Sharad Pawar backs Rahul, says jail term attempt to suppress opposition

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: NCP supremo Sharad Pawar came out in support of Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, saying his conviction in a criminal defamation case was an attempt to “suppress the voice” of opposition leaders.

Pawar also drew parallels between the conviction of Gandhi and NCP leader and former Lok Sabha member from Lakshadweep P P Mohammed Faizal, who was disqualified from the lower house after his conviction in an attempt-to-murder case.

“I express my serious concerns at the attempts to curtail fundamental rights, freedom of speech and democratic expression in the country. The repeated attempts to suppress the voice of political parties, leaders and citizens of India is a matter of grave concern,” Pawar said.

“Today’s judgment of Rahul Gandhi underscores the point. NCP MP P P Mohammed Faizal’s case is also a similar case in point. I deplore this new trend in our political landscape, which should concern everyone in today’s scenario,” the Rajya Sabha member said.

Faizal was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha within two days of his conviction on January 11.

The disqualification was not revoked even after Faizal appealed to the Kerala High Court for a stay on his conviction and sentence, which the high court suspended on January 25.

On Thursday, a trial court in Gujarat sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “why all thieves have Modi surname” remark. The Lok Sabha member too faces the risk of disqualification.

The Surat court has granted Gandhi bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court. The Congress said Gandhi will file an appeal against the verdict.

Telangana YouTuber, 4 others sent to jail for assaulting cops

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A city court on Wednesday sent YouTuber Chintapandu Naveen Kumar alias Teenmaar Mallanna and four others to judicial custody in a case registered against them for allegedly abducting and assaulting two policemen.

The accused, who were arrested by Rachakonda police late on Tuesday night, were presented before a court in Hayathnagar, which sent them to judicial custody.

The accused, who have been booked for kidnapping, wrongful confinement, assault and attempt to murder, were later shifted to Cherlapally jail.

While it was earlier believed that Mallanna was arrested for alleged derogatory comments against Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his family members, Rachakonda police clarified that he and four others working for his YouTube channel Q News were arrested for assaulting policemen.

According to police, two police constables were on duty near a hotel in the Peerzadiguda area on Tuesday evening to carry out vehicle checking to prevent chain snatchings.

Three unknown persons, armed with lathis, approached the police constables and forcibly took them to the nearby Q News office. Though policemen tried to show their identity cards, the attackers snatched these, took them to Q News office and produced them before Mallanna stating that police are loitering near their office.

“Mallanna then ordered his associates to bring them into his room, where the police officers were thrashed severely after snatching awy their cell phones. Teenmaar Mallanna started assaulting them with a stick provoking his associates by wrongfully confining in their office,” the police said.

Later the police parties deployed in the area rushed to the spot but the accused obstructed their efforts to rescue them.

Police arrested Q News newsreader Teenmaar Mallanna, editor Bandaru Ravinder, driver Uppala Nikhil, office boy Sirra Sudhakar, and software engineer Chintha Sandeep Kumar, and registered a case under Sections 363 (kidnapping), 342 (wrongful confinement), 395 (dacoity), 332 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 307 (attempt to murder) read with 34 (common intention) of the IPC and section 7 (1) of Criminal Amendment Act, 1932.

Earlier, several police complaints were lodged against Mallanna at various police stations for his alleged derogatory comments against Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao, his son and IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao and daughter MLC K. Kavitha on his YouTube channel.

Telangana Jagruthi member Naveen Goud had lodged a complaint against Mallanna, with LB Nagar police for making defamatory comments against Kavitha and Rama Rao, demanding immediate action be taken against Mallanna and his channel should be banned.

BJP chief Bandi Sanjay had visited Mallanna’s house late on Tuesday night and condemned the arrest.

“Democracy is under threat in Telangana. Let’s Save Democracy ! KCR is digging his own grave by stifling the voices which are questioning his tyranny. Earnest request to media organisations not to budge into the pressure of BRS govt,” tweeted Sanjay after the visit.

Mallanna’s supporters alleged that instead of taking action against those who attacked Q News office on Sunday night, the police arrested him.

Unidentified persons had the office and ransacked computers and furniture.

Mallanna, who was not present in the office at the time of attack, had alleged that 25 BRS goondas attacked his office. He claimed that it was a conspiracy to murder him.

Mallanna, who calls himself a journalist, is a vocal critic of the BRS government, Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao and his family members.

  • Amritpal’s uncle moved to Dibrugarh jail in Assam

Amritpal’s uncle moved to Dibrugarh jail in Assam

    [ad_1]

Dibrugarh: Radical preacher Amritpal Singh’s uncle Harjit Singh was brought to Assam by the Punjab Police on Tuesday morning, a senior official said.

Harjit Singh, who was moved to the Dibrugarh jail by road from Guwahati, is the fifth person linked to Amritpal’s ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD) to be brought to the Northeastern state, he said.

A cavalcade of seven security vehicles took Harjit Singh from the Guwahati airport to the Dibrugarh central jail where he was lodged at 7.10 am, the official said.

He gave himself up before the police in the early hours of Monday.

Harjit Singh, who officials say helped his nephew gain control over the accounts of WPD, is among the five people slapped with the National Security Act (NSA), which allows the preventive detention of anyone who could threaten national security or public order.

On Sunday, four WPD members were brought to the Dibrugarh central jail after the Punjab government on Saturday began a major crackdown on the outfit, headed by Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal, who is wanted in several criminal cases. They are Daljit Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and ‘Pradhanmantri’ Bajeka.

Over 100 people have been arrested so far in the crackdown, according to Punjab Police.

Heavy security has been deployed at the Mohanbari airport in Dibrugarh, fuelling speculation that more WPD members could be brought to the BJP-ruled state from Punjab, around 2,500 km away.

Harjit Singh along with driver Harpreet Singh surrendered before the police near Bullandpur gurdwara in Jalandhar’s Mehatpur area. Punjab’s Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range) Narinder Bhargav was among the officers at the spot.

In a video shot then, Harjit Singh was seen producing his licensed 32-bore pistol and cash amounting to Rs 1-1.25 lakh that he was carrying in a Mercedes. The car was later seized and the two men taken away by the Amritsar Rural police, officials said.

Assam’s Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Prashanta Bhuyan reviewed the security arrangements in Dibrugarh on Monday.

Bhuyan refused to share details, stating, “These are sensitive matters related to the internal security of the state.”

The Punjab Police crackdown on WPD began weeks after Amritpal and his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar to secure the release of an arrested associate.

The episode had raised fears over the possibility of the return of Khalistani militancy to the state that borders Pakistan.

WPD was formed by singer-activist Deep Sandhu. Amritpal took over as its chief a month after his death last year.
