Delhi court sentences 4 AQIS operatives to seven years, 5 months in jail

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday handed seven years and five months’ jail terms to four Al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) operatives, who were convicted on February 10 of conspiracy for the commission of a terrorist act.

Special Judge Sanjay Khanagwal of Patiala House Court sentenced Mohd Asif, Mohd Abdul Rehman, Zafar Masood and Abdul Sami. The court had convicted the four under the relevant Sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

According to the convicts’ counsel, the four have already spent about seven years in jail, which will be taken into consideration as part of the punishment.

However, on the basis of the offences proved by the prosecution, life imprisonment is the maximum punishment.

On February 10, two suspects, Syed Mohd Zishan Ali and Sabeel Ahmed were acquitted.

On December 14, 2015, the police arrested Asif, a resident of Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, who was found to be the India head of AQIS.

“On the basis of his revelations, Zafar Masood was also arrested from Sambhal on December 15, 2015 and Mohd Abdul Rehman was nabbed from Cuttack, Odisha on December 16, 2015,” a senior police officer of Delhi Police’s Special Cell had said.

According to the police, Rehman had visited Pakistan illegally and met top militants there including Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Sajid Mir, both wanted for the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

“Abdul Sami, a resident of Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) was apprehended from Mewat on January 17, 2016. He was a Pakistan-trained militant,” the police had said.

During investigation, the names of the two who were acquitted also surfaced as part of a conspiracy for providing financial and logistics assistance to the cadres of AQIS in the UAE.

“Ali was deported from UAE in 2017 and was arrested in this case whereas Sabeel Ahmad was deported in 2020. Sabeel was initially arrested in a terror case in Bengaluru (Karnataka) by NIA from IGI Airport in Delhi and later on, he was arrested in this case,” the official had said.

  • Nawaz Sharif wants me sent to jail before agreeing for elections: Imran Khan

Nawaz Sharif wants me sent to jail before agreeing for elections: Imran Khan

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday claimed that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s condition for agreeing to hold elections is to first disqualify him and send him to jail, media reports said.

Before elections, Nawaz Sharif wants me to be disqualified and sent to jail, Imran Khan said in a televised address, Samaa TV reported.

He also said Pakistan is passing through a critical juncture, and “if correct decisions are not taken, the country will suffer a great loss”.

Imran Khan also said that in developed countries, only rule of law prevails.

He further said courts are meant to treat the weak and the powerful equally. The powerful always considered themselves above the law, and the law is not being implemented to save wealth.

The corrupt want to save their money one way or the other, and unfortunately they got NRO (relief in corruption cases) from (then Army chief) Gen (Qamar Javed) Bajwa, he said, as per Samaa TV.

Imran Khan claimed the “corrupt lot” was scared that if he came to power again, their NRO will end.

“I salute our judiciary on behalf of the nation. All our hopes are pinned on the judiciary,” he said

The PTI chief further claimed efforts are being made to prevent him from coming to power. The entire nation is looking towards the judiciary to protect the Constitution.

“I want to ask the nation to prepare themselves, these people will pressurize the judiciary again,” he said, Samaa TV reported.

The former Prime Minister maintained that if the country is to be taken out of the quagmire, elections must be held soon. If elections are not held within 90 days, it will be a violation of the Constitution.

“If elections are not held, caretaker governments will have no value,” he stated.

Imran Khan said during the PTI era, these people used to raise slogans of “respect the vote”, but are now scared of elections. They will only announce elections once they know the grounds have been prepared.

  • Telangana’s migrant worker freed from Dubai jail after 14 years

Telangana’s migrant worker freed from Dubai jail after 14 years

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A migrant worker from Telangana’s Nizamabad district, who was jailed after being convicted in an alleged murder case, was released from Dubai jail after almost 14 years.

Makuri Shankar of Mendora village spent a decade of his life in Fujairah jail in Dubai and reached his home town on Friday.

He went to Dubai for employment in 2006 and worked as a foreman in a company for three years.

However, an unusual incident happened in 2009 when he was supposed to return to his native land.

A coworker of Shankar accidentally fell down from the sixth floor of an under-construction building and died. The Dubai Police after investigating the incident held Shankar responsible for the man’s death and locked him up.

Following the arrest, Shankar defended himself that he had no relation to the incident and was only carrying out his job at the site.

He justified by saying that the man had slipped and fallen by accident which was ignored by the court of Dubai which handed him a death sentence in 2013.

Shanker then appealed for a reconsideration of his punishment following which the court directed that the family of the deceased should bring an amnesty document in order to avoid the death sentence.

Shankar’s family, along with TDP leader Degam Yadagoud from Nizamabad district approached a lawyer in Dubai who revealed to them that the man who died belonged to Rajasthan.

They then approached the deceased’s family members and offered them financial assistance of Rs.5 lakh and got an amnesty paper signed by them and presented it to the Dubai court following which the court acquitted Shankar of the death penalty.

Finally, Shankar with the help of migrants’ rights activists after securing the pardon of the victim’s family reached home on Friday after almost 17 years.

  • Accused in Vivekananda Reddy murder shifted to Hyderabad Jail

Accused in Vivekananda Reddy murder shifted to Hyderabad Jail

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Three of the accused in the sensational murder case of former Andhra Pradesh minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy were shifted to Chanchalguda Jail here on Friday after they were produced before the CBI Special Court, which adjourned the hearing to March 10.

Amid tight security, Sunil Yadav, Umashankar Reddy and Devireddy Shivshankar Reddy were shifted to Chanchalguda Jail after the court extended their judicial custody.

Earlier, they were brought from Kadapa Jail to Hyderabad and produced before the CBI Court at Nampally Court Complex.

Erra Gangi Reddy, who is on bail and driver Dastagiri, who has turned an approver, also appeared in the court.

This was the first time after the Supreme Court transferred the case from Kadapa to Hyderabad that the accused appeared in the court here.

Shivshankar Reddy’s counsel brought to the notice of the court that he has to appear in a court in Kadapa in connection with another case. The judge asked him to file a petition for the permission.

Vivekananda Reddy, paternal uncle of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was found murdered mysteriously at his residence at Pulivendula in Kadapa district on March 15, 2019.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP, brother of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him. He was murdered hours before he was to launch YSR Congress Party’s election campaign in Kadapa.

Though three Special Investigation Teams (SITs) conducted the probe, they failed to solve the mystery.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Sunitha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The CBI filed a chargesheet in the murder case on October 26, 2021 and followed it up with a supplementary charge sheet on January 31, 2022

In November last year, the Supreme Court transferred to a CBI court in Hyderabad the trial and probe into the larger conspiracy behind the murder. The apex court observed that doubts raised by Sunitha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

Stepping up the pace of investigation, the CBI on January 28 questioned Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy, more than four-and-a-half hours.

Avinash Reddy is nephew of Vivekananda Reddy and cousin of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Imran Khan asks supporters to prepare for ‘Jail Bharo’ movement in Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday asked his workers and supporters to prepare for ‘Jail Bharo’ movement across the country, media reported.

Khan’s comments come in the wake of sedition cases filed against his party’s Senior Vice-President Fawad Chaudhry and former member of the National Assembly Shandana Gulzar, while Senator Azam Swati and Shahbaz Gill were booked earlier for speaking against the military.

During his televised address, the deposed Prime Minister said his party could have opted for a nationwide strike, but will choose to fill the prisons instead in light of the fears that the country’s economy might deteriorate further, Geo News reported.

“We have two options: Considering what they have been doing, we could have gone for a wheel-jam strike and demonstrations – which is also a way and a democratic one.”

“But since the state of economy is so bad, it’ll worsen. Therefore, I ask all my workers, the Pakistani nation and everyone to prepare for Jail Bharo movement,” Khan said, Geo News reported.

The former premier, while addressing the youth and nation, added that his party won’t stay quiet on the violence being inflicted on his party’s members. “Instead of causing destruction, we would now prepare Jail Bharo movement.”

“It was their plan to weaken Tehreek-e-Insaf by frightening and threatening,” the PTI chief said.

Khan claimed his party never committed such atrocities in its tenure as the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government in the centre has.

“Fawad Chaudhry was picked up from home at 3 a.m. What did Shandana Gulzar do that made her a terrorist. As the court gives bail to Sheikh Rashid, more cases are being filed against him,” the PTI chairman said, insisting how action has been taken against every person who called out the regime change, Geo News reported.
