Pathaan becomes all-time number one Hindi film in India

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan” has become the all-time number one Hindi film in India by raising Rs 1028 crore worldwide since its release in January, said Yash Raj Films (YRF).

According to the studio, the Siddharth Anand directorial raised Rs 1.07 crore nett in India (Hindi – Rs 1.05 crore, all dubbed versions – Rs 0.02 crore) on its sixth Friday.

“The nett collection in India stand at Rs 529.96 crore (Hindi – Rs 511.70 crore, dubbed – Rs 18.26 crore) The total worldwide gross is an incredible 1028 crore (India gross: Rs 641.50 crore, overseas: Rs 386.50 crore)” YRF said in a press note.

The movie, a mega comeback vehicle for Shah Rukh after his absence from leading man roles for more than four years, released on January 25 to great hype and record advance bookings.

“It feels incredible that ‘Pathaan’ is now the number one Hindi film in India today! The love and appreciation that has been showered on ‘Pathaan’ by audiences is historic and it shows in the box office result. As a director, I’m proud that I made a film that has entertained people globally,” Anand said in a statement.

The new milestone comes days after “Pathaan” became the highest grossing Hindi film worldwide in the history of Hindi cinema in its initial run. “Dangal” is the highest grossing Indian film with a reported earnings of around Rs 2,000 crore.

In its initial run or phase one of the release, the Aamir Khan-starrer earned over Rs 700 crore. In its second phase, when it was released in theatres in China, the film’s box office crossed the Rs 1,000 crore mark in worldwide gross.

Other Indian films that crossed Rs 1,000 crore mark at the global box office include “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion”, “RRR” and “K.G.F: Chapter 2”.

“Pathaan”, which also stars John Abraham and Deepika Padukone, is an important step in YRF’s spy franchise where characters from different films will cross paths at some point. The film follows the titular spy (Shah Rukh) who comes out of exile to stop terrorist group Outfit X from launching a debilitating attack on India.

It is the fourth film in producer Aditya Chopra’s spy universe, following Salman Khan’s “Ek Tha Tiger” and “Tiger Zinda Hai”, and “War”, featuring Hrithik Roshan.

  • India is ‘dangerously close’ to Hindu rate of growth: Raghuram Rajan

India is ‘dangerously close’ to Hindu rate of growth: Raghuram Rajan

    [ad_1]

New Delhi; Sounding a note of caution, former Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan has said that India is “dangerously close” to the Hindu rate of growth in view of subdued private sector investment, high interest rates and slowing global growth.

Rajan said that sequential slowdown in the quarterly growth, as revealed by the latest estimate of national income released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) last month, was worrying.

Hindu rate of growth is a term describing low Indian economic growth rates from the 1950s to the 1980s, which averaged around 4 per cent. The term was coined by Raj Krishna, an Indian economist, in 1978 to describe the slow growth.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the third quarter (October-December) of the current fiscal slowed to 4.4 per cent from 6.3 per cent in the second quarter (July-September) and 13.2 per cent in the first quarter (April-June).

The growth in the third quarter of the previous financial year was 5.2 per cent.

“Of course, the optimists will point to the upward revisions in past GDP numbers, but I am worried about the sequential slowdown. With the private sector unwilling to invest, the RBI still hiking rates, and global growth likely to slow later in the year, I am not sure where we find additional growth momentum,” Rajan said in an email interview to PTI.

Recently, Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran had attributed the subdued quarterly growth to the upward revision of estimates of national income for the past years.

The key question is what Indian growth will be in fiscal 2023-24, Rajan said, adding “I am worried that earlier we would be lucky if we hit 5 per cent growth. The latest October-December Indian GDP numbers (4.4 per cent on year ago and 1 per cent relative to the previous quarter) suggest slowing growth from the heady numbers in the first half of the year.

“My fears were not misplaced. The RBI projects an even lower 4.2 per cent for the last quarter of this fiscal. At this point, the average annual growth of the October-December quarter relative to the similar pre-pandemic quarter 3 years ago is 3.7 per cent.

“This is dangerously close to our old Hindu rate of growth! We must do better.”

The government, he said, was doing its bit on infrastructure investment but its manufacturing thrust is yet to pay dividends.

The bright spot is services, he said, adding “it seems less central to government efforts.”

On a query regarding the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, Rajan said any scheme in which the government pours money will create jobs and any scheme which elevates tariffs on output while offering bonuses for final units produced in India will create production in India, and exports.

“A sensible evaluation would ask how many jobs are being created and at what price per job. By the government’s own statistics, 15 per cent of the proposed investment has come in but only 3 per cent of the predicted jobs have been created. This does not sound like success, at least not yet,” Rajan said.

Furthermore, even if the scheme fully meets the government’s expectations over the next few years, it will create only 0.6 crore jobs, a small dent in the jobs India needs over the same period, the former RBI Governor said.

“Similarly, government spokespersons point to the rise in cell phone exports as evidence that the scheme is working. But if we are subsidising every cell phone that is exported, this is an obvious outcome. The key question is how much value added is done in India. It turns (out to be) very little so far,” he said.

Rajan said cell phone parts imports have also gone up, so net exports in the cell phone sector, the relevant measure that no one in government talks about, is pretty much where it was when the scheme started.

“Except, we have also spent money on subsidies. Foxconn just announced a big factory to produce parts but they have been saying they will invest for a long time. I think we need a lot more evidence before celebrating the success of the PLI scheme,” he said.

Currently, Rajan is the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

He further said the most developed economies of the world are largely service economies, so you can be a large economy without a large presence in manufacturing.

“Services do not just account for the majority of our unicorns, services can also provide a lot of semi-skilled jobs in construction, transport, tourism, retail, and hospitality.

“So let us not deride service jobs indeed while the fraction of manufacturing jobs has stagnated in India, services have absorbed the exodus from agriculture.

“We need to work on both manufacturing and services to create the jobs we need, and fortunately, many of the inputs both (services and manufacturing) need schooling, skilling…,” he said.

On what measures the government should take to improve oversight of private family companies to address worries after the Hindenburg allegations on Adani Group, Rajan said: “I don’t think the issue is of more oversight over private companies”.

The issue is of reducing non-transparent links between government and business, and of letting, indeed encouraging, regulators do their job, he said.

“Why has SEBI not yet got to the bottom of the ownership of those Mauritius funds which have been holding and trading Adani stock? Does it need help from the investigative agencies?,” Rajan wondered.

Adani group has been under severe pressure since the US short-seller Hindenburg Research on January 24, accused it of accounting fraud and stock manipulation, allegations that the conglomerate has denied as “malicious”, “baseless” and a “calculated attack on India”.

  • JK First In India To Start PSGA Auto-Appeal  For Online Services

JK First In India To Start PSGA Auto-Appeal  For Online Services

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR:  Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta launched the Public Services Guarantee Act (PSGA) auto-appeal feature of few online services offered by Government Departments on Saturday.   The feature is going to auto escalate the appeals in case the services are not provided to the applicant with the time limit set under the Public Services Guarantee Act (PSGA).

Calling the step revolutionary, Dr Mehta applauded the IT department for integrating this feature in the digital services offered by different departments to the citizens.

With this move the UT of Jammu and Kashmir became the first in the country to integrate the auto-appeal feature to Service Plus platform.

Dr Mehta urged the department to work for activating this feature for all the 445 services offered by the government to its citizens at an earliest and told them to prioritize those services that form the bulk of the applications.

He advised for making the auto-appeal feature active for services related to the everyday life of the citizens like seeking of power/water connections, availing of documents like income, domicile, category, birth, death certificates and benefits like old age, widow pensions besides scholarships under various social security schemes etc.

He observed that this feature would act as a turning point in maintaining the transparency and accountability in services to the public. He maintained that this attribute in online services is going to be the landmark in eradicating corruption and malpractices.

Auto appeal is going to bring a greater transparency in these services in future as  it would ensure their delivery as per the timeframe set for them under PSGA and fixing of responsibility on part of any officer/official for any undue delay.

It was evident from the reports generated on service portal e-UNNAT (Jan sugam) that more than 90% of services are being delivered to public within stipulated time.

Moreover, the rejection rate of applications is very low at around 5% only with provision of giving feedback by the applicants through Rapid Assessment System (RAS) about their satisfaction level while availing such services.

The data also corroborates this change in the nature of offering and delivering government services to the citizens of the UT. The data shows that some 7,89,008 certificates have been delivered to public in the time frame set under Public Services Guarantee Act (PSGA).

‘Persistent cough, fever’: Influenza A on rise in India

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A persistent cough, sometimes accompanied by fever, running through India for the past two-three months is due to Influenza A subtype H3N2, ICMR experts said.

The H3N2, which has been in wide circulation for the past two-three months, causes more hospitalisations than other subtypes, said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) scientists who keep a close watch on ailments caused by respiratory viruses through the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories network.

They have also suggested a list of Dos and Don’ts for people to follow to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), on the other hand, has advised against indiscriminate use of antibiotics amid rising cases of cough, cold and nausea across the country.

Seasonal fever will last five to seven days, it said.

The fever goes away at the end of three days but the cough can persist for up to three weeks, the IMA’s Standing Committee for Anti-Microbial Resistance said.

Viral cases have also surged due to air pollution, it said, adding that it mostly occurs in people aged below 15 and above 50 and causes upper respiratory infections along with fever.

The association also asked doctors to prescribe only symptomatic treatment and not antibiotics.

“Right now, people start taking antibiotics like Azithromycin and Amoxiclav etc, that too without caring for done and frequency and stop it once start feeling better. This needs to be stopped as it leads to antibiotic resistance. Whenever there will be a real use of antibiotics, they will not work due to the resistance,” the IMA said in a statement.

The most misused antibiotics are Amoxicillin, Norfloxacin, Oprofloxacin, Ofloxacin and Levofloxacin. These are being used for the treatment of diarrhoea and UTI, it said.

“We have already seen widespread use of Azithromycin and Ivermectin during Covid and this too has led to resistance. It is necessary to diagnose whether the infection is bacterial or not before prescribing antibiotics,” it said.

Kulgam, Mar 04: A 9-year-old from Kulgam who is aspiring to play for India was praised by Irfan Pathan for amazing batting skills.

Mumin Liyakat son of Liyakat Ahmad Dar resident of Matibugh Yaripora is now a well known face with amazing batting skills.

His batting skills caught the attention of former Indian Cricketer Irfan Pathan who has been guiding him and sharing tips with him in a video.

“Will Surely Keep an eye on him” Said Irfan Pathan after he got impressed with Mumin during the event held at CAP- Cricket Academy of Pathans Jaipur.

To achieve his dream, he has been playing cricket every day before 9 am and after 4 pm.

“My favourite player is Virat Kohli and I am following his style,” Momin told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), adding, “my family has been very supportive of me and are always encouraging me to play cricket”.

His father Liyakat Ahmad Dar said that he left cricket in 2012 after he got injured on the field. But he also has been constantly guiding his son in the game.

“My son plays with a leather ball from day one and he has been practicing on cemented turf instead of an ordinary turf,” he said, adding that the ball on cemented turf comes with more speed and it gives batsman less time to react.

He said that Pathan asked to share his Mumin’s video to CAP Jaipur where he went through a three months training course.

  • Rahul Gandhi denigrated India on foreign soil, says Himanta Sarma

Rahul Gandhi denigrated India on foreign soil, says Himanta Sarma

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks during a lecture at the Cambridge Judge Business School in United Kingdom and said his speech was “a brazen attempt to denigrate our country on foreign soil” in the guise of targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He also attacked Rahul Gandhi over his remarks that the Congress leader saw terrorists from a distance during Bharat Jodo Yatra and a man who came near him pointed them to him.

Sarma, who made a series of tweets, asked why did Rahul Gandhi not report the incident to security agencies.

“Rahul says in Kashmir militants saw him, but he knew they wouldn’t target him. Why was this not reported to security agencies? Was there some understanding Congress had with these militants to protect Rahul?” he asked.

The BJP leader said Rahul Gandhi described the Pulwama terror attack as a “car bomb that killed 40 soldiers”.

“How dare he insult our jawans? It wasn’t a bomb sir, but a terror attack. No surprises that he refused to name Pakistan behind Pulwama attack. Is this part of the understanding Cong had with militants?” Sarma asked.

“First foreign agents target us! Then our own targets us on a foreign land! Rahul Gandhi’s speech at Cambridge was nothing but a brazen attempt to denigrate our country on foreign soil in the guise of targeting PM Narendra Modi ji,” he added.

Rahul Gandhi in his lecture ‘Learning to Listen in the 21st century’ at Cambridge University said that during Bharat Jodo Yatra in Kashmir, he was pointed towards terrorists by a man who came near him to talk.

He menitoned the incident while emphasising the power of listening and non-violence.

“People are coming and one guy looks at me and he says, ‘Call me. So, I am like, ‘Come’ … And the security people said, ‘Please do not do this … please do not call people, because it is putting everyone at risk.’ So, he comes and he starts walking next to me. And, he says, ‘Mr Gandhi, you have come here to listen to us.’ I am like, ‘yes’. He said, ‘That is interesting.’ He is like, ‘You really come here to listen to us.’ I am like, ‘yes’ and he is like good. And then he says, ‘You see those guys over there?’ And we are walking. I ask, ‘Who?’ He says, ‘Those boys over there.’ He is like, ‘They are militants.’ Now militants should normally kill me,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“In that environment, militants should kill me. He says they are there and they are looking at you. So, I look at them and they are giving me this sort of look and I am like, okay, I am now in trouble because this guy has just told me this … They give me this look and I give them this look back and then we carry on. Nothing happens. Why I am telling you this is because they actually could not do anything. They actually did not have the power to do anything even if they wanted to. Because I had come into that environment listening. And I had come into that environment completely with no violence in me at all. And a vast number of people there were saying that. That to me was an indicator of power of listening and non-violence,” he added.

In his lecture, Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack at the Centre alleging that an attack has been unleashed on the basic structure of Indian democracy while also claiming that Israeli spyware Pegasus was being used to snoop into his phone.

The Congress leader claimed that he had been warned by the intelligence officers to be “careful” while speaking on the phone as his calls were being recorded.

  • Cuttack varsity prohibits screening of ‘Gay India Matrimony’, ‘Had Anhad’

Cuttack varsity prohibits screening of ‘Gay India Matrimony’, ‘Had Anhad’

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: A day after cancelling a scheduled film festival at Ravenshaw University in Cuttack without citing any reason, authorities of the institute on Friday allowed students to organise the same with a rider.

The organisers were told to remove two films ‘Had Anhad’ and ‘Gay India Matrimony’ from the line up that was prepared for the festival, according to a varsity official.

Vice-chancellor Sanjay K Nayak was not available for his comment on the whole issue, but the university’s public relations officer, Dharmabrata Mohanty, said, “Some students were against the screening of the two films. We did not want any trouble, and they were taken off the list.”

A member of the varsity’s film society said that the festival, scheduled to start at 10.30 am on Friday, was scrapped by the authorities just a day before, reportedly due to an anonymous threat call.

The decision led to a massive protest outside the vice chancellor’s office, prompting the authorities to reconsider the decision, but with certain conditions, he said.

The three-day event, the first of its kind in the university, is largely focused on filmmaker Satyajit Ray, with an exhibition put up in his memory, apart from other sessions involving other directors.

Ray’s masterpieces Pather Panchali’ and Charulata’ are among the 15 films that were chosen for screening at the film festival.

Talking to PTI, Ravenshaw Film Society secretary Subha Sudarshan Nayak said that Pather Panchali’ was among the films that had figured in the controversy on Thursday, as some students had objected to its screening.

“A section of students did not want ‘Pather Panchali’ to be screened initially, claiming that the film romanticised poverty. The film was, however, shown today,” Nayak told PTI.

The varsity later picked two other films from the list and cancelled their screenings, he said.

Debalina Majumder, the director of ‘Gay India Matrimony’, termed the university’s decision “annoying and outrageous”.

“I do not see any reason behind the last-minute decision to pull out our film from the list. ‘Gay India Matrimony’ has received required permission from the Central Board of Film Certification. We are mulling the option of approaching the governor of Odisha, who is also the vice-chancellor of Ravenshaw University,” Majumdar told PTI over phone.

A group of students, reportedly affiliated to a rightwing outfit, however, came out in support of the university authorities.

“We are opposed to screening of the film ‘Had Anhad’ and ‘Gay India Matrimony’ as they are against Indian culture,” one of the students said.

Sources at the Ravenshaw University stated that the authorities stopped the screening of the two films fearing a possible unrest on the campus.
