Italy-based Indian man held for impersonating Vice President

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A 22-year-old Indian based in Italy was arrested for allegedly posing as the Vice President of India by creating a fake WhatsApp account using Jagdeep Dhankhar’s picture as his profile display to dupe people and seek favours from senior bureaucrats, police said on Monday.

The accused, Gagandeep Singh, who hails from Jammu, has been living in Offanengo, Italy since 2007 with his family. He studied till Class 9 in India and passed 12th from Italy where he worked as a labour in a company, they said.

Police said that Singh got the idea of impersonation after watching several YouTube videos.

An associate of his, Ashwani Kumar, 29, has also been arrested. Kumar supplied the OTP, or One Time Password, to Singh to create a fake WhatsApp account.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations) Prashant Gautam said that before creating the fake WhatsApp account using a picture of the Vice President, Singh watched several YouTube videos and got contact details of senior government officials from the internet.

“After that, he obtained an OTP from his associate to create a WhatsApp account with an Indian mobile number. After creating the WhatsApp account, he took a picture of the Vice President of India as a profile picture. Using this impersonating account, he started sending messages to senior government officials to seek favours from senior bureaucracy,” he said.

The matter came to light after someone informed the police about the scam, following which a case was registered.

“Immediately, details of the impersonating WhatsApp profile were obtained from WhatsApp and the IP address of the sender was traced to Italy. The team started working on all technical aspects and conducted raids, following which a person identified as Ashwani Kumar, a resident of Samana in Punjab, was apprehended who had shared OTP with the imposter to create the WhatsApp account,” Gautam said.

During its investigation, police identified the main accused as an Indian national — Gagandeep Singh, who was living in Italy.

“The team collected details about the accused from Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Banks and regional passport office and subsequently, the accused was apprehended from IGI airport,” the officer said.

Police said that five mobile phones used in the commission of crime have been recovered from his possession.

Indian Army Changes Agniveer Recruitment Process, Check details

The Indian Army has announced a major change in the Agniveer recruitment procedure as the candidates will have to undergo an online test as the first step.

The process previously involved a physical test followed by a medical test and finally the Common Entrance Examination (CEE) online at designated centres. This amended procedure will be applicable from this year itself. Online registration for this year’s recruitment process will open in mid-February.

In an official notice issued by the Army, it was revealed that the new procedure starts with the online CEE after registration. If the candidates clear the entrance exam, they will be shortlisted for the recruitment rally including a medical examination.

The next step will be the Allocation of Arms and services and those making the final cut will be asked to report at the training centre. “The changed methodology will ensure increased focus on cognitive aspect during selection. It will have wider outreach across the country and also reduce the large crowds seen during recruitment rallies to make them more manageable and easier to conduct,” the notice read. Meanwhile, the candidates can practise for the Agniveer online exam by visiting the Indian Army’s official website where category-wise links are being hosted. They can also check the website for queries on ‘How to register’ and How to Appear in Online Common Entrance Exam’.

  • British Indian Princess Sophia Duleep Singh to get Blue Plaque in UK

British Indian Princess Sophia Duleep Singh to get Blue Plaque in UK

    [ad_1]

London: Sophia Duleep Singh, the daughter of Maharaja Duleep Singh the last ruler of the Sikh empire and the goddaughter of Queen Victoria, is to be honoured with a commemorative Blue Plaque in London.

Princess Sophia was among the leading suffragettes who fought for women’s right to vote in 1900s Britain.

The Blue Plaque scheme, run by the English Heritage charity, honours the historic significance of particular buildings associated with historical figures and its 2023 cohort includes the 19th-century home of the British Indian Princess.

“Daughter of the deposed Maharajah Duleep Singh, who already has a plaque in Holland Park (London), and goddaughter of Queen Victoria, Princess Sophia Duleep Singh was an active suffragette and made full use of her royal title to generate support for female enfranchisement,” notes English Heritage in its Blue Plaque announcement this week.

“She was a dedicated member of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and the Women’s Tax Resistance League (WTRL). The plaque will mark the large house near Hampton Court Palace which was granted to Sophia and her sisters as a grace and favour apartment by Queen Victoria in 1896,” it notes.

British Indian writer Anita Anand, the author of Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary’, expressed her excitement at the historical heroine being recognised with a Blue Plaque.

“Princess Sophia Duleep Singh will finally get the recognition she deserves,” said Anand.

It is among six new plaques unveiled for the year, including fellow suffragette Emily Wilding Davison’s home in Kensington in London and violinist and composer Yehudi Menuhin’s six-storey house in Belgravia, where he lived for the last 16 years of his life.

Others include anti-racism activist Claudia Jones, London’s first female Mayor Ada Salter and Pre-Raphaelite model Marie Spartali Stillman.

“Every year, English Heritage’s blue plaques offer a glimpse of the very best of human achievement,” said William Whyte, architectural historian and Professor of Social and Architectural History at Oxford University, who takes over as the new Chair of the Blue Plaques Panel at English Heritage.

“In my first year as Chair of the panel, I am particularly excited to recognise so many who fought for what they believed in. From Emily Wilding Davison, who famously died for her cause, to Claudia Jones, whose life-long struggle for social justice helped inspire the Notting Hill Carnival, these are people who made a difference and it’s an honour to play a part in making sure that their contributions are remembered,” he said.

Last year, to coincide with the 75th anniversary celebrations of Indian Independence, the south London home where Dadabhai Naoroji lived for around eight years at the end of the 19th century was commemorated with a Blue Plaque.

The prominent member of the Indian freedom struggle and Britain’s first Indian parliamentarian, often referred to as the “grand old man of India”, is reported to have moved to Washington House, 72 Anerley Park, Penge, Bromley, at a time when his thoughts were turning increasingly towards full independence for India in 1897.

That red-brick home now has a plaque which reads: “Dadabhai Naoroji 1825-1917 Indian Nationalist and MP lived here”. He is among several Indian freedom struggle leaders commemorated with plaques, including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

  • Job growth in Indian IT sector slumps 25% amid layoffs

Job growth in Indian IT sector slumps 25% amid layoffs

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Due to corrections in hiring in the IT industry, job growth in the Indian IT sector has declined by 25 per cent this year as compared to last year, a report showed on Thursday.

The hiring intent declined across both large IT giants and unicorns, while trends across other IT startups remained stable as compared to last year, according to a report by naukri.com.

Regarding the hiring dip across experience levels, fresher hiring faces the biggest slump followed by a mid-experience hiring decline, while hiring across senior levels (greater than 12 years of experience) remained stable in IT, the report mentioned.

“As the year begins, Non IT sectors hold the fort for hiring activity in India with insurance, oil and hospitality flying high. Interestingly, IT-linked metros, which were the main growth drivers last year, were overshadowed by emerging cities like Ahmedabad and Baroda,” saidAPawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer, Naukri.com.

In the era of hiring corrections, increasing demand for senior professionals with more than 12 years of experience continues to dominate the hiring activity at the beginning of 2023, recording more than 20 per cent growth vs. last year.

Hiring activity remains stable for freshers and mid-experience level professionals, said the report.

In the New Year, the Indian job market continues to show resilience and stability, said the report.

  • UK business and financial circles describe Indian Budget as very encouraging, stabilising

UK business and financial circles describe Indian Budget as very encouraging, stabilising

    [ad_1]

London: The Union Budget tabled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday has been widely welcomed in the UK business and financial circles as “very encouraging” for the bilateral partnership and also India’s attractiveness as an investment destination.

The highlights flagged by many include the enhanced infrastructure spending focus, which offers great opportunities for foreign investors, and a focus on green growth. A series of measures to tackle the ease of doing business in the country is another aspect of the Budget that has received a big thumbs up.

“The hallmark of the Budget is continuity, stability and fiscally responsible growth,” said Loknath Mishra, MD & CEO of ICICI Bank UK Plc and Chair of the Financial Services Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) UK Council.

“The significant increase in capex allocation will set the country on a sustained growth path. India will emerge stronger as a destination for investment by non-resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign investors,” he said.

Anuj Chande, Partner and Head of South Asia Group, Grant Thornton LLP in London, dubbed the Budget as “very encouraging”, particularly from a foreign investor point of view.

“The message is that private investment must step in and there’s a big opportunity there for foreign investors, particularly UK investors to participate in the building of that infrastructure. The UK has some terrific expertise and talent in the area of road building, railways and airports which can help India achieve the earmarked spend,” said Chande.

The adviser for many UK corporates going into India also welcomed the ease of doing measures unveiled in the Budget, such as plans for 39,000 compliances being reduced.

“As it is, India has been creeping up on the World Bank Doing Business rankings and all these measures will help improve that ranking further,” he said.

“The 7 per cent growth rate that was announced in the Budget is remarkable by any means. UK investors, particularly in the SME and mid-market, have not necessarily focused on India and looked at the market opportunity, both in terms of market access and talent access and the ability to help India in its growth plans. My overall message would be: please do consider India as being a great destination to either trade or invest in,” he added.

Steve Harvey, Director of global services provider Sannam S4 and Chair of the Education Committee of the FICCI UK Council, hailed advances in the skills development sector.

“There are many good reasons to be excited about India’s economy in 2023 and beyond. This year, as India hosts and chairs the G20, there is much for India to be proud of, not least of which are the changes in the education landscape in recent years – including the National Education Policy and the implementation of increased technology-enabled learning, setting the pace for significant skills development for India’s young people,” said Harvey.
