Maha: Too early to talk about alliance with BRS, says AIMIM leader Jaleel

Aurangabad: Amid attempts by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi to expand its footprint in Maharashtra, AIMIM Lok Sabha member Imtiaz Jaleel said they are keeping a close watch on the BRS but it is too early to talk about an alliance with them.

Jaleel was speaking after the BRS, led by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, held its third rally in Maharashtra in Aurangabad on Monday.

“It is too early to say anything about an alliance. One public meeting does not indicate how powerful they are. Let them work and show some results at the ground level. We have to see what response they get in Maharashtra. This question should be asked after a few months,” he said.

Aurangabad renaming: Case against AIMIM MP Jaleel, 1500 others for protest

Aurangabad: A case was registered on Friday against Aurangabad Lok Sabha MP Imtiaz Jaleel and more than 1,500 persons in connection with a protest against the renaming of the Marathwada city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a police official said.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen MP had led a candle march from the collectorate to Jubilee Park here on Thursday night and had addressed the protesters.

The candle march was taken out despite permission being denied to head of the “anti renaming committee” Ayyub Jahagirdar, the official said.

“Jaleel, Jahagirdar and more than 1,500 protesters have been booked for unlawful assembly under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Maharashtra Police Act,” the official informed.

The Maharashtra government last month issued an order to rename Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv after getting permission to do so from the Centre.

AIMIM MP Imtiaz Jaleel seeks referendum on Aurangabad renaming

    [ad_1]

Aurangabad: All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Imtiaz Jaleel has demanded a referendum on the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government’s move to rename Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, as he said that only people can take a decision on the name change and not any leader sitting in Delhi or Mumbai.

The Union government last month approved the renaming of Aurangabad city as ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ and that of Osmanabad city as ‘Dharashiv’. Aurangabad derives its name from Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, while Osmanabad was named for a 20th century ruler of the princely state of Hyderabad.

AIMIM MP Imtiaz Jaleel, who represents the Aurangabad Lok Sabha constituency, on Thursday night led a candle march from the district collector office to Jubilee Park here against the decision to rename the city.

Addressing the participants, Jaleel said, “Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena were in power during 2014-2019. That time they did not rename the city, but when his government was about to go, Uddhav Thackeray remembered that the dream of his late father (Bal Thackeray) has to be fulfilled.”

Renaming Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv was the last cabinet decision of the Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-Congress government that collapsed in June last year following Shinde’s rebellion against Thackeray.

The new government headed by Shinde scrapped the Thackeray-led cabinet decision and took a fresh decision to rename Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. That decision was taken by the two-member cabinet of CM Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis.

Jaleel said, “Only the CM and the Deputy CM took the decision of changing the name of Aurangabad city.”

“No leader sitting in Mumbai, Delhi…no matter how big they are, can decide about renaming any city in the country. The decision should be through a public poll. A referendum should be held on this,” the AIMIM’s Maharashtra unit chief said.

No one will call BRS vote cutters’ in Maharashtra: AIMIM MP Jaleel

    [ad_1]

Aurangabad: Political parties are free to go to any part of the country but AIMIM is called “voter cutter” wherever it goes, said party MP Imtiaz Jaleel, referring to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s plan to enter Maharashtra.

No one will call BRS vote cutters’ in Maharashtra, said Jaleel, the Lok Sabha MP from Aurangabad.

BRS, earlier known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi, is the second political party after the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) that will make a foray into the western state.

BRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao is expected to address a “joiners’ meeting” in Nanded, some 280 kilometres from Mumbai, on Sunday.

Jaleel was speaking to PTI over the event of BRS, which is trying to expand its base beyond Telangana.

BRS will contest all elections in Maharashtra henceforth by “showcasing” the progress Telangana has made under Rao, also known as KCR, a minister of the southern state said on Friday.

“In India, a political party has the right to go to any part of the country. BRS is not only coming here (Maharashtra) but also going to states like Odisha and Karnataka. We are mocked as vote cutters’ wherever we go, but it won’t be the case with BRS,” Jaleel said.

He said AIMIM will hold a national convention of party functionaries in Mumbai on February 25 and 26 to plan its way ahead. “I had a long discussion with party president Asaduddin Owaisi recently,” he added.

Jaleel said, “AIMIM will contest more parliamentary and assembly seats compared to past elections in Maharashtra. “They will be in other areas of the state apart from Marathwada,” he said.

The party had won two seats in Maharashtra in 2019 assembly elections.

He said the Hyderabad-headquartered AIMIM is also in search of an alliance partner keeping an eye on the Dalit votes in the state.

“We are talking to 2-3 parties with whom we can go ahead in elections, but surely not with Anandraj Ambedkar (Republican Sena) today. Not every party is happy with what is going on in the state,” he said.
