The incident occurred in the bars and restaurants area along Tel Aviv’s seaside promenade, Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said in a statement, adding the victim was a man in his 30s.

According to a police statement, the assailant rammed his car into passers-by before stepping out and starting to shoot. He was shot dead by a police officer at the scene.

The attacker was identified as an Arab citizen of Israel from Kafr Qasim, east of Tel Aviv, state-owned Kan TV news reported.

Also on Friday, two British-Israeli sisters, respectively aged 16 and 20, were killed in a drive-by shooting in the northern West Bank, and their mother was critically injured, according to Magen David Adom.

Following the attack in Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the border police and military to call up reserve forces “in the wake of terrorist attacks”, according to a statement issued by his office.

The attack occurred amid escalating violence between Israel and the Palestinians, triggered by Israeli raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a flashpoint holy site in East Jerusalem, earlier this week.

SRINAGAR: At least 14 Palestinians have been injured and hundreds arrested in an Israeli police raid on Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque, triggering clashes in the West Bank, cross-border strikes in the Gaza Strip and fears of wider escalation over the holiday period, media reports said.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said 14 people sustained wounds from rubber-tipped bullets, beatings, teargas inhalation and stun grenades, and added that Israeli forces had prevented its medics from reaching the area. Firas al-Jibrini, a Palestinian lawyer, said police arrested about 500 people who were taken for questioning.

As per media reports, Israeli police said they moved in after “several law-breaking youths and masked agitators” brought fireworks, sticks and stones and barricaded themselves into the mosque. Police said the youths chanted violent slogans and locked the front doors.

The Temple Mount, located in occupied East Jerusalem and holy to both Jews and Muslims, is regularly the scene of violence. This year’s overlap of Ramadan and Passover, however, increases the possibility of friction as the city hosts an unusually large influx of pilgrims.

Al-Aqsa is the third-holiest site in Islam and is typically packed with worshippers during Ramadan.

Gorakhpur: A man climbed on top of the Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)-Gorakhpur super-fast express and suffered severe burn injuries when he touched a 25,000-volt overhead high-tension electric wire with his bare hands.

The victim was identified as Prithvi Paswan, 45, of Vishwanathpur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district.

He has been shifted to Bahraich district government hospital in a critical condition.

According to Railways, the incident took place between the borders of the Bahraich and Gonda districts (Jarwal road railway station to Sarju railway station).

The express was abruptly stopped by loco-pilots, who discovered an infant’s mortal remains on the railroad track.

Prithvi ascended the locomotive as the train loco-pilots waited for the track to clear.

In a viral video, Prithvi was seen grabbing a high-voltage power cable with his bare hands even after repeated appeals by other passengers to get down from the rooftop of the engine.

Chandra Mohan Mishra, the senior divisional security commandant of Lucknow division of North-Eastern Railway, said, “The local police of Jarwal road took custody of the infant’s body while the severely burned Prithvi was shifted to Bahraich government hospital. The RFP team did not find any ticket with Prithvi, so it is not clear whether he was travelling in Mumbai LTT-Gorakhpur super-fast express or was a passerby who climbed atop the loco-engine while it was halted.”

  • West Bengal: Clashes in Hooghly’s Rishra during Ram Navami rally, BJP says MLA injured

West Bengal: Clashes in Hooghly’s Rishra during Ram Navami rally, BJP says MLA injured

    [ad_1]

Rishra: Clashes broke out between two groups during a Ram Navami procession in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday evening, police said.

BJP vice-president Dilip Ghosh, who was in the procession, told PTI that the incident happened on GT Road in Rishra police station area.

People in the procession were walking peacefully to the Jagannath temple in Mahesh when stones were hurled at it, he alleged.

    MS Education Academy

A senior officer of the Chandannagar Police said the clash broke out around 6.15 pm.

“The procession was going through the traditional route when one group started throwing stones at it. We took immediate steps to address the situation,” the IPS officer told PTI.

Quick action was taken by the police and the situation is now under control, she said.

A heavy police deployment has been made in the area to prevent any further flare-up, the officer said.

BJP’s Pursurah MLA Biman Ghosh was injured in stone pelting and rushed to a hospital, Ghosh said.

“There were many women and children in the procession who were walking with saffron flags in their hands. Suddenly, stones were hurled at us from one side of the road. Several policemen were also injured in the stone-pelting even though I and some other leaders were rescued and taken out of the area through adjacent lanes,” he claimed.

“Police finally managed to chase away the trouble-makers after being silent spectators for a while,” he alleged.

The ruling TMC questioned what was the need to organise the procession two days after Ram Navami.

“Why are they so bent to take out Ram Navami processions during the holy month of Ramzan? Why the Ram Navami rally was taken out two days later? The BJP wants to engineer riots in Bengal to create instability for political gains,” TMC spokesperson Joyprakash Majumdar told PTI.

BJP is trying to instigate trouble by taking religious processions to certain sensitive pockets, he said, adding that it was creating such a situation to demand President’s rule in the state.

Majumdar also claimed that those in the rally were carrying weapons such as swords, which created panic among the people.

Violence during Ram Navami celebrations rocked parts of neighbouring Howrah district on Thursday and Friday. Over 45 people were arrested, prohibitory orders were imposed and internet was suspended to bring the situation under control.
