  • Iran pledges more access for nuclear inspectors, head of UN watchdog says

Iran pledges more access for nuclear inspectors, head of UN watchdog says

    iran 73026

Iran pledged to re-install monitoring equipment at its nuclear facilities and to assist an investigation into uranium traces detected at undeclared sites, the head of the U.N.’s nuclear agency said Saturday after a visit to Tehran.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other top officials in Tehran on Saturday.

“Over the past few months, there was a reduction in some of the monitoring activities” related to cameras and other equipment “which were not operating,” Grossi told reporters upon his return to Vienna. “We have agreed that those will be operating again.”

A joint statement issued on Saturday by the IAEA and Iran’s nuclear agency included assurances that Tehran would address long-standing complaints about access to its disputed nuclear program. But the text went into little detail, and similar promises by Iran have yielded little in the past.

“Iran expressed its readiness to continue its cooperation and provide further information and access to address the outstanding safeguards issues,” according to the joint statement.

“These are not words. This is very concrete,” Grossi said of the assurances he received in Tehran, the Associated Press reported.

The visit to Iran followed a recent report from the IAEA, seen by CNN and other media, that confirmed that uranium particles enriched to 83.7 percent purity, close to the 90 percent needed to make a nuclear bomb, were found at an Iranian nuclear site. The report raised concerns that Tehran was speeding up its enrichment.

Grossi said the Iranians had agreed to increase inspections at that site by 50 percent, the AP reported.

Iran also will allow the re-installation of extra monitoring equipment that had been put in place under the 2015 nuclear deal, but then removed last year as the agreement fell apart, Reuters reported.

The 2015 deal gave Tehran relief from most international sanctions as long as it allowed the U.N. watchdog to monitor its nuclear activities. But it began to unravel after the U.S.’s unilateral withdrawal in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump.

Iran also “will allow the IAEA to implement further appropriate verification and monitoring activities,” according to Saturday’s joint statement. “Modalities will be agreed between the two sides in the course of a technical meeting which will take place soon in Tehran,” it said.

Grossi said there was a “marked improvement” in his dialogue with Iranian officials, according to the AP. “I hope we will be seeing results soon. We will see.”

Iran ousts 2 German diplomats over Berlin’s ‘interventionist’ measures

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iran has declared two German diplomats to be personae non gratae and has expelled them from the Islamic republic over Berlin’s “interventionist and irresponsible” measures against Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani blamed the German government for its “irresponsible interference” in Iran’s internal and judicial affairs, according to a statement published on the Foreign Ministry’s website on Wednesday.

The Ministry has summoned the German Ambassador to Tehran, Hans-Udo Muzel and informed him of the decision, Kanaani was quoted as saying in the statement.

Iran will “act decisively” in response to unreasonable demands, said Kanaani, warning that Iran will have “other alternatives” if certain countries seek to disregard its fundamental principles and national sovereignty, Xinhua news agency reported.

On February 22, Germany announced that it would expel two diplomats from Iran’s embassy in Berlin after an Iranian court handed down the death sentence to Jamshid Sharmahd, an Iranian-German national, for “planning and organising acts of terror in the country”.

According to the Mizan news agency affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, Iran handed down the death sentence on February 21, accusing Sharmahd as “the ringleader of the Tondar(Thunder) group who intended to carry out 23 terror operations(in Iran), of which only five were conducted”.

One day later, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced in a statement that Berlin had declared two staff members from the Iranian embassy in Berlin to be personae non gratae and ordered them to leave Germany immediately.

The Iranian Intelligence Ministry announced the arrest of Sharmahd in 2020.

Founded by a number of Iranian pro-monarchists in Britain in 2003, the Tondar group is accused of carrying out a bombing attack in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz in 2008, which killed 14 people and injured 300 others, and planning other attacks in the country, according to Mizan.

Iran releases Spanish woman detained amid anti-hijab protests

    [ad_1]

Tehran: The Iranian authorities have released a Spanish woman imprisoned for three months on charges of espionage after her arrest during anti-government protests.

24-year-old Ana Baneira Suarez, a Spanish civil activist, who had been imprisoned in Iran since November 2022, was released on Saturday, February 25.

“Ana Baneira was released yesterday, but we didn’t want to make it public before her plane took off from Iran,” the Spanish foreign minister said, Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported on Sunday.

    Protests in Iran continue

Iran has been rocked by sweeping protests since September 16, over the death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of Iran’s morality police.

Her death has since ignited anger over several issues, including the restrictions imposed on personal freedoms and strict rules regarding women’s clothing, as well as the living and economic crisis that Iranians suffer from, not to mention the strict laws imposed by the regime and its political and religious composition in general.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) announced that 530 protesters had been killed in the unrest as of Monday, February 20, including 71 children.

At least 19,763 people, including 723 students, were arrested in those protests that took place in 165 cities and towns and 144 universities.

  • Top Arab lawmakers’ Syria visit ‘positive step’ toward greater solidarity: Iran

Top Arab lawmakers’ Syria visit ‘positive step’ toward greater solidarity: Iran

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iran said on Tuesday that the visit of senior Arab lawmakers to quake-ravaged Syria is a step toward greater “solidarity” in the region.

Making the remarks in a tweet, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the visit of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) delegation on Sunday represented fresh “breakthroughs” in relations between Syria and other Arab countries, Xinhua news agency reported.

Headed by the Speaker of the Arab Parliament Adel Abdel-Rahman Al-Asoomi and Iraqi parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, the delegation’s Sunday visit was aimed at “expressing solidarity” with Syria following the deadly quakes that jolted the country on February 6, Kanaani noted.

These breakthroughs are also proof of greater “realism” in the region and in the Muslim world, he added.

If the regional countries can adopt “realistic and independent” national approaches and resist the demands of any hegemonic power, they will resolve their problems through dialogue and regional mechanisms, the spokesman said.

After the tragic earthquakes, Arab countries have sent many aid shipments to Syria amid signs of a wide-scale diplomatic detente.

The AIPU is a regional parliamentary organisation composed of parliamentary groups representing the Arab Parliament, the legislative body of the Arab League. Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 after the war broke out in the country.

Iran seeks to export nuclear products, technology: Atomic chief

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iran’s atomic chief has said that the country seeks to export its nuclear products and technology amid the “propaganda warfare” conducted by enemies to block the country’s progress in the nuclear field.

President of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami made the remarks at the 29th Iranian Nuclear Conference at Shahid Beheshti University on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported, citing Iran’s Mehr News Agency.

Eslami said the country seeks to export its nuclear products and technology, adding that Iran is currently exporting radiopharmaceuticals and some types of nuclear equipment.

He also referred to the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists and attacks on Iranian nuclear sites as measures taken by Iran’s enemies to impede the progress of Iran’s nuclear technology.

The US and its Western allies have accused Iran of developing a nuclear weapon, and Washington has imposed sanctions on Tehran aiming to stop its nuclear activities.

Iran rejects the allegation as “baseless” and sanctions as “illegal”, saying its nuclear program is peaceful and the country has never sought to develop a nuclear weapon.

  • Russia may supply Iran with fighter jets, Kirby says

Russia may supply Iran with fighter jets, Kirby says

    [ad_1]

Iran is also seeking to purchase attack helicopters, radars and combat trainer aircraft, he said. In total, Iran is hoping to obtain “billions of dollars” worth of military equipment from Russia.

When asked for details on the type of fighter jets or when they may be delivered, Kirby refused to elaborate.

“That’s really as far as I’m going to be allowed to go here,” Kirby said. “We’re going to be watching this very closely to see what, if anything, actually transpires.”

A closer military alliance between the two countries could make Western efforts in Ukraine and elsewhere more complicated, he said.

“It’s not only certainly going to make things in the Ukraine more difficult, but it could certainly make the security situation in the Middle East more difficult for our partners and friends there,” he added.

Last year, the U.S. sanctioned Iran for allegedly planning to sell or already selling Russia weapons, including drones and surface-to-surface missiles.

In December, senior Biden administration officials said Moscow was providing “unprecedented” military and technical support to Tehran in exchange for weapons, NBC News reported. Last spring, officials said Iranian pilots trained in Russia to fly a Russian fighter jet, indicating that Iran “may begin receiving the aircraft within the next year.”

  • Iran nuclear chief says IAEA officials in Iran to remove ambiguities

Iran nuclear chief says IAEA officials in Iran to remove ambiguities

    [ad_1]

Tehran: The Iranian nuclear chief has said the officials of the IAEA are in Tehran and have been inspecting the country’s nuclear facilities since two days to resolve the ambiguities.

Mohammad Eslami, President of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI), on Wednesday made the remarks to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting, noting Tehran is continuing its cooperation and relations with the IAEA within the framework of the safeguards agreements, according to Iranian Students’ News Agency.

Answering a question about the claim in a recent Bloomberg report that “Iran is enriching uranium to levels above 60 per cent,” Eslami noted that it was due to a misperception by one of the inspectors.

He said Iran is always careful to prevent any new ambiguity in the process of cooperation with the IAEA, Xinhua news agency reported.

Turning to a 2015 nuclear deal, Eslami added the agreement was a contract between Iran and the P5+1 based on efforts to build mutual trust, adding that it is quite “unacceptable” to Iran that a political pressure campaign would seek to force Tehran into fulfilling its commitments one-sidedly while others are not honouring theirs.

Bloomberg’s Sunday report cited two senior diplomats as claiming that IAEA inspectors in Iran last week detected uranium enriched to 84 per cent purity, “just 6 per cent below that needed for a nuclear weapon.”

On Sunday, Iranian official news agency IRNA quoted the AEOI spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi as saying that the Bloomberg report was a “distortion of the facts” and part of a smear campaign.

Over the past few months, the IAEA has criticised Iran for its lack of cooperation with the agency. On November 17, 2022, the IAEA’s Board of Governors passed a resolution proposed by the US, Britain, France, and Germany that called on Iran to collaborate with the agency’s investigators regarding the alleged “traces of uranium” at a number of its “undeclared” sites.

Iran has repeatedly rejected such allegations.

  • Dozens dead in migrant shipwreck off Italian coast

Dozens dead in migrant shipwreck off Italian coast

    [ad_1]

    migration italy 00337

At least 43 migrants drowned on Sunday after the fishing boat on which they were traveling sank off the coast of the Italian region of Calabria.

According to local authorities, some 250 migrants were crammed aboard the ship, which broke in two about 20 kilometers from the city of Crotone. Over 100 passengers have been rescued, but at least 70 of the people who were aboard the ship remain missing.

Over the course of the morning, bodies, including those of children and at least one newborn baby, have washed ashore in the resort town of Steccato di Cutro, according to local reports.

Although the ship’s port of origin was in Turkey, authorities say the majority of the migrants that have been rescued are from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the disaster was “a huge tragedy that demonstrates how necessary it is to oppose the chains of irregular migration,” adding that more needed to be done to clamp down on “unscrupulous smugglers” who, “in order to get rich, organize improvised trips with inadequate boats and in prohibitive conditions.”

Calabrian President Roberto Occhiuto slammed EU authorities for their inaction in addressing the migration crisis and asked “what has the European Union been doing all these years?”

“Where is Europe when it comes to guaranteeing security and legality?” he asked, adding that regions like his were left on their own to “manage emergencies and mourn the dead.”

According to the International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project, at least 2,366 migrants lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean last year; at least 124 have been reporting missing in its waters since the beginning of this year.
