‘Tiger Zinda Hai’: Jairam Ramesh on SC granting relief to Khera

    [ad_1]

Raipur: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh thanked the Supreme Court for granting relief to party leader Pawan Khera and said that apex court has shown that “tiger zinda hai”.

Claiming that there are multiple FIRs against Khera in Uttar Pradesh and Assam, Ramesh said that this has also happened with Jignesh Mewani. The Congress party will not be detered by FIRs and will keep raising the issue of Adani, he added.

Multiple FIRs were registered against senior Congress leader Khera after he made “disparaging comments” about Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a press briefing on the Adani-Hindenburg row on February 17.

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed Khera to be released on interim bail. However, the apex court noted that the plea filed by Khera was not for quashing of FIR, but was pressed for “clubbing of FIRs since gravamen of all FIR is same”. The court also ordered the transfer and clubbing of all FIRs registered against Khera.

  • BJP govt can also abolish Article 371A: Cong’s Jairam Ramesh in Nagaland

BJP govt can also abolish Article 371A: Cong’s Jairam Ramesh in Nagaland

    [ad_1]

Kohima: Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday said the signing of the framework agreement for a solution to the Naga Political Issue was an outcome of years of painstaking negotiations led by governments of his party but the details of it are known by no one.

Addressing a press conference here, he appealed to the people of the state to show the door to those who have made hollow promises and talk of “double-engine” government that does not have any tracks.

“On August 3, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the signing of the framework agreement for the resolution of the Naga Issue, and this was welcomed as everybody, and the Congress particularly, wants peace, social harmony and development in Nagaland. But eight years have gone by and we are still waiting for the details of what the agreement was,” said Ramesh.

“Based on the years of political contact made by the Congress (with leaders of Naga groups) since the mid-1990s, finally in 2015, the framework agreement was signed,” he said.

The priority of the successive Congress governments was to bring peace back to Nagaland without which neither the administration nor economic activity would be successful, he said.

Maintaining that the BJP-led government at the Centre abolished Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Ramesh said a government that can do away with Article 370 can also abolish Article 371A, which provides for certain special provisions for Nagaland.

Congress created Nagaland and introduced Article 371A in Constitution to protect, preserve and promote the interest of the people of the state, he said.

“This is a very important election in the history of Nagaland and an opportunity to reject the forces which made false promises in 2018, and an opportunity to put trust and confidence in a party that respects and celebrates India’s many diversities,” Ramesh said.

Development has come to a complete halt in the last five years in the state, while corruption has increased astronomically, he alleged.

Asked about the prospects of the Congress’s 23 candidates contesting the February 27 election to the 60-member assembly, Ramesh said he was hopeful of a government in which the Congress will have a very important role to play.

Congress does not have any members in the present assembly.

  • Adani row: Jairam Ramesh urges RBI, SEBI to probe allegations

Adani row: Jairam Ramesh urges RBI, SEBI to probe allegations

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has written to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and sought an investigation into allegations of financial irregularities and stock manipulation against the Adani Group.

In his letter to Das posted on Twitter on Wednesday, Ramesh urged the RBI to ensure that “excessive debt exposure” by the Adani Group currently and in the future does not destabilise India’s banking system.

“The Adani Group has been described as ‘deeply over-leveraged’ – if the Adani Group has artificially inflated the value of its stock through manipulation by offshore shell companies and raised funds by pledging those overvalued shares, the recent sell off in stock prices is creating vulnerabilities for the Adani Group to find financing, and by implication for India’s banking system,” the Congress MP said in his letter dated February 14.

Ramesh called on the RBI to look into two aspects what is the true Adani Group exposure of the Indian banking system and what are the explicit and implicit guarantees that the Adani Group has been given that it will be bailed out by Indian banks if foreign funding dries up.

“Will the RBI ensure that Indian banks are not forced to step in to substitute for any shortfall in foreign financing, especially given the Adani Group’s political connections,” Ramesh asked.

Public sector financial institutions like the Life Insurance Corporation of India and the State Bank of India have been “unusually generous” to the Adani Group in recent years, the Congress leader alleged.

The RBI must ensure that risks to financial stability are investigated and contained, he said in his letter.

The risks of contagion from any collapse in the Adani Group’s ability to secure financing must be monitored constantly, Ramesh argued.

“As the steward of the financial system, the RBI must do everything possible to protect India’s banks and financial institutions, and we urge you to act in the national interest to ensure that India’s taxpayers do not pay the price for the ‘misgovernance’ and potential ‘illegalities’ of one influential business house,” he wrote to Das.

Ramesh also posted his letter to SEBI chief Buch on Twitter saying, many Indian citizens were disturbed by the allegations that the Adani Group has indulged in “brazen stock manipulation” and “accounting fraud” via a “vast labyrinth of offshore shell entities”.

“Apart from the potential violation of several Indian laws, this goes against everything that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SBI) stands for. We urge you to investigate all potential violations and to ensure complete transparency about who is investing in Adani Group companies,” Ramesh said.

“Given the Adani Group’s size and political connections, it is incumbent that such investigations are seen as fair and complete, with no favour shown to the influential business group,” the Congress general secretary stressed.

Any failure to do so will cast a shadow on Indian corporate governance and on India’s financial regulators, and could affect our ability to raise funds globally, he argued.

In his letter, Ramesh asked why financial institutions of national importance such as the Life Insurance Corporation of India (IIC) and the State Bank of India (SBI) have “heavily bought” Adani Group equity when most private funds have been severely underweight because of concerns over corporate governance and indebtedness.

“LIC, which 30 crore Indians trust with their life savings, has lost thousands of crores in Adani Group stock in recent days. Should we not ensure that such public sector financial institutions are more conservative in their investments than their private sector counterparts and free from pressure from above?” Ramesh said.

The inclusion of Adani Enterprises in the widely used National Stock Exchange Nifty 50 index in September 2022 occurred despite the firm’s weak fundamentals, an excessive price-to-earnings ratio and a tiny free float, he alleged.

He further claimed that adding Adani Enterprises compelled supposedly conservative Nifty index funds to make significant purchases of this risky stock, including the Employees Provident Fund Organisation, India’s largest pension fund.

“In recent days, global stock indices have suspended Adani Group companies while the matter is investigated, but the NSE has failed to take any similar action to protect investors,” Ramesh said.

Is it not SEBI’s responsibility to ensure that index investors are protected from investing in questionable firms, he asked.

“We urge SEBI to play its role as the steward of India’s financial markets on behalf of the crores of Indians who have faith in the fairness of India’s financial markets,” the Congress leader said.

Ramesh shared the letters on Twitter and said that he has expressed the hope that a “full-fledged independent investigation will be carried on the numerous allegations against the ‘PM-blessed’ Adani Group”.

The Congress has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the allegations against the Adani Group by US-based short-seller Hindenburg.

The Adani Group has dismissed the allegations as baseless.

Cong leader Jairam Ramesh takes dig at PM Modi over Adani issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed on Friday that a senior government official has described the recent developments involving the Adani Group as a “storm in a tea cup” and said the cup belongs to none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“A responsible senior official has dismissed the Adani affair as a storm in a tea cup. Well, he accepts it as a storm. As for the tea cup, it is of none other than the PM himself. No ordinary tea cup!” the former Union minister wrote on Twitter.

His remarks came after the opposition stepped up its attack on the BJP-led government over the Adani issue and slammed it for not taking action against the business conglomerate.

US-based short seller Hindenburg Research has accused the Adani Group of stock manipulation and accounting fraud. The conglomerate, led by industrialist Gautam Adani, has denied any wrongdoing and threatened to sue Hindenburg.

The opposition stalled the proceedings in both houses of Parliament for the second straight day on Friday, demanding a discussion on the issue and a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe or a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.

Bharat Jodo Yatra: Congress Won’t Compromise On Rahul Gandhi’s Security, Says Jairam Ramesh

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Congress on Sunday said the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ will follow the directions of the security agencies as the security of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is of topmost concern. The statement comes as Jammu witnessed twin blasts on Saturday that left many civilians injured.

“We are in touch with the security agency. Any suggestions from them will be followed. There can be no compromise when it comes to the security of Rahul Gandhi. His security is of topmost concern for us,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in Kathua.

He said the party’s stand is clear on terrorism. “There should be no compromise in dealing with either the perpetrators or sponsors of terrorism,” Ramesh said.

Several Congress leaders on Sunday said they were concerned about the safety and security of Gandhi after the twin explosions in Jammu “as it raises a question mark on the security arrangements”.

“We accept that the security agencies are fully alert and are doing their job satisfactorily, but claims of the government that terrorism has been finished falls flat in the wake of such incidents,” a Jammu-based Congress leader said.

Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is arriving in Jammu on Monday. Jammu has been put on high alert following twin blasts in the city.

In response to statements made by the BJP where they asked the Congress to clarify its stand on the issue of Article 370, Ramesh said, “Article 370 is a very serious issue. As of now, the bigger issue is restoration of democratic processes in J&K, when elections will be held and Statehood restored. J&K has become an attached office of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).”

He said there is an “undeclared emergency in the country”. “An undeclared emergency is more dangerous than a declared emergency. The BJP has ended the spirit of democracy in the country,” he added.

Gandhi will address a rally in Jammu on Monday. He will celebrate Republic Day with locals in J&K’s Banihal area before heading for the Kashmir Valley. His Bharat Jodo campaign will conclude on January 30 in Srinagar. Several regional leaders have joined the yatra and more leaders from Kashmir are likely to join the yatra in the Valley.
