BJP-RSS playing with sentiments of Goa, Karnataka on Mhadei issue: Cong leader

    [ad_1]

Panaji: Stating that BJP and RSS is playing with sentiments of Goa and Karnataka (on Mhadei issue), the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Goa, Manickam Tagore, on Saturday said that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should show courage to condemn remarks of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Addressing a Press conference in Panaji, Manickam Tagore, who was appointed as Goa in-charge last month, said that for BJP more important is an election and for Congress rights of Goa people.

“BJP and RSS are not sensitive towards Goa’s rights, for them what is important are to win elections. They are playing politics with Karnataka and Goa,” he said, after holding, Political Affairs Committee meeting.

“Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should show courage to condemn remarks of Amit Shah, who has taken away the rights of people. Congress stands for Goa’s welfare and will be with the people. We will fight for the rights of the people,” he said.

“Congress has never created rifts between states. We have always dealt with such issues on an emotional level. BJP is doing this (creating rifts) to increase their seats in Karnataka during the Lok Sabha election. They are in a panic situation because they are losing seats there,” he said.

“Congress is making all preparations to come back to Goa in its original shape and we are rebuilding our organization. We want to win the hearts of people by winning both seats of Goa in the Lok Sabha election in 2024,” he said.

“I will be with Congress workers who are fighting against the corrupt BJP government led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant,” he said.

He said that Congress in Goa is building new leadership by respecting also ‘old’ (senior) leadership. “With the blessings of seniors, we will build Congress again,” he said.

During a rally in Belagavi on January 28, Shah said: “Sonia Gandhi during a speech in Goa in the year 2007 said that the Congress government will not allow Mhadei water diversion to Karnataka. In 2022, Congress in their manifesto stated that Karnataka will not get a single drop of water from Mhadei. Today, I am here to tell you that the BJP at the Centre has resolved the long dispute between Goa and Karnataka over Mhadei and allowed the diversion of Mhadei to Karnataka to satisfy the thirst of farmers of many districts.”

Cong leader Jairam Ramesh takes dig at PM Modi over Adani issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed on Friday that a senior government official has described the recent developments involving the Adani Group as a “storm in a tea cup” and said the cup belongs to none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“A responsible senior official has dismissed the Adani affair as a storm in a tea cup. Well, he accepts it as a storm. As for the tea cup, it is of none other than the PM himself. No ordinary tea cup!” the former Union minister wrote on Twitter.

His remarks came after the opposition stepped up its attack on the BJP-led government over the Adani issue and slammed it for not taking action against the business conglomerate.

US-based short seller Hindenburg Research has accused the Adani Group of stock manipulation and accounting fraud. The conglomerate, led by industrialist Gautam Adani, has denied any wrongdoing and threatened to sue Hindenburg.

The opposition stalled the proceedings in both houses of Parliament for the second straight day on Friday, demanding a discussion on the issue and a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe or a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.

LIC, SBI’s exposure within permitted limits: Sitharaman on Adani issue

    [ad_1]

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday responded to the Adani-Hindenburg issue in an interview with News18, citing the statements of the SBI and the LIC.

She also reiterated that their exposure to Adani Group stocks is well within permitted limits and that they are still profitable despite falling valuations.

Amid continued disruptions in both houses of Parliament over US-based research firm Hindenburg’s allegations against Adani group, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Friday said that the government has nothing to do with the matter and the opposition is raising it as it is bereft of issues.

Speaking to reporters in Parliament, Joshi, when asked about the government’s stand on the Adani group issue, said that the government has got nothing to do with the matter.

“Government has nothing to do with it (Adani group issue)… The opposition is disrupting the house as it has no other issues,” the Parliamentary Affairs minister said.

Adani issue: RS, LS adjourned till 2.30 pm as Oppn demands discussion

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Both Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned on Friday till 2.30 pm following an uproar by the opposition members demanding a discussion on the Adani issue.

    In Rajya Sabha

Soon after the house met for the day, RS Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected the 15 adjournment notices filed by members of various opposition parties to discuss the Adani group issue in the wake of allegations made against the conglomerate by a US-based short seller.

The chairman urged members of the Rajya Sabha to maintain order and allow the listed business of the House to be taken up. But unrelenting opposition members raised an uproar over the rejection of their adjournment notices.

Dhankhar told the protesting members that Parliament is the essence and the North Star of democracy. It is a place for discussion and deliberation and not a place of disturbance, he said.

“I have received 15 notices under Rule 267 from different members…I have gone through all the notices. I am unable to accede to them as these are not fulfilling the requirements of rule 267,” the chairman said, leading to uproar from opposition members.

He then adjourned the house till 2.30 pm, as opposition members continued to cause uproar.

    In Lok Sabha

Soon after the House met for the day, opposition members were on their feet shouting slogans and demanding a probe into the tanking of the Adani Group scrips and sought a probe into the business practices of the corporate giant.

Speaker Om Birla appealed to members to participate in the discussions during the Question Hour, which he termed as significant.

He said the House will take up the Motion of Thanks to the president for her address at the beginning of the Budget session.

Birla said as it was the first address to the joint sitting of the House by the country’s first tribal woman president, all members should participate in it.

He said he was ready to give the opposition enough time to raise their issues if they give proper notice.

However, an unrelenting opposition continued their protests and sloganeering, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings till 2 pm.

Adani Group stocks have taken a beating on the bourses after the US short-seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations last week in its report, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation at the Gautam Adani-led group, which has denied the charges.

The market losses of the Adani Group have risen to nearly USD 103 billion (about Rs 8.5 lakh crore).

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Sixteen opposition parties on Friday came together to chalk out a strategy in Parliament on the Hindenburg-Adani issue.

The parties met at the chamber of Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of Opposition, in Parliament premises.

Apart from the Congress, the DMK, Samajwadi Party (SP), AAP, BRS, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackrey group), RJD, JD(U), CPI(M), CPI, NCP, NC, IUML, Kerala Congress (Jose Mani), Kerala Congress (Thomas), and RSP attended the opposition parties meeting.

The joint opposition demand is to constitute a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) to probe the loss of money to the Public Sector Banks and LIC.

On Thursday, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned as the opposition demanded an investigation by the JPC on the new revelations.

Kharge had said on Thursday: “We demand an investigation by the JPC on the issue and will raise the demand inside Parliament. We demand that a JPC should be constituted to go into the alleged irregularities.”

The opposition also alleged that the proceedings of both Houses of Parliament were adjourned to stop them from raising the Adani issue.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh had said: “Both Houses of Parliament adjourned today till 2 p.m. because Govt did not agree to combined Opposition demand for an investigation into forced investments by LIC, SBI & other public institutions that have lost huge value in recent days endangering savings of crores of Indians.”

Azad calls on Shah, takes up land eviction issue in J&K

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chairman, Democratic Azad Party (DAP) met Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to take up the land eviction issue, said the party on Thursday.

During the meeting, which took place on Wednesday, Azad apprised Shah of the situation of serious ‘unrest and uncertainty’ prevailing among the public following the circular of eviction issued by the UT administration, a statement by the DAP mentioned.

The circular directs all Deputy Commissioners to remove encroachments on state land, including Roshni and Kacharai.

“Ghulam Nabi Azad requested the Home Minister that the majority of occupants holding small lands and have constructed houses for the last few decades are migrants and are mostly victims of militancy, as well as victims of abnormal situations arising from time to time, being a border state.

“The origin of these shelters/residential houses on state-kacharai and Roshni lands appears to have taken place first in 1947 and then in the 1962 and 1971 war period, and subsequently during the post-militancy period. This is also a fact that the governments provided road connectivity, supply of water and electricity, schools, anganwadi centres and other welfare schemes, including health related facilities to these houses from time to time which implicitly indicates that successive state governments in a way have recognised these constructions.”

The statement said Azad requested the home minister that at least poor people having small holdings of land and houses should be spared from the eviction drive.

“The Home Minister assured Azad that small land holders will not be harassed. It is worthwhile to mention here that two weeks earlier Azad had taken up the same issue with Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha also, who too had assured to do the needful with cogent land policy to small land holders sympathetically,” the statement added.

All-party meet ahead of Budget Session: Oppn raises Adani issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The government on Monday said it was willing to discuss every issue under rules during the Budget Session of Parliament and sought the support of the Opposition in running the proceedings smoothly.

Briefing the media after an all-party meeting convened by the government ahead of the Budget Session beginning Tuesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the government was willing to discuss every issue in Parliament under rules. “We seek Opposition’s cooperation” in running the House smoothly.

At the meet, Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh, RJD’s Manoj Jha, DMK, Left parties and others raised the Adani issue and sought discussion on it in Parliament during the session.

The US-based short seller Hindenburg Research has accused the Adani Group of wrongdoing like stock manipulation. The company has dismissed the allegations as “nothing but a lie”.

The YSR Congress demanded a nationwide caste-based economic census at the meet.

It is necessary to know the economic status of backward castes who are “lagging behind” on social and development indicators, the party said.

YSR Congress leader Vijaysai Reddy said backward castes are over 50 per cent of the total population and the census will help find their economic status.

The ruling party in Andhra Pradesh has joined the likes of the JD(U) and the RJD, both of which have demanded a caste census.

The grand alliance government in Bihar has rolled out a state-wide caste survey.

Reddy said his party also demanded the passage of the women quota bill for ensuring reservation for them in Parliament.

Parties including the TRS, TMC and the BJD also supported the demand.

The Budget Session will begin from January 31 with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The session will have 27 sittings and will continue till April 6 with a month-long recess to examine the budget papers.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget on February 1.

The first part of the Budget Session will conclude on February 14.

Parliament will reconvene on March 12 for the second part of the Budget Session.
