Over 135 Million Indians Break Free from Multidimensional Poverty in Five Years, States NITI Aayog Report

A Remarkable Shift: National Multidimensional Poverty Index Reveals Progress

India has achieved a significant milestone in its fight against poverty, as highlighted by the recently released National Multidimensional Poverty Index by NITI Aayog. The report reveals that more than 135 million Indians have successfully emerged from multidimensional poverty over the course of five years, demonstrating a noteworthy shift in the country’s socioeconomic landscape.

Steady Decline: Proportion of Poor Drops from 24.8% to 14.9%

    NITI Aayog Report

The comprehensive index shows a remarkable reduction in the proportion of the population living in poverty. Between 2015-16 and 2019-21, the percentage of the poor decreased from 24.8% to 14.9%, reflecting the collective efforts made to uplift millions of individuals from multidimensional deprivation.

Uttar Pradesh Leads: Highest Number of Individuals Escaping Poverty

Among the states that witnessed significant progress, Uttar Pradesh emerges at the forefront. With an impressive decline, the state saw 34.3 million people breaking free from poverty. Bihar and Madhya Pradesh closely follow, indicating the widespread impact of poverty reduction initiatives across different regions of the country.

Analyzing the Dimensions: Health, Education, and Standard of Living

The National Multidimensional Poverty Index evaluates progress across three equally weighted dimensions: health, education, and standard of living. It takes into account various indicators aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, such as nutrition, child and adolescent mortality, maternal health, years of schooling, access to clean cooking fuel, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, housing, assets, and financial inclusion.

Rural vs. Urban: Poverty Reduction Trends in Different Areas

The analysis also reveals distinct trends in poverty reduction between rural and urban areas. The rural regions experienced a faster decline, with poverty rates decreasing from 32.5% to 19.2%. In contrast, urban areas witnessed a reduction from 8.65% to 5.27%. These findings underscore the need for tailored approaches to address the unique challenges faced by both settings.

Significance for Sustainable Development: Achieving SDG Target 1.2 Ahead of Schedule

The substantial progress made in reducing multidimensional poverty positions India ahead of schedule in achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 1.2. The MPI value has nearly halved from 0.117 to 0.066 between 2015-16 and 2019-21, accompanied by a reduction in the intensity of poverty from 47% to 44%. These positive outcomes indicate a positive trajectory towards eradicating poverty and improving the well-being of the population.

Contributing Factors: Flagship Programs Making a Difference

NITI Aayog attributes this remarkable progress to the implementation of flagship programs. Initiatives like the Poshan Abhiyan, which focuses on nutrition, and Anaemia Mukt Bharat, aimed at addressing anemia, have played a crucial role in reducing health-related deprivations. Additionally, the Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission have significantly improved access to sanitation and clean drinking water nationwide.

Interlinked Initiatives: Collaborative Efforts Yield Positive Outcomes

The reduction in multidimensional poverty reflects the success of interlinked initiatives such as Saubhagya, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, and Samagra Shiksha. These programs, addressing aspects like access to electricity, housing, financial inclusion, and quality education, have collectively contributed to the positive shift in India’s poverty landscape.

As India continues its fight against poverty, the significant progress made in recent years serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts of government programs, NGOs, and the resilience of the Indian people. While challenges remain, the country is moving closer to realizing a more inclusive and prosperous future for all its citizens.

Discrepancies and Doubts Surrounding India's Poverty Statistics: A Deeper Look

An article titled ‘Over 135 Million Indians Break Free from Multidimensional Poverty in Five Years, States NITI Aayog Report ‘ has been published in the portal thenewscaravan.com

    https://thenewscaravan.com/over-135-million-indians-break-free-from-multidimensional-poverty-in-five-years-states-niti-aayog-report/

There are two problems accepting this assertion (1) The source is Niti Aaayog, a Govt of India body, which would naturally like to paint a rosy picture of the country (2) Statistics in India are highly questionable, as it is very difficult to verify them.
There is an aphorism of Mark Twain ” iies, damned lies, and statistics ”.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2017/02/02/lies-damned-lies-and-statistics-how-bad-statistics-are-feeding-fake-news/

This aphorism squarely applies to India, as it is a pretty disorganised country. Moreover it is so vast,, with 1400 million people, that it is difficult to get accurate figures, often even by a neutral unbiased body, what to say of a Government of India agency. How many people are poor, how many unemployed, how many lack proper healthcare and good education, etc are impossible to verify accurately, or even to conjecture.

And what is the definition of poverty ? Since prices of essential commodities have steeply escalated in India in recent years, and incomes have not correspondingly increased ( assuming they have increased at all ), it is obvious that poverty has increased ( since incomes are relative to the price index ).

Global Hunger Index, which is a reputed international agency reporting on world hunger, reported that half of Indian children are malnourished, wasted and/or stunted. India (which has a population of 1400 million ) has slipped from position number 101 to 107 in just one year ( 2021-2022 ) among the 121 countries surveyed by that international agency

Tens of millions of our young men and women are without jobs? If 100 class 4 ( peon or unskilled manual labour ) govt jobs are advertised, there are often several hundred thousand applicants, many of them having M.Sc M.A., or M.B.A. degrees ( some even Ph.D. ), engineers, etc.

Proper healthcare and good education is almost non-existent for the masses. Private hospitals and clinics are too expensive for the masses, and the condition of the govt ones is terrible (to say the least ). Even the All India Instititute of Medical Sciences ), New Delhi ( AIIMS ), a premier Indian medical institute, looks like a railway station, with thousands of sick people waiting outside endlessly, and usually with perfunctory care, if any. The condition of most schools in India is terrible.

It is sometimes claimed that GDP in India is growing, but no one asks who is getting the fruits of that growth, the Indian masses, or just a handful of big businessmen and international corporates ? The gap between rich and poor has widened in India, with a handful of big businessmen becoming richer ( often by illegal means ) while the poor get poorer ( because of escalating prices of food, etc ).

The study said that the UAE is the most connected country in the world, with a connected score of 7.53/10.

UAE residents also have social media accounts on several platforms, notably Facebook and TikTok.

The study found that the internet in the UAE is expensive, but 100 percent of the population use the internet, and 108 percent use Facebook.

The study revealed that UAE users spend an average of seven hours and 29 minutes on the Internet per day.

The UAE is followed by Malaysia/the Philippines with both countries scoring 8.75.

According to the ProxyRac report, India stood on the 19th spot with only 29 percent of the population using Facebook but spending nearly nine hours on the internet every day.

  • India tops list of countries with high maternal, newborn deaths: UN Study

India tops list of countries with high maternal, newborn deaths: UN Study

    [ad_1]

Cape Town: Owing to its large birth cohort, India leads a list of 10 countries that together account for 60 percent of global maternal deaths, stillbirths and newborn deaths, and 51 percent of live births globally, according to a United Nations report released on Tuesday.

The latest published estimate in the progress tracking report by the WHO, UNICEF, and the UNFPA was launched at the ongoing ‘International Maternal Newborn Health Conference’ (IMNHC 2023) here. It shows there were a combined 4.5 million deaths — maternal deaths (0.29 million), stillbirths (1.9 million) and newborn deaths (2.3 million) — in 2020-2021.

Sub-Saharan Africa and central and Southern Asia are the regions experiencing the largest number of deaths, although across all regions, there is variation regarding the pace at which countries are progressing in their efforts to achieve the global 2030 targets.

    MS Education Academy

According to the first-ever joint Every Newborn action Plan (ENAP) and Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM) progress tracking report, the global progress in reducing deaths of pregnant women, mothers and babies has flatlined for eight years due to decreasing investments in maternal and newborn health.

“Pregnant women and newborns continue to die at unacceptably high rates worldwide, and the coronavirus pandemic has created further setbacks to providing them with the health care they need,” Dr Anshu Banerjee, Director of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing at the World Health Organisation (WHO), said.

“If we wish to see different results, we must do things differently. More and smarter investments in primary health care are needed so that every woman and baby – no matter where they live – has the best chance of health and survival,” Banerjee said.

Addressing media at IMNHC, Dr Allisyn Moran, Maternal Health Lead at WHO, said the maternal, newborn mortality and stillbirths have declined since 2000, but since 2015, there has been significant plateauing of maternal mortality reduction and stillbirth reduction.

“We really need to work hard as a community to accelerate that progress so that we can achieve the SDG targets by 2030. In order to get there, we need to implement life saving interventions for quality antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care for women and newborns, and preventing stillbirths.

“We have coverage targets for antenatal, skilled birth assistant, and postnatal care to 2025. We know that the interventions need to be given along with quality and respectful care,” Moran said.

India saw 7,88,000 maternal deaths, stillbirths and neonatal deaths in 2020, of the total 4.5 million deaths globally. The country also accounts for 17 percent of global live births which could be a factor for the large number of maternal deaths, stillbirths and neonatal deaths.

It is followed by Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and China for maternal deaths, stillbirths and neonatal deaths.

Trend data revealed that the global progress in reducing maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths has slowed during the last decade. Gains made between 2000 and 2010 were faster than they have been in the years since 2010.

It is critical to determine the reasons for this slowed pace, and take action to address them.

“Global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, conflicts and other emergencies, as well as cost of living increases within countries have the potential to further slow progress in this decade, warranting greater urgency and investment towards maternal and newborn health targets,” the report said.

As is too often the case, vulnerability, fear, and loss are not spread equally around the world, Steven Lauwerier, UNICEF Director of Health, noted. “Since the COVID-19 pandemic, babies, children and women, who were already exposed to threats to their well-being, especially those living in fragile countries and emergencies, are facing the heaviest consequences of decreased spending and efforts on providing quality and accessible healthcare,” he said.

Funding shortfalls and underinvestment in primary health care can devastate survival prospects, the report highlighted.

In the worst-affected countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia the regions with the greatest burden of newborn and maternal deaths – fewer than 60 percent of women receive even four, of WHO’s recommended eight, antenatal checks, the report stated.

“This is a silent emergency that we have and we need to change the future. This report is telling us that we need to improve massively if we want to avert maternal deaths, newborn deaths and stillbirths, and not to forget morbidity in mothers and also newborns. We need to focus on quality of care and data as well. More data, better data and data from different levels so that we can gather more information,” Dr Willibald Zeck, Chief Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights at UNFPA, said.

To increase survival rates, women and babies must have quality and affordable healthcare before, during and after childbirth, the agencies said, as well as access to family planning services. More skilled and motivated health workers, especially midwives, are needed alongside essential medicines and supplies, safe water, and reliable electricity.

The report also stressed that interventions should especially target the poorest women and those in vulnerable situations who are most likely to miss out on lifesaving care, including through critical subnational planning and investments.

Improving maternal and newborn health further requires addressing harmful gender norms, biases and inequalities, it added.

India needs oppn that is not afraid of ruling party; Mamata should be PM: Swamy

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Subramanian Swamy said on Tuesday that the country needs a genuine opposition which is not afraid of the ruling party.

Describing West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee as someone who cannot be “blackmailed”, he said she should be the prime minister of India.

“I do think that the country needs a genuine opposition which cannot be blackmailed by people in power,” Swamy said while speaking at an interactive session organised by FLO, the women’s wing of FICCI, here.

    MS Education Academy

“I know a lot of people today. They will not go beyond a point against the present government. Because they are afraid that ED will turn up or something else will turn up. That’s not good for Indian democracy,” the BJP leader said.

He also reiterated that India needs an opposition which is “not a friend” of the ruling party.

“You can find many people like that. Some do it boisterously and some do it quietly,” he said.

“Mamata Banerjee should be the prime minister of India. She is a gutsy woman. Look at how she fought the communists. I met her 10 days ago but nobody knows (that),” Swamy said, adding that he knows her since she was fighting the CPI(M).

Asked about what transpired between Banerjee and him in that meeting, he said it was on how 2024 would be and what would be the shape of the economy then.

Referring to the TMC supremo, Swamy said it is “impossible to blackmail” her.

Asked about his opinion on the most powerful woman in the country today, the former MP said, “There was a time Jayalalitha could have been; there was a time when I thought of Mayawati. In the present situation…Mamata Banerjee. She is the only woman leader who has the guts to stand up. She is not complicit. “

Referring to Hinduism, he said it is the longest-surviving religion in the world today. “With that, you have a broadminded attitude.”

Asia Cup 2023: BIG Setback For Pakistan Cricket Board as THESE Countries Support India Over…. Details Here

The tussle between the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board continues on the question of hosting the Asia Cup 2023. Actually, the BCCI says that the Indian cricket team will not go to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup. At the same time, on the objection of BCCI, PCB suggested hybrid model, but BCCI did not agree.

BCCI got support from Sri Lanka Cricket Board and Bangladesh Cricket Board

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly received support from the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to move this year’s Asia Cup out of Pakistan. This is a big setback for Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) who was plotting to schedule the elite continental tournament in the nation.

Recently, Pakistan Cricket Board President Najam Sethi had suggested a hybrid model, but now the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and Bangladesh Cricket Board’s support to the BCCI is being considered as a major setback for the PCB. On the other hand, according to the reports of Pakistani channel Geo Sports, if the Asia Cup is not organized in Pakistan, then apart from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka is ready to organize the tournament.

MeT department forecast more precipitation in next 24 hours before “significant” improvement

    No ‘Hybrid Model’ for BCCI

According to other sources of Geo Sports, the Narendra Modi-led Indian government has instructed the BCCI to take a tough position at the subsequent ACC conference.

The hybrid concept put out by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which would have given India the option to play its matches at a neutral location, is also unlikely to be approved by the BCCI.

Najam Sethi, the chairman of the PCB Management Committee, had urged a logical strategy to resolve the situation, which threatens the country’s participation in this year’s ODI World Cup and the successful hosting of the Asia Cup.

Congress advocating about ‘separating’ Karnataka from India, claims PM in his rally

    [ad_1]

Nanjanagudu: In a blistering attack on the Congress during his last campaign rally ahead of May 10 Assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the party of openly advocating for “separating” Karnataka from India.

The Prime Minister’s charge comes a day after former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi addressed a campaign rally at Hubballi on Saturday.

Referring to her speech in a tweet, the party said Gandhi, who is the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson, “sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas”. It also posted pictures of Gandhi speaking at the public meeting.

    MS Education Academy

“The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity”, the tweet read.

Modi, apparently referring to this, alleged that the disease of the ‘tukde-tukde gang’ (anti-national elements) has reached the Congress’ top level.

“When it comes to working against India’s interests, Congress’ royal family will be at the forefront. I want to speak about a serious issue here, I want to say it as there is a lot of pain in my heart. This country can never forgive such a game. This family, to influence the politics in the country, is encouraging foreign forces to interfere,” Modi said.

Addressing the public meeting here in Mysuru district, he accused them of secretly meeting foreign diplomats who hate India, repeatedly indulging in activities that insult India’s sovereignty and said they are not ashamed of it.

Stating that in this Karnataka election, Congress’s ‘shahi parivar’ (royal family) has gone a step ahead “breaking all the limits and crushing the feelings of the country”, Modi said “not only Karnataka, I want to tell this to entire country with lot of pain that in this election Congress’ shahi parivar yesterday came to Karnataka and said that they want to protect the sovereignty of Karnataka.”

“Karnataka’s sovereignty, you know what is the meaning of it? They have sat in Parliament for so many years, they have taken oath on India’s Constitution, and they say this. When a country becomes independent, then that country is called a sovereign nation. The meaning of what Congress is saying is the party believes that Karnataka is separate from India,” he charged.

Asking people whether they approve it and whether they will punish Congress for such a statement, the Prime Minister said it means Congress is openly advocating about seperating Karnataka from India.

“I had never thought that the disease of the tukde-tukde gang would reach the Congress’ top level,” he said, accusing the party of insulting Kannada fighters who fought for India’s independence and insulting the patriotism of crores of Kannadigas.

Noting that this is the land where ‘Rashtra Kavi’ Kuvempu had said Karnataka is integral part of India with lines in the state anthem – “Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate Jaya he Karnataka Maate”, Modi said “for every Kannadiga, Karnataka is a mother and she has been described as the daughter of ‘Bharat ma’. I can feel the feelings of Kannadigas.”

Insulting the feelings of Karnataka is like insulting the “culture and pride” of the state, he added.

Further accusing Congress of creating rift between states and spreading communal fire, the Prime Minister said whenever they did such things, people of India united to defeat them.

Congress wants to somehow come to power in Karnataka to get “political oxygen”, he said, adding that “people here can never forgive them for this sin… Congress will get the response for this on May 10 with full strength.”

Stating that he was visiting the famous Srikanteshwara temple here, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva connected to the mythological context of ‘Vishapaan’ (Shiva drinking venom), after the rally, Modi said: “The way Congress abused me in Karnataka and poured venom on me, Lord Srikanteshwara gave me the strength to bear it.”

Thanking people for the blessings and affection towards him during campaigning in Karnataka, calling it his biggest asset, he said this is my last programme in this election campaign and after this he will leave for Delhi.

“I’m ending my campaign here, now you take the baton,” he said as he urged the people to vote on May 10 and exercise their franchise.
