Unending story of Prince Mukarram Jah; could he have been the Caliph of Muslim world?

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Like the famous Thousand and One Night (Alf Laila wa Laila) unending episodes, stories from the enigmatic treasure trough of Prince Mukarram Jah keep tumbling out.

One is more intriguing than the previous one.

Alexander Azam Jah, the son of his second wife, Australian Helen, was conspicuous by his absence during his funeral.

    MS Education Academy

He has not shown up in Hyderabad since.

A ceremony was held in Khilwat Palace (also known as Chowmohalla Palace) where perhaps only one of the oldest loyalists of the Nizam family, Kumari Indira Devi Dharaj Girji was seen honouring the Ninth Nizam Azmat Jah on his coronation.

A few days after the ceremony, the traditional family acrimony came out in public.  One of the late Mukarram Jah’s cousins said the family members would not give up on the cases that had been filed in the courts of law against the Eighth Nizam. “We will continue the fight against the injustice done to us,” he said firmly.

Still, a few days later, one of the members of the House of Asaf Jah, prompted by a section of Sahebzada’s, Raunaq Yar Khan, declared himself the Ninth Nizam. He now claims that he has some documents to back his “rightful” place.

Mukarram Jah married Jameela Boularous of Morocco in 1992 and divorced her within a year or two.  The reasons for this short-lived association are shrouded in stories that cannot be confirmed. However, the couple had a daughter Zairin Unnisa Begum known in short as Zairin. She was born in 1994.

Intriguingly, John Zubrzycki, the Australian who wrote the book The last Nizam, chronicling the life of Prince Mukarram Jah does not acknowledge Jameela as his wife and does not mention Zairin as his daughter.  Zubrzycki on the other hand gives the names of four women as the wives of the Prince. Says he, “Jah leaves behind four children – Azmet his eldest son and a daughter Shekhyar by his first wife Ezra; Azam his son by his second wife, Helen; and Nilofer by his fourth wife Manolya Onur…” He skips the mention of the third one, who over she was.

The story of Zairin becomes more intriguing because she and her mother were not there during the funeral of the Prince who was a little less than 90 years when he passed away in Istanbul, Turkey. His body was brought to Hyderabad and given a gun salute by the government of Telangana State before he was laid to rest at the Asaf Jahi graveyard located within the premises of the historical Makkah Masjid.

A few days ago Zairin and her mother arrived in Hyderabad and besides attending numerous functions, held an exhibition of paintings and photographs mainly of Sultan Abdul Majid and the Prince. There were two paintings that caught my attention.

One was a letter purportedly written by the Sultan and the other by the last Nizam Osman Ali Khan.

Syed Ahmad Khan, the editor of Rahnum-e-Deccan an Urdu daily published from Hyderabad, says that he found the letters of Sultan Abdul Majeed and that of Osman Ali Khan in the archives of his newspaper as late as 2021.

The first letter purportedly written by the Sultan declared Osman Ali Khan as an interim Caliph in his place. The letter was addressed to Osman Ali Khan. It has a date on it. It also has the names of several other people.

The second letter is written by Osman Ali Khan and addressed to one Col. Syed Mohammad Amir Uddin Khan wherein he tells him how the Caliph has handed him over the caliphate.  He also asks him to deliver the letter to the ‘rightful’ successor of Imam Mahdi, whom a section of the Muslims believed would arrive in the last days of this world.

These intriguing letters have brought the entire visit of Zairin and her mother into the circle of more doubts.

Syed Ahmad Khan, says that he discovered the letters some two years ago.  He does not explain why he did not disclose their existence to the family of Mukarram Jah or the Hyderabad public. He did not even bring them to the notice of Prince Muffakham Jah, the younger brother of Mukarram Jah who frequently visits Hyderabad. He could have made them public and allowed some experts to scrutinize the documents.

A Hyderabad-based historian who does not wish to be identified said, “The second document has no date. If there was a gap of some years between these letters how is the paper and the ink appear to be the same as if both were written at the same time.”

I have my doubts too.  Why is the existence of these letters not known to anyone of some consequence in Hyderabad or anywhere else? For instance, the immediate family members of Mukarram Jah or those who were close to him for decades had no clue about them. My second doubt is this. When Osman Ali Khan had declared that the son born to Azam Jah and Durrushehvar will be entitled to Caliphate why he did not accept the offer given by Abdul Majeed?

I, as a long-standing journalist who is interested in the history, culture, and politics of Hyderabad, demand that a judicious inquiry be held over the authenticity of these letters and that the public be made aware of the results of any such investigation.

I leave the claims of Zairin and her mother to the family and legitimate heir of the late Prince. Intriguingly, no family member of the late Mukarram Jah worth the name has responded to the sudden appearance of Zairin on the Royal horizon of the former Hyderabad State.

  • Hyderabad: Azmet Jah doesn’t deserve Nizam IX title; says Nawab Najaf Ali

Hyderabad: Azmet Jah doesn’t deserve Nizam IX title; says Nawab Najaf Ali

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Nawab Najaf Ali Khan stated on Sunday that Azmet Jah doesn’t deserve to hold the title of Nizam IX.

Khan argued in a written appeal that Azmet Jah’s father never lived in Hyderabad and as such he has “never learnt about thr Asif Jahi Tehzeeb or rituals.” As such, he cannot be referred to as the “head of the Asif Jah dynasty” when all he knows is exclusion of the family and leaving no stone unturned to sit on the throne on his father’s Ziyarat day.

Najaf Ali Khan said that Mukarram Jah (the titular Nizam of Hyderabad) did not have any interest in the title awarded to him which in turn complicated his life. He further became a silent witness which led to his downfall as well as the downfall of the entire family.

“Even though he had the enormous wealth and resources to better the condition of the family, he didn’t wish to stay in Hyderabad and look after family issues. If he had taken action when the family’s condition became dilapidated, this
situation would not be faced by a once majestic family,” he argued.

Khan stated that Azmat Jha’s declaration raises several objections and rejections.

“Firstly, a “Decree” can only be pronounced by a Court, government authority or the head of a state. A decree that self-proclaims a common citizen as the head of a dynasty is not legally valid, especially so after the abolishment of Titles and Privy Purses in 1971,” he said.

Khan further brought up the tale of Nizam VII, who passed away on 24th February 1967.

“Not even three days had passed since his death, when on 27th February 1967, Mukarram Jah obtained and presented a certificate that allowed him to take control of and seize all the private properties, movable and immovable wealth held by Nizam VII,” he wrote.

Khan further said that this led to the onset of the seventh Nizam’s ultimate destruction to the family as it allowed him to smuggle uncountable national and familial artifacts out of India, sell and profit from them.

“However just within a year, on 26th January 1968, this certificate was quashed by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in W.P. No 863 of 1967 Ahmedunnisa Begum Alias Shahzadi Begum vs Union of India rep by Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs Government of India Mew Delhi and Mukarram Jah Bahadur,” he wrote.

    Excerpts from the judgement:

“In the result we hold that the Government of India has no power or jurisdiction whether under Article 362 or otherwise to issue the certificate recognizing the 2nd Respondent as the sole successor to all the private properties moveable and immoveable held by the late Nizam or to authorize transfer of the private properties to the 2nd Respondent. Accordingly, we allow the writ Petition with costs and quash the certificate dated 27.2.1967 issued to the Nizam the 2nd Respondent relating to the successor to private property of the late Nizam”.

When Mukarram Jah challenged the 1968 Judgement of Andhra Pradesh High Court in the Supreme Court, he requested Union of India to become party towards his support of the Succession Certificate. The Union of India refused to help him and they were more interested to help the heirs of Nizam VII to recover possession which they lost only on account of the certificate as and said in ref Ministry of Law (Shri R.S. Gao Secretary) MHA/U.O. No1/3/-Poll. III dated 28-3-68 Page no 13 para 5.

“And if the order quashing the certificate is not reversed, certainly it is the duty of the Government to help the heirs of the late Nizam to recover possession which they lost only on account of the certificate”. Further in 1971, in the 26th Amendment of the Constitution of India, the Government abolished all Titles, and Privy Purses held by the princely states. The Constitution explicitly states the follows: “363A. Recognition granted to Rulers of Indian States to cease and privy purses to be abolished. – Notwithstanding anything in this Constitution or in any law for the time being in force.”

The Prince, Chief or other person who, at any time before the commencement of the Indian Constitution (Twenty-sixth Amendment) Act, 1971, was recognized by the President as the Ruler of an Indian State or any person who, at any time before such commencement, was recognized by the President.

    Nizam IX title not applicable

“It is imperative to note that TWICE, in 1968 and 1971, the title held by Mukarram Jah was quashed and abolished by competent government authorities thus rendering his title as Nizam VIII null and void,” Khan added.

“Issued as per the instructions of Walashan Azmet Jah Bahadur” Azmet Jah has self-proclaimed himself as IXth Nizam of Asaf Jahi Dynasty by issuing the self-declaration dated Friday 20th January 2023 issued by his office signed by 2 persons, both who are not a part of the Nizam Family,” he wrote.

“The said Succession Certificate dated 27.02.1967 was misused several times by his GPA’S to sell Wakf and ancestral properties worth crores of rupees and cause irreparable financial damage to the family. It has also been misused by them to claim compensations by claiming that Mukarram Jah is the sole successor to his grandfather and to the Properties left behind by him. For over half a decade, these illegal and atrocious acts have pushed the family into a state of desolate financial ruin and caused damage that cannot be undone,” he mentioned.

This certificate was falsely presented in the London High Court which caused the family a financial damage of over 25 million pounds, leading to a loss in reputation and infringement of rights.

To provide the final clarity on this, Prince Mukarram Jah’s status in 1971, has been reduced to a common citizen and he was no more a sovereign ruler.

Khan said that he has alerted both the Central and State government on the misuse of this certificate. He also said that strict legal action will be pursued to prevent misuse of this null and void title and curb any misinformation that stems
    from it.

  • Has Mukarram Jah left any legacy? Or is it just the name of Seventh Nizam that evokes feelings

Has Mukarram Jah left any legacy? Or is it just the name of Seventh Nizam that evokes feelings

    [ad_1]

These past few days have been dominated by events that took place in Turkey and followed up in Hyderabad.
Nawab Mir Barakat Ali Khan who was popularly known as Mukarram Jah Bahadur passed away in Istanbul, Turkey at 89 on January 14. His body was shifted to Hyderabad in a chartered aircraft the next day evening. A few selected groups of people were allowed to pay him their last respects that night.

The next day the general public was facilitated to enter the Chowmahalla Palace to see him for the last time between 8-00 am and 1-00 pm.  The body was later shifted to Makkah Masjid where he was interned in a grave alongside the other Asaf Jahi rulers.

One question that has lingered on in the minds of the people is: Why he did not choose to be buried next to his grandfather, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, the Seventh Nizam, in the foreground of Masjid Judi located in the premises of King Kothi?  It was the Seventh Nizam who had chosen him over his first son Azam Jah Bahadur to be his successor.

In the night of January 20th, Mukarram Jah’s first son Mir Mohammad Azmat Ali Khan Azmet Jah has been anointed as the new head of the family. The press note issued by the Palace said that the successor of Mukarram Jah was declared in the presence of “immediate family members, trustees, close friends, well-wishers, and staff members.”

    Leaving out Muffakham Jah

Surprisingly, among these “immediate family members…” Muffakham Jah, the only brother of the late Prince, was not present.  According to Palace sources, Muffakham Jah who was there at the Palace and later at Makkah Masjid during the last ceremonies was not informed about this succession ceremony. Why?

    Muffakham Jah
    Muffakham Jah

What is left of the grand old Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan who owned huge tracts of land in Hyderabad and on its outskirts, Golconda Fort, several palaces, etc.? (For reference please refer to the Blue Book, a document spread over several pages. Copies of this book are available with some resourceful persons in Hyderabad).

It is sad but true that Mukarram Jah did not value his lineage or heritage and quietly left Hyderabad in 1971 never to return and stay here for long.

Yes, he did make a few sojourns to the city, visited a mosque near Katora House in the precinct of the Golconda Fort, and met a few friends and acquaintances. He is also said to have held a ceremony or two in these last 51 years in Hyderabad.

    Mukarram Jah Trust

    Mukarram Jah School 3
    Mukarram Jah School

However, he did establish Mukarram Jah Trust for Education and Learning and, roped in some big names to be part of that trust but nothing beyond that has happened.  An educational institution for boys and girls has been set up somewhere in the mid-eighties. He made a few visits to the school whenever he was in the city.

City watchers ask what he has done beyond establishing that school for Hyderabad and its people. There are many other people who have done a similar or even better job. For instance, you have Sultanul Uloom Education Society, Deccan Education Society, Madinah Education Society, Shaadan Education Society, etc. where thousands upon thousands of boys and girls are graduating every year.  Hundreds of them are medical, engineering, pharmacy, education, and business management graduates.

So what is the big deal if Mukarram Jah has established one school? People ask.

    Nazri Bagh in dispute

    King Kothi Palace

The status of King Kothi Palace of which only a portion—Nazri Bagh—is left with the family is not known.  Even Nazri Bagh is said to have become a disputed property with no clarification from quarters that claim proximity to the Prince and his heirs.

    Prince Neglects Chiran Palace

Some six acres of property spread over different parts of the premises of KBR Park belong to the late Prince. It is known by its original name Chiran Palace. The Prince and the people appointed by him have held long but unending negotiations with the State government over the status of the land.  The negotiations are in limbo.

    KBR Park
    KBR Park
    IMG 20180624 070030849
    Mosque in Chiran Palace

Chiran Palace is occasionally used by the family.  This writer interviewed Prince Mukarram Jah and his son Azmet Jah there a few years ago.

    Chowmahalla Palace opened

Now we come to the Chowmahallah which has been renovated and opened for the public by Princess Esra Jah, former wife of the Prince, who holds a general power of attorney over his properties in Hyderabad. She has done a fine job. Whoever visits the palace comes out praising it. It was the Durbar Hall of this palace where the body of the Prince was kept for the people to pay their last respects.

Now, the questions that the people of Hyderabad would like to ask: Princes Esra, whenever she is in Hyderabad, stays at Falaknuma Palace where a separate luxurious portion has been left aside for the family by Taj Falaknuma management.  Would Azmet Jah stay in the same area as her mother? Or would he like to stay at Chowmahalla Palace where an exclusive portion has been left for occasional use?

What role would he like to play within his extended family that includes a host of hostile relations? What relations would he like to have with Hyderabad as such (that also means the government of Telangana). Finally, the most important question: Would Azmet Jah stay in Hyderabad at all, or would like to fly back to his cozy corners in the UK and the USA?

Let us all wait and watch.
