  • Kashmir Valley’s Aromatic Mushkbudij rice all set to hit International Market

Kashmir Valley’s Aromatic Mushkbudij rice all set to hit International Market

    [ad_1]

    Umaisar Gull Ganie

Anantnag, May 01: Perfect for the region’s cold climate, Mushkbudij, an aromatic rice variety of Kashmir valley, is all set to hit foreign markets as the agriculture department is expanding the cultivation area in the valley due to its huge demand.

Mushkbudji, an aromatic variety of rice grown only in the Valley which has gained GI tag and conservation of the rice variety has been appreciated at state and central level by awarding a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh as “Genome Saviour Community Award”.

As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer, 30 years back, the Mushkbudji rice variety of Kashmir was grown on a large scale. However, its cultivation took a back seat when exotic varieties, which were giving more returns to farmers, were introduced in the valley.

The revival programme started way back in 2007 with the survey of niche areas where these strains could be traced out through different sources. Under the revival programme village Sagam in Kokarnag belt and adjoining villages were identified for demonstration on purified Mushk Budji. In the process of popularizing variety among farmers in mid belts of district Anantnag an excellent example of coordination between SKUAST-Kashmir, department of agriculture and the farming community could be seen.

Figures accessed by KNO reveal that there was around five thousand quintal production of Mushkbudij rice in the last three years in Kashmir valley. “Mushkbudij rice production in Anantnag, Ganderbal and Baramulla district in 2020 was 14.54 quintals, in the year 2021 it was 17.45 quintals while in 2022 it was 17.38 quintals”, figures said.

Figures state that Anantnag district in south Kashmir alone produces 44.86 quantals. “Besides Anantnag, Baramulla and Ganderbal, the cultivation of Muskbudji rice will be expanded to Kulgam and Kupwara districts also”, the date shows

It shows 244 hectares of land under cultivation of Muskbudji rice in 2020, 248 hectares in 2021 and 280 hectares in 2022. “For next five years the proposed plan for expansion of Muskbudji rice in Kashmir valley is 999 hectares of land”, the data states.

Talking to KNO, Dr. Tasneem Mubarak, Chief Scientist Agronomy MRCFC—SKUAST-K said that Mushkbudji was a traditional crop in Kashmir but due to blast disease and new varieties with high yield and disease resistance, people abandoned it.

Leaf blast affected the production following which SKUAST-K started a programme for its revival and all strains were collected, screened and identified varieties for revival. “All aspects have been identified to standardize and demonstrate it in Sagam area of Kokernag belt and presently farmers have been cultivating it well there,” he said.

He said that all such areas are being identified where the environment is favourable for it so that it can be cultivated in other areas but in plains it gets affected. “University developed a blast resistant version of Mushk Budji that can be tried in plain areas but it is still under testing. Demand for it is growing with each passing day,” Tasneem.

Director Agriculture Kashmir Chowdhary Muhammad Iqbal told KNO that Muskbudji rice has got GI tagging and more and more areas are being brought under cultivation. “There is a demand for the same in the international market,” he said. Iqbal said that there were 120 hectares under it and we have taken it to 500 hectare and efforts are on to increase it to 1000 hectares, he said. He said that it costs around Rs 15,000-20,000 per quintal.

International drug cartel busted in Goa, Olympic medallist among 3 held

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Narcotics Control Bureau has busted an international drug cartel in Goa and arrested two Russians – a 1980 Olympic silver medallist woman swimmer and a former policeman – along with an Indian, and seized various drugs including cocaine and charas, an official said on Saturday.

The operation was conducted by the NCB’s Goa unit over the past two weeks, he said.

“Based on a tip-off that a Russian drug cartel was actively operating in Arambol and its adjoining areas in Goa, a probe was launched. As per the intelligence inputs, a Russian woman named S Varganova was found involved in the supply of drugs to foreign nationals. During the investigation, we also received information that led to the identification of a local man named Akash,” the NCB official said.

    MS Education Academy

“During further probe, it was learnt that Akash was part of a larger network and he was working on the directions of a Russian person, who acted as the kingpin of the cartel,” he said.

Immediately after that, Akash was put under discreet surveillance. After extensive intelligence-based operations, a Russian national named Andre was apprehended and 20 LSD blots were seized from him.

Andre revealed that he was growing hydroponic weed at his local residence, the anti-drug agency said.

Thereafter, tree pots of hydroponic weed plants were recovered from his house, the official said.
During the entire operation, different kinds of drugs, including 88 LSD blots, 8.8 grams cocaine, 242.5 grams charas, 1.440 kg hydroponic weed, 16.49 grams hash oil, 410 grams hash cake – were seized along with Rs 4.88 lakh cash, he said, adding that the NCB also recovered Indian and foreign currencies, fake documents, IDs and material required to grow hydroponic weed.

“The arrested Russian woman, S Varganova, is a 1980 Olympic silver medallist in swimming, while Andre is a former policeman from Russia. The latter has been operating a drug cartel in Goa for a long time. He had visited many cities to spread his network and had been managing the well-spread network of street peddlers,” the NCB said.

Along with the Russian nationals, local citizen Akash has also been arrested, the official said, adding that further investigation was on.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said in Panaji the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Goa Police has been cracking down on the illegal drug trade in the state.

He said various agencies in the state are trying to uproot the illegal drug trade and they are working in coordination.

“In the last four years, main drug paddlers have been arrested by ANC,” Sawant told reporters.

  • International trade in rupee currency soon: Piyush Goyal

International trade in rupee currency soon: Piyush Goyal

    [ad_1]

Rajkot: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday expressed hope that traders will soon be able to settle foreign trade in the rupee currency as several banks from different countries are opening special Vostro accounts with Indian banks.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved 60 requests to open Special Rupee Vostro Accounts (SRVAs) of correspondent banks from 18 countries, including the UK, Singapore, and New Zealand.

The RBI, he said, is in discussion with the central banks of other countries on the matter. “We will soon start seeing operationalisation of this rupee trading in international trade with several countries,” Goyal told reporters here.

    MS Education Academy

He also said that negotiations for free trade agreements (FTAs) with developed regions like the European Union, the UK, and Canada are in “advanced” stages.

Groups including European Free Trade Association Free Trade Agreement (EFTA), Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are also keen to start talks for similar pacts with India.

“The whole world wants to have a comprehensive economic partnership agreement with India,” the minister said.

On the second phase of the production-linked incentive scheme for the textiles sector, he said that extensive stakeholder discussions have happened on the subject. “I am quite confident that very soon we will be able to finalise the contours of the scheme and take it up for approval at the highest level,” he added.

Goyal said that Indian textile exporters were earlier facing customs duty disadvantages in developed markets vis-a-vis countries like Bangladesh, but as the government is inking trade pacts with regions like the UAE and Australia, domestic exporters would be able to push shipments.

On promoting sustainability in the textiles sector, Goyal said that the textiles ministry has decided to set up an ESG (environmental, social, and governance commitments) task force.

The task force will come up with suggestions to make the sector more environment-friendly and sustainable.

The textiles ministry has also launched a portal to promote the sale of handicrafts and handloom products.

On the National Textiles Corporation, he said that viability and other issues of its units have been discussed with the Finance Ministry but no final decision has been taken yet.

On pink worms affecting cotton crops in certain places, the minister said that they are in discussion with the agri ministry and scientists to develop pink worm-resistant varieties.

On exports, Goyal said expressed confidence that the USD 100-billion target for the textiles sector would be achieved.

He also said working with industry would help take the industry’s combined domestic and international economic value to USD 250 billion. “It is possible. We will definitely achieve that,” he added.

Goyal was here as part of the Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam which is being conducted under the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ Initiative in Gujarat in Rajkot.

Hyderabad: Meet Arhaan, 18-month-old artist with national, international awards

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Arhaan Sai Gourishetty, an 18 months old artist from Hyderabad has received four international awards, two national awards and many other awards at a tender age.

The kid who is not even two years in age has used 43 techniques to create 50 contemporary fluid art paintings.

The accolades of the artist include the World Book of Records, Asia Book of Records, India Book of Records and Telugu Book of Records Arhaan’s mother Snehitha said that they had introduced Ahaan to painting at a very young age as a sensory activity, and then it was found that he has more interest in painting.

    MS Education Academy

“We introduced painting to our son as a sensory activity. Apart from Arhaan, there are three other kids in my family and thus every weekend would be an art session in our house. Since he was very young, we introduced him to many different activities. Then we saw that Ahaan’s interest is more towards art rather than puzzles,” she said.

She also said that since Ahaan was not able to handle brush at this age, he was introduced to other art forms like fluid arts.

“Ahaan used 43 techniques in his artwork and at the age of 17 months, he was able to do 50 contemporary paintings. As parents, even we were left wondering looking at his work. We as parents do not involve in his artwork-making, don’t even guide him. We just give him the colours and let him explore and play with the colours. We are not worried about how the output would be. However, to our wonder all the paintings come out very well,” she further said.

    ANI 20230420222058

Ahaan’s mother said that they also submitted their son’s works to the World Book of Records and immediately got approval from them. His works were also submitted to some art galleries and curators.

“At the same time, he was able to get four international and two national records also. We don’t have any plans for him as he is just 18 months. If he is interested in arts in the future, he would continue. We have very good family support for any field he chooses to pursue,” she added.

Arhaan’s father, Gourishetty Arun Sai told ANI that their son has been recognised by the Cultural department of central government as well as many more art-cultural societies.

    ANI 20230420222112

“When he was very young, we introduced him to many sensory activities like painting, texture, playing with different materials and others. But, we found that he was more interested in painting and we thought we will pursue this even more so that he could improve further. When he was around 14 months, we let him play with colours. It was more like home learning,” he said.

He added, “Usually, the children of these age groups spill around colours, but instead, Ahaan was more focused on drawing and art. He never used to spill paint outside the canvas board. He is not attending any professional courses now as he is too young to be trained. Whatever he does, it is what comes to him naturally.”

Biden commits $1B to international climate fund

    [ad_1]

    image

Context: The Major Economies Forum was first launched in 2009 and now includes more than two dozen countries that produce 80 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and GDP. It is the first such meeting since last November’s U.N. climate talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where nations agreed to a “loss and damage” fund to pay vulnerable nations for irreparable climate damage.

Poorer nations have ramped up pressure on rich ones to provide more finance for combating climate change. Biden has tried to answer that call with a pledge to deliver $11 billion in climate finance annually by 2024 — but it is unclear how the administration will get House Republicans to approve that spending.

Biden said that nations must work together to reshape multilateral development banks like the World Bank to fight climate change. The Bank concluded its spring meetings last week and laid out an “evolution roadmap” to engage on climate change.

Details: The Biden administration also announced other initiatives, including a new “Methane Finance Sprint” to raise at least $200 million from public and philanthropic sources by the start of the annual U.N. climate talks in November. Biden said the effort would help the U.S. and other countries reach goals to slash methane emissions 30 percent this decade.

Biden also said he would requested $500 million over five years from Congress for the Amazon Fund, an effort to end deforestation.

International Astronomical Center Issues Big Statement Regarding Eid Al Fitr 2023 – Kashmir News

    [ad_1]

Dubai: Eid Al Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, could fall on Saturday, April 22, 2023, according to the International Astronomy Centre.

The exact date will only be confirmed based on the moon sighting, with countries across the Islamic world set to investigate the crescent of the month of Shawwal on Thursday, April 20.

The International Astronomy Centre said in a Twitter post that sighting the crescent on Thursday is nearly impossible with the naked eye or a telescope in most Arab and Islamic countries, except parts of West Africa. Specific conditions, such as an accurate telescope, a professional observer, and exceptional weather, are required for the sighting to be possible.

News WhatsApp Group Links – Join Now

Based on this principle, the centre predicts Eid Al Fitr to fall on Saturday, April 22. The center also clarified that these predictions are based on “astronomical information” and that criteria for the beginning of the month vary across the Islamic world.

The GCC countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait, have already announced Eid Al Fitr holidays for public and private sectors. UAE and Saudi Arabia have declared a four-day weekend, while Qatar has announced an 11-day holiday. Oman and Kuwait will observe a five-day weekend.

The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has called on Muslims to sight the Shawwal crescent on Thursday evening, April 20, and report any sightings to the nearest court or contact center. Muslims with the ability to do so are encouraged to join the committees formed for this purpose and participate in the process of sighting the crescent. (Gulf News)
