Akeel Fayaz Mattoo, and Zubair Iqbal, former regional head of HDFC Bank.

    The post-lunch session was the Industry session, and the speakers shared their experiences with the audience. Mehmood ur Rashid, Prof Seema Bashir, Irfan Zargar, M Ashraf Mir, Saad Parvez, Mahmood Ahmed Shah.

  • Woman Dies In JK Road Accident

    SRINAGAR: In a tragic incident in Nomain Katra area of Jammu division, a woman lost her life in a road accident.

    According to a police official, a car carrying five passengers including one male, two children, and two females skidded off the road at Bain Nala near Nomain, Katra on the Katra-Jammu road, and plunged several feet down.

    The car bore registration number JK21E 4286. The police reached the spot immediately and rushed the injured to Katra CHC. Unfortunately, one female passenger succumbed to her injuries while the rest were referred to GMC, Jammu.

    The police have taken cognizance of the incident and started an investigation.(KS)

  • Erstwhile SPO Is A Drug Peddler Now, Arrested

    SRINAGAR: A Special Police Officer (SPO) was arrested today in Doda district for his alleged involvement in drug peddling, according to officials.

    The SPO, identified as Javed Ahmed, was dismissed from service and attached with the District Police Lines. Reliable sources had informed the police that he was engaged in illegal narcotics trade, leading to his apprehension with cannabis in his possession.

    A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered against him at Doda Police Station, and an enquiry was initiated against him by the department for service misconduct. The investigation conducted by the department proved beyond doubt that he was involved in the illegal trade of charas, and his services have been disengaged.

    The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abdul Qayoom has appealed to the general public for cooperation in eradicating the menace of drugs from society. He also warned that any employee of the civil or Police Department found engaged in narcotics trade will not be spared.

    DPAP chairman and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad warmly welcomed Ganju, JKNPP spokesperson S Bali and their supporters into the party fold and said their joining would further strengthen the party.

    “The countdown for the G20 meeting has begun. The dates for the scheduled meeting have already been declared,” said Divisional Commissioner Kashmir VK Bidhuri while visiting a painting exhibition in Srinagar.

    The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir added that the ongoing developmental works in Srinagar city and elsewhere will be accomplished in time. “The ongoing developmental works in Srinagar city and elsewhere will be accomplished in time. We should know that the G20 meeting will be very beneficial for the entire J&K,” he said.

    “The meeting of the Tourism Working Group will boost the tourism industry in the region. During the visit, ambassadors of different countries will come to know the beauty of Kashmir which they will communicate to their people after returning back to their respective countries and nations,” Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Bidhuri said.

    Regarding the back-to-back failures of deadlines, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir VK Bidhuri said that due to bad weather, the ongoing developmental works were put on hold. “Initially, the government had fixed April 15 as the deadline for completion of works. We pressed our men and machinery day and night. The work continued uninterruptedly during Ramadan, but the works undergoing in the city were hampered for some time due to inclement weather,” he added.

    He also added that the painting exhibition event will display the beauty of Kashmir. “The beauty of Kashmir has been captured and displayed in the event. It is the best opportunity for artists to showcase their talent,” he added. (KNS)

  • Woman Slips To Death In Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: A woman slipped to death while collecting herbs in a forest area in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Saturday.

    An official said that Zareena Bano (30) had gone to nearby forest area to collect herbs, however, due to heavy rainfall and slippery condition, she lost and balance and died on the spot.

    He said that soon after the incident, local police reached to the spot and recovered her body.

    “After medico-legal formalities her body will be handed over to her family members for last rites,” he said. (KNO)

  • Couple Among Four Killed In Cloudburst, Lightning Incidents In Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: Officials have reported that four people, including a couple, were killed in incidents of cloud burst and lightning strikes at two different locations in the Kashmir Valley on Saturday.

    According to a senior police officer, a cloudburst occurred in the Bujbagh area of Pampore in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district this afternoon, resulting in the deaths of Hilal Ahmed Hanji (25) and his wife, Rozia Jan (25).

    In a separate incident, officials informed GNS that two people died after being struck by lightning in a high-altitude meadow land in the Mujpathri area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district. The deceased have been identified as Taja Begum, wife of Abdus Samad Chopan, and Mohammad Sultan Chopan, son-in-law of Ghulam Mohammad Chopan of Gurwaith Kalan.

    They added that the police have registered cases in connection with both incidents.
