IPL 2023: Kohli, Du Plessis power RCB to thumping 8-wicket win over MI

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Scintillating half-centuries from Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli powered Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to a thumping eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in an IPL 2023 match, marking a happy homecoming at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, here on Sunday.

As RCB took the field in Chinnaswamy Stadium after 1247 days, chants of the franchise engulfed the whole arena. To their credit, RCB didnโ€™t disappoint at all, as bowlers got wickets in power-play and middle overs to keep Mumbai to 171/7, though young Tilak Varma shined with an outstanding 84 not out off just 46 balls.

In reply, du Plessis and Kohli put out an exhibition of majestic strokeplay and rattled Mumbaiโ€™s bowling attack to enthrall home fans. While du Plessis made 73 off 43 balls, including five fours and six sixes, Kohli was in sublime touch to be 82 not out off 49 balls, laced with six fours and five sixes to chase 172 in 16.2 overs to get their IPL 2023 campaign off to a winning start.

    MS Education Academy

In defence of 171, Mumbai brought in Jason Behrendorff as an impact player in place of Suryakumar Yadav to share the new-ball with Arshad Khan. After making a watchful start, du Plessis cut down on the swing by dancing down the pitch to hit a four and two sixes on both sides of the wicket off Behrendorff.

Jofra Archer put down Kohli on his first ball of the match. Kohli then followed it up by placing a steer between backward point and short third man for four, and smacked a six over long-off. Kohli and du Plessis took a boundary each off Piyush Chawla and Archer to bring the fifty of their opening partnership in the power-play.

Du Plessis continued to be unstoppable โ€” timing his drives through the off-side against Cameron Green twice and ended the over with a scooped six to take 17 runs off the eighth over. He welcomed off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen with consecutive sixes over mid-wicket and long-on, first of which took him to his fifty in 29 balls.

Kohli then danced down the pitch to whack Chawla over long-on for six, and bring up the century of the opening partnership in the 11th over, before reaching his fifty in 38 balls. He then welcomed Behrendorff with a pull through cow corner for four, before du Plessis pulled and flicked for four and six respectively.

Kohli hammered sixes off Archer and Arshad through the leg-side to keep Mumbai under the pump. They had a breakthrough when du Plessis holed out to long-on, breaking the 148-run opening partnership. After Dinesh Karthik fell for a three-ball duck, Glenn Maxwell slapped sixes over extra cover and fine leg, with Kohli whipping and lofting for four and six respectively to complete Bangaloreโ€™s chase with 22 balls remaining.

Earlier, Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley and Karn Sharma starred to reduce Mumbai to 123/7, after being 48/4 at one point. But Varma stood tall and impressed everyone with his skill and temperament in hitting nine boundaries and four sixes at a strike-rate of 182.6, as Mumbai got 69 runs from the last five overs.

Ishan Kishanโ€™s attempt to flick off Siraj took a fat leading edge to short third man. Cameron Green was cleaned bowled by a Topley yorker. Siraj could have had Rohit Sharma caught with a sharp bouncer, but he collided with Dinesh Karthik as neither of the two could hold on to the catch.

But Rohit, who earlier survived a direct hit attempt, was unable to capitalise on the two breathers and nicked behind off Akash Deep. Suryakumar Yadav had a start but ended up cutting straight to backward point off Michael Bracewell.

Despite wickets falling around, Varma continued to match forward. He began with a six over long-on off Deep which came right off the middle of the bat. When Harshal Patel pitched down leg, he came on top of the bounce to pull past short fine leg.

Varma was impressive in facing off-spinners; reverse-sweeping off Bracewell for four. He welcomed Glenn Maxwell by dancing down the pitch to thump a six over long-on, followed by going on backfoot to pull through mid-wicket for four.

Varma was also talking and advising T20 debutant Nehal Wadhera after every ball. That effect rubbed on when Wadhera pulled and smacked Karn Sharma for consecutive sixes, including a 101-m hit over long-on.

But Karn had the last laugh as Wadhera holed out to long-on in the 14th over. Two overs later, Tim David tried to hoick off Karn, but lost his middle stump. With Hrithik Shokeen falling to an athletic catch by Faf du Plessis off Harshal, Varma continued to get runs, pulling off Karn through fine leg for four.

He reached his fifty in 32 balls with a terrific heave over deep square leg for six off Deep. When Harshal gave some width, Varma freed his arms to slash through point for four. He then lofted and pulled Siraj for a brace of boundaries in the 19th over where the fast bowler gave four wides.

Varma pulled Harshal in the gap through square leg for four in the final over, before ending the innings with a helicopter shot to send a fuller delivery over long-on for six, as 22 runs came off the final over.

  • Daniel Manohar: From flamboyant Hyderabad opener to much respected IPL match referee

Daniel Manohar: From flamboyant Hyderabad opener to much respected IPL match referee

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: It was a star-studded Ranji Trophy cricket match between Karnataka and Hyderabad at the Gymkhana Grounds, Secunderabad. The visitors had past, present and future India players Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Rahul Dravid, Sujith Somasunder, Vijay Bharadwaj and Sunil Joshi. The host was not low on firepower eitherโ€“led by then Indian captain Mohd. Azharuddin, VVS Laxman, Venkatapathy Raju and Noel David.

If courage and confidence are contagious, โ€˜Danny,โ€™ the rookie and non-striker, drew strength from senior pro Gangashetty Arvind Kumar. The southpaw duo not only warded off but blunted the blistering opening assault unleashed by Srinath and Prasad.

The contest between batsman and bowler was a study in contrast, the lean and wiry Danny, taking on the burly if not towering Prasad. Banging the ball in often, the strapping speedster plied the short stuff to scare the new recruit.

    MS Education Academy

The confrontation turned head on, the average delivery from the burly bowler bouncing up chest high. With scant regard for Indiaโ€™s spearhead of the time, Danny despatched Prasad repeatedly to the square leg and mid wicket boundaries, Manoharโ€™s hand-eye coordination ensuring his bat, turning in a horizontal arc, reached right in time to meet the racing sphere.

Danny eventually fell to Prasad, nicking to wicket-keeper Avinash Vaidya. November 6, 1997 would remain a red letter day for Manohar, not just for that quickfire and swashbuckling 144. After day one was done and dusted, another memory will forever remain etched in his mind, best described by Danny himself.

โ€œAfter the team meeting, everyone left. VVS (Laxman), my childhood friend and I were the last ones in the dressing room. So I packed my kit bag but VVS was still sitting and looking out of the window. I told him I was leaving and he turned towards me and told me bye.

โ€œTo my surprise VVS was sitting there, tears rolling down his cheeks. I went up to him and asked him what was wrong. He didnโ€™t answer as he was thoroughly disappointed that he missed out on a hundred. I told him 67 was not a bad score but he was not satisfied with that. That was really a life lesson of sorts, not to be satisfied with 50s.โ€

The Very Very Special batsman was equally effusive in praise of his mate. โ€œAgainst a formidable Karnataka attack, which had world class bowlers, Danny in his very first outing showed no sign of nerves. As a free-stroking, flamboyant opener, each shot of his seemed better than the previous one.

โ€œFrom age group competitions that we played together, I saw Danny grow from a gifted, talented and consistent run-getter to a very valuable all-rounder, contributing crucial overs with the ball and showing ability to pick up vital wickets too. After a successful India A career, his understanding of the game has made him a widely respected match referee besides grooming promising youngsters from his Phoenix Cricket Academy in Yapral, Secunderabad,โ€ the wristy stylist added.

The euphoria of that early and highly flying start evaporated and there was a drought of centuries for Danny over many matches afterwards. โ€œThe sheer magnitude of his achievement must have weighed him down. Expectations from him were too high since that dream debut and that must have put pressure on him,โ€ said R. Sridhar, Indiaโ€™s former fielding coach.

โ€œIf there was a gap between that first century and the second, Danny more than made up for it subsequently. As his career progressed, he became very consistent. He played fearlessly, adding a lot of value to the side. As a left-hander he bolstered the batting considerably, combining well with fellow-opener Nand Kishore or thereon VVS Laxman and Vanka Pratap. As a three-dimensional cricketer, he brought a lot of balance to the squad not just as a batsman but as a bowler and fielder too,โ€ said Sridhar, who also shared the Hyderabad dressing room with Manohar for a few seasons.

โ€œHe was a fine teammate and great fun in the dressing room. Alongside the likes of N.P. Singh and Noel David, there was never a dull moment. Post-playing days, heโ€™s doing great as a match referee. Heโ€™s one of Indiaโ€™s best cricket officials,โ€ said Sridhar, endorsing his ex-comradeโ€™s expertise gleaned from experience.

The Hyderabad squad was never short on fun. Danny fondly recalled an anecdote. โ€œKanwaljeet Singh pranked one of our players, talking like a girl. I donโ€™t want to mention who was at the receiving end but that poor guy was so convinced that he kept looking for that girl for almost two years !โ€

Manohar continued to be in awe of Laxman though. โ€œVVS was deeply disappointed after he was dropped from the Indian Test team, despite a stunning 167 against Australia at Sydney just months before. Hyderabad recorded a 92-run win against UP in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal at Kanpur, where VVS scored centuries in both inningsโ€“128 and an unbeaten 177.

โ€œAfter dinner, Parth (Satwalkar), Nand (Kishore), VVS and I were outside a telephone booth calling our respective homes. I could hear VVS continuously telling his dad, โ€œOk, I will do it.โ€ When I asked VVS what it was about, he recounted his dad telling him โ€˜enough of getting 100s and it was time to aim for 200s and 300s,โ€™ continued Manohar.

DOUBLE DEBUT Daniel Manohar extreme right on his first assignment as IPL Match Referee oversees the toss between Gujarat Titans in its first ever outing and Lucklnow Super Giants 1
DOUBLE DEBUT: Daniel Manohar (extreme right) on his first assignment as match referee, oversees the toss between Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

Hyderabadโ€™s cricket caravan then moved to Bangalore for the semifinal against Karnataka from April 11 to 15, 2000. โ€œVVS started his batting, went on and on to a triple century. His commanding 353 spanned over 12 and a half hours, containing 52 boundaries and two blows that sailed over the ropes. Amazed by his temperament and determination, I literally bowed to him in homage when he retired to the dressing room, logging perhaps the highest number of centuries in a season in the competitionโ€™s history,โ€ Danny remembered.

Manohar told Cricinfo of a special bond he shared with fellow opener Nand Kishore. In six to seven years, when jointly starting the innings for Hyderabad, neither ran the other out, exemplifying the splendid understanding they enjoyed between them. If split-second decision-making in shot selection against a delivery or bowler was paramount as a player, his career after he hung up his boots made it equally imperative to think on his feet.

Sure enough there would be testing times ahead. โ€œIn last yearโ€™s Indian Premier League (IPL) game between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, during the last over of the game, Delhi was not happy with a waist-high no ball call by the umpire. A lot of drama followed where Rishab Pant was calling his players out. Later their coach Praveen Amre ran into the field. In this situation there were too many things to notice and charge the players,โ€ recalled Danny.

โ€œRishab was fined 100% of his match fee as was Amre, also slapped with a match ban. Shardul Thakur was fined 50% of his match fee for talking inappropriately about the umpiring. This was by far the most challenging situation I had faced as a match referee.

โ€œBut in the end, the players were given the right judgement and a strong signal sent out that nothing was/is greater than the game,โ€ concluded Manohar, a Deputy Manager with State Bank of India, in the CCPC Department of its Hyderabad Head Office.

IPL 2023: CSK captain MS Dhoni may miss opening match against Gujarat Titans, hereโ€™sย why โ€“ย Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Chennai Super Kings captain attended the IPL captainโ€™s meet in Ahmedabad on Thursday and seemed to be in good spirits.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, captain of the Chennai Super Kings, is questionable for Fridayโ€™s first game of the Indian Premier League 2023 against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad owing to a soreness in his left knee, according to The Indian Express.

According to the source, Dhoni is experiencing pain and does not want to risk further injury because of the teamโ€™s current lack of wicketkeepers. When asked for comment, though, the franchise declined.

Meanwhile, Dhoni was present at the captainโ€™s meet held at the Narendra Modi Stadium earlier that day. Rohit Sharma, captain of the Mumbai Indians, was absent due to sickness.

Dhoni has been putting in a lot of work in Chepauk in preparation for the IPL. The 41-year-old still seemed to be in peak physical condition.

It would be intriguing to watch who takes charge of the team if Dhoni is unable to play on Friday. Ben Stokes should be considered for the captaincy. In seven games last year, Ravindra Jadeja was the captain.

At CSKโ€™s training session on Thursday, Dhoni reportedly did not bat at nets but instead spoke with Gujarat Titans coach Gary Kirsten, with whom he won the ODI World Cup in 2011.

It has also been learned that the decision on whether or not to include Dhoni in the starting Eleven will be made on the morning of the game. Devon Conway might maintain wickets if he makes the starting eleven. Either Ruturaj Gaikwad or Ambati Rayudu will wear the gloves if the New Zealand international is left off.

Dhoniโ€™s left knee, it has been said, has been giving him trouble over the last few days. During CSKโ€™s intra-squad encounter on Monday, Dhoni was reluctant to step out to bat and was spotted sitting with a knee cap.

As he attempted to go for a two, he would hobble and struggle to get there.
