India invites Pak Defence Minister Khawaja Asif for SCO meeting: Report

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: India has invited Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif to attend the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to be held in New Delhi in April, according to a media report on Wednesday.

India currently holds the presidency of the SCO, which comprises China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

As President of the SCO, India is set to host a series of meetings.

Diplomatic sources told The Express Tribune newspaper that the Indian government shared the formal invitation with the Pakistan Foreign Office on Tuesday.

There was no immediate confirmation from New Delhi on the Pakistani media report.

India earlier invited Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, as well as shared an invitation for the meeting of foreign ministers of SCO, the report said.

The chief justice, however, skipped the meeting of the SCO chief justices and instead Justice Muneeb Akhtar attended the meeting through a video link recently, it said.

The foreign ministers’ meeting is scheduled for May in Goa while the defence ministers’ huddle will be held in New Delhi in April.

The Pakistani government has said that it has not yet taken a decision on whether Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari or Defence Minister Asif will attend the meetings in India.

Bilawal and China’s Qin Gang are among the foreign ministers of the SCO member nations invited by India for the meeting it is scheduled to host in May.

The Pakistan Foreign Office has said that the decision will be taken at an appropriate time.

If the Pakistani foreign minister attends the meeting in person, it will be the first such visit from Islamabad to India since 2011. Then Pakistani foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar visited India that year. Khar is currently serving as the minister of state for foreign affairs.

In May 2014, then-Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif visited India to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.

In December 2015, then external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj visited Pakistan and days later, Modi made a brief visit to the neighbouring country.

The ties between India and Pakistan came under severe strain after India’s warplanes pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp in Pakistan’s Balakot in February 2019 in response to the Pulwama terror attack.

The relations further deteriorated after India announced the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special powers and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into Union territories in August 2019.

The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Over the years, it has emerged as one of the largest trans-regional international organisations. India and Pakistan became permanent members of the Beijing-based SCO in 2017.

Telangana: Eatala invites Boga Sravani to join BJP post BRS exit

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national executive member and Huzurabad MLA Eatala Rajender called on former Jagtial municipal chairperson Boga Sravani to join BJP, a day after she resigned from Bharat Rashra Samithi (BRS).

Eatala Rajender reached out to her in Jagtial and extended solidarity with Sravani while criticising BRS.

Rajender claimed that BRS leaders played dirty politics while alleging, “In KCR’s rule, not only the backward and SC communities but the leaders of his own party were facing injustice.”

Jagtial Municipal Chairperson row was a fine example of it, he added.

Rajender further claimed that the ruling party invested their time in praising the party head and paid the least interest towards resolving issues existing among their party members.

However, Sravani while speaking to the media said that she had not made any decision yet.

While she resigned from the post of municipal chairperson, alleging harassment by MLA M Sanjay Kumar in January, her resignation from the BRS was announced at a press conference Thursday.

Sravani’s sent her resignation letter to BRS working president KT Rama Rao reasoning that all major parties had invited her to join them, but she was yet to decide her next move.

She also expressed her gratitude to MLC K Kavitha and KTR in her letter.

“My political career was disrupted due to MLA Sanjay Kumar’s conspiratory politics. I resigned as Municipal chairperson to protect my self-respect,” Sravani wrote.

DU invites applications from startup innovators, offers incubation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi University’s Cluster Innovation Centre (CIC) is inviting applications from people with startup ideas with “commercial viability” to help them see through their execution.

The applications will remain open till March 13.

“Anybody from the university or in fact outside the university with a promising idea can apply,” said CIC Director Shobha Bagai.

The university is planning to take in four startups and provide them with assistance. No stipend or financial support will be offered, Bagai said.

“We are trying to help these young minds. We are starting startups which have certain ideas but are at the very very basic stage… they need working space and they need a certain mentor to take them to the next step,” she said.

Bagai said the CIC wanted to formalise the initiative hence it advertised the offer. “Mentors will be from our faculty and people from outside.”

Under the initiative, the university will offer co-working space and mentoring support for 3+3 months, Bagai said.

The promoters must have the technical skills for prototyping for converting their idea into a product.

There are certain parameters on which an application will be judged by a committee led by CIC faculty.

“We have already asked them to fill up a form. In that form, they have to give all the details, whether they are receiving any kind of funding and at what stage is their product. We have asked them about the flow chart about their plans,” Bagai said.

The Cluster Innovation Centre – or CIC as it is popularly known – has been designed to seek and derive innovations from industrial clusters, village clusters, slum clusters, and educational clusters.

“Under Cluster Innovation Centre, we used to design an incubation centre funded by the Ministry of Education. There were some successful startups under the DIC.

“During the COVID, these things came to a standstill. We are now restarting that. We are focusing on start-ups,” the director said.

  • Telangana govt invites Governor to address joint Assembly session

Telangana govt invites Governor to address joint Assembly session

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan will be addressing a joint session of the Assembly and the council after a gap of almost a year.

Legislative affairs minister Vemula Prasanth Reddy along with other officials extended the invitation to the governor on Monday following which she approved clearing the annual financial budget, and the Bills pending with her.

The government officials filed a petition in High Court on Monday, seeking direction from the Governor for approval of the introduction of the budget.

However, the petition was closed later in the day after respective counsels struck a compromise.

Legislative affairs minister Prasanth Reddy held talks with chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao at Pragathi Bhavan before calling on the Governor.

He then met the Governor along with special chief secretary (Finance) K Ramakrishna Rao and legislature secretary V Narasimha Charyulu.

Subsequently, a proposal will be sent to the Governor to prorogue the Assembly following which she will summon the Assembly session within a week.

However, it remains uncertain if the Assembly session will be held on the scheduled date or it would be postponed.

Glitch between the Governor and the government

The government last year conducted the budget without the customary address by the Governor, drawing a strong reaction from her.

The BRS government defended its move on the ground that it was not a new session but a continuation of the previous session.

The Budget session of the Assembly and Legislative Council is scheduled to begin on February 3.

With only four days left and no approval of the budget coming from the governor, the government approached the High Court.

The BRS leaders anticipated a crisis as seven Bills passed by the Assembly and Council have been languishing at Raj Bhavan since September last year.

The government has taken exception to the Governor’s delaying approval of the budget. It argued that the Governor’s speech and the Budget presentation were unrelated matters. It also says that there is no clause in the Constitution that requires the Governor to address the Budget session.

The BRS government cited Article 202 of the Constitution, which mandates that a Governor must give permission for presenting before the House a statement of the estimated receipts and expenditures of the state for a financial year.

With the BRS government approaching the court, the friction between the Governor and the government had taken a new turn.
