New Delhi: In a blistering attack on the BJP, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said Rahul Gandhi, the son of a martyred prime minister, was called ‘Mir Jafar’ and insults were hurled at his family but he would not bow down as he belongs to a family whose members have nurtured democracy by their blood.
Her attack came after the former Congress president and her brother was disqualified from Lok Sabha, a day after he was convicted by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case Thursday.
In a series of tweets, Priyanka Gandhi launched an all-out attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying in a tweet in Hindi, “Narendra Modi ji, your sycophants called the son of a martyred prime Minister a traitor, Mir Jafar. One of your Chief Minister raised questions as to who is the father of Rahul Gandhi? Following the custom of Kashmiri Pandits, a son wears ‘pagdi’ after his father’s death, maintaining his family’s tradition.” “Insulting the whole family and the Kashmiri Pandit community, you asked in Parliament why we don’t keep the name Nehru. But no judge gave you a sentence of two years. Did not disqualify you from the Parliament,” she said.
Stepping up its attack on Rahul Gandhi over his democracy in danger remark in London, the BJP had on Tuesday dubbed him as the “present-day Mir Jafar of Indian polity” who went overseas seeking help from foreign forces to become a ‘nawab’ in India.
The Congress general secretary said Gandhi is a “true patriot” and has questioned Adani Group’s loot, raised questions on Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.
“…You call my family dynasty, do note that this family has nurtured India’s democracy with their blood,” she said.
This family raised the voice of the people of India and fought for the truth for generations, she said.
Later, speaking with reporters after attending a meeting at the AICC headquarters here, she said, “Be it the BJP spokespersons, ministers, MPs ministers or the PM himself, they keep criticising my family, Rahul ji, Indira ji, my mother, Nehru ji and use abusive language, everyone knows this, but he has not been handed down a two-year sentence or disqualified them.” “My brother raised the issue of Adani and that is why all this is happening. There was a stay on the (defamation) case and after my brother made that speech in Parliament about Adani why was the case suddenly revived,” she said.

This government does not want to answer on Adani issue and that is why all this planning has been done, she alleged and added that the Congress will keep fighting and will not be afraid.
The court in Surat sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in the defamation case, filed on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” Hitting out at the government over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha, the Congress said it was “a black day for Indian democracy” and asserted that the battle will be fought both “legally and politically”.

Sambit Patra calls Rahul Gandhi present-day Mir Jafar of Indian politics

New Delhi: BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra on Tuesday called Congress leader Rahul Gandhi present-day Mir Jafar of Indian politics and sought an apology over the latter’s speech in the UK.
Addressing a press conference, Patra said, “Rahul will have to apologise, we will keep raising voice for it.”
Sambit Patra said, “Rahul Gandhi is the Mir Jafar of today’s politics. What Mir Jafar did to become Nawab and what Rahul Gandhi has done in London – is exactly the same. The prince wants to become the Nawab for which he is seeking help from foreign powers.”
Patra said, “Rahul insulted the country and sought foreign intervention. We believe that this is not an issue, but a conspiracy. Rahul will have to apologise. Rahul cannot do away without apologising. He had to apologise in the Rafale case, and he will have to apologise in Parliament for his remarks in Cambridge.”]
Rahul, while in his address in London recently, said, “Everybody knows and it’s been in the news a lot that Indian democracy is under pressure and under attack. I am an Opposition leader in India, we are navigating that (Opposition) space. The institutional framework which is required for a democratic Parliament, free press, the judiciary, just the idea of mobilisation, moving around all are getting constrained. So, we are facing an attack on the basic structure of Indian democracy.”

Iranian director Jafar Panahi starts hunger strike in prison

Tehran: Iranian award-winning director, Jafar Panahi, who has been imprisoned in Tehran for six months, announced that he has begun a hunger strike to protest the authorities’ refusal to release him on bail pending a retrial.
The note from Jafar Panahi, starting of his hunger strike, was published on the Instagram page of his wife, Tahereh Saeedi.
In the note, prominent Iranian director emphasized, “I categorically declare in protest against the extra-legal and inhuman behavior of the judicial and security apparatus and their hostage-taking, I have started hunger strike from the morning of the February 1, 2023. I refused to eat and drink any food and medicine until I was released.”
“I will remain in this situation until maybe my lifeless body is released from prison,” he added.
Panahi also wrote in his note, “According to the law, I should have been released on bail after accepting my request for a retrial, but my case has been adjourned for more than 100 days.”
“While we have seen that it takes less than 30 days from the time of arrest to the hanging of the innocent youth of our country, it took more than 100 days to transfer my case to the branch with the intervention of security forces.”
“What is certain is that the violent and illegal behaviour of the security institution and the reckless surrender of the judiciary once again shows the implementation of selective and tasteful laws.”
“It is only an excuse for repression. I knew that the judicial system and the security institutions have no will to implement the law (which they brag about), but out of respect for my lawyers and friends, I went through all the legal channels to fight for my rights.”

“Today, like many people trapped in Iran, I have no choice but to protest against these inhumane behaviours with my dearest possession, that is, my life.”
62-year-old Jafar Panahi, Iranian film director, screenwriter, and film editor, was arrested on July 11, 2022, when he went to the prosecutor’s office to follow up on the situation of another filmmaker, Mohammad Rasoulof.
Panahi was also arrested in 2010, after his support for anti-government protests. He was later convicted of “propaganda against the regime”, sentenced to six years of imprisonment and banned from directing or writing films, Mehr News Agency reported.
Panahi’s arrest was met with a wave of domestic and international condemnation, but the Islamic Republic has not responded to requests for his release.
Thousands of film personalities have been arrested in Iran as part of the crackdown on protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested on suspicion of violating the country’s strict dress code.
The protests involved people from all walks of life and different sects in Iran after Amini’s killing.
Iranian women are at the fore in the demonstrations, in which many young people participate, to chants of “Woman life freedom” and “Death to the dictator.”
The protests represent one of the country’s boldest challenges since the 1979 revolution.

Iran to rule on release of film-maker Jafar Panahi

Iran’s judiciary is to rule on whether to release the film-maker Jafar Panahi on bail after his conviction was overturned by the supreme court, his lawyer said.
Panahi, 62, who has won a number of awards at European film festivals, was arrested on 11 July last year and sent to jail to serve a six-year sentence which had been handed down in 2010 for “propaganda against the system”. He served two months at the time before being granted a conditional release. He was also barred from leaving Iran and making films, and was largely confined to his home until his arrest in July.
But on 15 October the supreme court quashed the conviction and ordered a retrial.
“Early this morning, judicial officials told me that they will make a decision about Panahi by the end of the week,” his lawyer, Saleh Nikbakht, said on Saturday.
“Panahi’s case had remained blocked in the courts since mid-October, but it was finally sent to the court of appeal on Monday to launch the legal proceedings.
“By law, he should immediately be released on bail and his case reviewed again.”
Panahi won a Golden Lion at the Venice film festival in 2000 for his film The Circle. In 2015, he won the Golden Bear at Berlin for Taxi Tehran, and in 2018 won the best screenplay prize at Cannes for Three Faces.
Panahi’s conviction followed his support for mass protests in 2009 against the disputed results of that year’s presidential election, in which the populist leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won a second term.

As well as the six-year jail term, the court sentenced Panahi to a 20-year ban from directing or writing films, travelling or speaking to the media. However, he has continued to live and work in Iran and the films he has made have tried to find loopholes in these restrictions.
According to his lawyer, Panahi already had health problems before his arrest, and he contracted a serious skin disease in prison.
Doctors had said he needed to be treated “outside prison”, the lawyer said.
Panahi was arrested in July after he attended a court hearing for a fellow film director, Mohammad Rasoulof, who had been detained a few days earlier.
Rasoulof was released from prison on 7 January after being granted a two-week furlough for health reasons, his lawyer told Agence France-Presse.
Separately, a court ordered the release on bail of the activist Arash Sadeghi, who was detained in October during mass protests against the death in custody of Masha Amini following her arrest for an alleged breach of Iran’s strict dress code for women, the Etemad newspaper reported.
