Italian police arrest ’Ndrangheta mafia boss after five years on the run

    [ad_1]

Italian authorities have announced the arrest of a top boss of the ’Ndrangheta mafia after he spent almost five years on the run.

Pasquale Bonavota, 49, who featured on the police’s list of most dangerous criminals, had been sought since November 2018 after escaping an arrest warrant for homicide and mafia association issued by a magistrate in Calabria, southern Italy.

He was arrested on Thursday morning in the northern port city of Genoa, carabinieri officers said. Local media said Bonavota was leaving the city’s cathedral when he was arrested and was carrying a fake ID.

Bonavota is considered the brains of the ’Ndrangheta’s Bonavota clan, which includes his two brothers, based in the Sant’Onofrio area of the Calabrian province of Vibo Valentia.

The clan also operates around Rome and in the northern regions of Piedmont and Liguria, which includes Genoa.

The ’Ndrangheta is Italy’s most powerful and wealthy mafia, controlling the bulk of cocaine flowing into Europe. It operates in more than 40 countries.

It has successfully expanded well beyond its traditional domains of drug trafficking and loan sharking, now using shell companies and frontmen to reinvest illegal gains in the legitimate economy.

Bonavota went on the run shortly after being sentenced by a lower court to life in prison for two murders committed in 2014 and 2004 of a lower-ranking member of his clan and a rival boss of a nearby clan.

That sentence was overturned in 2021 by a court of appeal while he was on the run. However, Bonavota was the last remaining fugitive suspect implicated in a massive case against the Vibo Valentia ’Ndrangheta that led to the 2021 maxi-trial against more than 300 alleged mafia members and their helpers. The trial is ongoing.

In that indictment, Bonavota is described as being a leader who “took the most important decisions” along with other top ’Ndrangheta bosses, and “looked after the interests of the association in the Rome area and in the gambling sectors and drug trafficking”.

The arrest of Bonavota comes three months after the high-profile capture of the Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. The Cosa Nostra boss had been a fugitive for 30 years.

Italian tourism video mocked for using footage of Slovenia

    [ad_1]

Italy’s tourism ministry has faced ridicule after an official video to attract tourists to Italy used footage of people in Slovenia drinking Slovenian wine.

The video, part of a €9m ($9.91m) campaign produced by the Armando Testa communications group, was widely mocked by critics and on social media even before it emerged that part of it had been shot abroad.

Titled “Open to Meraviglia” (Open to Wonder), the video features a computerised “influencer” version of Venus, a symbol of Italian art, as depicted by Sandro Botticelli in his renaissance masterpiece The Birth of Venus.

The very modern “Venus” dons a mini-skirt and is shown eating pizza and presenting some of Italy’s main tourist attractions such as the Coliseum in Rome or Florence’s cathedral.

The art historian Tomaso Montanari called the advertising campaign “grotesque”, and an “obscene” waste of money, while the video was lampooned by users of Italian social media platforms.

The most controversial footage shows a group of young people smiling on a sunlit patio drinking wine in what is presented as a typical Italian scene. However, eagle-eyed viewers spotted that the patio in question is actually in the Cotar region of Slovenia, close to the Italian border, and the bottle on the table has a Cotar wine label.

The Armando Testa communications group was not immediately available to comment.

The Italian tourism minister, Daniela Santanche, a member of prime minister Giorgia Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party, called critics of the video “snobs” and said the depiction of Venus as an influencer was aimed at attracting young people.

  • Gioventù Ribelle, one of the biggest Italian video game scandals reconstructed on Kotaku

    [ad_1]

Today in the world of video games we also talk about Italy, unfortunately not in a very positive way. The historian Damiano Gerli, who also collaborates with Multiplayer.it, has in fact reconstructed the case Rebel Youth For Kotakua case that went down in history as one of the most big scandals of the local video game industry, which has caused considerable damage to it.

The article gives a complete account of the facts of the time, starting from the political matrix of the project, endorsed by Giorgia Meloniat the time Minister for Youth Policies and today the Italian Prime Minister, and recounting how it was entrusted to a group of students of the IED by the manager Raul Carbone, at the time also a teacher in the private institute (who admitted it in an official press release, reported in the piece), before being presented to the then President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano on the occasion of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.

Unfortunately the boys, who had very little experience, were given very little time to finish the work, which turned out to be incomplete and generally badly done, as you can verify from the video above, one of the few survivors that shows Rebel Youth in its entirety.

Gerli, who has done an excellent research job, has also reconstructed the phases following the launch, at least as far as he was able to do so, also reporting veiled threats received from no one knows who not to continue with his work.

  • Dozens dead in migrant shipwreck off Italian coast

Dozens dead in migrant shipwreck off Italian coast

    [ad_1]

    migration italy 00337

At least 43 migrants drowned on Sunday after the fishing boat on which they were traveling sank off the coast of the Italian region of Calabria.

According to local authorities, some 250 migrants were crammed aboard the ship, which broke in two about 20 kilometers from the city of Crotone. Over 100 passengers have been rescued, but at least 70 of the people who were aboard the ship remain missing.

Over the course of the morning, bodies, including those of children and at least one newborn baby, have washed ashore in the resort town of Steccato di Cutro, according to local reports.

Although the ship’s port of origin was in Turkey, authorities say the majority of the migrants that have been rescued are from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the disaster was “a huge tragedy that demonstrates how necessary it is to oppose the chains of irregular migration,” adding that more needed to be done to clamp down on “unscrupulous smugglers” who, “in order to get rich, organize improvised trips with inadequate boats and in prohibitive conditions.”

Calabrian President Roberto Occhiuto slammed EU authorities for their inaction in addressing the migration crisis and asked “what has the European Union been doing all these years?”

“Where is Europe when it comes to guaranteeing security and legality?” he asked, adding that regions like his were left on their own to “manage emergencies and mourn the dead.”

According to the International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project, at least 2,366 migrants lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean last year; at least 124 have been reporting missing in its waters since the beginning of this year.

  • UAE-India flight: Drunk Italian woman runs half-naked on plane

UAE-India flight: Drunk Italian woman runs half-naked on plane

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Mumbai Police has arrested an Italian woman passenger for allegedly creating a ruckus mid-air on a Vistara Airline flight soon after taking off from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai on January 30.

The passenger was arrested by Sahar police early Monday morning after the flight landed in Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). She was later given bail by a court here.

According to the Mumbai police the woman who was reportedly inebriated created a ruckus insisting that she be seated in business class despite being booked in economy. She also took off some of her clothes and walked up and down the aisle in a partially naked state hurling abuses and assaulting crew members.

“We confirm that there was an unruly passenger on Vistara flight UK 256 operating from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai on 30 January 2023. In view of the continued unruly conduct and violent behaviour, the captain issued a warning card and made a decision to restrain the passenger,” a Vistara spokesperson said.

“The pilot made regular announcements to assure the other customers onboard of their safety and security. In accordance with the guidelines and our stringent standard operating procedures (SOPs), the security agencies on-ground were informed about taking immediate action upon arrival. The incident has been reported to the relevant authorities as per the SOPs,” the spokesperson added.

After registering a case against the passenger, the Mumbai Police filed a charge sheet within a day.

“Mumbai Police has filed a chargesheet in record time in a case of misbehaviour by an airline passenger mid-air,” police said.

A medical examination was also conducted on the woman before booking her under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. The police said they have completed all formalities of recording statements of co-passengers and crew and others.

“We have completed all the due formalities as per law and filed the chargesheet after recording all the relevant statements and medical and legal procedures,” DCP Dixit Gedam said.

  • Juventus docked 15 points in Serie A by Italian federation for false accounting

Juventus docked 15 points in Serie A by Italian federation for false accounting

    [ad_1]

Juventus were hit with a 15-point penalty for false accounting on Friday after an appeal hearing at the Italian football federation.

The punishment could eliminate the club’s chances of playing in Europe next season. With 20 games left this season, Juve were third in Serie A, 10 points adrift of the leaders, Napoli, who beat them 5-1 last week. The points deduction would push them down into mid-table, outside the spots for European competition.

The ruling is tougher than a nine-point deduction a prosecutor had requested earlier on Friday during a hearing looking at the way Juventus, Italy’s most successful club, and a number of other teams dealt with player exchange deals.

The former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli was banned for two years from football activities and similarly long bans were handed out for other members of Juve’s former board, which resigned en masse in November after an investigation by Turin public prosecutors into alleged false bookkeeping.

It also decided on a 30-month ban for Juve’s former sports director Fabio Paratici, who is now managing director of football at Tottenham. It is understood Tottenham are urgently seeking clarification as to whether Paratici’s ban extends beyond Italy.

Juventus have denied wrongdoing and were initially cleared by the sports court in April. But an appeal was made after the federation collected papers from the Turin prosecutors.

Juventus can appeal the decision to Italy’s highest sports court within the Italian Olympic Committee.

The news comes 17 years after the “Calciopoli” refereeing scandal that resulted in Juventus being demoted to Serie B and stripped of two Serie A titles.

At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Juventus said 23 players agreed to reduce their salary for four months to help the club through the crisis, but prosecutors claim the players gave up only one month’s salary. Turin prosecutors have also apparently discovered more alleged secret payments to their former player Cristiano Ronaldo that were not reported by Juventus.
