Pulwama widows protest: Raj CM accuses BJP of politicising issue

    [ad_1]

Following Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirodi Lal Meena’s arrest on Friday, chief minister Ashok Gehlot accused the former of politicizing the issue regarding the demands brought up by widows of Pulwama attack martyrs.

On Saturday BJP workers thronged Ghelot’s residence. They threw stones at police barricades which were retaliated by lathi-charge by the cops.

The Pulwama widows protests have been going on for the last two weeks. The widows are demanding that the State grant government jobs to extended family members along with immediate ones on the basis of compassionate grounds.

Their other demands include construction of roads and installation of statues of the martyrs in their villages.

When asked about the lathicharge, senior BJP leader Sachin Pilot the issue needs to be dealt with sensitivity.

“There should not be a false message going outside that the government is not ready to listen to the widows of our martyrs. Demands such as construction of roads, erecting houses, and installing statues are doable. However, it is another thing that we accept all their demands,” Pilot said.

On Friday morning, the widows were shifted to nearby hospitals when they started protesting in front of Pilot’s residence in Jaipur.

  • ‘Attacks on temples’: PM Modi raises issue with Aus PM Anthony Albanese

‘Attacks on temples’: PM Modi raises issue with Aus PM Anthony Albanese

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday raised with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese the issue of recent attacks on temples in Australia even as the two leaders focused on concluding an ambitious trade pact by this year and bolster security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific during their first summit talks.

The two sides inked four agreements providing for cooperation in areas of sports, innovation, audio-visual production and solar power following the talks between Modi and Albanese.

The discussions were focused on boosting cooperation in clean energy, trade and investment, defence and security, critical minerals, migration and mobility, supply chains, education, culture and sports.

In his media statement, Modi said it is a matter of regret that reports of attacks on temples have come regularly from Australia over the past few weeks and that it is natural that such news worries everyone in India.

“It is a matter of regret that reports of attacks on temples have come regularly from Australia over the past few weeks. It is natural that such news worries everyone in India, disturbs our mind,” Modi said in the presence of Albanese.

“I conveyed these feelings and concerns to Prime Minister Albanese and he has assured me that the safety of the Indian community is of special priority for him. Our teams will be in regular contact on this matter, and will cooperate as much as possible,” he said.

In his comments, Albanese said Modi and he agreed on concluding the India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) as soon as possible.

“I am hopeful that we will be able to finalise it this year,” the Australian prime minister, who is on a three-day visit to India, said.

Last year, India and Australia finalised the Economic Cooperation Trade Agreement (ECTA) and it came into force in December last. The two sides are now working on the CECA.

Modi said the bilateral security cooperation is an important pillar of India-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership.

“Today we discussed maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, and enhancing mutual defence and security cooperation,” he said.

It is understood that concerns over China’s increasing military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific figured in the discussions.

“In the field of defence, we have made remarkable agreements in the last few years, including logistics support for each other’s militaries. There is also regular and useful exchange of information between our security agencies, and we discussed further strengthening this,” Modi said.

The prime minister also noted that mutual cooperation to develop reliable and strong global supply chains also figured in the discussions.

In his remarks, Albanese described his country’s relationship with India as “multi-faceted” and said he was looking forward to hosting Modi in Australia for the Quad leaders’ summit in May and then returning to India in September for the G20 summit.

“Prime Minister Modi and I discussed the strength of our economic relationship demonstrated by the entry into force of the landmark India Australia economic cooperation and trade agreement,” he said.

On the comprehensive economic cooperation agreement, he said this “transformational deal” will realise the full potential of the bilateral economic relationship.

“I am proud of the existing cooperation between Australia and India on solar and hydrogen, two technologies that are critical to our energy transition goals and the opportunities for us to work more closely to secure critical mineral supply chains,” Albanese said.

“I’m pleased that today we have exchanged terms of references for the Australia India Solar Task force,” he said.

The visiting leader said Modi and he discussed the increasingly uncertain global security environment and committed to strengthening the Australia India defence and security partnership to address shared challenges as well as to work towards an open, stable and prosperous Indo Pacific.

“I welcome increased defence information sharing between Australia and India, including in the maritime domain,” he said.

Albanese said Australia is honoured to be hosting the Malabar naval exercise this year.

“I am also pleased to report that officials have made significant progress on a new migration and mobility partnership arrangement. This arrangement will promote and support the mobility of students, graduates, academic researchers, business people and other professionals,” he said.

“I am pleased to have exchanged a revised sports memorandum of understanding today which will promote cooperation between our sport-loving nations, including recognising equality, diversity and inclusion in sports,” he said.

  • Iran urges IAEA to adopt ‘professional’ approach to Iranian nuclear issue

Iran urges IAEA to adopt ‘professional’ approach to Iranian nuclear issue

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has said that he hopes the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can adopt a “professional” approach to the Iranian nuclear issue and prevent certain countries from affecting the nuclear watchdog’s decisions.

Raisi made the remarks on Saturday in a meeting with visiting Director General of the IAEA Rafael Grossi in the capital Tehran, according to a report on the website of the president’s office.

Countries like Israel and the US use the nuclear issue as an “excuse” to further pressure the Iranian people, said the President, pointing out that it was the US that violated the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, Xinhua news agency reported.

Iran has had “the highest level” of cooperation with the IAEA, expects the agency to tell the truth about Iran’s nuclear programme as well the country’s commitment ot its regulations, he noted.

Meanwhile, the IAEA Chief expressed pleasure at visiting Iran and meeting the country’s President, saying the IAEA’s team led by himself had “constructive and positive” meetings with the Iranian side, according to the report.

Grossi arrived in Tehran on Friday for a two-day visit, during which he also held talks with Mohammad Eslami, President of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

In recent months, the IAEA has criticised Iran for its lack of cooperation with the agency.

In November 2020, the IAEA’s Board of Governors passed a resolution proposed by the US, Britain, France and Germany that called on Iran to collaborate with the agency’s investigators regarding the alleged “traces of uranium” at a number of its “undeclared” sites.

Iran has repeatedly rejected such allegations and emphasised the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme.

  • Indian banks to issue bonds to maintain capital levels: CARE Ratings

Indian banks to issue bonds to maintain capital levels: CARE Ratings

    [ad_1]

Chennai: With credit off-take increasing, Indian banks are expected to issue bonds to maintain their capital levels and support their advances while cost of funds — deposits and borrowings are likely to increase, said CARE Ratings.

“To support credit-off take, banks are expected to shore up their liability franchise by raising capital (AT1 bonds, other debt instruments such as infrastructure bonds) and deposits. The market has been facing lower liquidity and elevated inflation, hence borrowing costs for deposits and the cost of raising capital are expected to increase,” the credit rating agency said in a report.

The banks are increasing their interest rates for deposits and plans for bonds issue. Further, profitability is also expected to support the capital base of the banks. Overall, the scheduled commercial banks (SCB) are expected to remain adequately capitalised in the near term.

All SCBs have maintained their Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) greater than the minimum required level for Q3FY23. The median CAR and Common Equity Tier 1 (CET-1) ratio of SCBs witnessed a rise in Q3FY23 over Q3FY22 and Q3FY21, the report notes.

According to CARE Ratings, the net profit of SCBs grew by 45 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to Rs 0.65 lakh crore in Q3FY23 driven by a higher pre-provisioning operating profit (PPOP) growth compared to a lower growth in provisions.

The net interest income growth and stability in non-interest income helped PPOP to grow by 28.5 per cent y-o-y to Rs 1.30 lakh crore in Q3Y23. Meanwhile, provisions rose by 9.1 per cent to Rs 0.38 lakh crore.

Public sector banks’ net profit rose by 64.3 per cent y-o-y to Rs 0.29 lakh crore in Q3FY23, meanwhile private sector banks’ grew by 32.2 per cent y-o-y to reach Rs 0.35 lakh crore in Q3FY23, the report added.

Return on Assets of SCBs improved by 28 bps y-o-y to 1.23 per cent. At present, banks are in a better position after navigating the Covid period and managing mounted NPAs.

Healthy credit growth, improvement in asset quality, and lower growth in provisions due to lower incremental slippages and reduction in restructuring books are expected to generate healthy net profit growth.

  • Rahul Gandhi continues to attack PM over Adani issue

Rahul Gandhi continues to attack PM over Adani issue

    [ad_1]

Shillong: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday continued his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his relationship with the Adani group, claiming that whenever the PM goes abroad, the conglomerate gets a “gift”.

Addressing an election rally here, Gandhi asserted that the group has access to every single business because its head Gautam Adani is close to the prime minister.

Claiming that television channels and newspapers did not properly cover his speech in Lok Sabha on this subject, he alleged that the media is in the hands of the powerful and close aides of the prime minister.

“Whenever the PM goes abroad, Mr Adani gets a gift. PM goes to Bangladesh, Mr Adani gets a gift. PM goes to Australia, Mr Adani gets a gift. PM goes to Sri Lanka, Mr Adani gets a gift. PM goes to Sri Lanka, Mr Adani gets a gift,” Gandhi said, referring to contracts bagged by the ports-to-energy conglomerate in those countries.

One businessman became the second richest man in the world from the 609th in a matter of years, the Congress leader said without naming Adani.

“He (Adani) owns ports, airports; he does constructions; he works for the defence sector; he dominates the apple trade in Himachal Pradesh,” Gandhi said.

The former Congress president claimed that the scale of corruption at the Centre is probably “never ever seen” in Indian history.

Gandhi said he had asked the PM to disclose his relationship with Adani in a Lok Sabha speech earlier this month, but got no reply.

“My speech was nowhere to be seen. It was not visible in the media, not heard about in newspapers and not seen in channels. The reason is the media of this country is completely controlled by two or three large industrialists who have a good relationship with the PM,” he said.

On Monday also, Gandhi alleged that the billionaire industrialist benefited from the central government’s “magic” and asserted that he was not against businesses but the creation of monopolies.

Gandhi and the Congress party have been attacking the prime minister and the government over the growth of the Adani group during the BJP rule and have claimed that this is happening due to the businessman’s proximity to the party and its leadership.

The BJP had slammed the allegations as baseless and reminded the opposition party that there were big scams when the Congress-led UPA was in power that tarnished the image of the country.

Stating that he had come to learn about the lack of unemployment across the country during his recent 4000 km Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress leader said he came to know how the common people are in pain because of rising prices of petrol, diesel, gas cylinders and food products.

The Congress party is committed to fight against issues concerning Indians – price rise, control of the country’s wealth in the hands of one or two persons, unemployment and the “hatred that the BJP is spreading”, Gandhi said.

  • TSBIE to issue fresh tender for digital evaluation of answer scripts

TSBIE to issue fresh tender for digital evaluation of answer scripts

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) will be issuing a fresh tender for the onscreen digital evaluation of the Intermediate examinations answer scripts.

“The Intermediate Public Examination and Intermediate Public Advanced Supplementary Examination papers including the re-verification of answer scripts will now be evaluated digitally” held the Board.

However, the move was recently opposed by the Student Federation of India (SFI) and teachers’ organisations in the state, saying that nobody was informed about the decision and the evaluators had not been trained to evaluate the answer sheets of over 25 lakh students.

The new declaration came on Monday after the board received participation from only one company in the tender issued earlier.

The office opened the technical proposals of the said tender by 3 pm on Monday and found that only one firm, Magnetic Infotech Private Limited, participated in the tender.

“It is observed that the firm Coempt Edutek Private Limited has not participated in the tender, which shows that the allegations made by under-suspension junior lecturer Dr P Madhusudan Reddy is baseless and defamatory,” TSBIE said.

The last date for submission of the tender issued by the TSBIE earlier in January through e-procurement was February 13.

The onscreen digital evaluation system involves scanning and uploading answer sheets of the students on a software platform where lecturers can evaluate by reading on a computer screen and award marks digitally.

Assam: AAP holds protest, demands JPC probe into Adani-Hindenburg issue

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday staged a protest here, demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the allegations of malpractices against the Adani group in the Hindenburg Research report.

Workers of the party tried to march towards the Assam BJP headquarters on National Highway-27 in the Basistha area but were stopped by the police around 50 metres away from the place.

“We picked up many protesters and took them in a bus to the designated dharna site at Chachal. They were released there,” a senior police officer said.

“We demand a JPC probe into the latest allegations of malpractices in Adani stocks,” an AAP member said.

The protesters also raised slogans against the ruling BJP and billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani.

Adani Group stocks had taken a beating on the bourses after the US-based Hindenburg Research made several allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation.

The Gautam Adani-led group has dismissed the allegations.

The opposition parties have alleged that the meltdown in Adani Group shares is a scam that involves common people’s money as “LIC and SBI have invested in them”.

These parties have also been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the issue.
