Air India urination case: Delhi court reserves order on accused Shankar Mishra’s bail plea

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday reserved for January 31 its order on the bail application of Shankar Mishra, accused of urinating on a woman on board an Air India flight from New York to New Delhi.

Police have opposed the bail application, saying India has been defamed internationally because of the incident.

“It may be disgusting but that is another matter, let’s not get into that. Let’s go into how the law deals with it,” the judge said.

The judge also observed that the witnesses named by the prosecution “are not deposing in your (police) favor”.

Police have also alleged that the accused threatened the complainant.

Mishra had sought bail, saying initially, the bail had been declined by a magisterial court because the investigation was pending.

“Now that’s done and they have examined other crew members and witnesses. Also, they asked for reimbursement of the ticket and sought no action against me,” the counsel said.

No freedom for Islamic activities in any country like that in India: Muslim scholar

    [ad_1]

Kozhikode: An Islamic scholar in Kerala on Saturday said there is no other country in the world where Islamic activities can be done freely like that in India and such kind of operational freedom is absent even in the so-called Muslim countries.

Speaking at a programme in this northern district, he asked whether there was any other country which grants operational freedom for Muslim outfits like in our country.

The statement of Ponmala Abdul Khader Musliyar, who belongs to the Muslims scholars’ body “Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama” (Samastha), came at a time when discussions are raging about religious freedom of minority communities in the country.

“When you look at the world nations, (you can find that) there is no other country where Islamic activities are being done like that in India. In which countries are these organisational activities possible?” he said.

Even among the familiar Gulf nations like UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or in eastern countries like Singapore, Malaysia and so on, there is no other country suitable for our (Islamic) activities, he explained.

Musliyar said in India, the Islamic outfits can operate from the grassroot level to any extent and it is not possible even in countries like Qatar, UAE or Saudi Arabia.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur lighted the ceremonial lamp to inaugurate the 1st SCO Film Festival. Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, actress Hema Malini and other prominent personalities were present during the inaugural ceremony.

During the event, Anurag Thakur also spoke about the ban on Pakistani artists. He said that not only Pakistan but other nations were also invited to the film festival. He informed that Pakistan has refrained from participating in it. “Whenever a multinational tournament has happened we have included all those countries that are a part of the world. It’s their decision to attend or avoid it. We have sent the invitation to all the members of SCO,” he was quoted saying in the ETimes report.

“If I talk about the members it’s a long list. See we have sent the invitations from our side we have opened the gates for everyone,” he further added.

When asked about revoking the ban on Pakistani artists, the Minister said, “please, for now, let us keep it to the SCO festival only.”

It is clear that Pakistan was invited to participate in the festival only. The ban on artists has not been yet revoked. It is relevant to mention here that the latest Pakistani film ”The Legend of Maula Jatt’ starring Fawad Khan, Hamza Abbasi and Mahira Khan also remained in headlines last month as makers were planning to screen the film in India. The screening of the movie was later cancelled.

Various Pakistani artists like Fawad Khan, Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Mahira Khan and others have amassed a huge fan following in India. After the URI attack in 2016, Pakistani artists were banned from performing in India.

  • US, India to hold diplomatic consultations: State Dept

US, India to hold diplomatic consultations: State Dept

    [ad_1]

New York: The US diplomat in charge of political affairs is visiting India for consultations with the External Affairs Ministry in New Delhi, according to the State Department.

During her visit, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland will lead the US delegation to the annual foreign office consultations “which cover the full range of bilateral, regional, and global issues”, the Department said on Friday.

She is also scheduled to meet young tech leaders, it added.

Her visit to India will be a part of a week-long swing through Asia that starts on Saturday and take her also to Nepal, Sri Lanka and Qatar.

During her visit to Sri Lanka which will mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between that country and the US, she will convey Washington’s “support for Sri Lanka’s efforts to stabilize the economy, protect human rights, and promote reconciliation”, the Department said.

In Nepal, Nuland will engage with the new government of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal who took office last month on the broad agenda of the partnership between the two countries.

Qatar, which plays a pivotal role in international diplomacy relating to the Taliban regime, represents US interests in Afghanistan as Washington has not recognized the regime.

The Department said that there Nuland will discuss “our bilateral arrangement on the protection of US interests in Afghanistan”.

“Global issues under the framework of the US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue and that country’s critical support for the relocation of Afghans with ties to the US,” will also figure in her discussions with leaders there, it noted.

The foreign office consultations are an annual affair to review the entire range of cooperation between the two countries under the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, including political, economic, commercial, regional, and international cooperation.

The last such consultation was in March last year.

Although the US and India have been drawing closer together, New Delhi’s apparent neutrality in the Ukraine war and its continued purchase of oil from Russia remains a sticking point, although Washington’s diplomats gloss over it.
