1st-gen iPhone sold for Rs 45 lakh at auction

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: A first-generation seal-packed iPhone was sold for $54,904 (around Rs 45 lakh) at auction.

The device originally cost $599 when it was first introduced in 2007, so this is a surcharge of more than $54,000, reports MacRumors.

A former Apple employee, who bought the original iPhone when it was released, placed it for sale on RR Auction.

An “undiscovered” Apple-1 computer was also sold by RR Auction for an undisclosed sum, along with other Apple products and memorabilia that fetched high prices.

About $4,000 was paid for Apple CEO Tim Cook-signed iPhone 11, $12,500 was spent on Steve Jobs-annotated technical manuals, and a Steve Jobs business card sold for $6,188, the report said.

Last month, it was reported that a first-generation iPhone had sold for a record-breaking price of $63,356 (approx Rs 52,00,000) at an auction, the highest sale ever recorded for an original 2007 iPhone.

Meanwhile, in August last year, an unopened first-generation 2007 iPhone in a sealed box had been sold for $35,000 (nearly Rs 28 lakh) in an auction in the US.

  • Apple iPhone SE 4 may feature OLED panel from Chinese supplier

Apple iPhone SE 4 may feature OLED panel from Chinese supplier

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Tech giant Apple will use OLED panels from Chinese display supplier BOE in its upcoming fourth-generation iPhone SE smartphone models, the media reported.

Due to production problems, BOE missed the initial number of OLED panels intended for this year’s iPhone 15 series, with Samsung and LG claiming the majority of orders, reports MacRumors.

Now it is likely trying to make up for it by concentrating on making OLED panels for the budget-friendly iPhone SE 4.

Around 20 million OLED screens are anticipated to be used in the iPhone SE 4 next year.

Last month, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the tech giant has restarted development of the iPhone SE 4 smartphone, which will feature a 6.1-inch OLED display and an in-house 5G baseband chip.

Kuo had also mentioned that the mass production of the iPhone SE 4 will go “smoothly” in the first half of next year.

iPhone 15 Pro may not feature 2 buttons for volume control

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Tech giant Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 Pro smartphone will reportedly not feature two buttons for volume control.

Leaked drawings of the upcoming smartphone show that the regular two volume buttons will be replaced by a single long one, reports AppleInsider.

It will likely give the iPhone 15 Pro greater water and dust resistance because the solid-state button needs a much smaller hole in the frame to work.

The upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to be released in September this year, and will likely feature curved titanium sides and an EU-enforced USB-C charging port, the report said.

It was also rumoured that the tech giant will bring support for Wi-Fi 6E network to only iPhone 15 Pro models.

Last month, it was reported that the iPhone 15 Pro smartphone will come equipped with 8GB of RAM. For comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro models come equipped with 6GB of RAM.

However, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus smartphones are expected to remain at 6GB of RAM, but might be upgraded to faster RAM.

  • How iPhone passcode is helping thieves steal your money and data

How iPhone passcode is helping thieves steal your money and data

    [ad_1]

New York: The passcode in iPhones that helps people unlock their devices is now giving thieves easy access to steal their money and data at public places.

According to Wall Street Journal, using a remarkably low-tech trick, thieves watch iPhone owners tap their passcodes, then steal their targets’ phones and their digital lives.

A 31-year-old senior economist at a workforce intelligence startup lost all photos, contacts and notes in her iPhone 13 Pro Max which was snatched at a bar in Midtown Manhattan and about $10,000 vanished from her bank account in just 24 hours.

“With only the iPhone and its passcode, an interloper can within seconds change the password associated with the iPhone owner’s Apple ID,” said the report.

This would lock the victim out of their account, which includes anything stored in iCloud.

“The thief can also often loot the phone’s financial apps since the passcode can unlock access to all the device’s stored passwords,” it added.

When the password change is complete, the software offers an option to force other Apple devices, such as Macs or iPads, to sign out of the Apple account, so a victim couldn’t turn to those devices to regain access.

The Apple software never requires the user to enter an older password before setting a new one.

With the new password, the thief can disable Find My iPhone. Disabling Find My iPhone feature also allows the thief to resell the iPhone.

As Apple spokesperson said that iPhone is the most secure consumer mobile device, and “we work tirelessly every day to protect all our users from new and emerging threats”.

“We sympathise with users who have had this experience and we take all attacks on our users very seriously, no matter how rare,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“We will continue to advance the protections to help keep user accounts secure.”

Nearly all of the victims had their iPhones stolen while they were out at night socialising at public places, pubs and bars.

In all cases, the iPhone owners were locked out of their Apple accounts.

“They then discovered thousands of dollars in financial thefts, including some combination of Apple Pay charges, drained bank accounts linked to phone apps and money taken from PayPal’s Venmo and other money-sending apps,” the report elaborated.

The same vulnerability is there in Google’s Android mobile operating system but the “higher resale value of iPhones makes them a far more common target”, according to law enforcement officials.

“Our sign-in and account-recovery policies try to strike a balance between allowing legitimate users to retain access to their accounts in real-world scenarios and keeping the bad actors out,” a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Apple recently introduced the ability to use hardware security keys, little USB dongles, to protect the Apple ID.

  • Karnataka Shocker: Unable to pay for iPhone, man kills delivery agent

Karnataka Shocker: Unable to pay for iPhone, man kills delivery agent

    [ad_1]

A 20-year-old man in Karnataka has been arrested for allegedly killing and burning the body of a delivery boy from an e-commerce portal. The accused, identified as Hemanth Datta, had ordered an iPhone from Flipkart but was unable to pay for it upon delivery, which led to the horrific incident.

According to police sources, when the delivery boy, identified as Hemanth Naik, arrived at Datta’s residence on February 7, the accused asked him to open the box. However, Naik refused to do so and told him that if he opened it, he would not be able to take it back and asked Datta to pay for the phone. This led to an altercation, and Datta allegedly stabbed Naik to death.

Datta then kept the body at his house for four days before taking it near a railway bridge, pouring kerosene over it, and burning it at an isolated place. Naik’s brother filed a missing complaint on February 8, and after a friend informed him of a body found near a railway bridge on February 16, he approached the police again and filed another complaint.

The police registered a murder case and started tracking Naik’s mobile phone, which was last located at Datta’s residence. Upon raiding Datta’s house, they found Naik’s mobile phone and other articles, leading to the arrest of the accused.

    Flipkart’s reaction to the murder

Flipkart has issued a statement expressing their shock and sadness at the incident and has assured that they will provide full cooperation to the authorities in the investigation. The company has also urged its customers to treat delivery personnel with respect and ensure their safety.

  • Man orders iPhone, kills the delivery agent while receiving it: Report

    [ad_1]

A 20-year-old man allegedly killed a Flipkart delivery partner who came to deliver an iPhone at Karnataka’s Haasan district, reported The Hindu.

The accused stabbed the delivery person as he did not have money to pay for his order.

According to the report, Hemant Datta, the resident of Lakshmipuram in Haasan district’s Arsekere ordered an iPhone through Flipkart in the beginning of February. Hemanth Naik who works as a delivery agent with the e-commerce site came to the house of the accused on February 7 to deliver the phone. While delivering the phone, there was an argument over the payment and unboxing the mobile phone between the two and Datta allegedly stabbed Naik with a knife in his house. Police said that Naik died on spot and Datta had hidden the dead body in a gunny bag. Two days later, Datta threw the bag on a nearby railway track and later buried the body with petrol.

As the deceased went missing from February 7, his brother Manju Naik filed a police complaint with Arsekere police station. The police found the dead body at a railway track and the accused was arrested on Saturday. A case has been filed on the accused and police are investigating the matter further.

  • Apple may introduce high-end iPhone ‘Ultra’ in 2024

Apple may introduce high-end iPhone ‘Ultra’ in 2024

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Apple is considering launching a high-end iPhone “Ultra” above its Pro and Pro Max models, which could arrive by 2024 alongside the iPhone 16 lineup.

According to Apple tracker Mark Gurman, the tech giant’s plan to differentiate the Pro and Pro Max has fueled speculation of launching a high-end brand — the Ultra.

During Apple’s earnings call last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook did not rule out the possibility of a future price increase on iPhones.

Instead, he suggested that customers might be willing to pay more for a higher-quality product.

“The iPhone has become so integral into people’s lives,” Cook was quoted as saying.

“I think people are willing to really stretch to get the best they can afford in that category,” he added.

Moreover, Gurman stated that it is unclear how the top-of-the-line model will differ, but it will most likely include additional camera improvements, a faster chip, and possibly an even larger display.

There also may be more future-forward features, such as finally dropping the charging port, he added.

Meanwhile, Apple will reportedly launch a new ‘Apple Watch Ultra’ with a larger 2.1-inch display next year.

The new wearable is expected to become the first Apple Watch with over a 50mm case size.

The new Ultra is also likely to feature microLED display technology, which will offer higher brightness, decreased power consumption and improved contrast ratio as compared to the current models with OLED displays.
