    Iraqi PM Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani inaugurates Karbala oil refinery

    Baghdad: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has inaugurated the Karbala oil refinery which was built with a production capacity of 140,000 barrels per day, according to a statement from his office.

    The refinery, located in the south of Karbala City, nearly 110 km south of Baghdad, includes 33 operational, service, and storage units, as well as a warehouse and a station for pumping products to external depots and gas filling stations, Xinhua news agency reported.

    The refinery also includes a power station with the capacity to produce 200 megawatts of electricity, and is supplied with crude oil through a pipeline from the southern oil fields in Basra, said the statement.

    The refinery is designed to produce gasoline, jet fuel, solid sulfur, and cooking gas to help meet the growing domestic demand for oil derivatives.

    Egyptian president, Iraqi PM meet on bilateral, regional affairs

    Cairo: Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani here to discuss issues of mutual interest.

    During the meeting on Sunday, the two leaders agreed that sustained coordination is a must for facing challenges and restoring peace and stability in the region, according to the Egyptian Presidency.

    Sisi highlighted Egypt’s unwavering support for Iraq and its people at all levels, particularly in the fight against terrorism and for the country’s security and stability, Xinhua news agency reported.

    Egypt is willing to diversify and put into work various frameworks of political, economic, and cultural cooperation with Iraq, Sisi said, stressing the need to intensify cooperation within the framework of the Trilateral Cooperation Mechanism among Egypt, Iraq and Jordan.

    For his part, al-Sudani lauded the firm and historical bonds between the two countries and Egypt’s efforts to support Iraq at all levels.

    In this respect, he appreciated the “prominent role” that Egypt has played in forwarding the mechanisms of joint Arab action to maintain peace and development in spite of challenges in the region.

    British couple sentenced for smuggling Iraqi migrants in sofas

    A British court sentenced three people— couple and their accomplice to prison, on charges of attempting to bring two Iraqis into the United Kingdom (UK) by hiding them in sofas, local media reported.

    The couple, 48-year-old Nicholas Fulwood and his wife 45-year-old Pamela, from the Midlands region of the United Kingdom, tried to smuggle immigrants from Iraq to Britain inside sofas with the help of a car wash company manager named Azad Ahmadi. 

    On Monday, February 20, Nicholas Fullwood was jailed for three years, while his wife was handed a two-year sentence, the Independent reported.

    Ahmadi, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison.

    On January 5, 2019, the couple was stopped when trying to enter the UK, in a Peugeot Boxer van, by Border Force officers in the UK control zone in Coquelles, France.

    As per media reports, the couple told officers they were on their way back to the UK after shipping furniture in Lille, in northern France.

    Upon searching the truck, the officers found two Iraqi immigrants at the base of two different sofas. 

    It is reported that, the three were sentenced for conspiracy to assist illegal immigration, following an investigation by the Criminal and Financial Investigation Unit of the Ministry of Interior.
