Meta purges 43 mn bad content on FB, Insta in March in India

New Delhi: Meta said that it took down over 38.4 million pieces of content across 13 policies for Facebook and over 4.61 million pieces of content across 12 policies for Instagram in March in India.
Between March 1-31, Facebook received 7,193 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism, and said that it provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 1,903 cases.
These include pre-established channels to report content for specific violations, self-remediation flows where they can download their data, avenues to address account hacked issues etc, said Meta in its monthly report in compliance with the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

“Of the other 5,290 reports where specialised review was needed, we reviewed content as per our policies, and we took action on 1,300 reports in total. The remaining 3,990 reports were reviewed but may not have been actioned,” Meta added.
On Instagram, the company received 9,226 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism.
“Of these, we provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 4,280 cases,” it informed.
Of the other 4,946 reports where specialised review was needed, Meta reviewed content and took action on 1,656 reports in total.
The remaining 3,290 reports on Instagram were reviewed but may not have been actioned.

Under the new IT Rules 2021, big digital and social media platforms, with more than 5 million users, have to publish monthly compliance reports.
“We measure the number of pieces of content (such as posts, photos, videos or comments) we take action on for going against our standards. Taking action could include removing a piece of content from Facebook or Instagram or covering photos or videos that may be disturbing to some audiences with a warning,” said Meta.

Goa cops issue summons to two sisters over posts spreading religious hatred on Insta

Panaji: The crime branch of Goa police has summoned two sisters against whom a case has been registered for allegedly spreading religious hatred against the majority community through their posts on Instagram, an official said on Tuesday.
The police had last week registered a suo moto case against two Instagram accounts over posts that were derogatory in nature and hurt religious sentiments, he said.
Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Nidhin Valsan told PTI that the twin sisters have been summoned on April 27 as a part of the investigation in the case.

The summons are issued to the sisters under section 41 (A) of the Criminal Procedure Code, 153-A (hurting religious sentiments) and section 67 of the Information Technology Act, it was stated.

Insta restores Pornhub account ‘in error’ for few hours, shuts down again

San Francisco: Meta-owned Instagram reinstated adult website Pornhub account on the platform in “error” on Sunday for a few hours but then shut it down again.
The company said that Pornhub’s Instagram account came back online for a few hours Sunday — but that was a mistake, reports ‘Variety’.
“This was done in error, a Meta spokesperson was quoted as saying.
“As we’ve said previously, we permanently disabled this Instagram account for repeatedly violating our policies,” it added.
In September last year, Instagram permanently disabled the account of Pornhub for repeatedly violating its policies.
Pornhub defended its position, stating that those in the adult industry “have for years been undermined by Instagram’s opaque, discriminatory and hypocritical enforcement of its own Terms and Policies”.
Moreover, a representative from Pornhub stated that “within hours of reinstating our Instagram account, Meta has demonstrated that its policies have no rhyme or reason when they deactivated our account again, despite not violating any guidelines. This comes at a time of increased censorship and discrimination against performers in the adult space when platforms like Instagram should be inclusive and provide safe communities for creators to express themselves”.
“Instead, Meta and Instagram’s haphazard and irrational enforcement of their policies place undue hardships on the livelihoods of those in the adult industry, an already marginalised group. We call on Meta to once again reverse its decision,” it added.

In December last year, YouTube banned Pornhub’s channel due to multiple community guidelines violations.
According to Google, Pornhub’s account violated YouTube’s external link policy, which forbids users from linking to content that is not allowed on the platform such as pornography.

Insta influencer fined Rs 17k for violating rules while making reel on highway

Ghaziabad: An Instagram influencer, who stopped her car midway on an elevated road on a highway to make a reel, has been fined Rs 17,000 for violating road safety norms.
The video of social media influencer, identified as Vaishali Chaudhary Khutail, who has 6,52,000 followers on Instagram, has gone viral on social media.
In the video, she could be seen stopping her car midway on an elevated road on a highway. She is then seen walking on the roadside and striking several poses as other vehicles pass by the video shows.
The Ghaziabad Police took note of the video after it went viral on the social media platform.
“Charges were registered at Sahibabad police station in connection with the viral video on social media in which a girl could be seen making a reel on an elevated road. The girl’s vehicle has been challaned Rs 17,000,” the Ghaziabad police said in a tweet while sharing the copy of the challan.
