In a tweet, the mission also urged the Indians to stay calm and wait for updates.
Explosions and clashes were reported in various areas in Khartoum in the backdrop of escalating tension between a paramilitary force and Sudan’s Army.

“Notice to all Indians. In view of reported firings and clashes, all Indians are advised to take utmost precautions, stay indoors and stop venturing outside with immediate effect. Please also stay calm and wait for updates,” the Indian mission tweeted.

The military captured power in a coup in October 2021 and it has been running the country through a sovereign council since then.

There has been a dispute between the Army and the paramilitary over a proposed timeline for handing over power to a civilian government.

According to the official data , the number of Indians in Sudan is around 4,000 including 1,200 who have settled down in the country decades ago.

  • ‘Anti-nationals’ are those misusing power to divide Indians: Sonia Gandhi

‘Anti-nationals’ are those misusing power to divide Indians: Sonia Gandhi

    [ad_1]

    New Delhi:
Launching a scathing attack on the government on B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday alleged that the regime in power is “misusing and subverting” the institutions of the Constitution, and the people must act to defend the Constitution from this “systematic assault”.

Penning an article in The Telegraph on the 132nd birth anniversary of Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, Gandhi said today the real “anti-nationals” are those who are misusing their power to divide Indians against each other on the grounds of religion, language, caste and gender.

“As we honour Babasaheb’s legacy today, we must remember his prescient warning that the success of the Constitution depends on the conduct of the people entrusted with the duty to govern,” the Congress parliamentary party president said.

    MS Education Academy

She alleged that today, the regime in power is misusing and subverting the institutions of the Constitution, and weakening its foundations of liberty, equality, fraternity and justice.\

Gandhi alleged that liberty is “threatened” by misusing the law to harass people rather than to protect their rights and equality is “assaulted” by “favoured treatment to chosen friends” in every sphere, even as the vast majority of Indians suffer economically.

“Fraternity is eroded by deliberately manufacturing an atmosphere of hatred and polarising Indians against each other. The resultant injustice is amplified by pressuring the judiciary through a sustained campaign,” Gandhi said.

At this junction in our nation’s history, people must act to defend the Constitution from this “systematic assault”, she said.

“All Indians wherever they stand political parties, unions and associations, citizens in groups and as individuals must play their parts at this critical time. Dr. Ambedkar’s life and struggle teaches critical lessons which can serve as a guide,” the former Congress president said.

She said the first lesson is to vigorously debate and disagree, but ultimately work together for the nation’s interest.

The history of India’s freedom struggle is full of sharp disagreements among Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, and many others, she noted.

These debates naturally attract interest, as they offer many perspectives on serious questions about our future, she added.

“But we must not forget that ultimately, all the eminent men and women who fought for our freedom worked together for our independence and to shape our nation. Their ups and downs at different times only shows that they were fellow travellers on a common journey, and they were well aware of the fact,” Gandhi said.

Dr Ambedkar’s conduct as the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly’s Drafting Committee exemplifies this principle, she asserted.

She said the second lesson to learn is to encourage a spirit of fraternity, the bedrock of the nation.

“Babasaheb believed deeply in the importance of nurturing a brotherhood of Indians as one people, saying ‘without fraternity, equality and liberty will be no deeper than coats of paint’,” she said.

In his final speech, he discussed how the caste system strikes at the roots of fraternity and called it “anti-national”, Gandhi recalled.

“This phrase is abused by those in power today, but Dr. Ambedkar explained its true meaning the caste system is ‘anti-national’ because it brings about separation, generates jealousy, antipathy in short, because it divides Indians against each other,” she said.

“Today, the real ‘anti-nationals’ are those who are misusing their power to divide Indians against each other on the grounds of religion, language, caste and gender. Thankfully, despite the regime’s efforts, the sense of fraternity runs deep in Indians,” Gandhi asserted.

She cited the example of crores of Indians from all walks of life protesting against religious divisiveness, raising their voices for livelihoods of farmers, and helping each other to their best abilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying those instances prove that sense of fraternity runs deep beyond doubt.

“We must always nurture this sense of brotherhood and defend it from attacks in our households, communities, and organisations,” she said.

The third lesson from Ambedkar is to always fight for social and economic justice, Gandhi said.

“Dr. Ambedkar fought for the rights of Dalits, as well as the rights of all individuals and communities who were marginalised. The system in the Constitution for backward classes and minorities is flexible and expansive, and has enabled progressive action for their welfare,” she noted.

“Today, the challenges of ensuring social justice have taken new forms. The economic reforms of 1991 introduced by the Congress government have increased prosperity, but we now see growing economic inequality,” Gandhi said.

“Reckless privatisation” of public sector units is narrowing the system of reservation which offered security and social mobility to Dalits, Adivasis and OBCs, she argued.

The advent of new technologies is threatening livelihoods but also creating opportunities to organise better, and ensure greater equality, she said.

“The challenge is to learn from Babasaheb Ambedkar and ensure social justice in these changing times, and act on our convictions in our public and private lives,” Gandhi said.

She also quoted Babasaheb Ambedkar’s last words in the Constituent Assembly “If we wish to preserve the Constitution… let us resolve not to be tardy in the recognition of the evils that lie across our path…nor to be weak in our initiative to remove them. That is the only way to serve the country. I know of no better.”

These words must be our resolve in the years to come, Gandhi added.

Ambedkar’s remarkable life remains an enduring inspiration today for all Indians, she said.

  • 74% of Indians concerned about their personal financial situation: Report

74% of Indians concerned about their personal financial situation: Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Around 74 percent of Indians are concerned about their personal financial situation, as opposed to 50 percent globally, while 63 percent of Indian consumers are cutting back non-essential spending altogether, a new report said on Thursday.

According to the 2023 PwC Global Consumer Insights Pulse report, most Indian consumers expect to reduce their expenditure across all surveyed categories over the next six months, a significant decline in planned spend across all categories since the previous pulse survey in June 2022.

“Consumers will continue to demand world-class buying experiences in both physical and digital channels with work cut out for brands to reduce costs, enhance availability, and for ‘going local’. The silver lining here remains the unequivocal growths in adoption of digital channels and the desire to spend more on travel in the coming months,” said Ravi Kapoor, Partner and Leader – Retail & Consumer, PwC India.

    MS Education Academy

Moreover, the report mentioned that the industries, including luxury and premium products, travel, and fashion, expect to see the greatest portion of consumer spending reductions over the next six months, whereas the groceries segment is expected to decline the least.

About 47 percent of Indian consumers say they will shop with retailers that offer free/discounted product delivery.

The report further said that half of the Indian consumers (50 per cent) said rising prices remain the most frequently experienced issue when shopping in-store, supply chain issues also dominate with larger queues and busier store locations (35 per cent), along with product availability (28 per cent), which is also impacting consumer behaviour.

In spite of a planned cut in spending and challenging economic conditions, Indian consumers say they are still willing to pay more for sustainable products.

Over 88 per cent of respondents say they would pay more for a product produced or sourced locally, made from recyclable, sustainable, or eco-friendly materials (87 per cent), or produced by a company with a reputation for ethical practices (87 per cent).

  • Local health board in UK to recruit 900 overseas nurses, mostly Indians: Report

Local health board in UK to recruit 900 overseas nurses, mostly Indians: Report

    [ad_1]

London: A local health board in the UK could be recruiting as many as 900 nurses, mostly from Kerala, in the course of next four years to address workforce shortages, which is as high as 40 per cent in acute care and surgery.

The Swansea Bay University Health Board will hire 350 nurses from overseas in the current financial year, subject to approval by chief executive Mark Hackett, the BBC reported.

A board meeting heard that efforts were being made by the health board and the Welsh government to train and retain more homegrown staff.

    MS Education Academy

The health board employs nearly 4,200 nurses and midwives, with the report saying it had “1,322 nurses and midwives currently over the age of 51 that could retire very soon or over the next few years”.

According to the BBC report, the health board, which is responsible for NHS services in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, said it recruited from the Philippines, Africa and the Caribbean, as well as India.

It would cost about 4.7 million pounds to employ 350 overseas nurses in 2023-24, but this would save 1.5 million pounds in agency and nursing bank costs, the report said.

The report said overseas nurses were offered a Band 5 contract, with a starting salary of 27,055 pounds, but initially received a Band 4 wage until they completed their UK registration.

Band 5 roles are normally filled by newly-qualified nurses, who want to further their experience and skills in nursing.

The Band 4 team is required to support the surgical team.

The health board representatives recently went to Kochi, which led to the employment of 107 nurses, some with 15 years of experience, to help fill the void of Band 5 — filled by newly qualified nurses — within Swansea Bay.

The new recruits — a mixture of medical, surgical and theatre nurses — will start their new roles this month, according to a release by Swansea Bay University Health Board.

Following compliance checks and obtaining a visa, these nurses will face a four-week OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) training programme in the health board’s Nurse Education Training Suite based in Baglan HQ before sitting an exam to attain their Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration.

The decision to recruit specifically from India was based on the country’s high number of quality nurses.

“In countries such as India there is a surplus of trained nurses. Ethically, we can recruit from these countries as they are not being left short of quality nurses. Often, the nurses we interview have only been given 12-month contracts in their home countries, so they are also looking at more long-term commitments, which we can offer,” said Lynne Jones, Head of Nursing Education and Recruitment.

The Swansea Bay University Health Board covers a population of approximately 500,000 people and has a budget of 1.3 billion pounds.

The Health Board says it employs approximately 16,000 members of staff, 70 per cent of whom are involved in direct patient care.

  • 4 Indians among 8 dead as they attempted to enter US illegally from Canada

4 Indians among 8 dead as they attempted to enter US illegally from Canada

    [ad_1]

Toronto: Canadian police have named two of the eight people, including four Indians, whose bodies were found in a marshland area along the US-Canada border, amid an investigation into the circumstances of their deaths.

Bodies of eight persons were recovered last week from the marsh on the riverbank near Akwesasne, a community which straddles Quebec, Ontario and New York state.

Police say the deceased believed to be two families of Indian and Romanian descent were trying to cross into the US from Canada. Among them were two children under the age of three, both Canadian citizens.

    MS Education Academy

On Saturday, police said that four Indian nationals, who they believed were a family attempting to cross into the US, have not been identified.

Citing a source with the police in India, the CBC News reported that at least three of them are family members from Gujarat.

The source said the family members include a man in his 50s and a woman and man in their 20s. The age and gender of the fourth Indian national is unknown at this time, the report said.

The identities of other people recovered of Indian descent have not been released, pending identification and notification of next of kin, the Montreal Gazette newspaper reported.

“The circumstances of their deaths continue to be investigated,” the paper added.

“However, it is known that these families were attempting to enter the United States illegally from Canada,” Akwesasne Mohawk Police said.

Akwesasne officials have named two family members of Romanian descent including a man holding his two children’s passports who were among eight bodies recovered from the St. Lawrence River, near the Quebec-Ontario border.

“One man has been identified as 28-year-old Florin Iordache. Police said he had two Canadian passports in his possession one for his two-year-old child and another for his one-year-old infant whose bodies were recovered,” the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported.

“One woman Florin’s wife and the children’s mother has also been identified as 28-year-old Cristina (Monalisa) Zenaida Iordache,” the report said, quoting the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service statement.

Police found the bodies of five adults and one infant in the marshland on Friday. Another infant and an adult woman were located later. One of the children was a Canadian citizen.

Akwesasne police are working with Immigration Canada to assist with identifying the victims and notifying the next of kin. They are also increasing surveillance on the river.

“Our hearts are with the families of these victims as we try to work through our own grief for precious lives lost in our territory. Our culture and traditions are based heavily around family and it is difficult for us all to imagine the dreams these families had and the sadness of their deaths.

“This heart-wrenching event profoundly demonstrates the human qualities we all share,” said the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.

Grand Chief Abram Benedict said the department is committed to understanding how this tragedy occurred and “how we can work with our police department and partners to prevent it from ever happening again.”

Valene Gray, the owner of the Three Feathers Cafe, said the community has been shaken by the tragedy.

“In the past couple of days, it’s been very heavy, very emotional, customers coming in and they’re sad. You could tell they were upset, you could tell they were hurting,” Gray said on Saturday.

Wanting to offer support to her community, Gray said it was an honour to be hired by the Mohawk council to make sure all of the volunteer searchers were fed.

She said the cafe has provided breakfast sandwiches for the past two days and supper on Friday.

Akwesasne police say there have been 48 incidents of people trying to cross illegally into Canada or into the United States through the Mohawk territory since January, and most of them have been of Indian or Romanian descent.

In January 2022, the bodies of four Indians, including a baby, were found frozen in Manitoba near the Canada-US border.

In April 2022, six Indian nationals were rescued from a sinking boat in the St Regis River, which runs through Akwesasne Mohawk Territory.

  • China granted visas to over 18,000 Indians since January: Diplomat

China granted visas to over 18,000 Indians since January: Diplomat

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: China has issued visas to over 18,000 Indians in the last three months, a Chinese diplomat said.

Interacting with a group of journalists in Kolkata, Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in India, Chen Jianjun, said he was looking forward to more Chinese being given visas by India.

“The number of visa applications for China has been on the rise. Since January, we have given visas to 18,560 Indians,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

“Since August, 9,409 student visas have been issued to Indian students,” he said.

However, Jianjun said, the number of visa applications is yet to reach the pre-pandemic levels.

In June last year, China announced plans to provide visas to Indian professionals and their families stranded in India following the strict restrictions imposed by Beijing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Separately, it also started processing visa applications of thousands of Indian students studying in Chinese universities who conveyed their interest to rejoin their colleges and universities. About 23,000 Indian students, mostly studying medicine were stranded back home due to the restrictions.

Jianjun said China was working with India for an early resumption of direct flights between the two countries.

Flight services between the two countries have been disrupted ever since coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan in late 2019 and spread across the world.

The flight disruption turned out to be a major problem for hundreds of Indian students as well as families of Indians working in China and businessmen to travel back and forth.

Indians are currently travelling to China through Sri Lanka, Nepal and Myanmar, and some other countries, shelling out an exorbitant amount of money on steep airfares.

Jianjun also said that his country was looking forward to a more fair and friendly business environment in India.
