Massive earthquakes can hit these parts of India any time, warns NGRI- Details Here

The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) on Tuesday predicted massive earthquakes in the Himalayan region with the potential to affect Uttarakhand and Nepal in the near future. It, however, added that strong building structures can prevent loss of property as well as life.

While speaking to media, NGRI’s chief scientist Dr N Purnachandra Rao said that Earth’s surface comprises various plates that are constantly in motion and the Indian plate is moving about 5 cm per year, leading to accumulation of stress along the Himalayas.

The accumulated stress increases the possibility of a greater earthquake, he said.

We have a strong network of 18 seismograph stations in Uttarakhand. The region referred to as the seismic gap between Himachal and western part of Nepal including Uttarakhand is prone to earthquakes that might occur at any time,” added Dr N Purnachandra Rao.

The NGRI scientist stressed that the earthquakes can hit with magnitude as strong as 8 on the Richter Scale.

Talking about the deadly earthquakes in Turkey recently, he said that the damage was more in the country because of the poor quality of buildings.

We can’t stop earthquakes but we can prevent loss. There are guidelines issued by the Government of India for construction of buildings in these earthquake prone areas, so public should follow those guidelines,” he advised. (Times Now)

  • Pakistani girl who was arrested for illegally staying in India returns home, says family

Pakistani girl who was arrested for illegally staying in India returns home, says family

    [ad_1]

Karachi: A minor Pakistani girl who went missing from her home in Hyderabad city in the southern Sindh province last September and was arrested from Bengaluru in January has returned back, her family said on Tuesday.

The girl, identified as Iqra Jeevani, entered India in September through the porous India-Nepal border. She married a 25-year-old security guard from Uttar Pradesh, whom she met through a gaming app.

The girl’s father, Sohail Jeewani, said they had already gone through a lot of pain and embarrassment and just wanted to move on.

“I don’t want her or anyone else in my family to speak on this issue. What has happened has happened. Yes I confirm she has been returned to us and we are leaving from Lahore tonight,” Sohail told PTI over phone before hanging up.

The girl’s case has garnered a lot of attention in both countries after she was recovered by the Indian authorities in January in Bengaluru.

Iqra, who is 16 years of age, left her home in Shahi Bazar in Hyderabad for her college – Federal Government Girls College – on September 19, 2022 and was found four months later in Bengaluru when police arrested a young boy she was living with.

It transpired she had developed a friendship and then relationship with the Indian man, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and apparently married him.

“She had called us from India in early January to inform us she was safe and married to this Indian man,” her uncle Afzal Jeewani said.

A senior police official said the family informed them about the call and they got in touch through required channels with the Pakistan foreign office who then contacted their Indian counterparts to help find and recover the girl.

A few days after her contact, she was arrested along with her purported husband.

Afzal claimed that the Indian man had deceived his niece by posing as a Muslim boy when the two met on social media while playing online Ludo games.

According to reports, Bengaluru police arrested Yadav, accusing him of bringing a Pakistani girl to India after befriending her.

Iqra was subsequently handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office officials, who later remanded her to a state home for women.

She was handed over to the Pakistani authorities on Sunday at the Wagah border.

  • Russia developing North-South Corridor for business with India, Iran, and Pakistan: Putin

Russia developing North-South Corridor for business with India, Iran, and Pakistan: Putin

    [ad_1]

Moscow: President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday said Russia is developing the ambitious North-South Transport Corridor, which will open up new routes for business cooperation with India, Iran and Pakistan, as well as West Asian countries.

In his one hour and 45 minutes State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly, Putin also said that Russia will expand promising international economic connections, as well as build new supply corridors, as the US-led West has imposed crippling sanctions for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine nearly one year ago.

“We will develop the ports of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, we will particularly focus on the North-South International Corridor,” Putin said, noting that it will open up new routes for business cooperation with India, Iran, Pakistan as well as West Asian countries.

“We will continue developing this corridor,” Putin was quoted as saying by the state-run Tass news agency.

“What areas should the state, regions, and local businesses focus their partnership work on? First, we will expand promising international economic connections and build new supply corridors,” he said in the speech days before the Ukraine war’s first anniversary on Friday.

He said a decision has already been taken to extend the Moscow-Kazan highway to Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk and Tyumen, and in the future — to Irkutsk and Vladivostok, and potentially — to Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China, which will particularly expand Russia’s economic ties with the markets of Southeast Asia.

The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is a 7,200-km-long multi-mode transport project for moving freight among India, Iran, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia and Europe.

The INSTC is India’s vision and initiative to reduce the time taken for EXIM shipments to reach Russia and Europe, and enter the Central Asian markets.

During a visit to Yerevan in Armenia in October 2021, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar proposed that the strategic Chabahar Port in Iran be included in the North-South Transport Corridor that has the potential to bridge connectivity barriers.

The Chabahar port in the Sistan-Balochistan province in the energy-rich nation’s southern coast is easily accessible from India’s western coast and is increasingly seen as a counter to Pakistan’s Gwadar Port located at a distance of around 80 km from Chabahar.

The first phase of the Chabahar port was inaugurated in December 2017 by then-Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, opening a new strategic route connecting Iran, India and Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan.

The Chabahar port is being considered a gateway to golden opportunities for trade by India, Iran and Afghanistan with Central Asian countries, besides ramping up trade among the three countries in the wake of Pakistan denying transit access to New Delhi.

  • Singapore residents can now transfer money to India through UPI

Singapore residents can now transfer money to India through UPI

    [ad_1]

Singapore residents can now transfer money to India through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) starting today. This move is expected to ease the money transfer process for Singaporean residents who have family and friends in India.

The UPI is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that allows users to transfer money instantly between bank accounts via a mobile device. With this new feature, Singaporeans will be able to transfer money to any UPI ID or bank account in India using their mobile phones.

According to the Times of India, the Singaporean High Commission in India and the NPCI have collaborated to enable this new service. Singaporean residents will need to download the UPI app and register for the service. They can then link their bank accounts to the UPI app and start transferring money to India.

This move is expected to have a positive impact on the remittance market in India. India is one of the world’s largest recipients of remittances, with an estimated $83 billion in remittances in 2020, according to the World Bank. Singapore is also a major source of remittances to India, with an estimated $6.5 billion in remittances in 2020.

By enabling Singaporean residents to transfer money to India through UPI, the process is expected to be faster, cheaper, and more convenient for both the sender and the recipient. This could potentially lead to an increase in remittances to India from Singapore.

This move also highlights the increasing collaboration between India and Singapore in the fintech space. The two countries have been working together to promote digital payments and fintech innovation. In 2018, the NPCI signed a memorandum of understanding with the Monetary Authority of Singapore to collaborate on digital payments and fintech innovation.

In conclusion, the new feature allowing Singapore residents to transfer money to India through UPI is a welcome move that is expected to have a positive impact on the remittance market in India. With faster, cheaper, and more convenient money transfers, this could potentially lead to an increase in remittances from Singapore to India. This move also highlights the increasing collaboration between India and Singapore in the fintech space.

  • If BJP keeps bullying media, investors won’t come to India: Akhilesh

If BJP keeps bullying media, investors won’t come to India: Akhilesh

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said foreign investors will not come to India as the BJP government’s ‘bulldozer policy’ and the recent I-T “raids” at the BBC offices have dented the country’s image abroad.

Talking to reporters after attending an assembly session here, Yadav, referring to the recently concluded Investors Summit in Uttar Pradesh, said the ruling BJP was selling dreams to people.

The pictures of the authorities bulldozing the houses of poor people have been seen by the world. If the BJP raids an institution like the BBC and intimidates the media, do you expect people from around the world to invest in the country, Yadav said.

The BJP is just selling dreams to the people that investments worth Rs 40 lakh crore will come to Uttar Pradesh, he said while referring to the Investors Summit.

“Investors came and went after taking a round of the Investors Summit. The government will not tell you that no one stayed at the tent city built by spending thousands of crores of rupees for the investors to stay. You (media) find out how many investors stayed in them. All were empty,” Yadav claimed.

Bulldozers used for demolishing illegal buildings have been in hot discussion in the state, inviting the sobriquet of “bulldozer Baba” for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

A 45-year-old woman and her 20-year-old daughter died after they immolated themselves during an anti-encroachment drive in a village in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh.

Referring to the death of Apna Dal-Sonelal’s MLA Rahul Prakash Kol due to cancer, the former chief minister said, “Today, so many people are dying due to cancer, but you (BJP) will not build a cancer institute, you will not build a hospital.”

“You (BJP) are the people of the government who want to build your own temple,” he said without elaborating which temple he was talking about.

On the presentation of the budget for 2023-24 in the state assembly on Wednesday, the SP president said, “Six budgets of this government have come so far. What did anyone get? No one got anything… the income of the farmers did not get doubled.”

“Unemployment and inflation are at their peak. The increase in the price of diesel and petrol has resulted in an increase in prices of vegetables and food items,” he claimed.

Describing the manhandling of mediapersons by security personnel during a protest by SP members in the Vidhan Bhavan premises on Monday as “unfortunate”, Yadav said action should be taken against the guilty.
