  • Telangana: Kishan Reddy dares KCR for debate on Indian economy

Telangana: Kishan Reddy dares KCR for debate on Indian economy

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Union minister for Tourism and Culture G. Kishan Reddy on Monday said that he is ready for a debate with Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on the country’s economy.

Reacting strongly to CM KCR’s speech made in the state Assembly on Sunday, the central minister alleged that he insulted the country and its hardworking people through his baseless comments.

“We are ready for debate. Will you come to Press Club or martyrs’ memorial or want us to come to Pragati Bhavan or your farmhouse,” asked Kishan Reddy.

The BJP leader also wanted to know from the chief minister if he would come with his resignation letter in his pocket.

Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the most inefficient Prime Minister the country has seen, KCR had reeled out statistics to say that the country is lagging on various economic parameters. The chief minister had said that if the statistics given by him proved wrong he was ready to resign.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Monday, Kishan Reddy remarked that KCR will anyway have to resign after a few months as BJP will come to power in Telangana.

Kishan Reddy alleged that KCR misused his office and the Budget Session of the Assembly to target the Centre and the Prime Minister. He said KCR overstepped his limits to compare India with other countries but did not speak even a word about the state Budget.

He said that KCR spoke out of his ignorance about the state of India’s economy and suggested that he search the data on Google.

Kishan Reddy asked if KCR did not know that during Manmohan Singh’s tenure India was the 11th largest economy in the world but under Narendra Modi, it became the fifth largest economy. He also pointed out that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted that India will overtake Germany to become the fourth largest economy by 2027.

The BJP leader also disputed KCR’s claim on India’s high rate of borrowings and claimed that this is lower than the borrowings of countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. He said that the US’debt to GDP ratio is 120 per cent while for the UK it is 273 per cent. India’s debt to GDP is only 19.9 per cent, he said.

The central minister questioned KCR’s silence on the state’s finance position and claimed that Telangana’s debts, which were Rs 60,000 crore in 2014, have now mounted to Rs 5 lakh crore due to indiscriminate borrowings by KCR government.

He also alleged that thousands of crore of rupees were swindled in Telangana in the name of projects by raising debts.

The BJP leader asked why there was no debate in the Assembly on family rule in Telangana, double bed-room scheme, irregularities in Dharani portal, unemployment allowance and unfulfilled promise to allot three acres of land to every Dalit family.

  • How a distress patient sent a help sign to Indian Embassy from 1500 KM away

How a distress patient sent a help sign to Indian Embassy from 1500 KM away

    [ad_1]

Jeddah: The plight of an impaired person who is confined to the bed in a hospital and inability to convey or relay the language or show any kind of sign following serious stroke is hard to narrate yet he was on the bed for over a year in a remote desert town in Saudi Arabia with only hope that someone would hear and send him to his home in India on one day.

Finally, his plea reached about 1500 KM away at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh that took him to his family and made the reunion.

56-year-old Shaikh Dastagir, native of Madanapalle town in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh was admitted into a hospital in desert town of Nariyah in Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia following brain hemorrhage as result of hypertension a year ago, since then he is in a vegetative state under palliative care.

Unable to speak or move he was confined to bed since then. There were no friends nor any relatives including employer for Dastagir, there was no single visitor nor any enquiry about him.

Sneha and Anu – Indian nurses hailing from Kerala- not only serve him as part of their job but go a mile extra to render humanitarian assistance and often console him with signs.

    WhatsApp Image 2023 02 12 at 7.33.57 PM

Iqama and Passport of Dastagir expired and even he was declared as Huroob – absconder – thus complicated his repatriation thus delayed his discharge from the hospital.

On other hand, the patient’s family back home in Madanapalle town of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh was worrying about their sole breadwinner as there were no calls nor any message from him.

Hamed Al Qaitani, hospital director, drew the attention of his higher officials. The Saudi authorities contacted the Indian Embassy in Riyadh through official channels to repatriate the patient. The ministry of health, foreign affairs and Governorate officials involved in the process.

The poor family was informed about the condition of Dastagir and it expressed its inability to bear any cost of airfare or treatment owing to poverty reasons.

The battery of Indian diplomats led by M.R. Sajeev worked hard to coordinate the repatriation efforts as result of Huroob case and expiry of document in addition to medical evacuation where it required acceptance letter from disembarkation point hospital.

Like these, the Indian embassy reaches its destitute compatriots far-flung remote deserts based

KMCC – the foremost expatriate welfare organization in Saudi Arabia – volunteered to assist in repatriation that goes through multiple places from remote town of Nariyah to Riyadh, from there to New Delhi then Bengaluru and finally Madanapalle.

Ansari, Mahbub, Siddik Tuvoor with the support of Telugu social worker Muzammil Shaikh coordinated the departure and finally the patient has reached his family.

Indian Embassy bore the cost of repatriation including escort along with the patient while AP NRT organization – AP state government arm to deal with NRI affairs – provided the ambulance service from airport to patient native place.

  • Maharajas who played dirty politics and hampered development of Indian cricket

Maharajas who played dirty politics and hampered development of Indian cricket

    [ad_1]

The smooth progress of Indian cricket has frequently been hampered by the whims and egos of the people in power. It happens now and it happened in the past too. Back when Indian cricket was in its nascent stage, the most powerful people in the sport were the wealthy Maharajas. Two of these royal figures, namely the Maharajkumar of Vizianagaram and the Maharaja of Patiala, played a key role in promoting the game but they also indulged in petty politics and treated cricket as their personal fiefdom.

Moreover, the two of them were also at loggerheads with each other and each one tried to become the topmost figure in Indian cricket.

Former diplomat Natwar Singh, who also served as Minister for External Affairs, has written an interesting book about the Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh. Nobody knows the facts better than Natwar Singh because his wife was Princess Heminder Kaur, granddaughter of the Maharaja. There are some interesting anecdotes mentioned by Natwar Singh in his book titled The Magnificent Maharaja.

The ruler of Patiala was an avid cricket fan and did many things to develop the game in India in the 1930s. But he was also given to sudden mood changes like many rulers who enjoyed tremendous power. According to Natwar Singh, the Maharaja used to refer to ace cricketer Lala Amarnath as a “chokra.”

On one occasion he was annoyed with Lala for some reason. He instructed the famed fast bowler Mohammed Nissar to bowl bouncers at Lala and hit him on the head. “If you can hit that chokra on the head, I will give you a village as a jagir,” the Maharaja told the fast bowler. The towering Nissar, then considered being one of the fastest bowlers in the world, tried hard to do the job that the Maharaja had assigned to him. But Lala Amarnath was too quick and skillful. He avoided the ball every time and Nissar had to remain without his promised gift.

Then there was another occasion when the Maharaja’s mood changed in favour of Lala. “Listen here, chokra. For every run you score today I will give you a gold coin,” said Bhupinder Singh. Lala gladly seized the opportunity, scored a century and got a bagful of gold coins from the Maharaja.

As for the Maharajkumar of Vizianagaram, he was a person whose internecine political games often ruined the progress of cricket. His quarrel with Lala Amarnath was famous and is talked about even today. Well known author Mihir Bose has written: “If Vizzy had been content with being a cricket sponsor, his name would be one of the most revered in Indian cricket. But he was consumed with the ambition to be a great cricketer himself.”

His wealth earned him great influence in Indian cricket. In the early thirties, he donated fifty thousand rupees to the BCCI which was starved of funds. It was a huge sum. With some manipulation, Vizzy got himself named as captain of India in 1936 when the Indian team went to England. The senior players in the squad, including Amarnath, C.K. Nayudu and Vijay Merchant were highly displeased with Vizzy’s methods and therefore the team became divided between Vizzy loyalists and rebels.

But worse was to follow. During India’s match against Minor Counties, Amarnath had a back injury. Nevertheless Vizzy made Amarnath pad up, but did not send him to bat. Other batsmen were sent ahead of him. It prevented Amarnath from resting. An angry Amarnath muttered in Punjabi, “I know what is transpiring.” Vizzy took this comment as an affront, and teamed up with the squad manager Major Jack Brittain-Jones to take revenge. Lala Amarnath was sent back to India for indiscipline. It is also alleged that once Vizzy offered Mushtaq Ali gold watch to run out Vijay Merchant.

Such misdeeds earned Vizzy a bad name and an inquiry held after the tour found that Vizzy was the guilty party in the quarrel with Amarnath. Thereafter, Vizzy maintained a low profile and later became an administrator. He also went into politics and became an MP from Visakhapatnam before he passed away in 1965.

  • Appointment of Justice S Abdul Nazeer as AP Governor a blot on Indian democracy: CPI(M) MP

Appointment of Justice S Abdul Nazeer as AP Governor a blot on Indian democracy: CPI(M) MP

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: leader and Rajya Sabha member A A Rahim on Sunday criticised the Centre’s decision to appoint retired Supreme Court judge S Abdul Nazeer, who was part of the 2019 Ayodhya verdict, as Governor of Andhra Pradesh saying it was a blot on Indian democracy.

The move to appoint the retired apex court judge was condemnable as it was not on par with constitutional values of the country, the CPI(M) MP said.

Justice (retired) Nazeer was part of the five-judge Constitution bench which had in November 2019 cleared the way for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) and directed the Centre to allot a five-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for a mosque in a different location.

“The decision of the Union government to appoint Justice Abdul Nazeer as a Governor is not on par with the constitutional values of the country. It is highly condemnable. He (Nazeer) should refuse to take up the offer. The country should not lose the confidence in its legal system. Such decisions of the Modi government are a blot on Indian democracy,” Rahim said in a Facebook post.

The Marxist party leader said the retired judge was appointed in the gubernatorial post within six weeks after his retirement.

“He was a member of the bench which gave the verdict in the Ayodhya case. He had also courted controversy when he took part in the national council meeting of Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad (ABAP) at Hyderabad on December 26, 2021. It’s a Sangh Parivar organisation of lawyers,” Rahim said.

He also pointed out that in a speech at the ABAP meeting, Nazeer opined that “the Indian legal system has been continuously ignoring the legacy of Manusmriti”.

“His words did not reflect the high degree of impartiality and loyalty to the Constitution that a judge serving in the higher judiciary should possess. Now, he has got the Governor post,” Rahim added.

Justice Nazeer, who retired on January 4, has been part of several path-breaking verdicts, including those on the politically sensitive Ayodhya land dispute, instant ‘triple talaq’ and the one that declared ‘right to privacy’ a fundamental right.

He was elevated as an apex court judge on February 17, 2017.

The Justice Nazeer-led five-judge Constitution benches delivered two separate verdicts this year, including the one which by a majority of 4:1 validated the legality of the Centre’s 2016 decision to demonetise the Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denomination currency notes, saying the decision-making process was neither flawed nor hasty.

Turkey earthquake: Indian national’s death leaves family in shock in Uttarakhand

    [ad_1]

Dehradun: The family of Vijay Kumar, who died in the earthquake in Turkey, is in shock.

A resident of Kotdwar in Uttarakhand, Vijay Kumar was on a business trip to Turkey when the earthquake struck. His mortal remains were found and identified among the debris of a hotel in Malatya. He left Kotdwar on January 23.

Kumar’s family members were in deep shock as they came to know of the tragic news. They cried inconsolably. Neighbours and relatives came to Kumar’s residence to express their condolences.

Vijay Kumar is survived by his mother, wife, and six-year-old child. He had lost his father about one-and a half months back.

The Indian Embassy in Turkey informed on Saturday that mortal remains of Kumar have been found.

“We inform with sorrow that the mortal remains of Shri Vijay Kumar, an Indian national missing in Turkiye since February 6 earthquake, have been found and identified among the debris of a hotel in Malatya, where he was on a business trip,” the Embassy said in a tweet.

“Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We are making arrangements for the earliest possible transportation of his mortal remains to his family,” it added.

Ministry of External Affairs had said earlier this month that ten Indians were struck in remote parts of Turkey after the country was hit by two “biggest natural disaster” earthquakes, but they are safe while one citizen is missing.

“There are 10 individuals who are stuck in some remote parts of the affected area but they are safe. We have one Indian national missing, who was on a business visit to Turkey’s Malatya. And he has not been traced for the last two days. We are in touch with his family and the company in Bengaluru,” Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West) in Ministry of External Affairs, had said at a media briefing on ‘Operation Dost.’

The death toll from the earthquakes stood at more than 25,000 across southern Turkey and northwest Syria, reports said.
