India’s forex reserves decline for third week

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: India’s foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 5.681 billion to USD 561.267 billion in the week ending on February 17, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s latest data.

This is their third consecutive week of decline in the overall forex reserves.

During the week that ended on February 3, the reserves declined by USD 8.319 billion to USD 566.948 billion.

According to RBI’s latest data, India’s foreign currency assets, the biggest component of the forex reserves, declined USD 4.515 billion to USD 496.072 billion.

Gold reserves declined by USD 1.045 billion to USD 41.817 billion.

At the start of the last year 2022, the overall forex reserves were at about USD 633 billion. Much of the decline can be attributed to RBI’s recent intervention and a rise in the cost of imported goods.

In October 2021, the country’s foreign exchange reserves reportedly touched an all-time high of about USD 645 billion.

The forex reserves had been intermittently falling for months now largely because of the RBI’s intervention in the market to defend the depreciating rupee against a surging US dollar.

Typically, the RBI, from time to time, intervenes in the market through liquidity management, including through the selling of dollars, with a view to preventing a steep depreciation in the rupee.

The RBI closely monitors the foreign exchange markets and intervenes only to maintain orderly market conditions by containing excessive volatility in the exchange rate, without reference to any pre-determined target level or band. (ANI)

  • India’s first marina to come up at Byndoor in coastal Karnataka: CM Bommai

India’s first marina to come up at Byndoor in coastal Karnataka: CM Bommai

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: To promote coastal tourism in Karnataka, the country’s first marina will be constructed at Byndoor in the Udupi district, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

After seeking permission from the central government for the relaxation of Coastal Regulation Zone rules, it is proposed to take up beach tourism in coastal areas and pilgrim tourism, Bommai said.

Speaking at a function ‘Seven Wonders of Karnataka’ hosted by Kannada Prabha and Asianet Suvarna News, Department of Tourism here on Saturday, he said the history of the greatest dynasties such as Ganga, Kadamba, Rashtrakoota, Chalukya and Hoysala will be collected from the Department of Archaeology to develop the historic tourism. This will not only in the development of tourism but also help people understand the rich history of Karnataka.

The CM said the government proposed to build a corridor of the ancient temples like Madhukeshwara in Banavasi and Dattatreya in Ganagapura and promote ‘Yatra tourism’. Instructions are given to develop the Benakal area. The development of the Anjanadri Betta is ongoing. A scheme has been chalked out to pay a monthly honorarium of Rs 5000 to the recognised tourist guides. More facilities will be provided to them from the government side.

Bommai said the government will extend all the cooperation to the ‘Seven Wonders of Karnataka’ programme to give a new direction to tourism. If the Suvarna News Channel, as part of searching the hidden Seven Wonders, shared information about 5,000 places that they have discovered, the government will take steps to develop tourism in those places. The news channel must hold such programmes every year and the government will support such ventures. Every village has historic relics that need to be researched.

He said creation is amazing but the vision of man is much bigger. The creation starts with five elements and there is a wonder in big boulders, hills, hillocks, and seabed. None can imagine the sculpturing of the statue of Bahubali in Shravanabelagola. The architecture of Gol Gumbaz in Vijayapura and the Whispering Gallery shows the concept of wireless during those days.

“We must enjoy nature’s beauty and it must be protected. I congratulate Suvarnanews and Kannada Prabhua for finding out the Seven Wonders of Karnataka.”

He said travelling is a man’s natural habit and this has paved the way for development.

“Karnataka is blessed with nature’s bounty. It has a 350 km coastal area, 10 different weather zones, 400 km of the Western Ghats, a rich biodiversity where the sunrays will be there for 300 days, and several rivers. Nature is on their side but they cannot go against it. For this reason, the green budget had been prepared. The damage caused to nature must be corrected immediately,” the CM added.

  • Lithium discovery important for India’s EV push but mining poses serious environmental risks: Experts

Lithium discovery important for India’s EV push but mining poses serious environmental risks: Experts

    [ad_1]

New Delhi, Feb 24: The discovery of lithium in Jammu and Kashmir is significant for India’s push towards electric vehicles but any environmental gains could be negated if it is not mined carefully, say experts, citing risks such as air pollution and soil degradation in the fragile Himalayan region.

The Geological Survey of India recently identified a potential deposit of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium in Reasi district’s Salal-Haimana area, the first such anywhere in India, which imports lithium. GSI said the site is an “inferred resource” of the metal, which means it is at a preliminary exploration stage, the second of a four-step process.

The discovery of lithium deposits can be a potential “game changer” for the country’s clean energy manufacturing ambitions in several ways, said Siddharth Goel, senior policy advisor at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

“First of all, the scale of the reserves is significant, and can — if proven to be commercially viable — reduce India’s reliance on imports of lithium-ion cells, which are a key component for EV batteries and other clean energy technologies,” he said.

But there is a flip side too.

“Reports indicate that approximately 2.2 million litres of water are needed to produce one tonne of lithium. Further, mining in the unstable Himalayan terrain is fraught with risks,” cautioned Saleem H. Ali, distinguished professor of Energy and the Environment at the University of Delaware.

Lithium mining in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia, for instance, has led to concerns over soil degradation, water shortages and contamination, air pollution and biodiversity loss.

“This is because the mining process is extremely water-intensive, and also contaminates the landscape and the water supplies if not done in a sustainable method,” Ali said.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), about a fourth of the Earth’s known lithium deposits (88 million tonnes) would be economical to mine, said Charith Konda, energy analyst, Electricity Sector at at US-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).

“Applying this benchmark, India could probably economically extract 1.5 million tonnes of lithium from the 5.9 million tonnes discovered in preliminary studies,” Konda told PTI.

Economically here would mean that the resources and technology used to extract will give good return in terms of usage of the resource.

“India has a vision of increasing the share of electric vehicle sales to 30 per cent in private cars, 70 per cent in commercial vehicles, 40 per cent in buses, and 80 per cent in two- and three-wheelers by 2030. In absolute numbers, this could translate to 80 million EVs on Indian roads by 2030,” Konda said.

The battery pack of an average electric car, he explained, requires 8 kg of lithium. By this metric, India’s economically extractable lithium reserves should be enough to power 184.4 million electric cars.

Currently, India is import dependent for several elements such as lithium, nickel and cobalt. Ministry of Commerce data shows that India spent around Rs 26,000 crore importing lithium between 2018-2021.

In 2021, preliminary surveys by Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) showed the presence of lithium resources of 1,600 tonnes in Mandya District in Karnataka. However, there has been no report of mining the resource till date.

An IISD study found that access to critical elements such as lithium is a key challenge faced by companies investing in India’s EV ecosystem.

“These reserves could potentially be a huge carrot to attract investment into domestic battery manufacturing and other clean energy technologies,” Goel said

The potential site in Reasi has the same amount of lithium as the reserves in the US and more than China’s current reserves which are around 4.5 million tonnes.

However, the world’s largest lithium reserves in South America — especially in Bolivia, Chile and Argentina — are several times greater, collectively over 40 million metric tonnes.

According to University of Delaware’s Ali, domestic supply of usable lithium, if developed, could help develop batteries for solar and wind storage and EV usage.

What is critical in this scenario is the government putting in place the right support to make sure that securing these critical minerals is done in a socially and environmentally responsible manner, experts agree.

Environmentalists also argue that the focus should be on redesigning cities to reduce car usage in general instead of using metals like lithium to shift to EVs.

“This could specially be done in high density population centres of India with smarter urban planning,” Ali said.

This is because even when safeguards try to limit the social and environmental harm around fossil fuel extraction, which is considerable, there is no “fix” for air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, IISD’s Goel added.

“Given that lithium-ion batteries are the most advanced batteries available, they would continue to play a major role for the foreseeable future. India should mine lithium with proper environmental and social safeguards in place given the ecological and political sensitivities of the area,” IEEFA’s Konda said.–(PTI)

UAE willing to contribute to India’s 500-GW clean energy goal: COP28 president-designate Al Jaber

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The UAE will explore all opportunities of partnership with India to contribute to New Delhi’s high-growth-low-carbon pathway, Sultan Al Jaber, the COP28 president-designate, said on Wednesday.

He also said the goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial level is “just non-negotiable”.

Al Jaber said India is on its way to becoming the third largest economy in the world and this makes it one of the largest consumers of energy. As such, India’s sustainable development is critical not just for itself but for the whole world.

“India’s goal of adding 500 gigawatt of clean energy in next seven years is a true and a powerful statement of intent. As one of the largest investors in renewable energy, the UAE and Masdar (renewable energy investing firm) will explore all opportunities of partnership with India to contribute to its high-growth-low-carbon pathway,” he said.
“Keeping the goal of 1.5 (degrees Celsius) alive is just non-negotiable. And, it is also clear that we cannot continue business as usual. It simply won’t get us there,” the UAE’s climate envoy said at the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) organised by The Energy and Resources Institute here.

“We need a true, comprehensive paradigm shift in our approach to adaptation, mitigation, finance and loss and damage,” he said.

Keeping the goal of 1.5 degrees Celsius alive means taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming 1.5 degrees Celsius from the pre-industrial level to and prevent the worst impacts of climate change.
