Baghdad: Iraq and France have inked a strategic partnership agreement to enhance bilateral cooperation in various areas including energy and security, according to Iraqi officials.

The agreement was signed during Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani’s one-day visit to Paris, after he met with French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and talked with President Emmanuel Macron, al-Sudani’s media office tweeted, Xinhua News Agency reported.

During talks with Macron, the two leaders discussed bilateral ties, regional and international issues of common concern, and joint cooperation in vital sectors, said the media office’s press release.

The agreement covers cooperation in such areas as combating terrorism and extremism, cultural exchange, crisis management, combating economic and organised crime, protecting the environment and promoting human rights, which, al-Sudani tweeted on Thursday, “lays down a road map for expanding our two countries’ cooperation in various fields.”

The past years have witnessed deepened bilateral exchanges. Macron has visited Iraq twice, one in 2020 and another in 2021. France-headquartered oil producer TotalEnergies signed a deal with the Iraqi government in 2021, agreeing to invest in oil, gas and renewables projects in southern Iraq over 25 years.

Iraq sentences 14 people to death for mass killings of soldiers in 2014

Baghdad: An Iraqi court has sentenced 14 terrorists to death over the mass killings of about 1,700 soldiers when the Islamic State (IS) had seized Tikrit, the capital of Salahudin province, in 2014.

“The Central Criminal Court issued a verdict to execute the 14 terrorist criminals after establishing that they were involved in the Speicher massacre,” the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement.

In June 2014, armed Sunni terrorists, spearheaded by IS group, launched a surprise offensive on Iraqi security forces and captured a large part of the country’s northern and western territories after government troops abandoned their posts and military equipment.

Reports said that some 1,700 soldiers who walked out of an air base, known as Camp Speicher north of Tikrit, were abducted and killed by the IS.

The terror group later posted videos and photos showing its militants loading dozens of soldiers onto trucks, forcing them to lie face down and opening fire on them.

Some were shown being dragged to the edge of the Tigris River and thrown into the water after being shot in the heads.

5 killed in airstrike on IS militants in Iraq: Military

    [ad_1]

Baghdad: The death toll from Saturday’s airstrike on Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq’s Salahudin province rose to five, the Iraqi military said.

Soldiers found the bodies of two IS militants and body parts of three other militants in the IS hideout that was bombed on Saturday by Iraqi aircraft in a rocky area in eastern Salahudin, in addition to weapons and an ammunition cache, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement from the Joint Operations Command (JOC).

On Saturday, an earlier JOC statement said that Iraqi aircraft carried out an airstrike on two IS militants in their hideout near Tuz Khurmato and killed them all.

The security situation in Iraq has been improving since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, the IS militants have since melted into urban centres, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians.
