Instagram Reels adds dedicated trends section for creators

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta-owned Instagram has announced new features on its short-video making app to empower creators.

The social network has added a dedicated destination for trending audio and hashtags, two new metrics to Reels insights and brought gifts on Reels to more countries.

Creators will now be able to see what the top trending topics and hashtags are on Reels.

    MS Education Academy

“We’re making it easier for you to edit your reels on Instagram by bringing together video clips, audio, stickers, and text on a unified editing screen,” said Meta.

This makes it easier to align and time elements of your reel to the right moments in a more visual way.

This feature is available globally, across both iOS and Android devices.

The two new metrics being added on Reels are total watch time and average watch time.

“Total watch time captures the total amount of time your reel was played, including any time spent replaying the reel. Average watch time captures the average amount of time spent playing your reel, calculated by dividing watch time with the number of total plays,” explained the company.

For example if your average watch time is 17 seconds, out of everyone who watched your Reel they watched an average of 17 seconds.

This will help creators better understand where people are being engaged or where you may need to create a stronger hook to have viewers stay longer.

“We’re also adding a new way to see how your reels are contributing to your growth. You’ll now receive a notification with new followers from your reels,” the company mentioned.

The company is also adding a new feature to show creators which fans have sent them a gift, so they can recognise their supporters.

  • Man held for blackmailing, sexually harassing girls on Instagram

Man held for blackmailing, sexually harassing girls on Instagram

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A 22-year-old man was arrested from Punjab for allegedly sexually harassing minor girls on Instagram, police said on Sunday.

The accused threatened the minors that he will share their morphed nude photos on social media if his demands of “sexual favours” are not met, they said.

He has been identified as Jatin, police said, adding he was nabbed from his native place Kapurthala in Punjab. Police said the accused was working as a waiter in the UAE for the past three years.

The matter came to light in February after a minor girl complained that she was being blackmailed by an unidentified Instagram user who had nine different Instagram IDs, they said.

The accused created morphed nude photographs of the victim and sent them to her on her Instagram account, police said.

According to the complainant, the man started demanding her nudes by threatening her that he will share these morphed nude pictures in her school group. She became scared and sent her nudes to him with the promise that he will put an end to his nonsense. But after getting her photographs, the accused started demanding sex from her and asked her to meet him in a hotel in Paharganj. The girl refused and narrated the incident to her parents and teachers, police said.

Thereafter, the victim’s father approached Cyber West police station and a case was registered, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ghanshyam Bansal said during the course of the investigation, a police team established communication with Meta Platforms Inc and obtained the details of the suspect’s Instagram IDs used by him for blackmailing the minor girls.

After obtaining the details from Instagram, it was learned that the accused has registered all the Instagram ID’s by using a UAE mobile number. Thereafter, with the help of technical surveillance, his identity was revealed as Jatin and he was arrested from Kapurthala, Punjab, the police officer said.

“During interrogation, the accused confessed to his crime and disclosed that he was working as a waiter in the UAE for the last three years. While in the UAE, he indulged in blackmailing minor girls based in India with a promise to meet them when he will return to India,” Bansal said.

“He (accused) belongs to a middle-class family and had dreams to live a lavish life but due to the shortage of money, he could not get his dreams fulfilled. So, he started targeting minor girls for fulfilling his ill desires,” he said.

Three mobile phones containing data of blackmailing and extortion were seized from him, police said.

  • It’s not just TikTok: French also warn against WhatsApp, Instagram

It’s not just TikTok: French also warn against WhatsApp, Instagram

    [ad_1]

PARIS — In a typically French move, France’s top lawmakers are refusing to side with the United States and single out China’s TikTok.

This week, top members of France’s National Assembly strongly encouraged fellow MPs to “limit” their use of social media apps and messaging services, according to a damning internal email seen by POLITICO. The recommendation does include Chinese-owned TikTok — at the heart of a storm on both sides of the Atlantic — but also features American platforms such as Snap and Meta’s WhatsApp and Instagram, alongside Telegram, founded by Russian-born brothers, and Signal.

“Given the particular risks to which the exercise of their mandate exposes MPs using these applications, we wish to appeal to your extreme vigilance and recommend that you limit their use,” wrote Marie Guévenoux and Eric Woerth from Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party and Eric Ciotti from conservative Les Républicains.

France’s narrative of putting Chinese and American companies in the same basket is in stark contrast to moves by other European countries, including the Dutch government, which decided to target apps from countries that wage an “offensive cyber program” against the Netherlands, such as China, Russia, North Korea and Iran.

But refusing to pick sides and follow the United States’ geopolitical lead is a long political tradition in France, which is often accused of anti-American bias. During the Cold War, French President Charles de Gaulle tried to position his country as an alternative between the U.S.’s capitalism and the Soviet Union’s communism.

“France has not mourned the loss of its power and is trying to resurrect the so-called third way, also carried by [European commissioner] Thierry Breton,” said Asma Mhalla, a tech geopolitics lecturer at Columbia University and Sciences Po. “This will serve as a political argument to put French sovereignty and French tech back on the table,” she added, arguing that the next step will likely be to promote French apps instead.

And indeed, the top lawmakers’ letter encourages members of parliament to use French software WIMI for project management and collaborative work.

Their main issue with foreign social media apps is that Chinese and American laws are extraterritorial. The personal data gathered via the platforms — including contacts, photos, videos, and both professional and personal documents — could be used by foreign intelligence services, they argued in their email.

During Macron’s tenure, France has fought tooth and nail against the U.S. Cloud Act, a piece of legislation that allows American authorities to seize data stored on American servers even if they’re located abroad. Paris has even come up with a specific set of rules for cloud services to try and shield European data from Washington’s extraterritorial reach.

In China, an intelligence law also requires domestic technology companies to hand over data to state authorities on subjects anywhere in the world.

“The U.S. are well aware that all their arguments used against TikTok — namely that Chinese law is extraterritorial — awkwardly echo what the Europeans have been reproaching them for some time,” said Mathilde Velliet, a researcher in tech geopolitics at the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI).

“On the other hand,” she added, “the U.S. also believes they cannot be put on the same footing as China, because they’re a European ally with a different political and security relationship, and because it’s a democracy.”

Washington and EU capitals including Paris and Brussels also engage in dialogue on data security issues and cyber espionage, which is not the case with Beijing.

In the National Assembly’s corridors, however, the top lawmakers’ decision to call out foreign platforms from both the U.S. and China was very much welcome. “It’s all starting to look like a third way, which would be European sovereignty,” said Philippe Latombe, an MP from Macron’s allied party Modem. “And that’s good news.”
