Chief Minister Yogi further remarked, “If our religious places have been desecrated during any period, then a campaign for their restoration must be launched on the lines of Ayodhya where the construction of a grand temple of Lord Rama is going on after 500 years with the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. All of you devotees contributed to the construction of this grand national temple of Lord Rama, representing national sentiment. “

  • Three from India included in all-female panel of match officials for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023

Three from India included in all-female panel of match officials for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In a significant first for world cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday named an all-female panel of match officials, including three from India, for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, to be held from February 10-26 in South Africa.

Three match referees and 10 umpires make up the 13-woman team in what is a landmark moment for women in cricket. Three of those 13 officials will be Indians — match referee GS Lakshmi and two umpires, Vrinda Rathi and N Janani.

Lakshmi, one of three match referees in the upcoming tournament, passed a decade of refereeing in T20Is last year. Vrinda and Janani will be umpiring at a T20 World Cup for the first time ever.

“We are thrilled to announce this panel of match officials for the Women’s T20 World Cup. Women’s cricket has been growing rapidly in recent years and as part of that we have been building the pathways to ensure more women have the opportunity to officiate at the highest level.”

“This announcement is a reflection of our intent in this space and just the start of our journey where men and women enjoy the same opportunities across our sport. We are committed to continuing to support our female match officials and provide opportunities to showcase their talents on the global stage. I wish them all the best for the tournament,” said Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager – Cricket.

The panel for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup includes seven first-timers in the event and this announcement comes after a constant rise in the number of women officiating in global tournaments.

Eight women officials were involved in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 and the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, while nine women have been involved in the ongoing ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

“When young women and girls see it, they believe that they can be it. That’s just one of the reasons why having this match officials panel is so special. It shows the next generation that there is a career and a pathway that takes them to the very top of the game, the World Cup, even if you’re not a player. It shows that there are so many ways to get involved,” said Snehal Pradhan, ICC Manager – Women’s Cricket.

Claire Polosak is the most experienced of the umpires, selected as she continues her record of officiating in every Women’s World Cup, T20 and ODI, since 2016. The 34-year-old Australian will be officiating in her fourth T20 World Cup, while Sue Redfern of England, Jacqueline Williams of the West Indies, and Kim Cotton of New Zealand will be involved in their third Women’s T20 World Cups.

Lauren Agenbag will get the chance to umpire at a World Cup on home soil with the South African selected for her second T20 World Cup with match referee Shandre Fritz to oversee games in her home country at her debut T20 World Cup. Fritz had represented the Proteas on home soil as a player at the 2005 Women’s Cricket World Cup.

The South African duo were a part of the match officials’ team for the first game of the Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand last year as Fritz made her World Cup bow, while Agenbag continued her impressive rise having previously become the first woman from her country to umpire a T20I.

Meanwhile, Michell Pereira of Sri Lanka will take charge of her first-ever T20I at the 2023 World Cup which gets underway on February 10 as hosts South Africa take on Sri Lanka in Cape Town.

England’s Anna Harris is the youngest of the umpires at just 24 years old as she makes her debut at a major ICC event, while Eloise Sheridan of Australia and Nimali Perera of Sri Lanka will be umpiring in the T20 World Cup for the first time.

2,967 tigers in India across 53 tiger reserves: Centre tells SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Centre on Friday told the Supreme Court that there are 2,967 tigers in the country spread across 53 tiger reserves, according to a 2018 report.

The apex court was hearing a petition filed by Advocate Anupam Tripathi in 2017 seeking to save endangered tigers whose numbers are dwindling across the country.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told a bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna that a lot of work has been done for the conservation of tigers and increasing their population.

The top court took note of the submission and adjourned the matter till March as Tripathi was not present.

“Heard ASG Aishwarya Bhati. As per the 2018 census, India has 2,967 tigers spread out in 53 tiger reserves. This number constitutes 70 per cent of the global number and figures point to the growth of the tigers. In the interest of justice, to give an opportunity to the petitioner, list on March 3,” the bench said.

The top court in 2017 had issued notice to the Ministry of Environment, the National Board for Wildlife and the National Tiger Conservation Authority on the plea which had also sought relocation of people living near tiger reserves.

The petition had said tigers were being killed either by poisoning by locals or the authorities, shooting by forest guards or by poaching.

  • Why Pak is demanding reversal of abrogation of Art 370 for resuming dialogue with India

Why Pak is demanding reversal of abrogation of Art 370 for resuming dialogue with India

    [ad_1]

Ever since Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made an offer to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to hold “serious and sincere” talks to resolve burning issues, including Kashmir, on January 16, there has been a lot of buzz as to how the two countries should resume their long- suspended dialogue to ease the relations. Within a day after Sharif made this offer, during the course of an interview with the UAE based TV network, “Al-Arabiya”, Pakistan PM’s office stated that there cannot be any dialogue with India unless or until Delhi reverses all the decisions on August 5, 2019.

The August 5, 2019 decisions made by New Delhi can be decoded quite easily. The Special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, granted and guaranteed by Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, was scrapped. All the symbols of special status – separate constitution, separate flag and all-powerful state legislature which had the powers to frame its own laws, facilitate or stall the federal laws,- were done away with. Alongside, the special privileges of the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir to have sole right to their land and jobs were also withdrawn. That, in simple words, translated this complicated situation, that the people of Jammu and Kashmir, on this side of the Line of Control were Indianized” in all senses of the words. They were as privileged or ordinary citizens as the people in the rest of the country.

Why Pakistan is insisting on the reversal of the  August 5, 2019 decisions and making it as a condition for resumption of the dialogue with India. The nation that had been calling for the implementation of the UN resolutions on Kashmir, that is, to grant right to self-determination to the people of  Jammu and Kashmir, scaled down its demand to the restoration of the special status and the statehood. There is a method in this. Pakistan was never in favour of Article 370 which determined the constitutional relation between J&K and Delhi until August 5, 2019. Sudden love for  Article 370 of the Indian constitution, are based on its own logics. It fears that Kashmir would lose its Muslim-majority character as the new laws have opened floodgates for Indians from other parts of the country to buy land and set up their businesses.  Pakistan has always counted, the Muslim-majority character of Jammu and Kashmir, as an asset. It had made the similar argument in 1947 while claiming that the state should be part of Pakistan.  The Muslim-majority character of J&K also gives it a  religion-driven argument to highlight Kashmir issue.

Islamabad, no doubt, has sensed that the Indianization of the Kashmiri Muslims in fullest terms, would leave it with no stakes on Kashmir and it may find edged out of the whole discourse and discussions on Kashmir. It wants to inflict on the growing sense of the Indianness in J&K  The optics have started changing already. It is difficult to discern that all this is voluntary or manifestation of some kind of inner feelings, but the fact remains that greatest symbol of Indian nationalism- the national tricolor, is becoming visible almost everywhere in the Valley. There is no challenge to it. These optics have become more pronounced and profound when contrasted with the past, and also that how the world has come to see Kashmir in the post-Article 370 abrogation. All the fears that Kashmir will be a land red with blood once its special status is revoked have come untrue. People exercised their wisdom, avoided clashes  and saved themselves from death and destruction.

Pakistan is angry over it, and that’s why it is making all sorts of excuses in  suppressing prospects of dialogue with India

Russian President Vladimir Putin greets India on Republic Day

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India is making a “substantial” contribution towards global stability and security, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday while extending his greetings to the country on the occasion of its 74th Republic Day.

In a message to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Putin also highlighted India’s achievements in the economic, social, scientific, technological and other spheres, according to the Russian embassy here.

French President Emmanuel Macron too greeted Modi and said he looks forward to setting new ambitions for the India-France strategic partnership.

“As India celebrates Republic Day, I convey my warmest wishes to my dear friend @NarendraModi and the Indian people. I look forward to setting new ambitions together for the G20 and for our Indo-French strategic partnership as it turns 25 this year,” Macron wrote on Twitter.

Putin, in his message, said: “India’s achievements in the economic, social, scientific, technological and other spheres are widely known.”

“Your country is making a substantial contribution to ensuring international stability and security and to addressing vital issues on the regional and global agenda,” he said.

Putin’s comments came amid escalating tensions between Russia and the western powers over the Ukraine conflict.

India has been pushing for the resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Putin said Moscow puts a “high value” on its privileged strategic partnership with New Delhi.

“I am confident that by working together we can ensure the continued growth of mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation in all areas,” he added.

“This undoubtedly meets the fundamental interests of the friendly peoples of Russia and India,” the Russian president said.

  • India a bright spot in world economy right now: top UN economist

India a bright spot in world economy right now: top UN economist

    [ad_1]

United Nations: India is a “bright spot” in the world economy currently and is on a “strong footing”, projected to grow at 6.7 per cent next year, a very high growth rate relative to other G20 member countries, a top UN economist said.

These remarks were made by the Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division, UN-Department of Economic and Social Affairs Hamid Rashid.

“I think India is a bright spot in the world economy right now,” Rashid said at a press conference here Wednesday at the launch of the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2023 report.

The flagship report said that India’s GDP is projected to moderate to 5.8 per cent in 2023 as higher interest rates and global economic slowdown weigh on investment and exports.

India’s economic growth is expected to remain “strong” even as prospects for other South Asian nations “are more challenging.” India is projected to grow at 6.7 per cent in 2024, the fastest-growing major economy in the world.

Rashid said, “we believe the Indian economy is on a strong footing given the strong domestic demand in the near term.” Noting that India’s economic growth is expected to pick up in 2024 to 6.7 per cent, he said this is “very high growth relative to other G20 member countries.

The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom and United States) and the European Union “This is a sustainable growth rate for India. India also has a significant number of people living in poverty. So this would be a great boost. If India can sustain this growth rate in the near term, that would be good for the Sustainable Development Goals, good for poverty reduction globally,” Rashid said.

Responding to a question on the Indian economy, Rashid, who is the lead author of the report, attributed three factors to India’s current economic strength.

He said India’s unemployment rate has come down significantly in the last four years to 6.4 per cent and is lower than what it was around 2017. “That means the domestic demand has been pretty strong,” he said.

India’s inflation pressure also has “eased quite significantly” and it is expected to be about 5.5 per cent this year and 5 per cent in 2024.

Rashid said this means that the country’s central bank would not have to aggressively go for monetary tightening.

The third factor benefitting India is that its import bills have been lower, “especially energy import cost has been lower than in the previous years. That has also helped India’s growth prospect in 2022 and 2023,” he said.

Outlining “downside risks” for India’s growth prospects in the near term, Rashid said higher interest rates have a spillover effect.

“India’s debt servicing cost has exceeded 20 per cent of the budget and that is a significantly high debt servicing cost and that would probably have some drag on the growth prospects.” He said another risk for the Indian economy is external demand.

“If Europe goes into a very slow growth mode” and the US is also in a similar situation, India’s export to the world economy may suffer a setback.

The report noted that world output growth is projected to decelerate from an estimated three per cent in 2022 to 1.9 per cent in 2023, marking one of the lowest growth rates in recent decades as a “series of severe and mutually reinforcing shocks — the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and resulting food and energy crises, surging inflation, debt tightening, as well as the climate emergency — battered the world economy in 2022.” It presents a gloomy and uncertain global economic outlook for the near term. Global growth is forecast to moderately pick up to 2.7 per cent in 2024 as some of the headwinds will begin to subside. However, this is highly dependent on the pace and sequence of further monetary tightening, the course and consequences of the war in Ukraine, and the possibility of further supply-chain disruptions.

The report, produced by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), said that in South Asia, the economic outlook has significantly deteriorated due to high food and energy prices, monetary tightening and fiscal vulnerabilities. Average GDP growth is projected to moderate from 5.6 per cent in 2022 to 4.8 per cent in 2023.

“Prospects are more challenging” for other economies in the South Asia region. Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka sought financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund in 2022.

China is projected to grow at 4.8 per cent in the calendar year 2023 and 4.5 per cent in 2024, while the US is estimated to register a 0.4 per cent economic growth this year and 1.7 per cent in 2024.

The report said that amid high inflation, aggressive monetary tightening and heightened uncertainties, the current downturn has slowed the pace of economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, threatening several countries — both developed and developing — with the prospects of a recession in 2023. Growth momentum significantly weakened in the United States, the European Union and other developed economies in 2022, adversely impacting the rest of the global economy through a number of channels.

In India, annual inflation is estimated at 7.1 per cent in 2022, exceeding the 2 to 6 per cent medium-term inflation target band set by the Central Bank. India’s inflation is expected to decelerate to 5.5 per cent in 2023 as global commodity prices moderate and slower currency depreciation eases imported inflation.

Most developing countries have seen a slower job recovery in 2022 and continue to face considerable employment slack. Disproportionate losses in women’s employment during the initial phase of the pandemic have not been fully reversed, with improvements mainly arising from a recovery in informal jobs, the report said.

Recovery in the labour market has been uneven across the region. The report said that among the large economies, the unemployment rate dropped to a four-year low of 6.4 per cent in India, as the economy added jobs both in urban and rural areas in 2022. “In India, the unemployment rate in 2022 declined to pre-pandemic levels through stepped-up urban and rural employment. But youth employment remained below pre-pandemic levels, particularly among young women, given the pandemic’s severe impacts on economic sectors where women tend to cluster,” it said.

The report calls for governments to avoid fiscal austerity which would stifle growth and disproportionately affect the most vulnerable groups, affect progress in gender equality and stymie development prospects across generations.

It recommends reallocation and reprioritisation of public expenditures through direct policy interventions that will create jobs and reinvigorate growth. This will require strengthening of social protection systems, ensuring continued support through targeted and temporary subsidies, cash transfers, and discounts on utility bills, which can be complemented with reductions in consumption taxes or customs duties, it said.

  • BBC documentary on PM is conspiracy against India: Goa Governor

BBC documentary on PM is conspiracy against India: Goa Governor

    [ad_1]

Panaji: A BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots that has sparked controversy is a “conspiracy” against India, said Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Thursday.

The “character assassination of the prime minister” amounts to an onslaught, insult and a malicious act against the country, said the governor during his address after inspecting a Republic Day parade near Panaji.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has criticised the documentary titled “India: The Modi Question” as a “propaganda piece” that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.

Governor Pillai said that the present controversy was “ill-motivated”, adding in the same breath that he was “not criticising Britain which is one of the friendly countries of India now”.

Unlike a common citizen who can approach the court in case of character assassination, the PM, President, Vice President and ministers have to be represented by public prosecutors in such cases, he said. “This means character assassination of the Prime Minister amounts to an onslaught, an insult, a malicious act against the country. That is why I would like to say BBC’s present act is not good,” he said.

The governor said that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is not an independent organisation. “It is answerable to British Parliament. I am not blaming the British government but there’s some conspiracy against India,” he said.

Pillai said that he does not want to go much into the present circumstances but after PM Modi “became the head of the G20 group”, he has given a call for “one world, one family, one future”.

India has taken over the presidency – which rotates annually between members – of the Group of Twenty countries.

Talking to reporters later, the governor said that under the system of law followed by “us and the conventions”, an attack or character assassination of the PM would amount to an attack on the sovereignty of the country.

In this case, the governor, the “attack” on the PM is also a challenge to the Indian Judiciary. “Indian Judiciary is the finest in the world. They had monitored this case (Gujarat riots) and there is nothing to connect the PM to it, not even a whisper is against him,” he said.

Air India offers nearly 98 crore shares to employees under stock option scheme

    [ad_1]

Mumbai/New Delhi: Air India has offered around 98 crore shares of the company to its permanent employees as part of a stock option scheme.

The shares are also being offered to the permanent staff of Air India Express as part of the Employees’ Share Benefit (ESB) Scheme 2022, according to a document.

The Tata group took over the control of Air India and Air India Express from the government on January 27, 2022.

An airline official told PTI that around 8,000 employees will benefit from the scheme.

“In accordance with the share purchase agreement signed as part of the disinvestment process, Air India has initiated the Employee Share Benefit Scheme for eligible employees who were in service with the airline on the date of privatisation.

“We will be working with the relevant employees to help them understand the long term benefits and avail of the same,” an Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

Those who were permanent employees at the two carriers — Air India and Air India Express — at the time of the takeover will be eligible to participate in the scheme where the share is offered at a price of 27 paise apiece, as per the document sent to the staff.

A source said the price is at a discount compared to the book value of 87-90 paise per share at the time of acquisition.

An employee trust has been set up to administer the ESB scheme.

“The company has authorised the trust to offer ESB benefits on no more than three per cent of the shares of the company purchased by Talace i.e., 97,99,56,600 to the eligible employees from time to time, in one or more tranches, acquired by the trust from Talace for nil monetary consideration.

“The trust shall hold the ESB shares to provide the ESB benefit to the eligible employees upon the payment of the aggregate exercise price together with all applicable taxes and amounts…,” the document said.

Talace, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, acquired Air India, Air India Express and the government’s 50 per cent stake in Air India SATS Airport Services Pvt Ltd.

“.. any eligible employee retiring on or after January 27, 2022, will be deemed to be an eligible employee and will be entitled to the benefits in accordance with and subject to the terms of this scheme,” as per the document.

A source at Air India Express said the airline has around 1,600 employees, majority of whom are contractual staff. It has about 300 pilots who are on permanent rolls, the source added.

Lotteries are regulated by governments to varying degrees, with some countries outlawing them and others endorsing them. In some countries, lotteries are legalized by the government as a means of raising revenue for public services or charities.

Lottery tickets can be purchased from authorized retailers or online through websites that offer international lottery services. Players must choose their numbers carefully and pay attention to the draw dates to have a chance at winning the jackpot. The odds of winning vary depending on the number of players participating in each draw and the size of the jackpot. It is important to remember that playing international lotteries involves taking risks and should only be done with the money that you can afford to lose.

Tips to Avoid Getting Scammed on Online Lotteries

Playing online lotteries can be a fun and exciting way to win some money, but it’s important to be aware of the risks associated with it. Scams are unfortunately common in the world of online lotteries, so it’s important to take steps to protect yourself from being taken advantage of. Here are three tips to help you avoid getting scammed on online lotteries:

    1. Play only on websites that have been fully vetted and have a proper license to operate online. This ensures that the site is legitimate and not fraudulent. Also, before you play the lottery online, research and read honest reviews from other players. This will give you an idea of what other people’s experiences with the site have been, which will help you make an informed decision about whether to play there.
    2. Avoid free lotteries in India that promise to give out money, and prefer promotions of free real tickets, discounts, and other offers. Free lotteries are often scams, and you should never give out your personal information or financial details to anyone offering them.
    3. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of any website before signing up for an account. This will help you understand the rules and regulations of the site, as well as any fees that may be associated with playing online lotteries.

Finally, if you are looking for a reliable and trustworthy online lottery service in India, Lottobaba is a perfect choice.
