The Israeli occupation authorities demolished 290 Palestinian homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the first quarter of 2023.

This came in a report issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the occupied Palestinian territory.

As a result, 413 people—including 194 children—have been forced to flee their homes, while more than 11,000 others have had difficulties with their access to services or their ability to support themselves.

The number of structures targeted in the first quarter of 2023 increased by 46 per cent compared to the same period in 2022, which already saw the highest number of demolitions recorded in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since 2016.

The incident that led to the demolition of most of the buildings took place on February 27 in the town of Livjem in Nablus, when 15 buildings were demolished under the pretext of not having the necessary permits.

It is reported that, the incident that affected the largest number of people occurred on January 23, when the Israeli authorities shut down a water well under construction in Habla (Qalqilya) in Area B, without prior notification.

As a result, a total of 8,000 Palestinians from 1,300 families in three nearby villages were affected.

Israel hands over bodies of 3 Palestinians killed in March

    [ad_1]

Ramallah: The Israeli army has handed over the bodies of three Palestinians who were killed by Israeli soldiers more than 50 days ago to the Palestinian side, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said in a statement.

In coordination with the Palestinian liaison office of security coordination with Israel, the Israeli army on Friday handed the bodies over to the Palestinian side at an Israeli army checkpoint near the northern West Bank city of Nablus, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the statement.

The Palestinian WAFA news agency identified the victims as Odai Shami, Jihad Shami, and Mohammad Dabik, who were killed by Israeli soldiers on March 12 while they were in a car close to the Israeli military checkpoint of Sarra near Nablus. Their bodies were taken away by the Israeli soldiers ever since.

According to statistics released by the Palestinian Authority in November last year, Israel is withholding the bodies of more than 110 Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers since 2015, including 10 minors, eight prisoners, and three women.

The Palestinian Authority also said 256 Palestinians who have been killed in the conflicts with Israel since 1967 were buried at a cemetery in northern Israel.

In the past few months, the Israeli army has carried out daily raids on Palestinian towns, villages, and refugee camps, mainly in the northern West Bank. Israelis claim that they want to arrest Palestinian militants wanted by Israeli security forces.

According to official Palestinian figures, the tension between Israelis and the Palestinians has killed more than 100 Palestinians since January. Meanwhile, Israeli sources said that 19 Israelis were killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians in Israel and the West Bank.

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel has launched a sustainable energy transition plan in the Gaza envelope area seven km from the Gazan border in southwestern Israel, the country’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure said.

The plan is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen civil resilience in the region, which has for many years suffered from rocket and missile attacks, Xinhua news agency reported.

With an investment of five million shekels ($1.38 million), the plan will promote projects of energy efficiency, energy management, storage, and transportation, and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy in household and business sectors in the region.

Facilities will also be planned for optimising solar power generation in agricultural areas in the border towns.

In addition, the electricity network in the region will be upgraded with the establishment of new electricity facilities.

  • The week around the world in 20 pictures

Protesters carry a banner as they attend a mass ‘independence party’ in a demonstration against Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his nationalist coalition government’s judicial overhaul. The fight over the judicial changes ‘transcends issues of left and right, and comes down to public distrust in government’, said one of the architects of the plans, Simcha Rothman.

Israel marks 75th Independence Day amid protests

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel marked its 75th Independence Day amid protests and political divisions between supporters and opponents of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “contentious plan to overhaul the judiciary”.

The celebration on Tuesday began at sundown, with an official torch-lighting ceremony held at the Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. As Netanyahu spoke at the state ceremony for the fallen soldiers at Mount Herzl, protesters rallied outside the site, Xinhua news agency reported.

Tens of thousands of Israelis rallied in the city of Tel Aviv for what the organisers called an “Independence Party” to protest the overhaul plan. The Tel Aviv police blocked parts of the Ayalon Highway and several main streets.

Over the past few days, Netanyahu and opposition leaders called for putting their differences aside. However, the day was still marked by clashes as bereaved families laid wreaths and lit candles at cemeteries across Israel.

In Beersheba, where hardline National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir spoke, clashes erupted between some bereaved families and the supporters of the judicial reforms.

“Ben-Gvir came here despite repeated calls by bereaved families over the past days, asking him not to do so. It a disgraceful provocation that shows no respect for our fallen sons,” Shaula Levi, a bereaved mother, told Channel 12 TV news.

In the Druze town of Isfiya in northern Israel, protesters prevented Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel from entering the military cemetery. Gamliel had to leave without delivering her scheduled speech.

The far-right government’s plan to “overhaul” the judicial system has torn apart the Israeli society, sparking mass weekly demonstrations over the past four months.

Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, but it marks the Independence Day on different dates every year based on the Hebrew calendar.

Israel voices ‘concern’ over conflict in Sudan

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel has said it was “following with concern” the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan.

“Israel wants stability and security for Sudan,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lior Haiat wrote on Twitter, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Israel calls on all parties to refrain from violence and to return to the path of internal reconciliation, in order to conclude the process of governmental transition with a large consensus,” the spokesman wrote.

The armed clashes that erupted in Khartoum on Saturday left at least 97 people dead and hundreds of others injured.

The conflict is expected to postpone the signing of a deal to normalize ties between Israel and Sudan, which is expected to take place after the transfer of power in Sudan to a civilian government, according to commentators on state-owned Kan TV news.

Sudan first agreed to normalise ties with Israel in 2020. After paying a visit to Sudanese capital of Khartoum in February, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said the final normalization deal is expected to be signed by the end of 2023.

Meteor explodes over Israel in daylight

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: The Israeli Astronomical Association (IAA) has reported a bolide explosion seen in daylight in the country’s sky.

The bolide, a particularly bright meteor, was seen flashing across the sky at 17:16 local time (14:16 GMT), according to reports, photos, and videos received at the IAA released on Saturday.

Igal Pat-El, a member of the International Astronomical Union, told Xinhua that according to the observed colours, it was a meteorite made of stone, probably tens of centimetre long at most, which completely disintegrated in the air and did not reach the ground.

    MS Education Academy

“Meteors are observed every night, but seeing one from an inhabited place, in daylight, and over Israel is very rare,” he added as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.

Meteor is the scientific name for the popular term “falling star,” a flash of light that can usually be seen in the night sky when interplanetary material enters Earth’s atmosphere, ignites from the friction and leaves behind a bright trail.

  • Israel bans non-Muslims from Al-Aqsa Mosque for rest of Ramzan

Israel bans non-Muslims from Al-Aqsa Mosque for rest of Ramzan

    [ad_1]

Israel has banned visits by Jews and tourists to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound after a wave of unrest in the holy city of Jerusalem until the end of Ramzan.

A statement issued by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday said, “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant & National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir completed a comprehensive assessment with heads of the security services on the security situation in Israel, including Judea and Samaria, Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.”

It was decided to prevent Jewish visitors and tourists from entering the Temple Mount until the end of Ramzan, “based on the unanimous recommendation of Defense Minister and Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy, Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, and police chief Yaakov Shabtai.”

    MS Education Academy

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said, in a statement to his office, that “the prime minister’s decision is a grave mistake that will not bring calm, but may only lead to an escalation of the situation.”

He added that the absence of Jews in Al-Aqsa Mosque “will lead to a reduction in the remaining police force in the place, which will create a fertile ground for huge demonstrations to incite the killing of Jews, and even the scenario of throwing stones at Jewish worshipers at the Western Wall.”

Earlier on Tuesday, 788 Israeli settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque, under heavy police protection, on the occasion of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Since last week, occupied Jerusalem has been witnessing tension after the Israeli police stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque at night, and prevented worshipers from performing Itikaf in it.

Settlement groups called for large-scale storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque on the occasion of the Jewish Passover holiday, which continues until Wednesday.

The repeated storming of Al-Aqsa led to security tension and clashes throughout the Palestinian territories and the Arab regions of Israel.

Israel launches airstrikes in Syria after rocket attacks

    [ad_1]

Tel Aviv: Israel carried out artillery strikes in southern Syria, in response to six rockets that were launched from its Islamic neighbour, The Times of Israel reported citing Israel Defence Force.

The IDF did not immediately provide further details on the strikes.

Earlier, 3 more rockets were launched from southern Syria at Israeli towns in the Golan Heights, the Israel Defense Forces said. This came hours after another three rockets were launched from Syria at the Golan, reported The Times of Israel.

    MS Education Academy

On Saturday night, the focus shifted to Jerusalem’s Old City as security forces fear that further unrest could break out on Sunday when Jewish worshipers are expected to flock to the Western Wall for the priestly blessings that take place on Passover, reported Jerusalem Post.

Jewish visitors are also expected to ascend the Temple Mount, known to Muslims as al-Haram al-Sharif. An additional 2,300 police troops have been deployed throughout the city. “Israel is taking every measure to ensure that Muslims, Jews and Christians can celebrate Ramadan, Passover and Easter peacefully,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Despite appeals for restraint, violence has surged since Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque on Wednesday after they said Palestinians barricaded themselves inside.

Israel bombarded both Gaza and Lebanon in response to rocket fire by Palestinian militants. The unrest comes as the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramzan, Jewish Passover, and Christian Easter coincide.

By Saturday night, it appeared as if an uneasy calm had been restored, with security forces still braced not just for violence along those borders as well as increased Israeli-Palestinian violence, reported Jerusalem Post.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant briefed US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on the security situation on Saturday night, detailing efforts to “thwart terrorism and respond effectively to any threat toward Israeli citizens and troops,” his office said.

“Gallant also raised the defence establishment’s efforts to enable freedom of prayer at the Temple Mount, which is hijacked by groups of extreme rioters,” his office added President Isaac Herzog said Israel was “firmly committed to preserving the status quo at the holy sites in general and on the Temple Mount in particular” in a telephonic conversation he had with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Netanyahu said last week claimed Iran is behind the latest spiral in violence in Israel, a point Herzog underscored in his conversation with Erdogan.

“Iran, by means of its proxies, including Hamas, is leading a campaign on several fronts with the aim of undermining regional stability and is using terrorism based on religious incitement, focusing on the situation in Jerusalem,” Herzog said.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati issued a statement condemning any military operations from its territory that threatened stability but there was no immediate comment from Hezbollah, reported Jerusalem Post.

Militants in Syria fire 3 rockets toward Israel: Army

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Militants in Syria fired three rockets toward northern Israel on Saturday night, Israel’s military said, in a rare attack from Syria amid escalating tension in the region.

According to a statement released by the army, only one of the rockets crossed into the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights and landed in an open area, Xinhua news agency reported.

It triggered sirens in the northern community of Moshav Meitsar, however, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The Israeli army on Thursday and Friday struck southern Lebanon and Gaza Strip as Israel accused Hamas and other militant groups of being responsible for firing dozens of rockets at Israel.

The latest tension was triggered by Israeli raids of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, Muslims’ third holiest site, during a sensitive holiday time as Muslims were observing the holy month of Ramadan with prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and Jews were commemorating the Passover holiday.
