Sri Lanka issues red warning over strong winds, rough seas

    [ad_1]

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has issued a red warning for fishing boats over strong winds and rough seas in the southeast Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea.

The rough seas are caused by the depression in the southeast Bay of Bengal and will gradually develop into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday, the Department of Meteorology was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

Due to this, the wind speeds in the above-mentioned sea areas will be between 50 and 60 kmph, the department said.

At times, winds can increase up to 70 kmph in sea areas, it said, adding that heavy showers or thundershowers can be expected in above sea areas.

The department urged all naval and fishing communities not to venture into the above sea areas until further notice.

The department also urged those who are out at aforementioned seas to return to coasts or move to safer areas immediately.

  • Hochul issues emergency order for migrant crisis

Hochul issues emergency order for migrant crisis

The city and the state are preparing for another wave of migrants when the federal Title 42 immigration policy lifts.

“It is a crisis situation, especially with the suspension of Title 42 on Thursday,” Hochul told reporters Tuesday on Long Island. “It’s no surprise that there will literally be thousands of more individuals coming across the border and ultimately finding their way to the state of New York.”

Hochul’s order might also seek to quell frustration in the suburbs after Adams’ announcement Friday that he would look to move some migrants to other counties to alleviate overcrowding and strained city resources.

The Republican county executives in Orange and Rockland issued state of emergency orders that will try to bar hotels from contracting with the city to house migrants, setting up a showdown among local governments.

Hochul seemed Tuesday to try to calm the fervor, suggesting she would work to find new locations, perhaps state-owned facilities, for the asylum-seekers in the city or with municipalities willing to accept them.

“We are in communication with the mayor’s team and also helping him find locations within the city limits, opening up state property and talking to other counties that are interested in having people come,” she told reporters when asked about the counties’ concerns.

The state budget approved last week included $1 billion to help the city with the surge as Adams has urged more outside resources, criticizing the federal government for not doing more.

Hochul said that the state had already deployed about 1,000 members of the National Guard to help the city, and the executive order will allow the state more easily buy food and supplies for the migrants.

She said one of the main obstacles is getting the migrants the approvals necessary to start working legally. She noted that farmers in New York, in particular, need about 5,000 more workers.

“The number one priority for those here is to be able to get a job,” Hochul said. “We want them to get employment, but there’s constraint at the federal level as far as their designation.”

the DCW has issued a summons to DCP New Delhi district and has sought an explanation in the matter, it said.

The women’s rights body has received a complaint regarding the alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers by Brijbhushan Singh, President of the Wrestling Federation of India.

One FIR has been registered against Brij Bhushan Singh under POSCO in the matter of sexual harassment with a minor girl while another FIR has been registered for sexual harassment with other complainants, the panel said.

There is a serious threat that’s why there is security,” he said.

Karnataka polls: ECI issues advisory to parties on print advertisements

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In view of complaints regarding “unverified” claims in political advertisements, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked all political parties and candidates to get “clearance” from the media certification and monitoring committee (MCMC) before publishing any advertisement in the print media on the date of polling and a day prior.

“No political party or candidate or any other organization or person shall publish any advertisement in the print media on poll day and one day prior to poll day unless the contents of political advertisement are got pre-certified by them from the MCMC committee at the State/District level, as the case may be,” a letter to the political parties dated May 7 said.

ECI on Sunday also held all major local newspapers in the state responsible for all matters including advertisements published in their newspapers.

Citing the Press Council of India’s norms for journalistic conduct, the ECI, in a letter said, “An editor shall be responsible for all matters, including advertisements, published in the newspaper. If responsibility is disclaimed, this shall be explicitly stated beforehand.”

It said to the political parties that instances of advertisements of an offending and misleading nature published in print media have been brought to the notice of the commission in the past.

“Such advertisements in the last stage of the election vitiate the entire election process,” ECI said.

In the advisory to the parties, the poll body also stressed on “clean and serious” campaign which is set to end on Monday for the Karnataka assembly elections.

The 224-seat Karnataka assembly will go to polls on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Texas Gov. Abbott calls for addressing mental health issues in wake of Texas mass shooting

    [ad_1]

But notably absent from Abbott’s call for legislation that would prevent gun violence in his state were demands for stricter gun control laws. The shooting Saturday at Allen Premium Outlets was the second recent mass shooting in the state, after a gunman shot and killed five people at a house in Cleveland, Texas, on April 28.

“People want a quick solution. The long-term solution here is to address the mental health issue,” Abbott said, noting that there have been mass shootings in states with varying levels of gun control.

Critics of the idea of treating gun violence largely as a public health issue have noted that the nation doesn’t have enough mental health professionals, mental health facilities or funding for either mass screening or treatment. Abbott said his state had added “almost $25 billion to address mental health” in recent years and will look to add more for Texas’ rural communities and for schoolchildren.

Meanwhile Sunday, Democratic State Sen. Roland Gutierrez slammed Abbott and other state leaders for their response to the shooting, particularly for the time it is taking for information about the shooting to be made public. Official information on the Allen shooting was still scarce Sunday morning.

“We are in a situation in this state where we’re — as if you’re living in communist Russia. The governor, the lieutenant governor, and people like them and their law enforcement agencies refuse to tell us the truth as to what’s going on here,” Gutierrez, who represents Uvalde, Texas, the site of a school shooting last year, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“It’s just a sad state of affairs that we’re living in. This is not the Texas miracle that Greg Abbott likes to call it,” he added.

  • Karnataka Veerashaiva Lingayat Forum backs Congress, issues official letter

Karnataka Veerashaiva Lingayat Forum backs Congress, issues official letter

    [ad_1]

The Karnataka Veerashaiva Lingayat forum has announced its support for the Congress party in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. The forum has issued an official letter extending its support to Congress, which is seen as a major boost for the party in the crucial Lingayat-dominated regions of the state.

On May 5, Congress leader and prominent Lingayat leader Jagadish Shettar met with seers of the community in Hubbali to seek their support for the party. Shettar, a former chief minister who recently joined Congress after being denied a ticket from the Bharatiya Janata Party, and Laxman Savadi, who formerly served as the deputy CM during the BS Yediyurappa-led BJP government, belong to the Lingayat community which is believed to have a crucial impact on electoral outcomes in the state.

The Lingayat votes have traditionally been a key determinant of electoral outcomes in the state. The community has traditionally sided with the BJP, and several Lingayat-dominated regions of the state are considered to be saffron strongholds. However, with the Karnataka Veerashaiva Lingayat forum extending its support to Congress, the political dynamics in the state could undergo a significant shift.

    MS Education Academy

Lingayats are largely concentrated in north Karnataka, in the districts of Belagavi, Dharwad, and Gadag. They also have a considerable presence in Bagalkot, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Bidar and Raichur. They inhabit vast swathes of South Karnataka, especially Bangalore, Mysore, and Mandya, in big numbers. The community is seen as a key demographic in the state, with their voting preferences often swaying election results.

The 224-seat Assembly polls are slated to take place in a single phase on May 10, and the results will be declared on May 13. The Congress party is hoping to make significant gains in Lingayat-dominated regions, and the support of the Veerashaiva Lingayat forum is expected to be a major factor in this regard.
