Biden calls Israeli PM after terrorist attack in Jerusalem

Washington: US President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, condemning what he called a “horrific terrorist attack” outside a Jerusalem synagogue in which a Palestinian gunman killed at least seven people.

President Biden, who called Netanyahu on Friday, also offered support to Israel’s government and people following the attack.

The incident came amid spiralling tensions and violence between Israel and the Palestinians.

The shooting took place on Friday evening in the northern part of East Jerusalem, a day after nine Palestinians were killed during an Israel Defence Forces raid in the West Bank city of Jenin.

During the call, the President made clear that this was an attack against the civilised world.

“He offered all appropriate means of support to the Government and People of Israel over the coming days,” the White House said in a readout of the call.

“The President stressed the iron-clad US commitment to Israel’s security, and agreed that his team would remain in constant touch with their Israeli counterparts,” the White House said.

In a separate statement, US Secretary of State Tony Blinken condemned in the strongest terms “the horrific terrorist attack” that occurred today outside of a synagogue in Jerusalem.

“We mourn those killed in the attack, and our thoughts are with the injured, including children. The notion of people being targeted as they leave a house of worship is abhorrent. It is particularly tragic that this attack occurred on International Holocaust Remembrance Day,” he said.

The United States will extend our full support to the Government and people of Israel.

“Accordingly, the President has directed his national security team to engage immediately with Israeli counterparts to offer all appropriate support in assisting the wounded and bringing the perpetrators of this horrible crime to justice,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar also condemned the terrorist attack in Jerusalem.

“My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the global Jewish community. This kind of senseless violence is heartbreaking,” he said.

Over 12K Israeli administrative detention orders issued in 9 yrs

    [ad_1]

The Israeli authorities have issued more than 12,000 administrative detention orders (without charge) against Palestinian detainees over the past nine years.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club (PPC) said in a statement on Wednesday, the highest percentage of issuance of administrative detention orders was in 2022.

In 2022, the number of administrative detention orders reached 2,409 orders, and the highest rate was in December, and the number of orders reached 315.

At the end of 2022, there were 866 administrative detainees in Israeli prisons, including two women, seven children, and a 76-year-old man.

According to PPC, a staggering 80 per cent of administrative detainees are ex-prisoners.

The Israeli occupation authorities renewed the arrest of Palestinian figures such as Nidal Abu Akar, Thaer Halahleh, Ghassan Zawaheereh and Saleh al Je’edi. Although she was never charged with any crime and has not been brought to trial, Shorouq Al-Badan of Bethlehem has had her detention renewed. She has been under administrative detention since 2019.

The Israeli authorities use administrative detention for anyone who has a “vanguard role on the social, cognitive, and political level in the Palestinian arena, in addition to being a policy of revenge and collective punishment.”

It is noteworthy that Israel detains 4,700 Palestinians in its prisons, including 150 children and 33 women, and 600 prisoners suffering from diseases of various degrees, and in need of follow-up, health care and urgent medical interventions, including 24 prisoners suffering from cancer and tumors.

Arab League, Egypt condemn deadly Israeli raid in West Bank

    [ad_1]

Cairo: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned in the “strongest terms” an Israeli raid on Jenin city and Jenin refugee camp that reportedly killed at least nine Palestinians.

Aboul Gheit follows the development in the occupied territories with great concern and calls for the international community to protect the Palestinian people, Xinhua news agency reported, citing an Arab League statement.

The state of indifference encourages the occupying forces to commit more crimes under the leadership of a government with hardline plans, Gheit said.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the raids on the Palestinian cities, which threaten the security in the West Bank, must stop immediately.

The ministry warned against the dangerous repercussions of such assaults on the security and stability of the occupied territories.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, Israeli soldiers on Thursday “killed at least nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman, and injured 20 others, four of whom are in critical conditions, in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank”.

The Palestinian authorities welcomed the announcement by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that it had received a request from the United Nations (UN) to issue an advisory opinion on the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, Anadolu Agency reported.

In a statement on Saturday, the Palestinian foreign ministry said, “The State of Palestine welcomes the transfer of the General Secretariat of the United Nations to the General Assembly’s request to the International Court of Justice, to obtain an opinion on the continuation of the Israeli occupation and the relevant international obligations.”

It stated that Palestine had received an official letter from the Registrar of the International Court of Justice, Philip Gauter, informing the State of Palestine and other countries concerned to appear before the court, and had officially received the referral of the decision of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry called on all countries to submit their “legal statements” to the International Court of Justice on the legitimacy of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.

On Friday, January 20, International Justice announced that it had received an official request from the United Nations General Assembly to express an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories.

  • Israeli PM dismisses key minister, ally after court order

Israeli PM dismisses key minister, ally after court order

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed a senior cabinet ally to comply with a Supreme Court ruling that disqualified the minister from serving.

Netanyahu on Sunday announced he is firing Aryeh Deri, the minister of health and minister of interior affairs, during his weekly cabinet meeting, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement by the Prime Minister’s office.

The move follows a Supreme Court ruling on Wednesday that Deri, an influential and veteran leader of the ultra-Orthodox party Shas, cannot serve as a minister due to a conviction in February 2022 over tax fraud.

“I am forced, with a heavy heart, great sorrow and a very difficult feeling, to remove you from your position as a minister in the government,” Netanyahu wrote in a dismissal letter to Deri.

The Supreme Court’s decision “ignores the people’s will,” Netanyahu told Deri. “I intend to find any legal way for you to continue to contribute to the state of Israel,” Netanyahu said.

Deri said in a statement after the meeting that he would continue to serve as the leader of the Shas party and help the government to advance its agenda, including a controversial judiciary reform to weaken the Supreme Court.

Deri’s Shas became the third-largest party in the parliament after winning 11 seats in parliamentary elections in November. If Netanyahu loses its support, he might lose his majority in the parliament as his far-right coalition only has 64 seats in the 120-seat parliament.

The legal decision deepens an already unprecedented rift between the new hard-right government and the judiciary over the government’s reform plan to weaken the Supreme Court.

On Saturday, at least 120,000 Israelis, as estimated by police, protested in Tel Aviv and other cities against the legal overhaul which they claim will undermine the autonomy of the courts and threaten Israel’s democracy.
