Betting, casino firms find new advertising avenues despite ban in India

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Even as the Indian government has banned 138 betting apps, offshore betting and casino companies are finding new avenues to advertise their illegal wares to millions of unsuspecting Indians.

These platforms continue to extensively use sports teams, personalities and industry sponsorships in India.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) banned 138 betting/gambling websites and apps under section 69(A) of the IT Act, as they “were engaging in illegal money laundering & were posing threat to the financial security of our nation,”

In 2022, The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued two advisories against advertisements of betting on digital media platforms and TV Channels. It had also warned against offshore betting platforms using news as a surrogate product and promoting betting in the garb of news.

Football and Kabaddi are two sports that continue to see a lot of betting companies. Stake, an online casino, is the principal partner of the ISL teams Mumbai FC and Hyderabad FC. Parimatch is the main sponsor of the football team Goa FC. The betting site, Dafa is a sponsor of the Kabaddi team Telugu Titans, while Fairplay is a partner of Jaipur Pink Panther. Bollywood star Nargis Fakhri is the brand ambassador of Betway.

The India Affiliate Summit, organised by IAMAI, has among its partners and sponsors, some of the biggest betting and casino companies including Parimatch and Rajabet.

The India Affiliate Summit billed as the “largest performance marketing event in India” will be held in October 2023. Parimatch and Khelraja were among the esteemed speakers of the 2022 summit. IAMAI had recently stated that it is most suited to form the proposed self-regulatory organisation (SRO) for online gaming.

In an interview given to Mint, the CEO of now-banned betting company Parimatch said that offshore betting companies do deposits of $ 1 billion every month or around INR one lakh crores per year.

This makes the illegal betting and casino sector bigger than the legitimate online gaming industry. According to the State of India Gaming Report by Lumikai, the Indian gaming industry saw a revenue of just USD 2.6 billion in FY 2022.

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has recently released a draft of rules for online gaming companies and invited feedback from various stakeholders. IAMAI said that the rules “are right on intention, but poor on scoping.” Four of India’s biggest gaming companies had in a letter to MeITY said that IAMAI did not consult them before making the statement public.

Turkish envoy calls India ‘dost’, thanks for sending relief aid

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Turkey’s Ambassador to India Firat Sunel referred to New Delhi as ‘dost’ (Hindi for friend) after the Centre decided to send relief and humanitarian aid to the quake-hit nation where more than 4,300 people died in the aftermath of a devastating 7.8-magnitude quake that struck an area close to the Syrian border.

In a tweet late Monday night, Sunel said: “‘Dost’ is a common word in Turkish and Hindi… We have a Turkish proverb: ‘Dost kara gunde belli olur’ (a friend in need is a friend indeed). Thank you very much.”

On Tuesday, India dispatched the first batch of humanitarian aid along with a rescue team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to Turkey.

Taking to Twitter, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said: “India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) capabilites in action.

The 51-member NDRF team headed by Deputy Commandant Deepak Talwar left from the Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad for Turkey on board an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft.

On Monday, the Centre had announced that two NDRF teams comprising 100 personnel with specially trained dog squads and necessary equipment were ready to be flown to Turkey for search and rescue operations.

According to the government, medical teams were also being readied with trained doctors and paramedics with essential medicines.

As of Tuesday morning, the toll in Turkey stood at 2,921, while in Syria it increased to 1,451.

  • No scope for hate crimes on basis of religion in secular country such as India: SC

No scope for hate crimes on basis of religion in secular country such as India: SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday observed that there is a growing consensus around hate speech and stressed there is no scope for hate crimes on the basis of religion in a secular country such as India.

“There cannot be any compromise on hate speech at all,” the top court said and added that it is only if the State acknowledges the problem of hate speech that a solution can be found.

It also said that it is the primary duty of the State to protect its citizens from any such hate crimes.

A bench of justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna said, “When action is not taken against hate crimes then an atmosphere is fostered which is very dangerous and it has to be rooted out from our lives. There cannot be any compromise on hate speech at all.”

The top court was hearing a plea of a Muslim man who has alleged that he was assaulted and abused in the name of religion on July 4, 2021, by a “screwdriver gang” of criminals as he had boarded a car to go to Aligarh from Noida, and that the police has not bothered to register any complaint of hate crime.

The bench told Additional Solicitor General (ASG) KM Nataraj, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, that, “Nowadays there is a growing consensus around hate speech. There is no scope for hate crimes in the name of religion in a secular country like India. It has to be rooted out and it is the primary duty of the state to protect its citizens from any such crimes.”

“If a person comes to the police and says that I was wearing a cap and my beard was pulled and abused in the name of religion and still no complaint is registered, then it is a problem,” it said.

Justice Joseph said action of every state officer augments respect for the law. Otherwise, everyone will take the law into their own hands, he said.

The bench, which sat till 6 pm hearing the matter, said, “Will you not acknowledge that there is a hate crime and you will sweep it under the carpet? We are not saying anything adverse. We are only expressing our anguish. That is all.”

Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the petitioner Kazeem Ahmad Sherwani, said it was on January 13 that this court had asked the state government to produce the case diary that police had registered the FIR after two years and that too with all bailable offences barring one.

Nataraj conceded that there were lapses on part of police officials and said that a special investigation team has been constituted headed by an ACP-rank officer and disciplinary action has been taken against erring police officials.

The bench said, “You set an example and let such people face consequences for dereliction of duty. It is only when you take action against such incidents that we will come at par with developed nations. Yes, there has been clear lapse and there is nothing wrong in admitting a mistake”.

Nataraj said that on July 4, 2021, when the alleged incident had taken place, the victim had gone to a police outpost in Sector 37 in Noida where no senior police official but constables were present. Hence, no complaint was registered, he said.

“Then he went to the hospital in Jamia Nagar and gave a statement to the Delhi Police that he was robbed, assaulted and suffered injuries. No where he said that it was a case of hate crime or was assaulted because he was Muslim,” Nataraj said.

Justice Nagarathna said, “At any point of time the victim cannot be met with disparaging remarks. Victim should not make it look as if he is a perpetrator of crime”.

Justice Joseph said be in minority or majority, certain rights are inherent in human beings. “You are born into a family and raised in one. We have no choice on our religion, but we stand out as a nation. That’s the beauty, the greatness of our nation. We have to understand this,” he told Nataraj.

Justice Joseph referring to a recent incident in Rajasthan said a mute person was attacked but it was later found that the victim was Hindu. “If you ignore this (hate crime), then one day it will come for you,” he said, adding that there is no doubt that some people have a communal attitude.

The ASG said that eight FIRs have been registered against the gang members and action has been taken against them.

The bench then asked when the first FIR was registered against the gang members and how many people were arrested and were they the same people, who attacked the victim and when were they bailed out.

Nataraj said he will file an affidavit giving details of all the FIRs but pointed out that the first FIR was registered in June 2021 against the “screwdriver gang” members and they have not discriminated in attacking Muslims or Hindus.

Advocate Ahmadi said it took two years to acknowledge that there was a criminal incident and in two affidavits filed by the Uttar Pradesh government, police have said that there was no hate crime.

“On July 5, 2021, a police patrol had come to my house and asked not to press for hate crime angle”, he said, adding that the victim’s beard was pulled and stripped and made fun of for being circumcised in a car.

The bench said that it cannot issue a pan-India direction on the victim’s petition under Article 32, as it may not be a case symptomatic of what is happening across the country or otherwise it will flood the courts.

Nataraj said police has not denied that there was not a criminal incident but no where it was found that it was a hate crime and the victim has tried to take advantage of media hype and changed its statements.

The bench asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a detailed affidavit and posted the matter for further hearing on March 3.

On October 21 last year, the apex court had asked Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Delhi to crack down hard on those making hate speeches, observing, “where have we reached in the name of religion, what have we reduced religion to is tragic”.

Holding that the Constitution of India envisages a secular nation, the court had directed the three states to promptly register criminal cases against the offenders without waiting for a complaint to be filed.

  • New Zealand foreign minister Nanaia Mahuta leaves for India

New Zealand foreign minister Nanaia Mahuta leaves for India

    [ad_1]

Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta departs for India as she continues to reconnect Aotearoa New Zealand to the world.

The visit will begin in New Delhi where the Foreign Minister will meet with the Vice President Hon Jagdeep Dhankar and her Indian Government counterparts, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda. She will also travel to Mumbai to promote New Zealand’s education, trade, and tourism interests in India’s commercial and industrial capital.

“Reconnecting New Zealand remains a key priority as we look to strengthen our economic resilience and progress ties with our international partners,” Nanaia Mahuta said.

“Aotearoa New Zealand and India have an energetic and vibrant relationship. We share strong people-to-people links with more than 240,000 people of Indian descent calling New Zealand home.

“We also share ambitious goals between our countries and I will be reinforcing our commitment to supporting closer private sector collaboration and improved air services. The visit will also provide an opportunity to progress indigenous engagement, following initial discussions by Minister Whaitiri during her visit last year.

“With a focus on economic recovery and resilience, I will meet with the Chair of the India New Zealand Business Council and host a roundtable with NZTE representatives. These discussions will allow me to underline our strategy for lifting our bilateral commercial and economic ties.

“New Zealand sees India as a core and influential partner in the Indo-Pacific and we have welcomed their participation in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework. This framework offers a key vehicle for engaging with India as part of a broader regional agenda.

“Both of our countries value each other’s perspectives on the Pacific region and we will discuss opportunities to work together in climate change and our views on regional security.

“When Minister Jaishankar visited Aotearoa New Zealand last year, we both agreed that the relationship was ready for its next phase. I look forward to building on this momentum and sharing our progress to join the International Solar Alliance, which India and France established in 2015 to promote solar energy cooperation and climate action globally,” Nanaia Mahuta said.

Nanaia Mahuta returns to New Zealand on Sunday 12 February.

PM Modi to inaugurate India Energy Week in Bangalore

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit poll-bound Karnataka for the third time in a period of 36 days on Monday. PM Modi on his one-day visit will inaugurate the India Energy Week organised in Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) at Bengaluru.

On his first visit in February, he will also inaugurate HAL Helicopter Factory in Gubbi Taluk of Tumakuru. This manufacturing facility spread across 615 acres of land is dubbed as India’s largest manufacturing facility of Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) and Indian Multirole Helicopters (IMRH). He will also address a gathering after the incident. PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for the unit in 2016.

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Tumakuru Industrial Township, an Industrial Node on Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor. The project is slated to generate employment for over 90,000 people. It is spread over 1,722 acres and is being implemented at a cost of Rs 1,701 crore.

Further, PM Modi will later inaugurate Multi-Village Water Supply Schemes under Jal Jeevan Mission in Tiptur taluk and Chikkanayakanahalli taluk in Tumakuru, which will provide treated water for 1.86 lakh people from the Hemavathi River at a cost of Rs 435 crore and Rs 115 crore respectively.

Karnataka is heading for elections in two months. His visit to inaugurate Shivamogga airport on February 27 is confirmed already. PM Modi will also come down to Bengaluru to inaugurate the Aero India Show, held between Feb 13 and 17.

The BJP insiders say that PM Modi is highlighting the development and contributions of the double engine government at the state and Center rather than criticizing the opposition parties.

The Opposition parties are targeting the BJP and former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy has stirred a controversy by stating that the BJP is conspiring to make a Brahmin candidate the CM in Karnataka. It is to be seen whether PM Modi will make any comments on opposition parties’ attacks.

  • Hand over Dawood Ibrahim to India, Advani told Musharraf in 2001

Hand over Dawood Ibrahim to India, Advani told Musharraf in 2001

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India’s quest to bring fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim to justice has remained unfulfilled so far but in 2001, the then Union Home Minister L K Advani had put the uncomfortable question of handing over the global terrorist to visiting Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

“Musharraf’s face suddenly turned red and unfriendly. Hardly able to conceal his discomfort, he said something that I regarded as quite offensive,” Advani had recalled in a blogpost in 2011.

Advani had called on Musharraf, who was in India for the Agra Summit with the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was staying at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The former home minister had also pointed out that Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s hideout in the garrison town of Abbottabad was constructed when Musharraf was “in total command of the situation” in Pakistan.

Caught off-guard, Musharraf had emphatically denied that Dawood was in his country, a claim that a Pakistani official later said was a “white lie”.

“Musharraf, his unease palpable, replied assertively: ‘Mr. Advani, let me tell you emphatically that Dawood Ibrahim is not in Pakistan’,” the BJP veteran had written in his blog.

But “later, one of the Pakistani officials who was present during the meeting said to me, ‘What our president said about Dawood Ibrahim on that day was a white lie’,” wrote Advani.

The BJP leader likened the “white lie” about Dawood to what Pakistanis had been feeding to Americans all these years about Osama bin Laden.

Narrating the sequence of events, Advani said Musharraf had responded positively to his suggestion of having an extradition treaty between India and Pakistan.

Advani then asked him to make a “great contribution to the peace process if you handed over to India Dawood Ibrahim, who is the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case and who lives in Karachi”.

The US had designated Dawood Ibrahim as a “specially designated global terrorist” last year.

The question about handing over Dawood Ibrahim was put to Mohsin Butt, the chief of Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency, who was in India for a meeting of the Interpol in October last year.

Butt had stayed mum and walked away even as media persons fired a volley of questions at the top Pakistani officer.

Based in Karachi and wanted for multiple terror activities in India, including the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Ibrahim already has a bounty of USD 25 million on his head announced by the United Nations Security Council in 2003.

He is among India’s most wanted men, along with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Maulana Masood Azhar, Hizbul Mujahideen founder Syed Salahuddin and his close aide Abdul Rauf Asghar.

Musharraf died in Dubai on Sunday at the age of 79 after battling an incurable disease. He lived in self-imposed exile in the UAE to avoid criminal charges against him in Pakistan.

India, France, UAE unveil plan for cooperation under trilateral framework

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India, France and the UAE on Saturday unveiled an ambitious roadmap for cooperation in areas of defence, nuclear energy and technology under a trilateral framework.

After a phone conversation among their foreign ministers, a joint statement said the three sides agreed that the trilateral initiative will serve as a forum to promote the design and execution of cooperation projects in the fields of energy, with a focus on solar and nuclear energy.

“It was acknowledged that defence is an area of close cooperation between the three countries. Therefore, efforts will be undertaken to further promote compatibility, and joint development and co-production, whilst seeking out avenues for further collaboration and training between the three countries’ defence forces,” it said.

The foreign ministers noted that the trilateral initiative will serve as a platform to expand cooperation between their countries’ development agencies on sustainable projects.

The three foreign ministers met on September 19 last year for the first time in a trilateral format on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In the meeting, they agreed to establish a formal trilateral cooperation initiative to expand cooperation in various fields of mutual interest.

“It is in this context that a phone call between the three ministers was held today to adopt a roadmap for the implementation of this initiative,” the statement said.

  • Musharraf gifted birth certificate during 2005 India visit

Musharraf gifted birth certificate during 2005 India visit

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Pakistan’s former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf, the architect of the 1999 Kargil War, was born at a civic hospital in Delhi in undivided India.

He received his birth certificate over six decades later during his visit here in 2005.

Musharraf died in Dubai on Sunday at the age of 79 after battling an incurable disease. He lived in self-imposed exile in the UAE to avoid criminal charges against him in Pakistan.

Born on August 11, 1943, a turbulent time of the Second World War and India’s freedom movement had gained momentum, Musharraf migrated to the newly formed Pakistan with his family after the Partition in 1947.

According to old records, he was born at a civic-run hospital here, now known as the Mrs Girdhari Lal Maternity Hospital which comes under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Located near the Kamla Market in the heart of Delhi, it is one of the oldest hospitals in the city and has served largely people residing in old Delhi.

“His (Musharraf’s) family lived in old Delhi, and two hospitals are near it — Victoria Zenana Hospital (renamed Kasturba Hospital after Independence) in Daryaganj and Girdhari Lal Maternity Hospital.

“We knew that he was born in Delhi, and today learned from news reports that he died in Dubai,” a former senior civic official told PTI.

When Musharraf visited India as Pakistan’s president in April 2005, the government of India had given him a special gift — his birth certificate.

The senior civic official, who retired in 2011, said, in the 1940s and even in 2005, things were birth and death records were kept manually. “It must not have been an easy job to look for the birth certificate of the 1940s after over 60 years,” he said.

According to an archival image dated April 17, 2005, Musharraf had received his birth certificate from the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi during his three-day visit to India.

Fulfilling his long-cherished desire, Musharraf also went to Ajmer Sharif during his 2005 India visit and paid obeisance at the Dargah of the famous Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.

The neighbourhood in old Delhi where Musharraf grew up before moving to Karachi, had been visited by him and his mother in the past.

  • Pervez Musharraf: Kargil War’s architect, brought Pak & India to brink of war

Pervez Musharraf: Kargil War’s architect, brought Pak & India to brink of war

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan’s former military dictator General Pervez Musharraf, the architect of the Kargil War, toppled the democratically-elected government in a bloodless military coup in 1999 and ruled the country for nine years during which he survived numerous assassination bids.

Born in a middle-class family of Urdu-speaking Mohajir parents in Delhi in 1943, Musharraf migrated to Pakistan with his family after the Partition in 1947.

Pakistan’s last military dictator died on Sunday as a forgotten man in politics after spending his final years in self-exile in the UAE to avoid criminal charges against him in his country.

He died in the Gulf country after a prolonged illness.

During his stint as the head of the Pakistan government, Musharraf allied with America in the war against terror after the 9/11 attacks on the US and cracked down on Islamist groups and banned dozens of radical outfits, a move that angered radicals. He even escaped assassination attempts in later years.

Musharraf, who was appointed the chief of army staff by the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif in 1998, engineered the Kargil War that took place months after Sharif signed a historic peace accord with his Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Lahore.

After his failed misadventure in Kargil, Musharraf deposed Sharif in a bloodless coup and ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008 in various positions first as the chief executive of Pakistan and later as the President.

“‘Pervez Musharraf, Former Pakistani President, Dies of Rare Disease’: once an implacable foe of India, he became a real force for peace 2002-2007,” former minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor said in a tweet.

“I met him annually in those days at the @UN & found him smart, engaging & clear in his strategic thinking. RIP,” Tharoor said.

Musharraf, who announced elections in 2008 under domestic and international pressure, was forced to resign as president following the polls and went into self-imposed exile in Dubai.

In 2010, he formed his own party, the All Pakistan Muslim League and declared himself the party president. He voiced his opinion of actively taking part in Pakistan’s politics sometime in the future.

He returned to Pakistan in March 2013 to contest polls after living in self-exile for about five years but was hauled to court in different cases – including the 2007 assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto, treason under article 6 of Pakistan Constitution and murder of Bugti tribe chief Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti.

In 2006, on the orders of Gen Musharraf, the Pakistan Army killed the former junior interior minister and Governor of Balochistan Bugti and over two dozen of his tribesmen, leading to widespread unrest in the area and a surge in the Baloch nationalist sentiment in the province.

In 2019, Musharraf was sentenced to death in absentia by a special court which found him guilty of high treason, for imposing a state of emergency on November 3, 2007, by keeping the country’s constitution in abeyance.

The judgement angered the country’s powerful Army which has ruled over Pakistan for most of the period since its existence. It was the first time a former top military official had faced such a sentence for treason in Pakistan. The death sentence was later annulled by the Lahore High Court.

Musharraf, who was living in Dubai since March 2016, was also declared a fugitive in the Benazir Bhutto murder case and Red Mosque cleric killing case.

During his tenure, Pakistan saw some structural reforms – ranging from the economic and social sectors to administrative and political restructuring.

Musharraf visited India for the failed Agra summit in 2001 and made two more visits in 2005 as President to watch an India-Pakistan One-day Cricket match and in 2009 to attend a media event after shedding power.

Musharraf, the second of three brothers, spent his early years in Turkey, from 1949 to 1956, as his father Syed Musharrafu-ud-din was posted in Ankara.

On his return from Turkey, Musharraf studied at Saint Patrick’s High School, Karachi, and then at FC College, Lahore. He joined the Pakistan Military Academy in 1961 and was commissioned into the Artillery Regiment in 1964.

He fought in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 as a young officer, and also participated in the Indo-Pak War of 1971 as a Company Commander in the Commando Battalion.

Musharraf rose to the rank of General and was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff on October 7, 1998, by then prime minister Sharif.

He was given additional charge of the Chairman Joint Chiefs Staff Committee on April 9, 1999. Six months later, he toppled the Sharif government and became the head of the state designated as Chief Executive.

Musharraf got married in 1968 and has two children-a son and a daughter.
