India trashes USCIRF report, calls it misrepresentation of facts

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India on Tuesday categorically trashed as “biased” and “motivated” a report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) that alleged “severe violations” of religious freedom in the country.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the Commission continues to regurgitate such comments and India rejects the “misrepresentation of facts” which only serves to “discredit USCIRF itself”.

He also asked USCIRF to develop a better understanding of India, its plurality and its democratic ethos.

    MS Education Academy

“The US Commission on International Religious Freedom continues to regurgitate biased and motivated comments about India, this time in its 2023 annual report,” he said.

“We reject such misrepresentation of facts which only serves to discredit USCIRF itself,” Bagchi added.

“We would urge USCIRF to desist from such efforts and develop a better understanding of India, its plurality, its democratic ethos and its constitutional mechanisms,” he said.

In its annual report on religious freedom, the USCIRF asked the US State Department to designate India as a “country of particular concern” on the status of religious freedom along with several other nations.

The USCIRF has been making similar recommendations to the State Department since 2020, which have not been accepted.

The recommendations of USCIRF are not mandatory for the State Department.

In its India section of the latest report, the USCIRF alleged that in 2022, religious freedom conditions in India continued to worsen.

The US Commission also urged the Biden administration to impose targeted sanctions on Indian government agencies and officials responsible for “severe violations” of religious freedom in the country by freezing their assets.

It also recommended that Congress raise the issue of religious freedom during US-India bilateral meetings and hold hearings on it.

India temporarily relocates embassy from Khartoum to Port Sudan

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India has decided to temporarily relocate its embassy from the violence-hit Sudanese capital city of Khartoum to Port Sudan in view of the prevailing security situation in the African country.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said this on Tuesday.

“In view of the prevailing security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Khartoum will be temporarily relocated to Port Sudan,” it said.

    MS Education Academy

“The situation will be assessed in the light of further developments,” the MEA said.

Port Sudan is a port city on the Red Sea in eastern Sudan. It is located at a distance of around 850 km from Khartoum.

India has been operating military aircraft and naval ships from Port Sudan to evacuate its citizens from the African country.

The Indian embassy in Khartoum is located just opposite to the airport in the city and that zone has seen a lot of fighting.

In the last few days, Indian officials worked round the clock to evacuate Indians, people familiar with the matter said.

No Indian official resides in the embassy complex. They were largely operating from their places of stay in view of the intense fighting.

Under “Operation Kaveri”, India has been taking its citizens in buses from the conflict zones of Khartoum and other troubled areas to Port Sudan, from where they are being taken to the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah in the Indian Air Force’s heavy-lift transport aircraft and Indian Navy’s ships.

From Jeddah, the Indians are being brought back home in either commercial flights or the IAF’s aircraft. India has set up separate control rooms in Jeddah and Port Sudan.

“The Embassy may be approached at following numbers: +249 999163790; +249 119592986; +249 915028256 and E-mail: cons1.khartoum@mea.gov.in,” the MEA said in a statement.

Hyderabad: Over 200 attend 3-day Wiki Conference India 2023

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Readers in India visit Wikipedia and its other projects more than 797 million times each month, the fifth highest number of views from any country, said the organisation on Tuesday.

Wiki Conference India 2023 (WCI 2023), a conference of Indian and South Asian contributors to Wikipedia and its other projects was held in Hyderabad on May 2.

Wikipedia said in a press release that Indian volunteers are integral and valued contributors to the website, which is available in 24 languages spoken across India. In addition, Indian volunteers contribute to the wider ecosystem of Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource and Wikidata, and also help in improving technology development and features on Wikimedia websites.

    MS Education Academy

“India continues to be a key region of expansion for Wikimedia’s knowledge communities, with a growing number of volunteer contributors and enormous potential to expand our reader base in the country. Wikiconference India is an opportunity to celebrate our local communities and their achievements in increasing access to free knowledge across languages,” said the chief advancement officer of the foundation, Lisa Seitz-Gruwell

Lisa added that the weekend’s event created an important platform to enable active growth and collaboration within the South Asia region.

“Wiki Conference India stands as a testament to the power of leadership and community collaboration in advancing knowledge-sharing and creating a more informed society. Through trust building and language diversity, this conference has become a vital platform for community members to connect, collaborate and contribute to the growth of Wikimedia’s global communities,” said the lead volunteer coordinator for WikiConference Nitesh Gill.

“It is encouraging to see the sheer enthusiasm and participation of Wikimedians at WCI 2023, and I am looking forward to seeing its impact on the development of open knowledge in not only India but the broader South Asia region. I hope this conference provides the grounds needed for further community growth and engagement,” said Nivas Ramisetty, WikiConference India coordinator.

The event was co-organised with a local partner, IIIT Hyderabad and was supported by the Telangana Department of Language and Culture who arranged a cultural dance show and excursion tour.

The three-day conference which was attended by over 200 people concluded on Sunday evening. The conference explored ways to increase the access and sharing of Indian history, culture and experiences on free knowledge projects globally. Participants from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka met for the first time since 2016.

The conference provided a common platform for Wikimedians (volunteer contributors and Wikimedia Foundation staff members), invitees and stakeholders interested in Indic-language Wikimedia projects and other aspects of the movement in India and South Asia.

WCI 2023 centred around the theme of “Strengthening Bonds,” chosen to underscore the vital role of building and maintaining robust connections within Wikimedia’s open source communities. The theme was rooted in the belief that a strong support system and opportunities for cross-learning are essential for achieving collective success.

KTR inaugurates Flipkart’s FC, says ‘What Telangana does today, India does tomorrow’

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Industries and Commerce and Information Technology minister KT Rama Rao on Tuesday invited e-commerce giant Flipkart to work with the government to create a unique Telangana model and said, “What Telangana does today, India does tomorrow.”

Minister KTR inaugurated the Flipkart Sangareddy Fulfillment Center (FC) virtually along with the company’s leadership. Speaking at the event he said, “There was a saying that ‘What Bengal does today, India does tomorrow,’ it has now changed to ‘What Telangana does today, India does tomorrow.”

He said that as a market leader in India, Flipkart should lead the initiative so as to create a unique model that the country can follow.

    MS Education Academy

“Let’s make a statement to India, which is like talking to one-fifth of the world’s population. This can also be a shining example to the rest of the developing world,” said KTR.

He invited the Retailers Association of India (RAI) and the e-commerce groups to create a readily employable workforce in tandem with the Telangana Academy for Skills and Knowledge (TASK).

He said that we live in a world where the largest bookseller, and fashion goods sellers do not own a single brick-and-mortar store. The largest transporter does not own a single vehicle and E-commerce has redefined as to how we think and work.

KTR said, “Each and every day, my wife and daughter order something online and the boxes keep rolling in, it’s interesting how India has adapted to buying and selling things online”.

He said that he was very happy to hear that Flipkart has created 40,000 jobs in Telangana. But said that the 40,000 people should feel that their jobs are ensured and not at the whim of the markets.

He invited the e-commerce companies to create a tri-partite arrangement between the government, vendors and partners so that Telangana make a statement to the country.

KTR said that gig economy jobs have to be taken care of adding that several young people send him messages saying that they are working temporarily in e-commerce companies for the lack of better opportunities.

He urged e-commerce companies to ensure that people aspire to work with them with an assurance that they can earn a decent living.

The minister said that the central location of Telangana makes it a good hub for the transportation and dissemination of goods to the rest of the country.

“We have strong Self Help Groups (SHG) of women in the state. Flipkart seems to have struck some kind of balance with 25 percent of women in the workforce. I request the company to consider creating a fulfilment centre that is completely run by women, at least in the day hours,” said KTR.

He said that the company can work with the government through Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) and the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) to create a win-win situation.

“I asked how we could continue to attract global leaders to Telangana and the answer I received from the Flipkart chief executive officer, Kalyan Krishnamurthy was interesting. He said two keywords, Quality and Compliance,” said the minister.

He said that while encouraging the industries to expand, create new jobs, and livelihood opportunities, the government of Telangana will not compromise on workers’ rights and will not encourage exploitation.

The minister said that while ‘quality’ applies to goods and services that are created, it also certainly applies to ensuring that there are no sweatshops in Telangana and India. He said that he looks forward to the expansion of the industry with a socially responsible private sector.

India urges G20 countries to collaborate, focus on evidence-based research

    [ad_1]

Washington: Ahead of the annual India-US BioPharma and Healthcare Summit to be attended by scientists, academicians, corporate leaders, and officials from both the countries, a top Indian official has urged the G20 countries to collaborate and focus on evidence-based research.

“I urge G20 member countries, businesses, academics, and scientists to collaborate and focus on evidence-based research and analytics to ensure preparedness in health systems and build adaptable global supply chains that can deliver instantaneously during a crisis,” Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa said in a statement issued by the USA-India Chamber of Commerce (USAIC) on Sunday.

The USAIC also announced to hold its 17th annual BioPharma and Healthcare Summit on May 3 virtually.

    MS Education Academy

Kant said G20 member countries share equal responsibility for ensuring robust and resilient health systems to provide health security to citizens.

The Research and Innovation Initiative Gathering (RIIG), Science20, Startup20 under G20 aim to achieve socio-economic equity through research, innovation, partnership and collaboration, he said.

“Global collaboration and partnership in drug and vaccine development, clinical research, streamlining workflows, inventory management will mitigate risks and allow seamless delivery of health care services,” said Kant, who would be addressing the conference along with other Indian government officials and industry leaders, including Dr. Vinod Paul, Member, NITI Aayog, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Dr. Naresh Trehan, Dr. Shiv Sarin, and Dr. Krishna Ella.

US FDA commissioner Dr. Robert Califf is participating in the summit.

Other important participants include Johnson & Johnson’s Chairman and CEO Joaquin Duato; Pfizer’s Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla; Biogen’s CEO Christopher Viehbacher, Merck’s former Chairman and CEO Kenneth Frazier along with top venture capitalists, academic leaders from Harvard, MIT, MD Anderson and Global Research and Development heads of Takeda, Sanofi, Amgen, Novartis, Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, demonstrating the interest of global BioPharma companies to collaborate with India.

Andrew Plump, president of R&D, Takeda, and Chair, of USAIC BioPharma and Healthcare Summit said the increasing pace of scientific innovation over the last few decades has resulted in extraordinary advances in healthcare and it is imperative that they ensure people across the globe have access to them.

“This year, with India on track to become the world’s most populous country, our responsibility to ensure its people benefit from these innovations that improve human health has never been greater,” he said.

“I see India on the path to becoming an innovation powerhouse in BioPharma in the coming years. India has tremendous needs and potential in the area of BioPharma and Healthcare Innovation. After 17 years of consistent efforts by the USAIC, we are very encouraged to see good progress and positive signs of India embracing BioPharma innovation,” said Karun Rishi, president of USAIC.

“India has enacted several pragmatic policies to drive innovation and bring much-needed investment into the country to make it an R&D leader. Measures undertaken by the Indian government in the last few years have prepared the ground for R&D in India. Now we should work towards scaling it up, be it in R&D, translational research, industry-academic partnerships, clinical trial or manufacturing,” he said.

BioPharma companies are digitising their operations with cloud-based technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other digital solutions, he said, adding that this is changing how we discover, develop and deliver health innovation.

This offers tremendous opportunity for India. India has the talent, infrastructure, and capacity to play a critical role in the digital and data science area, Rishi added. “With India assuming G20 Presidency this year, it is time to elevate the level of discussion about BioPharma R&D, Clinical Trials and Global Supply Chain. The summit will have a special session to discuss this by bringing together G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant and industry leaders. G20 is a very powerful group. It is important for India and the rest of the world that there is an honest discussion on access and availability as a key priority for equitable access to BioPharma innovation,” Rishi said.

“How can the industry and the G20 leadership work together to make this happen? Today’s healthcare challenges are complex. A united global response will be more effective than individual countries acting independently. India’s leadership at G20 this year can be a defining moment to address these critical issues for patients worldwide,” he said.

According to Hari Bhartia, Founder and co-Chairman, Jubilant Bhartia Group, India has an excellent opportunity to leverage its strong tradition in pharmaceuticals to expand into biologics and biosimilars.

“It provides a favourable ecosystem for developing biotechnology and healthcare businesses, with a wide variety of qualified talent pools, world-class infrastructure and business-friendly policies. The country has invested heavily in infrastructure, such as state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities with global accreditations and advanced laboratories with cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence and machine learning to support drug discovery and development research,” he said.

“India’s strategic move towards BioPharma innovation is a positive development for patients worldwide. With global partnerships, it will play a critical role in developing quality therapy products at an affordable price,” Bhatia added.

Rishi said to foster innovation and help the industry, USAIC is offering free registration for the annual summit. This has attracted over a thousand medical students and researchers globally to participate in the annual summit.

“I am encouraged by the response of young colleagues. They are the future leaders in the healthcare and life science industry. We must do everything to help the next generation of leaders,” he said.

SL President urged experts to promote AI taking India, Singapore as models

    [ad_1]

Colombo: Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Sunday urged IT experts in the island nation to promote Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, taking India and Sri Lanka as models.

He directed formation of a presidential task force comprising AI experts and prepare a concept paper to promote AI usage as done in the two Asian nations.

“When it comes to artificial intelligence, we should consider Singapore and India as role models. It is true that east Asia…. South Korea, Japan, and China are making progress in artificial intelligence, but no country in West Asia has reached that stage yet,” Wickremesinghe said.

    MS Education Academy

The Sri Lankan President said the country is aiming to create a digital economy and to meet the demands of the digital age, aiming to produce 10,000 engineers annually instead of present number 2, 500. He also highlighted the potential of AI in various fields, including agriculture, education, health, fisheries, and industry.

“We have identified the modernisation of agriculture and fisheries, tourism, and improvement of supply centres as urgent areas for development in our economic reforms. Additionally, we have placed a greater focus on the technology industry.”

The President noted that the current annual contribution to Sri Lanka’s gross national income through computer and information technology is around $1.9 billion, with no known amount from AI technology. He instructed officials to develop a system to track AI contributions and stressed the importance of taking prompt action to increase AI’s contribution to the gross domestic product in the coming years.

He invited the private sector to join in the effort and said that the government plans to allocate Rs one billion for AI technology next year.

  • India emerging as key aviation market: IATA report

India emerging as key aviation market: IATA report

    [ad_1]

Singapore: India is fast emerging as a key global aviation market, according to the latest market analysis report of the International Air Transport Association ( ATA).

India’s domestic air travel has continued to grow robustly and as of February, it was a mere 2.2 per cent shy of reaching pre-pandemic levels measured by passenger revenue kilometres (PRK).

The India domestic passenger market also led the rest of the domestic markets in the passenger load factor (PLF) metric in the report which includes the US, China and Japanese domestic markets. It has been the top domestic market measured by PLF for the last four months achieving PLFs of 81.6 per cent in February, 85.2 per cent in January, 88.9 per cent in December 2022, and 87.9 per cent in November 2022.

    MS Education Academy

Globally, traffic is now at 84.9 per cent of February 2019 levels. Total traffic in February 2023, based on RPKs, rose 55.5 per cent compared to February 2022.

The report added, “Asia-Pacific airlines had a 378.7 per cent increase in February 2023 traffic compared to February 2022, maintaining the very positive momentum of the past few months since the lifting of travel restrictions in the region. Capacity rose 176.4 per cent and the load factor increased 34.9 percentage points to 82.5 per cent, the second highest among the regions.”

Domestic air passenger traffic for all markets measured for February rose 25.2 per cent compared to one year ago. Total February 2023 domestic traffic was at 97.2 per cent of the February 2019 level.

At the moment, it is estimated that only about 35 to 40 million Indians travel by air every year. Although World Bank data shows that pre-COVID India had about 168 million air transport passengers, many are repeat flyers. This is much lower than China, which has a similar population and has 660 million air transport passengers during the same period in 2019. Chinese airlines also have about five times as many planes.

With a rapidly growing middle class and rising incomes, together with the right encouragement including lower airfares, many, including airline companies, are expecting India to become the fastest-growing aviation market for years to come.

Swiss airline intelligence provider, ch-aviation reported in March this year that French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said that IndiGo Airlines could announce an order for “several hundred” Airbus aircraft at the Paris Air Show to be held at Paris Le Bourget Airport in June.

IndiGo, the largest airline in India has over 300 aircraft and currently provides over 35 per cent of all the available seat kilometres on flights in and out of India’s airports. Measured by flight frequencies, IndiGo provides almost 48 per cent of all flights across India’s international and domestic markets.

Just in February, competitor Air India announced a world record order of 470 aircraft – 250 planes from European manufacturer Airbus and 220 from its US rival Boeing. The deal beats a 2017 order by IndiGo for 420 planes, and an order by American Airlines for 460 planes in 2011.

Besides aircraft manufacturers, foreign Airlines are also eyeing the Indian aviation market.

Singapore Airlines is one of them. Following the takeover of Air India by Tata Sons, it announced a USD267 million investment into the revamped airline giving it a 25.1 per cent stake in the new Air India group. This adds to the money it has already put into Vistara Airlines which is to be merged with Air India.

SIA released a statement during the announcement which said, “The merged entity will be four to five times larger in scale compared to Vistara, with a strong presence in all key airline segments in India. The proposed merger will bolster SIA’s presence in India, strengthen its multi-hub strategy, and allow it to continue participating directly in this large and fast-growing aviation market.”

Etihad Airways under new CEO Antonoaldo Neves is another airline that is planning to expand its presence in the India aviation market.

In an interview with Reuters published on April 27, the former CEO of TAP Air Portugal said that: “Etihad has India as a priority.” He added that the country is among its top three markets but declined to name the other two.

Etihad, which flies to places like Delhi and Mumbai, has identified six other Indian cities it does not serve but wants to launch flights to, he said.

He also announced plans for Etihad to double its fleet to 150 planes and triple its passenger number to 30 million annually by the end of the decade.

The expansion plans of the Middle Eastern airline will focus on medium and long-haul destinations, and the airline will avoid operating ultra-long-haul flights, where it can be tough to make money. Neves explained that the goal will be connecting places like China, Southeast Asia, India, and Gulf countries, with Europe and the East Coast of the United States.

Neves said that he expects Etihad’s growth to be organic relying on more code sharing and interline agreements. It will not look at mergers or equity partnerships as it had done in the past. It once had a stake in the now-defunct Jet Airways.

Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund ADQ took full control of Etihad last October and appointed Neves who had previously led a turnaround at Portugal’s TAP.

Whereas in the past, Etihad was seemingly willing to grow at any cost, this is set to change. Neves emphasises that growth will only be possible with profitability, especially as the airline is now owned by ADQ. As he explained, “Our mandate is very clear, we don’t fly to places where we don’t make money.”
