Tehran: The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman has said that three Iranian diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia have resumed operations.

Nasser Kanaani made the remarks on Monday at a weekly press conference when asked to comment on the progress by Iran and Saudi Arabia to reopen their diplomatic missions following an agreement that was reached between the two countries in March on the normalisation of their bilateral ties, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a report by Mehr news agency.

The three diplomatic missions are Iran’s embassy in Riyadh, a consulate general in Jeddah and a representative office to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah, Kanaani was quoted as saying.

Kanaani stressed that the two countries are in the early stages of resuming their bilateral relations and reopening their embassies, adding that Iran’s technical team is currently based in Saudi Arabia and laying the groundwork.

He said he is optimistic that the two countries’ embassies will start their full operations as planned in accordance with their agreement.

The two countries had carried out good coordination in a humanitarian issue in their first steps toward the resumption of the bilateral diplomatic activities, said Kanaani, adding that the evacuation of 65 Iranian nationals from Sudan and their transfer to Iran via the Saudi port city of Jeddah was a positive development.

Regarding an upcoming visit by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Saudi Arabia, Kanaani said Tehran has received an official invitation from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and has responded to it officially.

At a press conference held in the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Friday, Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian confirmed that he and his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud have also invited each other for official visits.

Saudi Arabia and Iran reached a deal in March to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and missions in the two countries within two months.

On April 6, the two countries announced the resumption of diplomatic relations with immediate effect.

  • Iranian-born US woman jailed for 4 years in plot to kidnap Iranian activist Masih Alinejad

Iranian-born US woman jailed for 4 years in plot to kidnap Iranian activist Masih Alinejad

    [ad_1]

Tehran: An American citizen of Iranian origin residing in California was sentenced to four years in prison for her role in the attempted kidnapping of Masih Alinejad, an Iranian activist, the US Department of Justice announced.

In December 2022, 48-year-old Niloufar Bahadorifar, was charged with many offences, including conspiracy to break US sanctions by providing Iran with material support.

On Friday, the US Attorney General for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, announced that Niloufar Bahadorifar had been sentenced to 4 years in prison for conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by providing financial services to Iran and its government in violation of US sanctions.

    MS Education Academy

“Niloufar Bahadorifar willfully violated the sanctions and provided financial support to Iranian intelligence assets, who in turn participated in a plot to kidnap an Iranian human rights activist living in the United States whom the Iranian government sought to silence,” prosecutor Damien Williams said.

According to New York Times, US court confirmed that Bahadorifar paid a private investigator who was recruited in 2020 to monitor Masih Alinejad, an activist campaigning against the veil and residing in New York.

    Provided funds, access

Bahadorifar was convicted of laundering money to the United States from Iran that was used to pay private investigators to conduct surveillance on Alinejad on behalf of an alleged Iranian intelligence agent, Mahmoud Khazein.

Bahadorifar has been accused of making cash deposits of more than 476,100 dollars into accounts in the US since 2019, structuring most deposits in increments of less than 10,000 dollars to avoid detection by US financial authorities.

Bahadorifar was not accused of taking part in the kidnapping plot itself, and her lawyers argued that she was unintentionally deceptive.

On Friday, Alinejad said in a video statement on Twitter that she came face to face with Bahadurifar shortly after appearing in federal court.

“In my statement I said in the federal court, that this is beyond belief that anyone could even claim that they are unaware of the evil nature of the Islamic Republic,” said Alinejad. “The sentence today is a reminder for the US government, for Europeans, who is still trying to get a deal with the Islamic Republic because the Islamic Republic is a terrorist regime.”

Alinejad, an activist-journalist, became a US citizen in 2019. She has been an advocate for women’s rights in Iran for years and has played a prominent role in amplifying the voices of demonstrators during the most recent wave of protests, which began in September 2022.

Iranian Prez calls for ‘united front’ among Muslim states to support Palestinians

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has called on Muslim states to form a “united and consistent” front in support of the Palestinians against Israel.

In a phone conversation with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Raisi said that Iran and Algeria share common stances on regional and international affairs, particularly the Palestine issue and the protection of the Palestinians’ rights, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement posted on the website of the Iranian President’s office.

The Algerian President said that he hoped that “Palestine would be liberated from the Israelis through cooperation among Muslim states”.

    MS Education Academy

The phone conversation followed last week’s escalation of tension along the Israeli borders with Lebanon and the Palestinian enclave of Gaza Strip. Militants from southern Lebanon and Gaza fired rockets at Israel, while Israel responded with airstrikes.

The latest round of escalation followed Israeli raids earlier last week at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, a flashpoint holy site in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israeli police clashed with dozens of Palestinian worshippers. The Israeli police said “dozens of law-breaking youths” attempted to barricade themselves inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque “to incite riots”.

Iranian President to visit Saudi Arabia

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Less than a month since Tehran and Riyadh agreed to restore diplomatic relations, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has accepted an invitation from Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to visit the kingdom, a top official confirmed here.

Iran’s first vice president Mohammad Mokhber made the remarks on Monday while he was asked by the media respond to the Saudi King’s invitation to Raisi of visiting Riyadh, Xinhua news agency reported.

China, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced on March 10 that the latter two had reached a deal which includes the agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and missions within two months.

    MS Education Academy

On March 19, Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian President’s deputy chief of staff for political affairs, had confirmed that the Saudi king sent the invitation letter to Raisi to visit Riyadh.

In a social media post, Jamshidi had said the monarch said in the letter that he welcomed the deal between the two “brotherly countries” on the normalisation of bilateral ties and called for strong economic and regional cooperation between Riyadh and Tehran.

The two nations have also announced they will reopen embassies within two months and re-establish trade and security relations.

Saudi Arabia cut ties in January 2016 after demonstrators stormed its embassy in Tehran after Riyadh had executed the prominent Shia Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, who was convicted of terror-related offences.

Since then, tensions between the Sunni- and Shia-led neighbours have often been high, with each regarding the other as a threatening power seeking regional dominance.

They have been on opposing sides of several regional conflicts, including the civil wars in Syria and Yemen.

Also on Monday, it was announced that Iran and Saudi Arabia will open a joint chamber of commerce soon.

Keyvan Kashefi, a member of the presiding board of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA), said that Tehran plans to begin the exchange of business delegations with Saudi Arabia immediately after the reopening of the embassies in the two countries and the reinstatement of their ambassadors.
